PLANETARY INDICATIONS FOR

INSANITYDR. B. V. RAMAN

Lead Article

THE MOST BAFFLING of man’s problems has alwaysbeen the human mind. Western science is proud that

it has begun to conquer nature and is talking in terms ofcosmic flights though compared to the dimensions of thecosmos, which are inconceivable, the astronaut’s orbitingof the earth at a height of about 200 miles seems child’splay. In contrast to these achievements in the realm ofphysical science, there is a lamentable lack of developmentin the more important aspects of human existence, viz.,mental and moral sciences.

While the ancient Hindu Sages had under-taken asystematic analysis of the internal world of man on the“eternal principles of human nature”, the Westernscientists have mainly confined their studies to theexploration of the “physico-chemical mechanisms”under-lying man’s existence. The human mind and itsmysterious functions continue to be mysteries to theWestern scientists, even though the symptoms of differenttypes of mental diseases have been well classified. In thewords of Dr. Carrel, “mathematics, physics and chemistryare indispensable but not basic sciences in the researchesconcerning living organisms. They are not capable ofconstruct-ing concepts, specific to the human being”.

Astrology or Jyotisha is indeed the science of the highestrank because it correlates the functioning of the innerworld of man to the ceaseless ebb and flow of the cosmos. While the materialistic science can perceive only the grossbody, contituted by heredity, the subtle body (lingasareera) carrying the karmic vasanas (impressions) ofprevious existences, escapes its grasp. It is the karmathat conditions one’s existence in this life and the natureof this karma manifesting on the physical and mentalplanes is reflected in the horoscope.

In an article published in a recent issue of Reader’s Digest, one Mr. Rutherford Platt suggests that man’s bio-rhythms—temperature, blood pressure and moods—follow regular swings and are linked to “fluctuations inbarometric pressure, gravitational field and electricity inthe air” and that these “earthly forces are in turn affected

by forces from outer space—by the phases of the Moon,by undula-tions in the pear-shaped electromagnetic fieldthat surrounds the earth, by showers of gamma rays, cosmic rays and other electro-magnetic waves emanatingfrom extra-terrestrial sources (italics ours) that bombardthe earth’s atmosphere”. According to Dr. Harold Burr, emeritus professor of anatomy at Yale University Schoolof Medicine, “what esta-blishes the pattern of a particularhuman brain and ‘regulates and controls it’ is actually acomplex magnetic field”. Therefore, “in a manner not yetdiscovered, earthly magnetic fields may influence humanbehaviour, their rhythmic ebb and flow producing withinour brains cyclical changes in feelings, alertness andsensibility and perhaps even stirring the memory or incitingideas”. And these changes in the earth’s magnetic fieldare affected by solar flares, which in their turn arecorrelated to certain definite planetary arrangements. Andall this is astrology pure and simple but put in the jargon ofWestern science. Would the reaction of each individualon earth to these cosmic bombardments be the same ordifferent? The scientists do not yet know. But astrologershave already discovered that the reaction of an individualdepends upon his particular pattern of the horoscope.

It is the increasing incidence of neurosis and psychosis inthe civilised countries of the West that seem to haveimpelled scientists there to study the correlation of celestialfactors to human behaviour-patterns.

Modern psychologists and medical men have not agreedamongst themselves about the exact causes of insanity. One school of thought still holds that insanity is due tocertain organic changes in the brain. According to anotherschool of thought, the majority of cases of insanity are“psychogenic in origin”. Yet another school regards insanityin the light of “biological or psycho-biological reac-tions”.It is significant to note that Hindu astrology gives pride ofplace to the affliction of the Moon (manas) and Mercury(brain) in judging mental disorders. Observation andstatistical study have shown that insanity in most cases iscongenital and in a few, acquired. A more careful study

HAVE YOU A SITE? Are you planning toconstruct your home? Here are basicprinciples of Vastu that you need to follow

that can enable you to come with a nice Vastuappropriate home?

The normal requirements of a moderate home areaddressed here. However we suggest that based onthe major planetary transits, the orientation andsuch other factors, vastu appropriate changes canbe made. A door (that allows life energy into theroom) gets strength only when it has four frames. Also, it is necessary that a door is never pushed tothe extreme corner of the room.

BathroomThe eastsector is bestsuited for abathroom (notthe toilet)since theb e n e f i c i a lrays of themorning sun

fall into the room. Manasara says : The centraleastern frontage called Aditi is the place forbathrooms. The bathroom, where one has his dailybath is best in the east. The morning rays of theSun are extremely beneficial for one’s health, body, metaphysical and political.

The slopes within the bathroom can be towardsnorth and east so that water drains into the north-

east of the bathroom. The geyser or the boiler canbe in the South-east of the bathroom. Mirrors canbe only on the east and north walls.

Master BedroomThe southand westsectors ofthe homecan be forthe masterroom. Sleepwith yourhead to the

south. Outside the master room, a rock gardencan be made. This will provide a natural setting asyou look out from the window. This room maybe occupied by the father or the eldest sonof the family. The central south is alsorecommended for the elder son. The south orwest of the room can be a s tore ( fordocuments, etc) or wardrobe with ventilationon either side suitably provided. The beds orcots need to be away from the walls.

The north of the northwest of room of the housecan also be used to store valuables, propertypapers, cash , jewellery etc. Master bedrooms(if in the southwest sector) can doorpoorvaeashanya (east of northeast) of the room. The dressing table can be in east or north of theroom. The attached bath can be to the north-westor south-east of the room.

ASTROLOGY IS A TOOL WHICH helps indicatethe likely events in one’s life. The individual is given

a blue print of his life, based on which he can carefullyplan the steps to be taken in order to optimize it. Anastrological student times the events based on Dasa-Bhukti, transits and other heavenly phenomena. Of these,Dasa-Bhukti is given primary importance.

The Vedic seers have given different Dasa-Bhukti patternsbased on which a student of astrology can effectively timethe events. The Vimshottari Dasa system is consideredthe foremost of all. Dr. B. V. Raman tells us that it can beused at all times irrespective of the nationality, caste, sexetc and is universally applicable. The next best Dasasystem that can be adopted is Kalachakra Dasa. Certainevents which are difficult to decipher from VimshottariDasa can be effectively inferred with the help ofKalachakra Dasa.

The FundamentalsKalachakra has two words – Kala meaning time andChakrah meaning cycle. Kalachakra therefore means acycle of time. There are arguments saying that KalachakraDasa is applicable only when Navamsa lord where moonis situated is strong. Parasara says that we can apply theDasa system to all charts. Experience also suggests thatit is universally applicable.

Kalachakra

Dasa SystemRAMAN SUPRAJARAMA

Kalachakra system considers the position of the Moon tofind out the Dasa-Bhukti patterns. The birth star and thepada of the Moon are to be considered. The stars aredivided into Savya (right to left) and Apasavya (left toright) groups. Groups of three stars each are made andnumbered. Odd groups are known as Savya and evengroups are known as Apasavya. Effectively, we get fivesets for Savya group and four for Apasavya group.

For Savya group, the Dasa counting is to be made in theclockwise direction ie Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and soon. For Apasavya group, counting has to be made in the anti-clockwise direction ie Vrischika, Tula, Kanya and so on.

Order of DasasIn case of Savya group, the first cycle will be from Aries toPisces (clockwise), second from Scorpio to Sagittarius (anti-clockwise), third cycle will be similar to first and so on. Incase of Apasayva stars, the first cycle will be from Sagittariusto Scorpio (clockwise), second from Pisces to Aries (anti-clockwise), third cycle will be similar to first and so on. Only9 signs are considered for Dasa pattern. The first sign andlast sign in Savya group are considered to be Deha and JeevaSigns and the reverse in case of Apasavya group.

The calculation of Dasa sometimes seems confusing andthe ancients have given sutras which can be adopted toeasily identify the Dasa pattern.

Greater Chicago

Ramayana for the FamilyDr. Sureshwara is a scholar involved in the fields of VedicAstrology, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata,Management and their applications in life. He spoke on“Ramayana for the family” to an audience that was virtuallyglued to the seats. He congratulated the students for theoutstanding musical performance that kept the audience spell-bound throughout the various presentations. Sri Ramayana isa historical story as well as a universal scripture that containsthe story of Sri Rama. Dr. Sureshwara said that Ramayanacontains many incidents and events that challenged the“Values” based behavior of various individuals. Values are thesingle powerful term that is used to define both “ethics” and“morals”. Sri Rama’s entire life is an example of Values basedlife. King Dasaratha was a great king but his judgment waschallenged by his infatuated-love for Kaikeyi, at the time ofappointing the crown-prince to the throne at Ayodhya.Dasaratha “agreed” to Kaikeyi's demand for two boons in theform of appointing Bharata as crown-prince, instead of Sri Rama, and to exile Sri Rama to the forest for fourteen years. Dasaratha’sbehavior was not Values based, since the throne or kingdomonly belonged to the people. He was merely a trustee of theEmpire. On the other hand, Bharatha’s behavior was Values

based, since he rejected his mother’s offer of a throne, byrightfully pointing to her and others, that as Sri Rama wasunanimously approved by the people of Ayodha and therespected leaders in the kingdom, the crown belonged only tohis brother Sri Rama. Dr. Sureshwara pointed few more eventsand incidents in Ramayana that touched on the importance ofValues. He emphasized that families must read Sri Ramayanaand repeated reading helps in better and clearer understandingof the Eternal scripture. He concluded his talk by reminding theaudience that parents are the role models for the children. Theaudience appreciated the presentation by a long applause atthe end.

Words used by the saint exposed theimmense love, divinity, respect and spiritualism that he felt forSri Rama. The Pancha Ratna Kirtis have become the diamondbench mark for evaluating and understanding the classicalCarnatic music. Proposals for marriage are thwarted by enemies and somewomen with strong prejudices.
