MoneywiseTHE NEW WORLD OF PERSON-TO-PERSON PAYMENTS The guys are out to dinner and they want to split the check. One says he'll pay by credit card, but no one else has cash. What's the solution? Simple: Send cash through your smartphone. With a quick email or a few taps on your cellphone, you can trans-fer the money, and your recipient will get it in a day or two. The Federal Reserve says about one in four smartphone owners made a mobile payment in the last 12 months. There are two good ways to make payment to another person. You can send cash through your bank. Most will let you transfer money using an in-house system. Or you can use a service partner such as Dwolla, Google Wallet, or PayPal. You have to sign up if you don't have an account and so does your recipient. To pay through your bank, sign up for the money transfer option online or via its mobile app. Then you can key in your recipient's cell number or email address and the amount to be sent. It will be debited from your bank account or credit card.

He or she receives an email alert, then signs up to receive pay-ments, basically providing a bank account where the funds can be wired, often within minutes if you're customers at the same bank, or within a couple of days if you're not.

CNNMONEY asks this question once a year. These were the 2013 replies: • Save it: 42 percent• Pay down debt: 41 percent• Treat myself: 10 percent• Improve my home: 7 percent• On an individual basis, a 21-year-old said he deserved a vacation and would take one.• A 61-year-old said she would deposit it in her retirement accounts.• A 33-year-old said he would use it to pay on his college loans.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH AN EXTRA $1,000?

BIG DATA GIVES BIG EMPLOYERS A PEEK INTO THE FUTURE OF EMPLOYEES

If you've ever had a key employee suddenly announce he has found a new job, you already know the value of retaining employees -- and being able to predict if and when they'll leave. For big employers, huge stores of data are being compiled into 'predictive analytics,' a fancy phrase for the new Human Resources' crystal ball.

Big employers are looking at patterns of behavior that might tell them, who will stay with the company, whether that person is promotable, and when the person is likely to quit.

One example from NBC news: A manager has a key employee who is pregnant with her second child. The manager begins to worry that the key employee will have to be replaced. How valid is that concern? Predictive analytics would analyze data from many sources and could come up with an answer for the manager: More than one factor goes into an employee leaving.

At ConAgra, predictive analytics found that high performing managers who were born between the late 60s and early 80s (Generation X) are least likely to leave the firm. On the other hand, Generation Y employees (born after the 1980s) are more likely to leave.

ConAgra also used data to see if it was true that the younger the worker, the more ability to adapt to changing work conditions. They found age was not a factor and the ability to learn can be present at any age.

Pay was not among the top 10 reasons people leave. Their relationships with their supervisors and whether they are recognized for their work were two of the stronger factors. Understanding those factors in a present employee can help companies make changes and retain people.

During the holiday season extra help is needed for abused and abandoned animals in local animal shelters.

One grassroots organization, Operation Santa Paws, is helping by spreading the word about a canine-feline toy or treat drive to benefit less-fortunate pets this season.

Animal lovers are encouraged to purchase a new dog toy, cat toy, food or food treats that will be delivered in time for Christmas to a local shelter and rescue organization.

Think about a sad puppy who knows nobody loves him, a beautiful cat that has lost her family for some reason, or a mature dog that had a loving family until they had to move and could no longer care for him. On Christmas, a toy or a food treat will make them joyful for the day, and you will feel joyful for making it possible.

Why Nasal Irrigation Nasal Irrigation is important because it allows a large volume of solution to travel through the nasal passages, creating a momentum that sweeps away excess mucus and allergens, which cannot be done by saline sprays that only reach the entrance to the nose. While this sounds more burdensome, the volume is definitely relevant. The difference between saline sprays and saline irrigations can be likened to using a garden hose to wash the driveway on the sprinkler setting, rather than on the full flow setting. How to Perform Nasal Irrigation Nasal irrigation can be performed with a squeeze bottle or a neti pot, a tea pot shaped device. Both methods require preparing a warm saline solution using a mixture packet and distilled, bottled, or previously boiled water. NeilMed mixture packets contain only natural ingredients, sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. If using a neti pot, fill the pot with solution, place the tip under the nostril, tip your head to allow solution to enter the nose. Gravity allows the solution to reach all the way through the nasal passages and come out the opposite nostril. You then do this on the opposite side, gently blowing the nose after each side. The squeeze bottle achieves the same result, but instead of tilting to the side, you can bend over the sink while standing upright. Then gently squeeze the bottle until the solution flows out of the bottle, into the nose, and out the opposite nostril. Do this on both sides. Nasal Irrigation for Children Hesitations to use medications on children is a legitimate concern. Antibiotics and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can be harmful for young children. When it comes to natural remedies, many products can be overpriced and ineffective. However, salt water, also known as saline, used as a nasal treatment is a cost-effective, natural treatment with a proven history. Some may say it is the best natural decongestant. Both neti pots and squeeze bottles can be used on children four years and older; while children one to four may use approved saline sprays with special nozzles or specially designed saline vials. Is it safe? Saline rinsing is a very safe procedure that contains no drugs, only natural ingredients. However, water safety is a critical issue because even tap water that is safe to drink may not be safe to put in the nose. The nose is an entrance to the body and the nasal passages are not immune to bacteria that the digestive system can handle. Only distilled, micro-filtered through a 0.2 micron filter (not a Brita filter), commercially bottled, or previously boiled water is safe. This is to prevent unwanted organisms from entering the body and spreading infection. It is also important to keep your device clean. Disinfect devices by washing the bottle or neti pot with soap and water, and place in microwave for 60-90 seconds to sterilize. Devices should also be replaced every three months. Always read the instructions and safety precautions of any saline product you buy at the store. Saline nasal irrigation is a safe, effective, and affordable method of relieving nasal symptoms due to allergies, colds, sinusitis, rhinitis, and many other causes.
