Float Parade Lifts Up Area Food Pantry

This year’s annual Southwestern Classic took on a new focus by spon-soring a Shopping Cart Pa-rade and Food Drive to support The Caring Place’s “Fill ‘er Up” 100 Grand Campaign.

18 student organizations and athletic teams adopted an HEB shopping cart to decorate and pre-sent at halftime of the men’s basket-ball game Friday night. Spectators were asked to show their support for Pirate Athletics, their team/organization or favorite cart by donating canned goods into one of the group's food donation boxes at the game. Prizes, donated by HEB and Which Wich, were awarded in three different catego-ries; judges choice, cam-pus choice and community

award winner.

All goods collected were donated to The Car-ing Place in Georgetown in

support of their "Fill 'er Up" 100 Grand Campaign which is aimed at filling the new food pantry with 100,000 pounds of food, the approximate amount of food they distribute over the holidays. Through the event Southwestern Uni-

versity and their fans were able to donate more than 500 pounds of food to the pantry.

Phi Delta Theta won the campus choice award for the “Phi-rannosaurus Rex” cart (pictured, center) while Kappa Delta Chi won the award for collecting the most food dona-tions. Southwestern softball (pictured, top left) won the judges’ choice award with their softball themed pirate ship cart.

With the successful turnout in both carts and food donations the Southwestern Ath-letic department antic-

ipates this to become an annual event and hopes that the parade will contin-ue to grow.

A big thank you goes to the Georgetown HEB and Which Wich for their sponsorship.

Volleyball Senior Class

Sets a New Standard for

Success

Every senior class that dons the Pirate black and gold, devoting a large part of their collegiate ex-perience to the sport they love, leaves an indelible imprint on this university, but the senior class of the 2011 volleyball team has raised expectations to new heights and given all next generation Pirates something to aim for. With a combined record of 133-20 over four years the seven seniors (pictured above, left to right), Sarai Tenerelli, Ju-lie Bartrip, Taylor Wright, Jill Wigington, Christina Nicholls, Lindsay Thomp-son and Mariad Cocke, have made Southwestern University a constant in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll. In their final season this senior class lifted the Pi-rates to their highest na-tional ranking ever, #6, under Head Coach Han-nah Long’s leadership.

The sensational overall record includes a 58-2 conference record over four years with two perfect 14-0 conference seasons (2009, 2011) and one SCAC Confer-ence Championship in 2009. This senior class is part of the 2009 squad that holds the record for most consec-utive wins with 33 and have also made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Na-tional Tour-nament, ad-vancing to the regional finals twice (2008, 2009) and regional semifinals once (2010). Numerous honors have been bestowed on this class including South-western’s first NCAA/AVCA All-America First Team, Christina Nicholls. A setter from Aus-tin, TX, Nicholls ended

the year ranked 16th in the nation in assists per set, averaging 10.64, less than one assist behind national leader Ashley Maher of St. Thomas (MN). She was the leader on the court for the Pi-rates while statistically leading in assists, was second in service aces

and fifth in blocks. “What has been wonderful about this season is seeing so many dif-ferent players step up and improve,” shares Lindsay Thompson. “It is great to say that you are leaving the pro-

gram just as strong as when you entered it.” The Pirates closed out the season at the NCAA Regional Tourna-ment in Thousand Oaks, California, falling to Chap-man University 3-1. Southwestern ended the year with a 30-4 overall record.

The 2011 Homecoming and Reunion Weekend at Southwestern University set new records in nu-merous venues, from a hole-in-one at the Pirate Golf Classic to record setting attendance.

For four years now the Pirate Golf Classic has served as the kick-off to the Homecoming & Reunion Weekend and this year they did it with flair! Southwestern's own Justin Gould (pictured, left) stole the show with a hole-in-one on the #15 par three at Teravista Golf Club. It was the first hole-in-one at the Classic and the first time anyone has won a prize for a hole-in-one at Teravista.

The foursome of former and current SU professors Bob Radford, Jess Purdy, Scott McLean and Nick Sikes (pictured, right) took home the title with a 16-under-par 56 while SU softball coach Ange-la Froboese, Sports Information Director Megan Hardin, SU Professor of Music David Asbury and SU Professor of Mathematics Kendall Richards had the dubious honor of last place with a 2-under-par 70 earning the bowling gift certificates donated by Mel's Bowling Alley, encouraging them to find a new pastime.

Later that evening the current Pirate lacrosse team gathered with former players at the lacrosse alumni mixer. It was an opportunity to exchange stories of past years and learn about the upcoming season.

Saturday began with the 11th annual Jameson 5K Fun Run/Walk and 1-mile Campus Mosey. The men's and women's cross country teams got in a good work out at the event as they prepared for South/Southeast Regionals the following weekend.

Men's and women's basketball alumni got a chance to see the current players in action and show their best skills during the alumni games following the race while the baseball alumni gathered with CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

BLOOD OR LOVE? BLOOD OR LOVE? BLOOD OR LOVE? BLOOD OR LOVE? Who knows Southwestern senior middle infielder Nate Shipp better, SU Assistant Coach and big brother Kyle Shipp or girlfriend senior volleyball right-side hitter Taylor Wright? To find out, we quizzed him then grilled them, because our athletes are competitive in every way possible!

Taylor knocks this one out of the park with 15 points. Kyle earned a respectable 10, we’ll take a .400 average from the man on the sidelines!

rolls of tape the athletic training staff uses throughout the year. (For comparison, a major Divi-sion I football team goes through that amount in 2 weeks, on average)

1500-2000: baseballs the Pirates use in one season

1080: gallons of Gatorade used in a year

The ? What He Said What They Said

Top career

moment

My freshman year at Austin College. I had 5 hits and hit

2HRs in a game that we came back to win in extra innings.

Kyle: 2HR and 5RBIs in the comeback win against Austin his freshman

year

Taylor: Getting 5 hits, 2HRs, against Austin College his first year at

Southwestern.

What actor would

portray him

Hmmm...Kyle Chandler. Yeah, sure, everyone knows him

from Friday Night Lights, but does anyone remember him in

Pure County?

Kyle: Robert Downy, Jr.

Taylor: Ryan Reynolds, because they are both witty, athletic and

cute!!!

Favorite guilty

snack

Either an M&M blast from Sonic or a lite night trip to

Whataburger. Both are very good and make me feel guilty.

Kyle: Payday candy bar

Taylor: either a snickers bar or Sonic M&M blast

What living celeb-

rity would he like

to meet

It’d either be Red Sox 2nd Baseman Dustin Pedroia (who

doesn’t love a small, power hitting second baseman?) or

WWE wrestler John Cena.

Kyle: Rey Mysterio (the wrestler)

Taylor: Dustin Pedroia

If he could play

any sport (other

than baseball)

what would it be

I think if I didn’t play baseball I would definitely play hockey.

Over the last year or so I have really gotten into it, I still love

football and college basketball but I think I would want to

play hockey.

Kyle: Hockey

Taylor: Basketball

HOMECOMING CONT.-

fans and fellow alumni at the reception sponsored by the Battlin' Buc Baseballers Alumni Connection Group.

The Homecoming Parade culminated with the official announcement and celebration of the newly reinstated football team and recognizing the women's lacrosse team that will be making the transition from a club sport to a varsity sport. Joe Seeber '63 re-ceived the first Southwestern football jersey with his name and the number 1 on the back as the lead donor for the project while President Jake Schrum led the spectators in the Southwestern fight song.

The lone true sporting event of the weekend saw the Pirates take on the McMurry Warhawks in the water. The women's swim team was outstanding as they set new records and won 7 of the 13 events en route to a 131-66 victory while the men were just edged out, falling 109-88.

The final athletics event of the weekend was the Alumni Athlete T-shirt and Tennis Shoe Reception. This year SU took the op-portunity to recognize their record holders and gave all alumni athletes an opportunity to speak about why they love Southwest-ern (photos of record holders can be seen at southwesternpirates.com). On display was the new football helmet and copies of the record books.

It was truly a wonderful weekend with perfect weather and the best of company. We hope to see more alumni and fans at future Homecoming and Reunion Weekends!!!
