December 2014 Annapolis Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. THE DELTA TIMES GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy Anniversary, and welcome to the December 2014 issue of the Delta Times. On December 9, 2014, the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta So- rority, Inc., celebrated 67 years of sisterhood and service to the Annapolis and surrounding communities. As you are aware, our chapter is built on a long legacy of advocacy and service in which it has been in existence longer than all but one other alumnae chapter in the state of Maryland. During our December chapter meeting, we will pay homage to this legacy as we continue to learn and grow as a chap- ter. As we celebrate this milestone, let us all be mindful of the true essence of public service, giving back to the communities that we serve. Staying true to that com- mitment, last month the chapter provided Thanksgiving baskets to five families in Anne Arundel County through the Department of Social Services Holiday Sharing Program. Also last month, the chapter hosted the Fall Dance, An Evening of Elegance, anoth- er endeavor designed to provide scholarships to youth in the community, and this month, the chapter, part- nered with the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in providing blankets for the homeless as part of a local initiative that provides a warm blanket and a hot meal to the homeless on Christmas day. (See Delta Updates on page 9 for more information). The December chapter meeting and holiday luncheon will both take place at the Double Tree Hotel in Annapolis on December 20 th beginning at 10:00 a.m. If attending the holi- day luncheon and want to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift, including your name, valued at $15 dollars to the meeting. Special thanks to the Hospi- tality Committee for its hard work coordinating this event. Last weekend, members of the chapter and the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha also attended the play Five Guys Named Moat the Arena Stage, which provided great music, singing, and dancing. Finally, as we celebrate the holiday season, please keep in mind the family of our soror, chapter member, and friend, Deborah Ann Jones, who recently entered into Omega Omega. The Arts and Letters Committee continues to work on its project, the new initiative -

“INGENIOUS WORKS OF ART” – a Showcase of Original Works in the Performing

Arts. The deadline for student submissions has been extended to FRIDAY,

DECEMBER 19, 2014. Although the committee received several student entr ies,

it wants to ensure adequate time for all Anne Arundel County students to learn about

this opportunity. The audition schedule and site have also been changed to accommo-

date the variety of student groups that have applied to participate. The auditions will

be conducted on SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 2015, at the Roger “Pip” Moyer Community Recreation Center

from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The committee is continuing to promote and publicize its Showcase to the Anne Arundel County Public

Schools, community organizations, and youth groups. The Showcase packet with the guidelines, submission and

consent forms is available to view and download on the Chapter website homepage at www.annapolisalumnae.org.

Please share this information with any students that you know. Additionally, the committee encourages the Delta

Youth group students to participate.

On December 13, 2014, 11 Sorors and some spouses attended the performance of “Five Guys Named Moe”,

for the matinee at 2:00 p.m., at the new Arena Stage Theater, in a collaboration with the Mu Lambda Chapter of Al-

pha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Finally, the December pick – “Beyond the Lights” for our Matinee at the Movies was deemed “a good,

heartwarming, emotional love story” by the Sorors who attended on a dreary rain-soaked Saturday afternoon. Di-

rected by African-American Female Director, Gina Prince-Blythewood, it is highly recommended for its positive

imagery of an African-American Male and the lesson of “being your-

self”. The film showcases the exceptional talent of Nate Parker, Gugu

Mbatha-Raw, Danny Glover, and Minnie Driver. With the upcoming

Holidays, we want to mention “Annie”, with Jamie Foxx, Qqvenzhane

Wallis, and Cameron Diaz, in theaters on December 19, 2014. Addition-

ally, “Top Five” with Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, will be in theaters on

December 12, 2014. Stay tuned for the January pick! Have a Blessed and Relaxing Holiday Season!

The Importance of

E.M.B.O.D.I. As 2014 is quickly coming to an end, it is quite evident that it is more important than ever to empower our young black males to build opportunities for developing independence! It is the goal of the EMBODI commit-tee in collaboration with the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity to equip our young black males to be successful today and in the future.

To aid in this effort we begin with empower – “To give power or authority to; authorize, especially by legal or official means.” Our black males must understand and embrace the idea that they have the power and authority to live and succeed in this country, and we all have an obligation to ensure they have the opportunity to do so.

We end with independence – “Freedom from the control, influence, support, or aid of others.” FREEDOM – freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom from harassment, freedom from discrimination, freedom from disparate treatment – FREEDOM! Let’s vow today to do our part to guarantee OUR young black males

this freedom. Join us as we make 2015 a year of HOPE for our young black males!

Merry Christmas! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy New Year!

COMMITTEE NEWS: EMBODI

On November 19, 2014, Soror Betty B. Turner, a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapo-lis and Anne Arundel County Board of Directors, presented an overview of the Academy to the Board at its monthly 8am meeting. The presenta-tion was well received. In addition to the pro-gram being implemented at the Bates branch two directors of other branches expressed great inter-est.

Later, at 5pm the Academy girls began arriving and continued work on their Me boxes. Twelve girls attended. Soror Nnemdi Baird conducted an ice breaker type activity, discussed relationships and how to be a good friend opposed to a bad friend.

Soror JoAnn Scipio led an activity on body im-age, changes in adolescent girls bodies and how the girls see themselves.

There was 100% participation in both sessions. Each girl had take-a-ways. The participants sum-marized the experience through entries in their journals.

Recent and upcoming birthdays were recognized.

Committee members as well as several parents/grandparents were in attendance. The session was concluded with group photos.

COMMITTEE NEWS: HEALTH

World AIDS Day

On Monday December 1, 2014, the Anne Arundel County World AIDS Day committee held a World AIDS

Day Observance program at Fresh Start Church in Glen Burnie, MD. Health professionals and local advo-

cates talked openly about HIV/AIDS and society's perceptions about the disease over the years. Two individ-

uals living with HIV, spoken word artist Ms. Mary Bowman, and the Keynote speaker Rev. Lawrence Smith,

spoke candidly and shared their stories. The evening included several talents, which included mime dancers,

a presentation of a Youth Mural (painting by a local teen), and a youth rap presentation. The program ended

with the lighting of candles of remembrance to commemorate those who had lost their lives to the disease.

Most importantly, we were all reminded the importance of knowing your status by getting tested for HIV.

Let’s continue to raise awareness, support local and national programs/ organizations and fund research to

help fight HIV and help those living with this disease live a long and healthy life.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Greeting Sorors!

As we close out 2014, let’s take the time to count our blessings and not our problems. Take the time to reflect on the important things in life whatever you determine them to be. Take the time to heal emotionally and physically from unfulfilled promises and dream in 2014. Forgive past hurt and pain knowing you are releasing yourself from previous life experiences that are no longer relevant. Reassess your life and eliminate anything in your life that does not add to your happiness or assist you on your personal spiritual journey. Finally accept all that occurred in 2014 and leave it in 2014!

As we move forward into 2015 start to imagine all the possibilities that exist in the New Year, open your eyes to new and exciting adventures that lay ahead. Dear to dream and start moving forward on God’s promises that may have begun in 2014 but were not fulfilled. Declare and accept joy as yours to control within your life. Allow your voice, ideas and new dreams to ignite a flame that will grow throughout 2015! Decided to live on purpose moving forward with an expectation of greatness and setting a standard of excellence in all you do!

“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed” Psalm 20:4 (NIV) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Continue to move

forward with an expectation of greatness sorors!
