the Kansas Board of Regents and ac-cepted applications for the Nursing Education-Direct Care and Nursing & Leadership Administration programs this fall.
We are currently in the re-accreditation process and everyone has done an amazing job of getting us ready for the visit. It has included: im-plementation of new bylaws, mapping of AACN education courses to the es-sentials, faculty & staff gathering data, committees & councils discussing & approving changes to move our curric-ulum forward and so much more! A summer task force on accreditation developed our written self-study report which was approved by the faculty this summer. Everyone has been doing an amazing job and will work on complet-ing the final product to prepare for the visit November 7th – 9th. It is going to be a great year!

very positive step. I want to thank the faculty and staff for all the work they did, and the support
of CHP (esp. the tech staff and web development team). The SON students and advisory com-
mittee are to be commended on their willingness to take time from their very busy schedules to
meet with the accreditors. I also appreciate the support received from Provost Pickus and his
staff in academic affairs. The Accreditation evaluators also gave high marks to the President
and his support of the School of Nursing.
Thanks to everyone!
School of Nursing (SON) faculty and staff heard the verbal report
from our professional accreditation evaluators today.
They reported the School of Nursing meets all professional pro-
gram standards. We also received positive comments yesterday
from the Board of Nursing reviewers. As with all program as-
sessments, in our own review we found areas we hope to im-
prove and the accreditation evaluators found a few areas that we
should address.
On the whole – very positive comments were made about the
quality of our programs, our students and faculty.
This is the first major step in the accreditation process – but a

According to the website of the academy: www.aannet.org
The American Academy of Nursing's approximately 1,890 Fellows are nursing
leaders in education, management, practice and research. They include: asso-
ciation executives; university presidents, chancellors and deans; state and federal political appointees;
hospital chief executives and vice presidents for nursing; nurse consultants; and researchers and entre-
preneurs.
Invitation to Fellowship is more than recognition of one's accomplishments within the nursing profes-
sion. Academy Fellows also have a responsibility to contribute their time and energies to the Academy,
and to engage with other health care leaders outside the Academy in transforming America's health care
system by:
Enhancing the quality of health and nursing care;
Promoting healthy aging and human development across the life continuum;
Reducing health disparities and inequalities;
Shaping healthy behaviors and environments;
Integrating mental and physical health care; and
Strengthening the nursing and health care delivery system, nationally and internationally
Dr. Barbara Morrison, PhD, RN, CNM
Janice M. Riordan Distinguished Professorship in
Maternal & Child Health Ask Dr. Barbara Morrison where she finds her enthusiasm and she is likely to tell you she is the ultimate, passionate
educator and scholar. Dr. Morrison says, “I thrive on sharing my knowledge and understanding of birth, newborns, newborn
and family adaptation, Kangaroo Care, breastfeeding, bonding, and changing health care practices to provide optimal care to
newborns and their families.”
As she learned more about infants during her experience at Frontier Nursing Service in Hyden, KY, Dr. Morrison real-
ized she wanted to know even more and decided to get her master’s in nursing and earned her PhD in Midwifery and Maternal
-Child Health.
At Case Western Reserve University, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Dr. Morrison joined forces with Drs. Su-
san Ludington and Gene Anderson to explore and promote Kangaroo (skin-to-skin) care. This scholarship and the work with
Drs. Ludington and Anderson have led to the development of the Kangaroo Care Certification Course sponsored by the United
States Institute of Kangaroo Care and the Skin-to-Skin Learner’s Manual.
Dr. Morrison lives in Wichita and has two daughters.

WSU nursing students have winning down to
an art. On August 28th, at the 13th annual convo-
cation, nursing students took 1st place with their
banner. Nursing students previously took first
place in 2010 and have placed in the competition
in previous years.
Students Elizabeth Boyarski , Alex Leach and
Alisa Smith put in a lot of time and effort in creat-
ing the banner. They estimated the time spent
designing and creating the banner was at least
eight hours.
Smith said winning was worth the effort of “A
lot of hot glue and burnt fingertips”
A significant amount of
that time was spent de-
signing the banner and
at Hobby Lobby picking
out material. But for
their efforts the students
received $150 from
Dean Cohen.
Boyarski, Leach and
Smith said they based
their banner on the elec-
tion, the Olympics and
everything patriotic.
The students admitted
they didn’t expect to
win. Although none of
the three were able to
attend convocation as
they were at clinicals,
they were extremely

Third and fourth semester WSU Nursing students learn how to re-
spond in situations they may encounter on the job through simula-
tion experiences. The interprofessional education simulation at
Wesley Medical Center (WMC) was conducted Wednesday, No-
vember 14 by Dr. Paul Uhlig of the Mid-Continent Regional Center
for Health Care Simulation.
The simulation brought together WSU nursing students, KU School
of Medicine, Wichita medical and pharmacy students and respitory
therapy students from Newman University.
At WMC students practiced a simulation scenario of a of a man
(mannequin) who had recently suffered a heart attack and was ex-
periencing unusual behavior. Students in Phyllis Fletcher’s
_________class worked together with the other students to deter-
mine the man was experiencing bleeding from the groin.
Madison Hirt, a fourth?? Semester student said the experience,”

On Friday October 5, Dean Peter Cohen announced he was stepping down as Dean of the College of Health Pro-fessions. In an email sent to the College, Dean Cohen wrote, “After nearly 15 years, I will be stepping down as dean of the College of Health Professions, effective June 30, 2013. I will remain at the university in a faculty role.” He went on to explain that President Bardo is committed to having a new dean in place by July 1, 2013. Dean Cohen expressed his sentiments of for the College. “Words cannot express what an honor it has been for me to serve this college. To work with so many people com-mitted to a common purpose of educating excellent healthcare practitioners, researchers, and leaders in an atmosphere which encourages respectful and collabora-tive discourse on the current and future health care problems that face our community, region, and state has been a source of daily inspiration for me over these 15 years.”
Support Wichita State University School of Nursing
The School of Nursing’s mission is to improve the health of the community by inspiring change in health care through innovation and excellence in nursing education, scholarship, practice, and ser-vice. Your gift helps us live out our mission. Even though Wichita State University is state as-sisted, the needs of our students, faculty and staff are well above what support the state provides. The WSU Foundation fills that gap by accepting private support from corporations, foundations and individ-uals. Donors provide undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, endowed professorships, fac-ulty support, equipment upgrades and more. You can make a tax-deductible contribution by go-ing to www.wichita.edu/give and on the first page, select “Please direct my gift to:” and then type in School of Nursing. Then, select a pre-determined amount or type one in. For more information, contact Lynette Murphy, sen-ior director of development, at (316) 978-3441 or [email protected].
