Dear Parents/Carers

I have been thrilled to attend a number of recent events with our children that have made my heart ‘sing’. The performance of our Macbeth, produced by Miss Clare McCrow, was an absolute pleasure to watch. Imagine the scene: our children on stage at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage wearing the most fantastic tee shirts (with minimalistic yet such effective words). I was so proud of them all! Then we had our Winter Music Concert, with our young people performing their hearts out with particularly memorable performances from our soloists (it’s hard enough performing in a group but on your own it is much more of a challenge). We went on to have our Macbeth Performances in school in the evenings and the children enjoyed explaining more about their roles in a slightly less overwhelming atmosphere. It really is an enormous pleasure to be headteacher at AMS when we can celebrate such success.

I am still awaiting my own fate as Head Elf in the Staff Pantomimes, written by children at Arnold Middle School. I hope I do justice to my part as I don’t seem to be very good at remembering my lines or where they fit in with the rest of the cast! It will at least be fun to see the children’s work produced on the night.

As usual, our hard-working staff are busy organising trips and events throughout the year. We are ‘booked’ for a number of visits in the New Year. Our children are very fortunate indeed to have so many extra opportunities at Arnold School.

The numbers of ‘Restructuring and Redundancy’ messages that are coming from Central Bedfordshire Council are very depressing. I believe that these changes will have a significant impact on schools and in particular the provision of support services. To this end, the governors at Arnold School will be considering a number of ways to further ensure the best

possible use of our limited financial resources and to prioritise the review of other alternative service providers for things such as Pay Roll, Human Resources, Health & Safety, Insurance, software licensing and building maintenance contracts. Everyone’s belts will be tightened even further than they already are. One member of our staff is off on maternity leave: Miss Rachel Truscott is expecting a baby in the New Year and we wish her well. We have been able to appoint a temporary replacement, Mr Kentaro Saito, who will be with us until Rachel’s return in July.

In addition, we welcome Mrs Clare Newton as our part-time Science Technician and Mrs Alison Eversden as a Teaching Assistant in Chiltern Class. I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas Break. Best Wishes Ann Payne

STAFF CONTACT This term we have held a trial period whereby parents/carers have had the opportunity to use email to contact the Senior Leadership Team directly. This has proven to be very helpful in ensuring swift contact. Due to the positive feedback we have received it has been decided to extend this opportunity to enable parents/carers to contact staff directly using their school email address. We know that the system will benefit all however it is important to advise parents/carers that this communication network is not for pupils to contact staff. If you wish to use this method the address is the initial letter of the member of staff with their surname followed by @arnold.beds.sch.uk to complete the rest of the address. eg. if you wish to contact Mrs Sides the address is simply [email protected] The office contact remains [email protected] and the telephone is still manned from 8.00am to 4.30pm each day with an answerphone should the office staff be particularly busy. As always any feedback you wish to make on this improved communications system will be appreciated.

“Thoughts from the Governing Body” With frost on the cars, ice on the roads and the odds on a white Christmas the lowest they have been for many years I always find the Christmas term brings out the strangest contradictory emotions. On the one hand you have the excitement in children’s eyes as they start talking about what presents they would like to get,

the inevitable excellence of the Christmas performances and the general buzz of excitement that takes over the school. On the other you have the reluctance to get out of the house and brave the freezing morning air, the chill you can only experience from watching a children’s football match in a bleak field on a frosty day and the never ending sniffles and colds that tend to last from October to March. However, these barriers have not deterred my colleagues on the Governing Body who have been especially active this term. Highlights you may not be aware of include: • Most of the Governing Body turning out in force to welcome prospective

new parents to the school and to see the outstanding contribution so many children made in demonstrating everything that is good about the school.

• Steph Madden and Susan Edmunds visiting the school as part of the

Global Citizenship day to speak about the role of the Governing Body. • Steph Madden visiting the school for Values Day and helping out generally

with the new Year 5’s. • Clare Butler-Ellis and Susan Edmunds supporting our young musicians at

the Winter Concert. • A small working party of Governors (Tina Barbour, Owen Flack, Mark

Jones, Greg Forder and Elinor Brown) finding the time to look at our roles and responsibilities to ensure we are equipped to lead the school moving forward.

This last activity is in part preparation for a Full Governing Body meeting in the New Year when we will start the process of identifying what we think the strategic priorities for Arnold should be over the next five years. To help us do this we want to talk to pupils, staff and parents about what you think Arnold does well now, what it needs to do well in the future and where we need to

raise our game. Our aim is to bring together the creativity, the energy, the ideas and the “could do better’s” into a challenging but achievable set of priorities to guide us moving forward. As a first step I will be writing to parents and carers in the New Year asking for your views. Dear pupils and staff of Arnold Middle School,

Thank you all very much for helping with our Poppy Appeal. You helped collect £53.42 in one box and a whopping £106.85 in the other, giving a total of £160.27.

Next year Mrs Dye will be taking over from Mrs Baker in running this very important annual appeal. All the money raised goes towards helping our soldiers who have been wounded in conflict or sadly to help those families who have lost their loved ones. I do hope that you will give generously next year and support Mrs Dye in her endeavours.

Updates about Weather, Water and getting further information! The challenges of running a good school have never been greater: the greatest being the lack of co-operation received from Anglian Water. I have ‘copied’ the emails that I received, following the Anglian Water debacle. I await a response from MP Ms Nadine Dorries’ Offices as she wrote to Anglian Water Board about our concerns,

as did Central Bedfordshire Ward Councillor Janet Nunn.

Anglian Water wrote (and they know this is being put in the newsletter):

‘Thank you for your recent email regarding the interruption to supply. Please allow me to take this opportunity to apologise for the great inconvenience this causes not only you but your staff and the parents of the children at your school. I hope our conversation 24 November has gone some way to ease your concerns for any future interruptions to the supply into Barton-Le-Clay.

Dear Ann Thank you for your email. I understand the concerns that you have, especially for your children: an unbelievable situation. This is a council issue but I will contact them and make sure your concerns are being looked into. I will also be contacting Anglian Water on this issue, as it is utterly disgraceful that the children’s education is suffering. Yours, Nadine

The Barton floods were cascading down the High Street on Thursday 9th December (make a note of this date) and the school was able to open with very low pressure. However, the phone number (secret), provided by Bob Stokes to both myself and our Site Manager was not answered this morning so we had no idea whether the water would go off altogether. This meant that we had to confine the number of toilets that could be opened; provide hand gel to ensure that the children’s hands were kept clean and gather buckets of water in the hope that we could cook the school meals. This situation is intolerable! I am sure that you will agree that the response from Bob Stokes, Network Technician, suggesting the replacement of a pipe for a couple of kilometres along the A6 to be ‘as early as 2012’ as a satisfactory conclusion to the problem is disgraceful. The problems on the last two occasions have been due to ‘water falls’ appearing in Barton’s High Street. I would ask that parents write letters of complaint to: Jonson Cox, Chief Executive, Anglian House, Ambury Road, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. PE29 3NZ. Your frustrated Head Teacher.

We hope to work a lot more closely with yourselves to assist in the decision to turn away pupils and I believe we have a way forward with providing you with my personal mobile number, so you can get an accurate estimation on restoring the supply. Long term, we have put forward to our asset management team a proposal to replace the section of main that fails along the A6 from Sand Lane Silsoe up to the Speed the Plough public house. This proposal consists of burst frequency, how many properties are affected and water quality issues, which is primarily our main concern. With this information we are hoping to have a positive reply and hope to gain the investment required to replace this section of main, which hopefully could be in place as early as 2012. If there is anything else I can assist you with please don’t hesitate to contact me on the number I have provided you.

Keeping Safe Online

With such amazing technology developing everyday and with gadgets such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad we need to be extra vigilant in protecting

our children’s online safety.

This site is designed for over 13s because it can create such disharmony when used improperly, however when used responsibly it can be a useful mechanism to stay in touch with friends. As with all things the system is open to abuse and individuals can be cruel to each other and may use any tool at their disposal to hurt, embarrass, or harass someone else. It is too easy for children to become a part of online issues which can develop into serious harassment and even bullying. This in turn impacts on their learning in school as children do get distressed from these ‘faceless’ issues.

Facebook can provide a forum for unwanted comments from both friends and non friends, it can spark feuds that carry over into real life, expose photos, thoughts and feelings that once posted, are out of your teen’s control. What seemed important or funny in the moment may get you into personal trouble.

There are safety and privacy issues to be aware of with Facebook when children post their location, stating where they are and inviting friends to join them. This feature can and should be disabled.

Tips for talking to your teens about Facebook:

• Talk about controlling their information: encourage them to be selective about what they post.

• Set rules about what’s appropriate to post: thoughtful about their status updates, wall posts and comments to friends. Remember, once its posted, it’s out of their hands.

• Use privacy settings: Facebook’s default settings tend to keep information public until a user makes it private. Review the settings with your child and make sure they are set to ‘friends only.’

• Teach your child about the anonymous friends. • Disable location services: disable this service in the privacy settings of

teens accounts. • Create your own page: the best way to learn the ins and outs of Facebook

is to create your own page. • Try to monitor your child’s usage, they need independence but also need

your advice and support.


VLE News

There will be many benefits from our new learning platform with ITS Learning. A major consideration for the change is that we will be able to have a portal for parents. This will: • Include parents and carers by providing accessible information about your child’s day to day school work. • Show parents what your child needs to learn, how to learn and why. • Involve parents using tools for polls and projects collaboration. • Facilitate communication between teachers and parents with internal messaging and e-mail.

Migration to ITS Learning completed last Friday December 3rd. Both pupils and teachers are still able to access the old platform at present as it remains active for 30 days after the change over.

Homework / enrichment tasks can be accessed from the old platform or the school website at present and will be available on the school website in January until we start using the new VLE at the end of January or beginning of February after the teaching staff has received their training.

We look forward to the exciting opportunities that this will provide as well as enabling further communication and collaboration between home and school.

Global Citizenship Event by Lisa Purdue 8CMc

This event was a great opportunity to work with others in our form. We had dif-ferent tasks, the first was yoga which was really good fun as it made us relaxed and ready for the day.

We also had to produce a poem about a value. We could choose any value of our choice. Mr Williams organised a fantastic searching game. He gave us a sheet with ‘I love you’ written in different languages. We had to look around the school to see if we could work out what language ‘I love you’ was in.

Overall the citizenship 2 – day event was fantastic and everybody enjoyed it.

Charity Fair 2010

A massive thank you to all the pupils staff and parents who made our recent Charity Fair such a success. We are pleased to announce that over £1000 has been raised for our 4 different charities: Cancer research UK; Age UK; Unicef and Oxfam. As always, our Year 7 pupils designed every stall and worked hard to ensure their stall supported their chosen charity.

OUT OF SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS I have been studying for a Foundation Degree in Educational Practice at the University of Bedfordshire for two years. The course is designed for Teaching Assistants and covers topics such as supporting development in Literacy and Numeracy, PSHCE, Inclusion, Behaviour Management and Creativity in the Curriculum. Having graduated I am now completing a one year top up course to achieve a full BA(Hons) degree at the end of this academic year - watch this space! Emma Jackson (pictured on the left) I’ve always wanted to work with children, so after a career break, I decided to

retrain as a teacher. First I went to college to gain an access to Higher Education. Then I spent three years at the University of Bedfordshire studying for a BA(Hons) Education Studies degree which I have recently graduated from with a 2:1. As I have to juggle work, studying and a family, I have decided to take some time off before starting my teacher training. Lisa Nolan (pictured on the right)

ART Department

The Art department has had a successful term, culminating in the ‘Relatively Artistic’ exhibition. This year’s display was smaller than last year, but nevertheless very beautiful, showing a wide variety of work by friends and relatives of the school. Please put this in your diary for next year and try and exhibit your work in this unique exhibition. Pupils have really enjoyed looking at the work and there have been many positive responses overall.

Exhibits should be collected in the last week of this term. Many thanks to all those who exhibited.

Our year 8 pupils have been very busy producing an art homework project on ‘Fruit’ in preparation for Upper School. Please check the pupil’s sketchbooks to see the mark sheets and please sign them, so that we are aware that pupils have produced this work and that it has

been marked. It is very important that pupils produce this work and failure to do so may affect their overall levels for Upper School.

Next term our year 6 pupils will be visiting the Northampton Shoe Museum, in support of their project on ‘Shoes’. It is to be hoped that all pupils will be able to attend. Letters have been sent home with a request for £9.00 which covers the cost of travel and the workshop at the Museum. In order for this trip to go ahead, it is important that it is well supported. If you have not received this letter, please search your child’s bags. The dates are 18th, 19th and 21stJanuary. Your child will be told shortly on which day they will be travelling and a short letter will be sent home to inform you of final arrangements.

In support of this project, Art Club members will be decorating a giant shoe which will be displayed in an exhibition of clay shoes made by Year 6. The theme of the shoe will be ‘City’ and members of Holywell School Art Club will be making the other shoe of the pair, decorating it on the theme of ‘Countryside’. This will be the first time the Art Department has worked directly with another School, and hopefully this will be the start of more collaborations. The project is

due to be completed by Easter.

MUSIC Review

AUTUMN CONCERT

The first concert of the school year was held on Tuesday 23rd November. This was a very successful evening and saw a variety of different groups performing. The Wind Band, conducted by Jim O’Malley, started the evening with a rousing performance of “Chariots of Fire”. This was followed by solo items from pupils who receive instrumental lessons in school and further ensemble performances.

The Recorder Group got us thinking about Christmas with a selection of pieces on a Christmas theme. This concert saw the first performance of the newly created Folk Band. They played an English folk dance tune “Davy, Davy”.

There were other good performances by the Hand Chimes group and All Star singers. Among the solo performances was a piece written and performed by Emma Bush. This piece came out of the Year 8 classroom work on Ternary Form and was an amazing achievement for Emma.

The Orchestra, now our largest ensemble group ended the first half and began and ended the second half with 3 great performances. They ended the concert with the Andrew Lloyd-Webber tune “Memory”.

INSTRUMENTAL EXAMS

This term some of our pupils took exams on their instruments. Congratulations should go to our cellists. Abigail Denman passed grade 1, Ruth Linney passed grade 3 and Lauren Eagles passed grade 3 with merit. Mr C Cadd Leader of Music

Festivals of Light

The Winter season sees a number of religious festivals known as the ‘Festivals of Light’.

Year 6 recently completed an enrichment homework where their task was to re-tell the story behind CHRISTMAS; DIWALI or HANNUKAH.

Across faiths, light is used as a way of celebrating the awe and wonder of God and the miracles associated with these festivals.

Great Work by Catrin Ellis 6KB Well done Catrin on an outstanding piece of RE homework entitled ‘The story behind Christmas’. Catrin produced a beautiful booklet of the Christmas story and included pictures which she had made of the nativity scene from plasticine. Here are a selection below for you to enjoy.

On the bus, I was sitting with some of my best friends, Ellie, Yasmin, Manayka, James and Chris. When we got there we had to partner up so I went with James and Chris went with Henry. In the show the Prince was lively and Snow White was very graceful

and gentle. She had a lovely singing voice. The best person was Herbert the vegetarian; he is the person who looks after Snow White.

Winter Physical Education at Arnold It has once again been a highly eventful and enjoyable term within school sport at Arnold. With boys and girls fixtures continuing across a number of sports, our pupils have been enjoying all the benefits that sport has to offer. We’ll start with our highly successful basketball teams. The year 8 boys have been absolutely fantastic in both their application to training and performances during matches. The boys have played 6 fixtures to date and impressively have won 5 of them with the 1 defeat coming in a hard fought encounter at Robert Bloomfield. Well done to you all, you have been fantastic this season. Meanwhile our year 7’s have recently played their opening match, in this their first ever basketball match the boys beat Henlow 50-8. The boys have worked very hard in training and can now look forward to their other 2 league games.

The year 6 rugby team have been looking forward to following on from their fantastic success at the Bancrofts Rugby Festival and their recent friendly win against Goldington Middle School. Unfortunately, both the Rushmoor Trophy and the County Contact Festival have been postponed until after Christmas due to the weather conditions we’ll just have to wait a bit longer.

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils have been enjoying the dodgeball club on offer on Monday lunchtime. The club, which is led by an outside coach, has provided a great deal of enjoyment for all who have attended.

Our year 7 boys have also been enjoying a football intra-school football tournament after school. Open to anyone in year 7, the boys enjoy a one and a half hour tournament after school in which they were able to choose their 5-a-side teams and play a number of small-sided matches. Both highly competitive and highly enjoyable, the boys played some good football and en-joyed the evening. It is a new style tournament that we will be

looking to offer other year groups in the future. Our year 5 football team has also been eagerly awaiting their fixture versus Robert Bloomfield. Unfortunately due to the school being shut due to the water shortage this game was postponed. However a congested calendar and

poor weather conditions have meant there has not been a chance to reschedule this fixture before the Christmas holidays. I know the boys have been looking forward to this game, which it is hoped will be played in the not too distant future. Meanwhile our year 7 boys football team can look forward to the next round of the County Cup in the new year.

The netball season is winding down with some fantastic showings from the girls at Arnold. Our year 6 girls played extremely well coming third in their division this year falling just shy of the County finals. They played very well as a team which made for exciting and competitive matches against the other schools. Well done girls, I look forward to more great results next season.

Our year 5 girls have really come together as a team in netball and played extremely well in their first season together. Their best showing was against Alameda where the girls won 10-0 and showed a real team effort. The six of them have become a really strong unit and have even created their own Arnold cheer! Unfortunately the year 8 County finals for netball were delayed due to extreme weather around the region. The rescheduled match should be happening some time in the New Year. During our open evening we had a great group of year 7 & 8 girls and boys who represented the school to a high standard. The year 7’s demonstrated

many games of basketball with little rest during the three hour event; they really showed their commitment to the school and sport at Arnold. The year 8’s were responsible for speaking with parents and pupils as well as taking part in some table tennis demonstrations. Thanks for all your help to everyone who was involved!

Our year 8’s recently enjoyed an evening of indoor athletics at Robert Bloomfield Middle School. It was an opportunity for pupils who have been involved in sport at Arnold for several years to showcase their talents in events such as: the obstacle relay, running, long jump, speed bounce and shot put.
