Steve Kidd - President

President’s Corner

My Final President’s Corner……Part 2 Zonefest and a farewell to those that have enjoyed reading my column

Three years goes by awful fast when you’re President of GCR. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President and hopefully have lived up to your expectations as a club leader. I want to thank all the officers, directors and

committee chairs that I have served with for continuing to put on fantastic activities that our members enjoy. In addition, I want to thank all the unsung heroes that prefer the behind the scenes stuff, as well as our advertisers and sponsors that contribute when and where needed. Finally, I want to thank our members for being a great group of friends and what Dottie and I call our Porsche family. I’ll be continuing in the role of Past President, as a club race committee member and Co-chair of the 2013 Zonefest. Speaking of Zonefest , it’s time to segway into the main part of this article, so backspace to the November Presidents corner and read on! After the concours is finished and everyone has had lunch, we start the rally. The 2013 rally will be a gimmick rally, similar to the one at the 2012 Zonefest. In my opinion these are more exciting and less stressful than TSD rallies and offer fun for the whole family. Here’s an actual question from this year’s gimmick rally…as we were leaving the start one of the first clues was “elephants pride” …. so I looked at a group of stores and there’s one named “TUSK” …. so that was the answer they were looking for! The rally should be 2-3 hours long and bring the thirsty group back to a cold keg overlooking the track from our Hospitality suite. This is where you can turn in your score sheets, chill out and discuss your adventure with fellow rallyists, and maybe get a glimpse at whatever may be still going on trackside. The day’s activities continue with a cash bar/social hour, followed by a dinner, the cost of which is included in your registration fee. The dinner plans are not finalized yet but Saturday most likely will be casual and possibly a buffet.

The fun starts again on Sunday … But you get to sleep in or enjoy the town of Sebring and surrounding attractions in the morning. Starting around 11:30 we’ll have a box lunch at the Autocross (AX) site and be administering the Tech Quiz. You must let us know in advance if you will be coming over to the AX for the box lunch so we can order enough food. The plan is to have the Autocross on that big strip of concrete between turns 16-17 (where all the team trucks park for Club Race). However, an alternative site may be used (such as the skid pad) if our 1st choice can’t be secured. For autocross classes we will use the Parade Competition Rules (PCR’s) for midsize regions and require a tech inspection on-site prior to start. The autocross promises to be very competitive and we understand hot shoes from all over the southeast (Tennessee, Smokey Mountain, Peachstate, Heart of Dixie Regions, as well as all of Zone 12) will be attending with the intent to capture Men’s

and Ladies FTD. I expect the host region (Gold Coast) will rise to the challenge and bring out the very best in every class and attempt to really kick butt.

After the autocross, the atmosphere will switch back to party mode for a little hospitality before the main social event of the weekend, the Sunday awards banquet. Trophies will be awarded for all the competitive events (concours, rally, autocross, and tech quiz) and the 2013 trophies are slated to be collectors’ items, commemorating GCR’s 50th anniversary. A points value will be attributed to each event you participate in and an overall “in region” men’s and ladies winner will be selected and an overall “out of region” men’s and ladies winner will also be recognized. Sunday’s dinner is also included in the registration price and we will have a cash bar before and during the banquet.

New to the Zonefest agenda is a DE, planned for Monday (Memorial day). We expect this event to fill up quickly since registration will be separate from Zonefest and lots of Suncoast/Goldcoast members may drive up for the day. The plan is to use the standard format used with GCR DE’s, with blue and green group/students, yellow/solo and red/instructors. The price has not been finalized but is expected to be around $200 for students or solo and $50 for instructors.

In addition to the above activities we are organizing some family and kids activities for those that would like to “hang out” rather than compete. Dottie and I have attended many fest events over the years and hopefully will be taking the best of each fest event and applying it to what we hope will be one of the best events ever. My thanks to those that have helped so far (Laz, Kirk, Dottie, Beena, Ed, Vivian, Alex, Michael, Nancy and others) and those that plan to help by offering some special talent that can be used to make this a truly great Zonefest. We are still looking for sponsors, vendors/door prizes, and members that have something to contribute…want to join the team? give me a call and/or visit the Zonefest website for more information. Yes…we have our own website (thanks Laz)….www.zonefest.org

In closing I’d like to leave some summary information and hope you have saved this date…May 24-27, 2013 Registration: Planning to open around 1/1/2013 on clubregistration.net…Price per person will be $125.00Host hotel: Reserve your hotel accommodations at the Chateau Elan with the special rates of $95.00 to $115.00 per night using offer code Zonefest 2013 phone (863) 655-7200 and visit their website http://www.chateauelansebring.com/Contacts: Steve or Dottie Kidd (954) 946-3196 or use the email addresses in Kassette or www.Zonefest.org.

Hope you have enjoyed all my Presidents corner articles…. see you Memorial Day weekend.

Fred Kohly, Concours Chair

Concours Corner: Clean Wheels

I hate loosing points on wheels, and you should too. Wheels are such an integral part of the beauty and esthetics of your vehicle, that many people go to great lengths and

even thousands of dollars to upgrade their wheels. Great looking wheels can really enhance the splendor and appearance of your car, as well as provide personal enjoyment, and can even affect performance. Keeping your wheels clean is a little like keeping your shoes clean. I recently attended a wedding where the groomsmen decided not to rent the shoes with their tuxes. Get the picture?

Cleaning your wheels can be a little tedious, depending on your wheel design and your own attention to detail. It can take some time; but in Concours, wheels are sometimes the easiest part to get a perfect score on, and all those points add up. Depending on the judging event rules, at times only the outside may be judged. But in some “full” events, the judges will look at both the outer surfaces and inner

surfaces. I always clean the inside and outside regardless of the event! I think it makes a statement to the judges that you know what you are doing, and all those “brownie points” can go a long way. When you are done, the work will have been worth it.

How you clean the wheels is not as

important as how clean they are. There are lots of cleaners on the market today. Just make sure you use soft and gentle detergents or cleaners that will not damage your wheel surfaces.

I completely remove my wheels from the car, and recommend that you do if you are into serious Concoursing. I clean every nook and cranny and make sure that they are as close to perfect, factory-looking, as possible. I touch up any little scratch with wheel paint available from Wurth Products. Also, I make double sure I don’t leave any tire dressing on the rims. (Speaking of tire dressing, don’t forget to clean the tires thoroughly in the process, or you will be applying dressing on dirty, greasy, dull rubber.) Some words of advice on the dressing: don’t overdo it. Judges hate sticky, excessively glossy tires. Try to make them look magnificent, but dry and clean.

There are many reasons to keep your wheels clean besides elegance. However (and this is for everyone regardless of whether you Concours or not) one really important reason is:

8 Die Porsche Kassette | December 2012

Fred

“protection”. Wheels take an incredible amount of abuse from road oils, rainwater, and various different types of deposits, including the worst enemy of all – “brake dust.” Brake dust is the problem that never goes away, so we have to live with it. It is a fine powder residue from the wearing away of the brake pads, and contains carbon fiber metal filings that build on the wheel surface. To make matters even worse, those filings may be red-hot, further exacerbating any problems. It can be sticky and collect in every microscopic nick, pore or crevice of your wheels. If left there for extended periods of time, it can do irreparable damage. It won’t take long before this highly corrosive powder eats into the surface of your wheel coating, and even pit the metal.

Whether you have chrome, polished aluminum, or clear-coated painted wheels, clean and beautiful accents will make a statement. You will enhance the beauty of your car and help protect your investment for a long time to come.

What a great year for Gold Coast members, our event and social chairs provided us with a full plate of fantastic events. We also worked on expanding our Concours program to train new concours judges and teach our members to continue the region’s tradition of national championship concours preparation. This effort was lead by Concours Chair, Fred Kohly who also writes the Concours Corner

that appears monthly in the Kassette. The information in his articles is used by our members and other regions to improve their concours skills. Another great contributor to the club and the Kassette is Pedro Bonilla. Pedro is a GCR board member, 48 Hour Club Race Tech chair, and the author of our Tech Corner. Pedro’s tech articles are published in over 39 PCA club magazines. Pedro chaired the By Law Update Committee who revised our bylaws and setup the new On-Line voting system that will help to save money and gather feedback data from our members. When you receive an E-Mail blast to advise you of an upcoming event, it is provided by another of our board members, Ed Kohly. Ed is also our Membership Chair. Ed wears many hats helping his brother Fred with driving events and his wife Beena

with social events. Ed is working very hard to introduce new members to the club but to also retain and grow our membership. Several years ago our web site needed to be upgraded and although many programers worked on it we never progressed. Along came Laz Ortega and in no time we had a site that worked and looked great. Since then Laz has continued to improve the site and provide the members with state of the art technology such as in car live coverage at our 48 Hour Club Race. Laz also maintains the 48 Hour Club Race web site. At the end of this month our president Steve Kidd will be retiring after serving as president for three years. He and his Dottie were the main engine of our autocross program for many years. Dottie is our Treasurer this year and will continue in 2013. Steve has brought many improvements to the club and helped our members receive national awards. I would like to thank all the others that help to make our club to be such a great club. Without our dedicated volunteers, we would not be able to provide the members with such world class events. We have a big year coming up with the 50th Anniversary and Zonefest.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. Roger

Collier Muesum Rally & Tour

We were all a little concerned whether this event would even take place because of the Hurricane Sandy that was in the vicinity. But as it turned out, everything was fine, very windy and sometimes a little chilly, but an overall beautiful day. We could actually feel the headwind affecting the car and Ed had to do all he could to keep the car from swerving side to side.

There were three meeting locations, two in Miami and one in Broward. The majority of people went to the 84 diner which worked out very well since I was doing all the registration.

We left at 8:30 am and met up with the Miami groups on I-75. We stopped a

few times to re-group since getting out of the 84 diner was a little challenging and we lost people a few times because of the traffic scenario.

About 92 people and 40 cars made the journey. We had 120 RSVP but only 92 showed up. The ones that did not show up missed an amazing time. We will do it again in 2-years so look out for it in the Kassette in 2014.

The tour started at 10:15 am and ended at 12:15 pm. As usual, the tour was exciting, interesting and those who had never been there were in awe. It was definitely worth it and for those who had made the trip previously, they were

just happy to be there. I also think that some people just went along for the rally because they absolutely love driving their Porsches’.

Immediately following the tour, we had lunch at Spanky’s restaurant, which was only two blocks from the Museum. The food was good but the service could have been better. I also thought it was really nice that they put on their restaurant sign “Welcome Porsche Club”. That was really cool to see.

In summary, the event was a great one. Thanks to all the members who attended and to Fred and Ed Kohly for your help in making this another successful event.

48 Hours at Sebring - 201320th Anniversary

Preparations are well underway for the upcoming event and with this being the 20th Anniversary race, you can be assured this year’s Club Race will surpass last year’s event and far exceed your expectations. The dates for the event are January 31, 2013 through February 3, 2013.Registration for race weekend volunteers is now open at www.48HoursAtSebring.com. Advanced Solo registration opens Friday, November 23rd at 8:00 p.m. sharp. Racer registration will open in early December. Keep checking the www.48HoursAtSebring.com website for further information. We are fortunate to have the full support of our great sponsors, drivers and dedicated committee members, along with our wonderful Volunteers. Volunteers are the most important piece of the equation. Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: Electronic Stability Control

Electronic Stability Control is known by many acronyms and names, such as: AdvanceTrac, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC),

Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), Vehicle Stability Enhancement (VSE), StabiliTrac and last but not least, Porsche Stability Management (PSM).

But what is it?A vehicle’s Electronic Stability System uses on board computers to control each individual wheel’s brakes and assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle by keeping the vehicle headed in the direction the driver is steering, even when the vehicle nears or reaches the limits of road traction.

When a driver attempts a sudden corrective maneuver, for instance to avoid a crash or because (s)he misjudged the severity of a curve, (s)he may lose control if the vehicle responds differently than expected as it reaches the limits of road traction than it does in ordinary driving. This loss of control can result in either the tail of the vehicle spinning out, or the front of the vehicle plowing out.

As long as there is sufficient traction, an experienced track driver could maintain control in many of these conditions by using countersteering (momentarily turning away from the intended direction of the car) or ... as Doc Hudson Hornet (Paul Newman) expertly explained to Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson):

“turn right to go left” in the animated movie Cars.

Image courtesy of Pixar Animation Studios

Generally, in panic situations with the vehicle beginning to spin out of control, average drivers would be unlikely to countersteer like a race driver, to regain control.

To help the driver in such a predicament, Porsche Stability Management (PSM) or any other form of ESC uses automatic braking of the individual wheels to adjust the vehicle’s heading if it departs from the direction the driver is steering. Therefore it prevents the heading from changing too quickly (spinning out) or not quickly enough (plowing out). ESC cannot increase the available traction. It only affords the driver the maximum possibility of keeping the vehicle under control and on the road in an emergency maneuver using just the natural reaction of steering in the intended direction.

But Porsche has gone way beyond the requirements for ESC by the introduction of PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) for manual transmissions and PTV Plus for cars equipped with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK).PTV and PTV Plus are optional systems which increase the dynamic performance and stability of the car by varying the distribution of torque to the rear wheels. These systems include a mechanically locking rear differential.

30 Die Porsche Kassette | December 2012

Page 31: December 2012 Kassette

When the car is driven aggressively into a corner, some brake pressure is applied to the inside rear wheel. Thus, a greater amount of drive force is distributed to the outside rear wheel, inducing an additional rotational pulse (yaw movement) around the vehicle’s vertical axis.

Some people complain that all of these “nanny” controls are taking away the fun of driving but at least in Porsche’s case, you can switch off the function (PSM). Well, almost. Porsche’s PSM remains set to intervene if the vehicle is braked and ABS assistance is required. One great feature of PSM is brake precharging. If you suddenly release the accelerator pedal, PSM automatically prepares for your next action: the braking system is precharged so that the brake pads are already in light contact with the rotors and maximum braking power is achieved much sooner. When brake assist detects a panic braking situation it generates the optimal braking pressure required for maximum deceleration. Neat stuff!

As part of a comprehensive plan to reduce the serious risk of rollover crashes and the risk of death and serious injury in those crashes, The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards Rule No. 126 requires ESC systems on all passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and busses sold in the US with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 lbs or less as of model year 2012.The National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) estimates that ESC technology will reduce single-vehicle crashes of passenger cars by 34% and single vehicle crashes of SUVs by 59%.

Chicken Tetrazzini

8 oz. spaghetti 1/4 c. sherry or Marsala¼ c. butter ¼ c. shredded Parmesan 1 tsp. salt cheese¼ tsp. nutmeg 2 c.cooked, cubed chicken2 c. chicken broth ¼ c. chopped green pepper1 c. light cream ½ lb. sliced mushrooms1 egg yolk

Preheat oven to 350°. Break spaghetti into 2 inch pieces and drop into 6 cups rapidly boiling water. Bring water again to boil. Stir constantly with wooden spoon for 3 minutes. Drain in colander and transfer to a warm buttered bowl.

Meantime, melt butter over low heat; blend in flour, salt and nutmeg and stir constantly until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in broth and cream, then bring to a boil, stirring for one minute.

Next, stir in wine and cheese, then add sauce to spaghetti. Add chicken, green pepper, mushrooms and egg yolk to spaghetti and sauce, blending thoroughly. Pour into buttered 13x9x2 inch baking dish and sprinkle with almonds. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes. Serves 6.

This dish is perfect for a progressive dinner. It can be made ahead of time and put in the oven for the requisite time. It also freezes wellLew Moorman, National Secretary, Porsche Club of America

Chicken “Wu”

3 c. diced, cooked chicken (5 c. 1 c. sour cream is even better) 1 large can mushrooms 2 c. diced celery (bits and pieces are fine)½ c. finely chopped onion 1 can water chestnuts, 2 cans cream of mushroom soup sliced (undiluted) 2 cans chow mein noodles1 c. salted cashews

Mix chicken, celery, onion, soup, sour cream, mushrooms and water chestnuts. Add all but 1/3 can chow mein noodles (which will be used for topping) and cashews. Mix gently, do not overdo and crush the noodles. Turn into ungreased rectangular 2 ½ to 3 quart casserole. Sprinkle with remaining noodles. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until very hot and bubbly. Serve at once. Serves 10 to 12.

This makes an excellent buffet dish. All ingredients can be chopped ahead of time, refrigerated in separate containers and mixed together just before popping into oven. Fresh asparagus tomato salad (with fresh chopped basil sprinkled over) and a yummy chocolate dessert go well with this dish, and men love it!Anne Woodham, North Florida Region
