As 2013 draws to a close, it’s natural for our attention to be drawn towards the holidays. I find myself looking forward to all of the great events planned for December at our Lodge. However, I also believe this is a time when we should all look back at the past year and decide if we have made a difference in our community. I am happy to say Pottstown Lodge 814 has made a significant contribution. With great pride in our mem- bership, I’d like to remind everyone of the great work our Lodge has done. The Veterans Committee held a Veterans Picnic, Veteran’s nonalcoholic Pub Night and Bowling, and sponsored a monthly Bingo Night for the veterans from the South Eastern Vet Center. The Lodge sponsored and held a Fire Prevention and Safety Fair in July. The Lodge participated in the Books for Newborn infants in cooperation with the Pottstown High School Key Club. Our members’ participated in the Halloween Extravaganza in partnership with the Masons, the Sisters of the Eastern Star and the AM- BUCS. The Lodge’s Charitable Trust trustees ensured that donations reached various lo- cal groups and that our student scholarships were funded. The generosity of our members and the diligent work of the ENF Committee al- lowed us to meet our ENF goal and the Home Services Committee and volunteers worked to ensure our breakfast fund raisers were a success every month. In addition, our members manned a food stand at the annual Soap Box Derby in cooperation with the Ambucs. Pottstown Lodge 814’s ongoing accomplishments are a result of the work and dedication of our members who contribute time, money, and labor. All of you are the strength behind what drives our Lodge forward and I’m looking forward to a great 2014. In closing, my wife Patty and I would like to wish all our Members and their Families an abundance of happiness and joy throughout the holidays along with a happy and prosperous New Year. To All Members!!

No member is to intrude or attend a private party or event unless they are in-vited or purchased a ticket. If you do not comply you will be subject to suspen-sion of your lounge privileges as deemed appropriate by the Home Association Board. Thank you.

With great pride in our mem-bership, I’d like to remind everyone of the great work our Lodge has done.

The Veterans Committee held a Veterans Picnic, Veteran’s non‐alcoholic Pub Night and Bowling, and sponsored a monthly Bingo Night for the veterans from the South Eastern Vet Center. The Lodge sponsored and held a Fire Prevention and Safety Fair in July. The Lodge participated in the Books for Newborn infants in cooperation with the Pottstown High School Key Club. Our members’ participated in the Halloween Extravaganza in partnership with the Masons, the Sisters of the Eastern Star and the AM-BUCS. The Lodge’s Charitable Trust trustees ensured that donations reached various lo-cal groups and that our student scholarships were funded.

The generosity of our members and the diligent work of the ENF Committee al-lowed us to meet our ENF goal and the Home Services Committee and volunteers worked to ensure our breakfast fund raisers were a success every month.

Fraternally Yours,

Jerry Rhoton

SECRETARY’S PEN! Happy Holidays everyone. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We hope to see you at the lodge during December. Sue Nace and members of the Doe Club will be decorating for the holidays and if you didn’t stop in last December, don’t miss the opportunity to check out all of the lovely decorations. Initiation/Indoctrination is scheduled for Monday, December 2nd during our regular lodge meeting where the following individuals will be initiated into our lodge: Michael Crater, David Owens, Charles Hipple, Jr. Frank Raus, II, Gregory Hayer, Daniel Rego & Justin Hayer. The Annual Memorial Service, honoring all of our departed members, will take place on Sunday, De-cember 1st at 3 p.m. All family members and friends are invited to attend this beautiful ceremony con-ducted by our Lodge Officers. Lights refreshments will be served after the service. If any family member or friend of the deceased would like to donate flowers in their memory, it would be greatly appreciated. The Charity Ball Committee is busy with final plans and invitations are being mailed. Many changes are planned including a catered dinner. Please plan to attend and show your true “Elkdom”. Invite friends and family to attend with you. On behalf of the Lodge Officers, Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

IN MEMORIAM We shall meet but we shall miss them. There will be vacant chairs. But though we no more possess them, still our hearts their memory bear.

IN MEMORIAM

For those of us lucky to have known him it was TRULY an honor!

He lived his life to the fullest, worked hard and played hard too.

He truly represented what we as an Elk should stand for - Charity,

Justice, Brotherly Love, a genuine American patriot.

He was always there when you needed him: to listen, to speak a

kind word or to help financially.

He was the most generous member we will ever know.

To this UNWAVERING MEMBER, LOYAL FRIEND, and TRUE

GENTLEMEN of 814! No one will ever fill his shoes!

To our absent member......WOODY BOARMAN, JR.

We will miss you!

2013 is almost over. Where has it gone? My father always said that the older you get, the faster it goes. And boy has it gone fast. It seems as just yesterday we at this time of year in 2012.

On Monday November 11th we had our fifth annual Veterans Day dinner. Approximately 120 members and guests attended and I believe that all had an enjoyable evening. Our speaker was Sgt. Douglas Graybill Jr, USMC (Ret), who spoke about his life in the Marine Corp. as a “Tunnel Rat” and his deployments overseas. Sgt Graybill is very active in helping homeless veterans in the Berks County area. His wife, Liz, who was a member of the U.S. Army for 23 yrs. Also spoke about her time in the military and her deployments in Iraq. The Elks Medal of Valor was presented to the son of Capt. Nate Raudanbush, a graduate of Spring Ford H.S., and who was killed by an IED while serving in Afghanistan. The Elks Veterans Appreciation Award was presented to Dennis Slifer and U.S. Army National Guard Maj. Heather Thiret.

I would like to thank the O.J. Roberts H.S. JROTC for presenting the “Colors” and Downtown Sound for their patriotic songs, all the Pottstown Elks staff, Tim Barrett, for printing the programs, my Sue for organizing the Elks Medal of Valor, Jim Vlahos, Tom Dunn and Dave Reidenour for organizing the Veterans Golf Outing and their donation of over $6,000.00 to the Veterans Commit-tee which is donated to various veterans organizations in the area. I would like to especially thank Gina Custer for chairing the Vet-erans Dinner Committee and making the evening the success that it was. Thank you to all who attended in honoring our veterans, living, serving, and having made the ultimate sacrifice.

I’d also like to thank all the volunteers who came out on Tuesday, November 19th, to help at bingo at the South East Veterans Center. December’s bingo will be at 7 PM on Tuesday, December 17th at the Center.

While I am thanking people, I would also like to thank Bob “Red” Rhodes and his wife for shopping and purchasing the Christ-mas gifts for the veterans at the center who had submitted their “wish list” for Christmas gifts.

I hope that everyone will have a very happy and safe Holiday and a prosperous New Year. See you at the Charity Ball.

Fraternally,

Ron Nace, PER/Chairman

We did It...Our goal has been achieved in just six months...I thank all members of Elks 814 for their generous contributions to make the annual goal of 4.60%or $2944.00. We actually made it to 4.78% which equals $3,060.50. I again thank Lenoard Fillman for the donation of the Elks Clock in which we raised $325.00 the month of October to help make that goal. The winner of the clock was Kay Dobry. Our lodge is now eligible to apply for grants to be used in the commu-nity which creates nice visibility for our Lodge. Please remember all contributions to ENF are tax deductible and to make your next donation when you pay your Elks dues.

Thank you for your support. Sharon L. Johnson, ENF Chairperson
