WelcometotheDecembernewsletter.AsIwritethis,Ican’thelpbutwonder–wheredid2014go?Itseemstohavegonebyveryquickly–orisitthatI’mjustgettingold(er).
NotmuchtoreportfromaRoveringperspectivethismonth,otherthanIhavebeenspendingasmuchtimeasIcanontheSeries3(31HF77).SofarIhavereplacedmostofthebrake-lines,andallofthewheelcylindersplusthemaster:Followedbynewbrakeshoes&shockabsorbersallroundandabunchofelectricalparts–alternator,coilandignitionleads.Anewcarbanddistributorareintheplan,andthelatestpackagefrom3Brothersincludedhuboilsealswhichshouldbefittedthisweek.Ialsoremovedtherattydash-top,whichdidn’trevealanyrealhorrorsbutthebulkheadwillneedtreatingwithsomesortofwaxoilbeforethenewdash-topgoeson.
OurSpecialCorrespondentAffairesMilitaire–Robin,wasofgreathelpintracingmoreoftheearlyservicehistoryofthetruck–andIwasabletosecureacopyoftheVehicleHistoryCardfromtheRoyalLogisticsCorpsarchive.It’shadarelativelyquietlife,whichisconfirmedbytheoverallmechanicalcondition–whichisverygood:
• Dateintoservice–Jan1980.MoDtook“delivery”whenthebuildnumber/VRMwasappliedonthefactoryfloor.
• ItwenttothevehicledepotatHiltonandthentoTA250fieldAmbulanceunitinHull,UK.
• ItwasreturnedtoHiltonafteronly6monthsand
thensenttoBATUS.
• After3yearswithBATUSitwasassignedtoBATSUWwhichisBritishArmyTrainingSupportUnitWainwright-amostlyinfantryand105lightgununittrainingestablishment.NotanksorAPCS.
• In1985,itwassignedovertoExerciseTrumpetDancewhichwasanannualUK/USwinterexerciseheldinWashingtonState.
RobinfoundaphotofromaTrumpetDanceexercise–showsthetrucksoperatedinastrippeddowncondition–nodoorsorroof–butwiththeheavydutyroll-overbar:Allgreatinformationandreallyhelpfulastherebuild/re-commissioningprogresses.
Saturday27thDecemberwasthedatefortheOVLRChristmasParty–hostedthisyearbyAndrewFandDeliaC.Thankyoubothforcreatingareallygreatevent–lotsofgoodfoodandexcellentcompany.
IcontributedaFeelieMeelie,whichwasfuntoputtogether–perhapsIgotabitoverenthusiastic-thefinaltallyonthepartswas25–whichincludedonemysteryobject(non-Roverrelated).Allthepartswereharvestedfrommyinventory…soemphasiswasonSeriestrucks–noplushienonsensethisyear–andnothinghadfallenofftheLR3.Thisgeneratedsomemutteringfromsomequarters,butintheend,sevenbravesoulshadagoattryingtoidentifythebitsinthetub:Dixon,Robin,Kevin,Terry,AndrewF,Bruce,andTedRose.
Prettysoonitwasevidentwhotherealexpertswere,withTed,KevinandDixonbreakingawayfromtherestofthepack:Allofwhomwereabletocorrectlyidentifyover19components–actuallyit’sagood(sad)

Intheend,thewinnerwasDixonwithascoreof23,narrowlybeatingKeven(21),andTed(19)–clearlyspendingtoomuchtimearoundtheGermansthesedays…Brucefinished4thwithascoreof16,followedbyRobin(8),AndrewF(7)–claimedhewasdistractedbyhisdutiesaseventhost,andTerry(1)-noDiscopartsthisyear.
Naturallythereareprizestobeawarded-sadlythesecouldnotbepresentedattheeventasmostpeoplehadleftbythetimeDixongothishandsoutofthetubamidallegationsthathewasn’tjustidentifyingtheparts,butactuallycaressingthem…Prizesareasfollows:

Itstartedinnocentlyenough.BenSmithandI,sippingBunnahahbain,alovelysinglemalt,afteradayofworkingonorrespectiveeightyinchLand-Roversbegantodiscusswhichonesmightbewhere.TherewasreferencetoamucholderconversationbetweenTedRoseandI(yes,ofTRSSfame)wherewequicklycountedeighteenintheOttawaregionaboutfifteenyearsago.Thisledtoanidea,andthenextthingyouknow,Benhadaspreadsheetinaction.Timepasses,andKeithBarrettofBrockvillewasintroducedintothefray.Keith,itseems,hadbeentrackingseriesonesinaninformalmannerforanumberofyearsandhadaccumulatedaraftofeclecticinformation.Thespreadsheetgrew.

OnthemostunlikelywarmestdayofDecemberthisyearthehungryclubfaithfulgatheredatAndrew&Delia’splaceforthesecondhomebasedpotluckChristmasdinner.
Kevindrovemeandwearrived5secondsafterFrancoisandAnnieat5:30onthedot.NicetoseethatStonecrestisnowpavedfromThomasDolanallthewaytoAndrew’s.Asweweregreeted,morecarskeptarrivingregularlyuntilwewereallthere.
RobinCraigmadethehikefromHowe’sIslandsowe’llgivethelongestdistanceaward.SecondwasprobablyFrancoisandAnniefromGloucester.
Westartedoffwithhorsd’oeuvresanddrinksandchatting.TheRoseshavemovedfromNepeantoanewplacewhoselocationImissed.Robingavemearundownontillingandplantingdownonthefarm.

OVLRmemberWilliamP.“Bill”Caloccia,52,passedawayathomeonWednesday,October8,2014followingalengthybattlewithcancer.BillwasborninSpringfield,Massachusettsin1962andraisedinTroy,NewYork,wherehegraduatedfromTamaracHighSchool,andlaterobtainedhisdegreeinComputerEngineeringfromRensselaerPolytechnicInstitute(RPI).BillhadasuccessfulcareerinthecomputerindustryworkingworldwideforavarietyoffirmsincludingStratus,OpenMarket,UPromise,andeventuallyNetezza,bothbeforeandaftertheiracquisitionbyIBM.Billwasastaunchsupporteroflocalfarming,sustainableenergyprojects,publicradio,andsmallindependentbusiness.HeattendedtheSaratogaJazzFestannuallyandwasaloverofmusic,animals,photography,andnature.HecontributedvastknowledgeandresourcestotheSt.VincentHospitalCancerandWellnessProgramandwasanactivememberofvariousLand-RoverclubsandtheTollerRescueAssociation.
