parents   to   schedule   a   time   with   their   child’s   classroom  teacher   to   discuss   student   progress.   Schedules   will   be  posted   outside   the   classroom   for   parents   to   sign   up.   We  remind   parents   that   appointment   times   are   necessary   to  allow  for  you  to  meet  with  the  classroom  teacher.

Newton  Weekly  Schedule  SA  would   like   to   inform   all   parents   at  the   Newton   Campus   that   there   has  been  an  official  change  in  schedule  for  our   Academic   and   Gurdwara   period.  The   first   academic   period   begins   at  8:25   to   9:05AM,   and   the   Gurdwara   assembly   has   been  moved  to  9:05-‐9:40.  The  reason  for  the  change  was  to  make  both   the   academic   and   Gurdwara   periods   more   efficient  and   effective.   We   ask   that   all   parents   make   an   effort   to  have   students   in   class  before  8:25   so   they  are  not  missing  valuable  academic  time  and  instruction.    Classroom   teachers  will   be   sending   home   updated  weekly  timetables   for   your   reference.   If   there   are   any   questions,  please   feel   free   to   speak   to  your   classroom   teacher  or   the  school  administration.

Winter  Assembly  SA  would  like  to  invite  all  parents  and  families  members  to  the  SA  Winter  Assembly  held  on  December  18th  from  10:15-‐11:30AM   at   both   campuses.   Come   and   see   some   great  student  presentations  as  we  celebrate  the  Winter  season.

Winter  Break  (Dec  22-‐Jan  2)  SA  will  be  closed   for  Winter  Break   from  December   22nd   to   January   2nd.   School  will   reopen   to   all   students   on  Monday,  January  5th,  2015.  We  want  to  remind  all  students  that  all  homework  assignments  or  projects  are  expected  to  be  complete  upon  returning  to  school  in  the  New  Year.  SA  would  like  to  wish  all  families  a  wonderful  holiday  break.

Sikh  History  Classes  Mr.  K.  Singh  has  requested  that  students  in  both  campuses  from   Grades   2-‐7,   who   are   taking   Sikh   History,   purchase   a  hard   cover   notebook/journal   with   lined   paper   inside.   Any  questions  or  clarification  can  be  directed  to  Mr.  K.  Singh.

Religious  Assembly  On  December  5th,  SA  will  be  hosting  a  religious  assembly  to  commemorate   the   martyrdom   of   Shri   Guru   Gobind   Singh  Ji’s   sons   Shahidi   Char   Sahibzade.   The   PAC   will   also   be  providing  langar  service  all  students.      During  this  day,  SA  will  bring  all  Fleetwood  students  to  the  Newton  Campus   for   langar,   and   to  have   a  meet   and   greet  with  their  peers.  Primary  students  will  be  leaving  Fleetwood  at   9:45AM   and   returning   at   11:45AM.   Intermediate  students   will   be   leaving   Fleetwood   at   11:45AM   and  returning  at  1:45PM.  Any  parents   interested   in  helping  can  notify  the  school  office.

PAC  Family  Movie  Night  (Fleetwood)    The   Fleetwood   PAC   will   be   hosting   a  movie   night   (Home   Alone   2:   Lost   in   New  York)  on  December  17th,  2014  for  students  from   both   campuses.   The   event   will   be  held  at  our  Fleetwood  campus,  with  doors  opening   at   5:00PM,   and   the   movie  beginning  at  5:15PM.  Tickets  will  be  sold  in

School  Closures  –  Extreme  Weather  As  we  head  into  the  winter  months,  there  are  at   times  extreme  weather   conditions  which  make  it  difficult  to  have  the  school  open.  To  ensure  the  safety  of  all  parents,  students,   and   teachers   during   these  times,   the   school   may   be   required   to  close.  If  extreme  weather  is  forecasted,  please  visit  the  Sikh  Academy   website   and   listen   to   local   radio   (CKNW   and  RedFM)   for   up   to   date   information   on   the   possibility   of  school   closures.   SA   will   make   every   attempt   possible   to  remain  open  as  long  as  it  is  safe  for  everyone.

Destination  Imagination  Morning  Students   at   both   campuses   will   be   participating   in  Destination  Imagination  Morning  on  Wednesday,  December  17th.   Teachers   will   set   up   activities   throughout   their  classrooms   to   promote   student   creativity,   critical   thinking,  collaboration,  problem  solving  and  community  skill  building.  Students  will  rotate  between  activities  and   learn  with  their  peers.

School  Uniform  This   is   a   reminder   that   all   students   MUST   be  wearing  proper   school  uniform.  From  November  to  March,  all  students  are  required  to  wear  their  SA  sweaters,  as  per  the  school  policy.  Parents  are  also  reminded  that  navy  blue  hoodies  and  zip-‐ups

PAC  Subway  Lunch  The   PAC   Subway   lunch   will   run   once  again   in  December.   Subway   lunch  at   the  Fleetwood   Campus   is   on   Friday,

Student  Planners  We   remind   parents   that   they   should   be   checking   the  student   planners   daily,   and   signing   it   to   confirm   that   all  homework  has  been  completed.  Teachers,  at  times,  will  also  use   the   student   planners   to   send   home   messages   about  student  progress,  or  any  areas  of  concern.  Parents  can  also  use  the  planners  to  send  information  to  the  teacher.

FLU  Season  FLU   season   is   upon   us   once   again.   If   your  child   is   sick,   please   do   not   send   them   to  school,   as   it   raises   the   concern   of   the   virus  being   spread   to   other   students.   Students,  who   are   sick,   should   stay   home,   get   their  work  for  the  days  missed.

Classroom  Websites  Your  child’s  teacher  has  established  a  classroom  website  for  the   class.   We   ask   parents   become   familiar   with   the  classroom   website   to   keep   up   to   date   with   what   is  happening   in   the   classroom.   Websites   will   often   list  homework,   information   about   projects   or   any   special  events.   Teacher   websites   can   be   accessed   from   the   Sikh  Academy   website   at   www.sikhacademy.ca   under   the  Teacher  Pages  link.
