1 Campus Spotlights Zones 1-3 Vassar College held an End Trafficking event where they held a screening of Not My Life, followed by a question and answer session with Emily Pasnak-Lapchick, the End Trafficking Fellow from US Fund for UNICEF. They collaborated with Amnesty International for the event, and had a great turnout. People who attended said they were very moved by the film and not only learned a lot from it but became motivated to take action! The event was followed up with an advocacy campaign where we sent letters to our senators asking them to support the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. Syracuse University had their major fall semester fundraiser event, the Snowflake Ball, which was modeled after US Fund for UNICEF's black-tie event in NYC. They collaborated with Phi Iota Alpha, to hold this semi-formal gala featuring student performing groups, refreshments, and student advocacy organizations. This year they focused on promoting campus unity, and they hope to host this successful event every year. Boston University hosted its first ever UNICEF Masquerade on Halloween day this year in an effort to raise funds for UNICEF's Trick-or-Treat campaign. BU community members came, decorated masks, guessed the number of candies in the candy jar, ate delicious free food, and listened to great music--all while supporting UNICEF. BU UNICEF partnered with BU's FIA chapter to during this event. Despite the hindering effects of the hurricane during the days leading up to this event, our members' enthusiasm made the event shine. A member of UNICEF at Miami University said in reference to their events this past semester: I could not be more proud or excited for the great things our university chapter did in just one month for Trick or Treat for UNICEF. This is a campaign driven by SPARE CHANGE and we made almost $1000...that is amazing.Just a reminder of what a huge number that is: - Just 7 cents provides 50 kids with safe water for a day - $2 buys 1 liter of therapeutic milk for a child who direly needs nutrients - $19 buys 3 mosquito nets to protect kids from malaria - $257 provides an emergency classroom for 40 kids and Miami University raised just enough money ($500) to buy a water pump for an ENTIRE community! At the beginning of their semester, UNICEF at Tulane University had a tabling event to educate their community and raise money for the events occurring in Syria. They also had a bake sale for Parent's Week and a Mini Mile of Change while advocating for the Convention on the Rights of a Child. Meanwhile, members of UNICEF at LSU have kept busy volunteering at the Baton Rouge Boys and Girls Club, below are some pictures from the past semester: Campus Spotlights 1-3 1 Campus Spotlights 4-6 2 UNICEF Campus Initiative Newsletter December 2012, Vol. 2 Issue

Campus Spotlight Zones 4-6

On November 10, Griz for UNICEF at the University of Montana held their 2nd annual “Griz for UNICEF” International Fundraiser Dinner. Griz for UNICEF held the International fundraiser dinner in conjunction with the Brazilian, African, and Persian Student Association at the University of Montana. The event featured authentic international food, and cultural dances from international students, such as the Brazilian Quadrilha and Georgian folk dance. The Campus Initiative applauds Griz for UNICEF’s efforts and commitment to ending child deaths around the world with an amazing annual fundraising event such as this.

Farther down south, Texas A&M University hosted a Not My Life screening and had a survivor share her story before the film screening. Club members first educated attendees about UNICEF USAs End Trafficking Campaign which aims to spread awareness about human trafficking throughout the world. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage others to take whatever action they can to stop modern-day slavery.

In late November, UNICEF at USC held a screening of Justice for My Sister, a film about a young woman named Rebeca in Guatemala who was brutally murdered by an ex-boyfriend. The film follows her sister’s struggle to find justice for Rebeca against very adverse circumstances.

UNICEF at Cal as well as Cal Habitat for Humanity are planning a Run for the Horn 5K later next semester. The Proceeds of the run will go towards aid for the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. If you find yourself in Northern California near Berkeley on April 22nd, make sure to stop by!
