From the Editor

This being the Christmas edition, it falls on me as editor to thank everyone

who has had a hand in the last twelve months’ of Village Voices. There are the contributors with out whom these pages would be blank, the valiant team of folderers and the brave and intrepid deliverers.

There’s Bob Walkden who manages distribution and keeps the books in fine form and there’s Juliet Waugh who has recently taken over the role of Advertising Guru from Bob and is doing a splendid job.

But let’s not forget the advertisers who keep faith in our little publication and through their adverts enable it to be produced. And finally there is you, dear reader who puts up with poor grammar and spelling and all the other errors I fail to spot each month. A very happy Christmas to you all.

Pete Hawkins

Local CarolsThere is a tradition in our area of Derbyshire of singing carols which have long dropped out of the usual Church repertoire. ‘Curly Hark’ for example is a version of Hark the Herald…to a tune from Eyam, and there are many more. Often sung in parts they have inspiring bass lines.

For all those interested in a good sing: the Thursday Session at the Horse and Jockey will be airing local carols and other Christmas music on 22 December. Everybody welcome.

To get off to a good start there will be a rehearsal of Local Carols, open to everyone interested, in Litton Village Hall on Saturday 17 December from 7.30-9.30pm.

Something to warm the heart in the depths of winter! “It’s a Wonderful

Life” has been heralded as the most inspirational film of all time, just right as we approach this special Christmas season. Made in 1946, and starring James Stewart, it is about a man who has decided to commit suicide on Christmas Eve - until

an angel-in-training intervenes. He is then shown all the lives he has touched, and the contributions he has made to his community. And he sees how different the world would have been if he had never been born.

Tideswell Cinema has chosen this heart warming classic for December, and it will be shown on Thursday 15th at 7.30pm upstairs in The George. Guest Members are welcome, for £4.75, and don’t forget the landlord’s generous offer of a 20% discount on meals for film goers on the night.

If you would like any further information, please contact Margaret Filer on 871681.

Thank YouTideswell Preschool would like to thank Michelle and The Tideswell School of Food for a lovely morning on Monday the 10th October. The children enjoyed making bread as part of their harvest theme. Limited places are still available in January, please phone Julie or Dawn on 01298 871888 for details.

Local History Club

Peter and Kathleen Shelton returned to us on November 10th, to give the

second installment of their programme - Medieval Glass in Derbyshire. There are 47 sites to study in this county and one of them in our own beloved church. High above the south aisle, is a fragment of ancient glass depicting the Angel Gabriel, which may have connections with Lenton Priory where they have similar styles.

In our Lady Chapel there is a coloured glass panel with the letters A M, which stand for Ave Maria. When that was first installed in the 16th century nearly all the churches in England were Catholic, hence the name “Lady Chapel”. Another panel depicts the “White Rose of the Virgin” plus a white lily, again a symbol of purity.

Only 130 years later many of these stained

glass windows were being smashed and ripped out as being “idolatrous” during the Puritan period of Oliver Cromwell. These surviving fragments must have been rebuilt into the later windows that we see now.

Peter also told us of some of the new techniques for repairing glass. In the old days, any cracks in the glass panels were repaired with strips of lead - but too many of these make the picture look too heavily fragmented. The modern way nowadays is to run epoxy resin into the cracks. However, even with these new techniques, the east window in York Minster will take another six years to repair!

Another great and informative talk from a true expert in his field. At our next meeting on January 12th Stephen Coates will tell us about the great engineer Joseph Whitworth and his connections with Darley Dale.

Surgery Contact Number You may have seen some publicity about a new and easy to remember telephone number for patients: 111. This is the telephone number to use when it’s less urgent than 999.

The NHS in Derbyshire is rolling out this service but have included Tideswell and District STD codes (01298) in the new service (also 01246, 01629, 01773, 01335, 01663 and 01433.) You can use this service on a landline or mobile. All calls to 111 will be free.

Patients of Tideswell Surgery are included in this new NHS 111 service and therefore after the 25th October 2011, if you ring the surgery out of hours you will be asked to redial 111 (free of charge) and this will connect you to Derbyshire Health United.

You can also use the 111 service during the day time if you are unsure about attending the doctors, minor injuries or accident and emergency. The 111 Service will direct you to the right service, which is appropriate to you.

Tideswell Singers

Tideswell Singers have really enjoyed the opportunity to sing on home territory

with other Tideswell organisations on several occasions this year. As part of Taste Tideswell Fun Day in May they supported the young singers workshop in a mass rendition of ‘Food, glorious food’. During Wakes they shared an evening event with Tideswell Community Players and in July joined Tideswell Male Voice Choir in their annual concert. September brought a very moving concert marking the tenth anniversary of tragic events on 9/11, when the choir was joined by Tideswell Parish Church organist John Reynolds and local actor and writer, Caroline Small.

We are currently consolidating our repertoire for future concerts and preparing for Christmas. This will be a busy season as always! Starting with Carol Singing in Chatsworth Courtyard Saturday 3 December and again at Litton Christmas Market Friday 9 December. A first visit to Meadowhall Carol Singing in aid of Heart Research UK follows on Sunday 11 December. Our main concert for the festive season will be on Wednesday 14 December in the Old Grammar School. The choir will also be taking part in the Carol Service in Litton Church on Friday 16 December.

Tideswell Singers is a small, friendly choir, open to all with no auditions. We aim to perform to a high standard but we do not take ourselves too seriously. We are joined together by our enjoyment of singing and performing. New singers would be made very welcome. We rehearse Wednesday 19:30 - 21:30 in Litton Village Hall.

For more information please visit our website www.tideswellsingers.org.uk or call Carol Bowns: 01298 213577.

Cheaper Heating Oil

If you’re one of the many that doesn’t get mains gas and rely on oil for your heating,

then a new service offered by charity Rural Action Derbyshire may be of interest.

They are harnessing the purchasing power of the many rural communities who rely on oil and are able to pass on significant savings to oil-buyers. The scheme is only in its infancy, but experience has already shown that it’s possible to get a discount of around £50 on a single order. Community organisations and businesses are also be able to join the scheme.

The key to the scheme is using local people to collate the syndicate members’ oil orders once a month and pass the information on to the charity who will then let the local members know the cost per litre and the delivery date. Collators will get free membership of the scheme – an annual saving of £20. Scheme members will be able to order as many times as they like during the year, and the price will be negotiated centrally.

There’s more information from Rural Action Derbyshire on 01629 824797 www.ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk/oil [email protected].

The George

The George Hotel has undergone a facelift in time for the winter. A new

log burner and two open fires have been installed.

There’s a fantastic new lounge area full of leather sofas, perfect for that quiet cosy drink or that cold afternoon’s coffee or hot chocolate.

Some people have been saddened that the pool table has been removed (due to its lack of use) and has been replaced by a new cosy fire side seating area.

The function room is currently being converted into a dining area but will still be available for private hire for that special occasion.

Bonfire Thank YouA nice dry evening helped and the firework team excelled themselves once again to give us a spectacular display. The band, torches, Royalty and guy(s) all added to a really happy atmosphere.

The wood collectors, bonfire builders, electricians and marshals all worked hard to make things go smoothly as did the people providing drinks etc. to compliment Phillip’s roast (a first for the bonfire and a great success)

So many people helped with what is a big undertaking for a small committee and we couldn’t possibly make the evening run so well without everyone and their willing support.

Also much appreciated are the local businesses who sponsored the event – M.Markovitz, Michael Holdsworth, Plasma Coatings and Rock Solutions. Not forgetting Tindalls who donated the parkin and other goods at cost price - financially we couldn’t do it without them.

Artability DisplayDon’t forget the display of Szopkas (pronounced Shop-ka) made by Tideswell Artability. These dazzlingly colourful nativity scenes originate from Poland

The Artability Group has been busy making their own Szopka and the resulting cribs are to be placed in our parish church from the first week in December. We hope that you will all be able to come and see these delightful examples of folk art.

Artability Calendar

Tideswell Artability is a self funding group which was formed eleven years

ago to offer support to anyone in the area who has an identifiable need. In order to raise funds last year, we marketed our first calendar and the one hundred copies sold out before November.

Thus encouraged, we have produced a similar calendar for 2012 and will maintain the same price of £10 per copy. If you wish to see a calendar, or place an order, please leave a message by telephoning John on 01298 872897.

High Peak Diabetic Group

The group celebrated their 25th year by holding a party at Tideswell’s George

Hotel. Thanks to Simon for providing a wonderful buffet.

Richard Lane, President of Diabetes UK came from London to present a Nebarro medal to member John Moss who has been receiving insulin injections at least twice a day for 50 years. John is a role model for all Type one diabetics. As a keen member of the Ramblers Association, John is fitter

than many a person who does not have the condition.

Treasurer Eric Parker, from Dove Holes is best known in Tideswell for running the Tuesday night Line Dancing Group at the Institute. He and wife Margaret attended, to receive the 25th year certificate.

Secretary Sue Barber thought that she was organising the surprises for guests, but the tables were turned when Richard Lane unexpectedly presented her with a 25 year achievement award from Diabetes UK.

Group stalwart Tracy Gill also gave Sue a floral arrangement from the members. The evening closed with a hilarious, and skillful dance routine by the Billerettes, Buxton’s famous majorette troupe, with hairy chests. Richard Lane was presented with a copy of the book Men in Skirts, (which tells of their 1000 performances in Derbyshire). by Tideswell royalty Shannon. Richard is new to the ways of Derbyshire folk!

High Peak Diabetic Self Help Group exists to support families with diabetes, and fun is enjoyed along the way. The next meeting is the AGM at the Buckingham Hotel, Buxton on Monday 5th December 7.00pm.

Parish Council Matters

On Sunday 13th November, the Parish Council organised the Annual Service of

Remembrance. The Parade was competently led by David Bradwell as usual. The people of Tideswell turned out in force to hear the readings by Rev Frank Taylor and Dr. Roy Jackson.

The poignant reading of the names of Tideswell and District men who killed in the First and Second World Wars, and the two minutes’ silence, were particularly dramatic and emotional for many in the crowd. Parish council vice chairman Paul Flint gave the council’s address. Councillors Sue Willis, Mary Landon, Sue Barber and clerk Lesley Bramwell took their place at the head of the procession. Council chairman Philip Swarbrick with parish councillors Julie Walton and Kath Lees controlled the traffic. Marie McGuiness was on parade with the Wakes Queen & retinue.

All the Tideswell organisations were represented and wreaths were also laid by the Order of Oddfellows, who had 500 Tideswell members during WW1. At the close of the parade, David Bradwell thanked all who had taken part. He also sent good wishes to John Lockie and Norman Gibbs, whose presence in the ranks was sorely missed. The poppy wreaths will remain at the Memorial for some time for people to visit. At the close of the ceremony, Parade members enjoyed a warm welcome at the Star Inn, for coffee.

November’s PC Meeting

There were no members of the public present at the November Parish Council meeting.

The Council’s Annual return has been signed off. The report states that the level of reserves is high. This is because invested money must be included by law. The Council is responsible for the investment of funds bequested by the late Eric Simpson, who was a long term Tideswell Parish and District Councillor. Similarly, his late

mother Mabel Simpson left money for Tideswell. The Parish Council may draw down interest accrued from these accounts, using strict criteria, but withdrawal of capital is strictly not allowed. Hence the account appears healthier than it is in practical terms. The Council is half way through the financial year and is on target, holding half of the precept for the current year. A breakdown of spending to date is attached.

Mary Landon reported on a walking survey she and Sue Willis had undertaken in Tideswell. Peak District National Park have published the Local Development Framework report which was adopted in October 2011. Sue Barber holds the copy, if residents wish to read it, please contact her on 01298 871644.

Work on the Richard Lane/Pinfold Recreation ground should start soon. Three quotes had been discussed and a fourth enquiry was received at the meeting. The work will make the area safe in accordance with the ROSPA report.

The Parish Council notice board will shortly display the Winter’s Coming information. The Council will work with the Derbyshire County Council in the event of snow. Salt reserves have already been purchased by the Parish Council. By partaking in the Snow Warden scheme, will receive more salt later, at no cost to the Parish Council.

A new notice board is to be sited for residents to use for obituary notices. Undertakers or individuals may put information on the proposed board by submitting a card to Chairman Philip Swarbrick, Councillor Kath Lees, or David Swarbrick, who may all be contacted on 01298 871862.

Please show respect by phoning at a reasonable time of day.

The Parish Clerk Lesley Bramwell has a new email address for residents to use when contacting the Council: [email protected].

Community Players

Tideswell Community Players’ autumn production was The Flint Street

Nativity by Tim Firth directed by Tony Preston which was performed in Tideswell Church before an enthusiastic audience. This comedy was about a performance of the Christmas Nativity play by primary school pupils and saw events through the eyes of the children (played by adults) and their on-looking (but not so doting) parents.

2012 is Tideswell Theatre’s 10th year of bringing professional theatre, music, dance, comedy and poetry to the village either by contracting direct with performers or as promoters through Live and Local, so come to a show in this special anniversary year. We’ll continue to have a mixture of Tideswell Community Players’ productions and these professional shows throughout the year, experimenting with new ideas and new performance spaces.

The season continues at 7:30pm on Sunday 22nd January with New Perspectives Theatre Company’s Edinburgh Festival hit How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup. This laugh-out-loud adaptation of J L Carr’s tale will appeal to football lovers and haters alike. Is it possible? Could a humble village team really have taken on football’s finest and triumphed? When an enigmatic trainer with revolutionary

theories, two of the best players ever to have disappeared from football’s top flight, and a chairman of Napoleonic ability all find themselves in the same place at the same time, it just might be! This joyous tale of the unstoppable rise of the ultimate underdog is rivetingly retold in a funny and touching new one-man show - prepare to laugh, prepare to cry, and above all prepare to believe every word! This delightful adaptation is one of this year’s (Edinburgh Festival) Fringe highlights. Five Stars.

(British Theatre Guide 2011). Performed at The Old Grammar School - behind the Church. Tickets on sale soon: Make sure you get one!

On 10th March The Way of the Drum: Taiko drumming comes to Tideswell Church in this spectacular show. It’s physical, it’s theatrical, it’s

energetic - the reverberation of the drums goes right through you and is a fantastic thing to experience. New Perspectives return on 10th May with The Honey Man, where the past seems to catch up with the present in this enigmatic tale. Both of these shows are brought to the village through Live and Local, the Arts Council and Local Authority scheme to bring top quality theatre and music to rural venues.

Further information and bookings on [email protected], or 01298 871063. Follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter, or sign up to our emailing list. Please make contact too if you’d like to help or be involved in any way.

A Christmas Feast with a Difference

Planning to eat a lot this Christmas? Some young people from the village

want us to try some different Christmas fare, and are preparing a meal in a specially created ‘restaurant’ in the Institute on Sunday 18th December, from 7.30pm to 9pm.

We are invited to pay ‘rich world’ prices for a ‘poor world’ meal - £5 (£2.50 children). What they produce would be a feast for many in the world, but for us it will seem very basic - but enjoyable, I’m sure! Please come along, or contact Lisa on 872379 or Margaret on 871681 for details. (Advance booking would be helpful, but you can just turn up on the night.)

Why are they tempting us with this odd offer? It is to raise funds for two projects that the Parish Church is supporting this Christmas. Nets Now! sends chemically treated mosquito nets to people who cannot afford them (every 45 seconds a child somewhere dies from malaria). The money raised will also support young people in crisis through Buxton based High Peak Night Stop.

Don’t miss out on this culinary build up to our Christmas celebrations! Bring family and friends - everyone is welcome.

January Double BillA Winter Warmer for JanuaryTideswell Cinema’s Paul Newman Double Bill

Two year’s ago, villagers could be seen traipsing through the snow on an icy

January Saturday, between the URC hall and The Horse and Jockey. Last year, it was a shorter journey, from the Institute to the

School of Food! And all to enjoy that great combination of food and film.

This January, at 4pm on Saturday 14th, Tideswell Cinema has chosen to present a double bill of Paul Newman films, with a meal between, at The George Hotel. The Sting will be one of the films, with the second one still to be selected. This now popular winter event is aimed at cheering us all up in the cold with something on our doorstep, and is open to everyone.

Places need to be booked, and food choices made, by early in the New Year. Further details, including the price, will soon be available. Please contact Margaret on 871681, or Tony at [email protected]

Fountain Square Church

An excited group of Israelites, hotly pursued by Egyptian soldiers, followed

Moses across the Red Sea and won their way to freedom at the latest All Age Worship service. This proved an enjoyable service for all concerned.

The next All Age Worship service will be on Sunday December 18th at 10.30 am when we will celebrate the birth of Jesus. Do come and join us and learn what Christmas really means.

The next service will be a Candlelight service on Christmas Eve, Saturday 24th at 4.00 pm when we will be singing traditional carols and listening to the story of the birth of Christ. Come and join in the festivities.

Taste Tideswell - one year on

From the Taste Tideswell Board of Directors

Taste Tideswell as a project has been going for more than two years, but the School of Food has been open pretty much a year (the official opening was at the beginning of December, though trading started properly in January. In that time (up until the end of November 2011), the school has run more than 167 courses, had nearly 1,500 paying customers and more than 1,000 visitors wanting to look round. There are currently 12 full or part time staff on the books and 14 different chefs help deliver the courses. The school supports all local shops and suppliers in the purchase of goods for the courses. For those of you who still unsure how a cookery course works, it’s really straightforward. You turn up, have a coffee, get into the kitchen and start cooking. All ingredients are supplied and you either eat or take home what you make.

Following the Village SOS programme, nearly every shop has experienced an increase in business, with some of the pubs, cafes, B&Bs, self-catering cottages and even places like the parish church, reporting a noticeable effect as a result in the increase of visitors. There is obviously considerable room for improvement and lots of things that can be done better. There is definitely much work to do to ensure the project is sustainable, but it is hugely encouraging that Taste Tideswell does seem to have made a noticeable difference to the short-term prosperity of the village. Our work with schools in Derbyshire is growing and our education programme developing day by day.

Much of the success of the Taste Tideswell project is dependent on the fantastic support by the majority of villagers and the hard work of a small but dedicated team of volunteers. To all of you we offer

you much thanks. To all those who still are uncertain about the project, please, give us another chance. Visit the School of Food at the next open day, or come and volunteer in the community garden or at one of the community events. Why not sign up to the newsletter to keep informed?

And finally, as this is the December issue of the Village Voice, a very Merry Christmas to everyone.

Tool Amnesty

It’s the time of year when gardeners are carefully putting their away their tools

for the winter months, or, possibly, shoving them out of sight and wondering why the garden shed is so full. Let us help! If you’ve got a surplus of spades, far too many forks or a glut of gloves, could you donate them to Taste Tideswell and the Community Garden? We’re getting ready for the new season now – so we know what’s needed for the New Year. We can come and collect items, or they can be delivered to the School of Food. Give us a call on 01298 871262 if you think you can help. Thank you.

WHY SHOULD WE SHOP LOCALLY?• Save money – a round trip to Buxton costs about £3.00* plus parking

• Support local businesses and local jobs

• Save time

• Save food miles and reduce carbon footprint

• Eat better - locally made food is fresher

• Where food is made on the premises or selected by people who serve you, you can be sure of its quality and origin

• The Tideswell Made symbol makes it easy to tell what’s local

• To save waste - supermarkets are designed to make you buy on impulse. Shop local and just get what you need.

• To preserve our community – shopping is a social activity and the shops we use are essential to the village, especially for the elderly and those without transport

• Value for money is often as good as the supermarkets.

You might be surprised by how keen some of the prices are in Tideswell. Don’t forget that a supermarket typically stocks around 30,000 items but often promotes only a fraction of those at a time. We are very lucky to have Tideswell Stores and the Co-op that run keen promotions and supplement the ranges of the other specialist food shops in the village.

Taste Tideswell was set up to bring more trade to the village so that our local shops and cafes would survive and thrive. The School of Food and the publicity from the Village SOS TV programme has given trade a welcome boost. But around one in three villagers do less than 10% of their shopping locally. As winter arrives and we enter the slow season for tourism, villagers should support local shops - and not just when the snow falls. You’d miss them if they weren’t there.

SHOP LOCALLY, IT’S THE SMART THING

TO DO
