Art Gallery ExhibitionsLittle Black Dress10 December – 26 FebruaryAdmission Free

In 1926, Coco Chanel launched her ‘Ford’ dress, the first definitive Little Black Dress (LBD) onto the haute couture scene. Both practical and chic, the LBD has since become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.

Using the Tullie House costume collection as well as designer garments loaned-in, this exhibition shows the evolution of the little black dress, both preceding the launch of Chanel’s Ford dress and over the successive eight decades, exploring how it has been adapted to suit wildly changing fashion styles and cultural climates – from the raunchy cocktail dress of the prohibition-era to the modest and practical dress of wartime and the mini of the 1960s, up to the present day. The costumes are contextualised by film footage, studio photography and dress patterns from each of the respective eras.

Little Black Dress has been curated by Pollyanna Clayton-Stamm, with contributions from David Sinclair. The tour is based on the original exhibition at Urbis, Manchester and The Civic, Barnsley.

Femme Fatale: What makes the Little Black Dress so iconic?

Thursday 16 February at 7.00pmA special evening exploring the LBD as a style statement in 20th century costume history and including an illustrated talk by Dr. Maggi Toner-Edgar, fashion designer and director of a ‘Creative Style’ consultancy in Cumbria. There will be the opportunity to learn about the museum’s costume collection as well as to get an exclusive tour of the exhibition.

Tickets cost £12.50 (£10.50 concessions) and can be booked on 01228 618700.

Secret Egypt:Unravelling Truth from Myth10 March – 10 JuneAdmission charges apply

Is there a mummy’s curse? Were the Egyptians obsessed with death? Did aliens build the pyramids?

Such questions are addressed in Secret Egypt, a major exhibition which examines popular modern ideas about the ancient Egyptians and uses objects to suggest that the truth might be otherwise.

The exhibition features around 200 artefacts on loan from major Egyptology collections throughout the UK including Manchester Museum, the Ashmolean and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Moving through six themes, it begins by asking what is real and what is fake via an examination of funerary objects that helped Ancient Egyptians into the sacred world of death before debunking some of the more spurious myths that have grown up around them.

Secret Egypt is a touring exhibition developed by the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry.

Exhibitions GalleryIn Search of NatureRecording Cumbria’s wildlife: past, present and future

22 October 2011 to 8 January 2012

Discover how people are putting Cumbria’s wildlife on the map. This exhibition will explore how dedicated enthusiasts have recorded wildlife in Cumbria through the years; from binoculars and notepad to net and microscope, digital cameras and even molecular analysis. Visitors can learn how to be a nature detective and register their own wildlife sightings.

The display will celebrate the pioneering work of Victorian naturalists and the establishment of a records centre at Tullie House Museum, along with key figures in the study of Cumbria’s wildlife through the last 100 years. Find out what we

know now thanks to the activities of local natural history societies, wildlife recording groups and individuals across the county who send their wildlife sightings in to the Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre (CBDC) at Tullie House. Visitors will learn what is the oldest wildlife record in the county, who is the most prolific wildlife recorder, what is the rarest species in Cumbria and the commonest, what has gone and what has just arrived - and why.

Admission to the Exhibitions Gallery is free to Tullie Card holders (available to Carlisle district residents), Friends of Tullie House and the under 5s. Museum entrance charges apply to others.
