AIDS memorial has something for everybody to see

When I was ten years old, a high school friend took me to the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. Urban: Prepare to be breathalized

Charlotte Worsley announced on Monday, Nov. 28, that every Urban student who attends a dance will be breathalyzed to determine if they have been drinking alcohol. It was done to eliminate biases, so that students cannot be singled out if they look suspicious.

Urban in the wintertimeUrban reiterates the dress code

It was the kind of memo that high school administrators send every day: On Monday, Nov. 7, authorities at the Urban School remind-ed students to heed the dress code after a series of armpit-revealing tank tops graced the school’s hallways. Dean of Student Life Charlotte Worsley explained in an email addressed to the entire school that “students are expected to use good judgment and dress appropriately for a school setting,” implying that students as of late are failing to meet these standards.

Brawling with booze: Urban adopts

breathalyzer policy for dances

The beloved Urban winter tra-dition is back: On Friday, Jan. 20, 40 Urban students will depart on a bus to Squaw Valley Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe, and embark on the annual ski trip. The trip comes after a one-year hiatus. Urban stu-dents have been going on the trip since at least 1989.

“My relationship to meat? I eat it.”-Jordan Clark ('12). As Clark shares her simple and straightforward attitude towards meat-eating, both she and I are put at ease, for this state-ment presents nothing objectionable. Until you remember that when you eat meat, you are eating an animal. A creature that once lived, breathed, and frolicked in green pastures. Except it didn’t.

Urban annual Holiday Shootout

Urban annual Recent Graduation Reunion

Urban's Dance Commitee plans upcoming hoedown

On Dec. 15 through Dec. 17, Urban will host the 2011 Urban Holiday Shoot-out, which is Urban’s 11th annual girls basketball tournament. Urban faces off against The Bay School, the reigning champions of the Holiday Shootout, in the first round on Dec. 15 at 8:15 p.m. at Kezar Stadium. The Urban girls varsity team currently holds a 6-1 record.

On Dec. 17, Urban boys varsity basketball team will play International High School at 2:30 p.m. at International. The Urban boys varsity team currently holds a 3-3 record.

Recent Urban alumni, classes of ’07, ’08, ’09, ’10 and ’11, will gather on Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. for Urban’s annual Recent Graduation Reunion. Alums will catch up with their past classmates and teachers in Urban’s Old Library. Junior and senior students are also invited.

Urban’s Dance Committee met on Dec. 12 to begin planning Urban’s Winter Dance on Jan. 6. Currently, the Dance Committee is deciding between three possible themes: a Mardi Gras masquerade ball, a white-out dance with black lights, or circus-themed dance.

"Learn to play some defense."
