There’s just a few days left to take part in the Canadian Blood Service’s third annual Bleed and Feed program.
The final blood donor clinic of the holiday season in Maple Ridge is on Friday, Dec. 21, when donations will also be collected on behalf of Friends in Need Food Bank.
The goal of the program to fulfill 14,000 holiday
miracles for B.C. and Yu-kon residents. Bring a non-perishable food item for the local food bank while giving blood.
“It’s a win-win proposition for people who want to help fulfil not one but two mira-cles in their community this holiday season,” said Laura Lansink, executive director, Food Banks B.C.
B.C. residents can book a donation appointment by visiting blood.ca or calling 1-888-236-6283.
“Unfortunately, the need for blood never takes a holi-day and neither does hun-ger,” said Ed Yee, director of donor and clinic Services for the B.C. and Yukon region of Canadian Blood Services.
• The Dec. 21 blood donor clinic takes place from noon to 7 p.m. at Maple Ridge Al-liance Church, 20399 Dewd-ney Trunk Road.

Operation Red Nose volunteers stay up until the wee hours
of the morning driving folks home safely.
Operation Red Nose is a na-tional road safety campaign against impaired driving.
Its main component is a safe ride home service provided by volunteers during the holiday season to any motorist who doesn’t feel fit to drive.
It’s an original way to use one’s own vehicle without get-ting behind the wheel, and the service is free.
Last year, 4,241 volunteers provided 7,716 rides by 12 host groups operating in 23 communities in British Co-lumbia.
In addition to promoting safe driving in a non-judge-mental manner, all donations to Operation Red Nose will go directly to non-profit orga-nizations that support youth and amateur sports in local communities.
Each year in Canada, orga-nizations raise $1.3 million through donations received from the users of the Opera-tion Red Nose service.
Donations are greatly ap-
preciated as this program is the primary fundraiser for the host organization PacificSport Fraser Valley.
Each holiday season, Pacif-icSport coordinates the ORN service in the communities of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford and Mission.
Since 1984, Operation Red Nose has adopted the follow-ing mission: To encourage responsible behaviour with regard to impaired driving in a non-judgemental manner
by enabling communities to provide a confidential chauf-feur service to their members, the financial benefits of which are redistributed to local orga-nizations dedicated to youth.
• The remaining 2012 nights of Operation Red Nose ser-vice are Dec. 21, 22 and 31 – between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.
Call 604-515-6673 to book a ride.
• Find Operation Red Nose on Twitter (@ORNose), or its new website.

The Salvation Army’s Caring Place annual kettle campaign con-
tinues until Monday, Dec. 24 at 14 locations across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
At most locations, kettle campaigners will be out from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
Last year, the local Salvation Army kettle campaign re-ceived $90,000 in donations, which Caring Place staff are hoping to at least match that this year.
In 2010, the campaign col-lected $76,000 in donations, an increase in donations that Darrell Pilgrim, director of the Caring Place, is encour-aged by.
The Caring Place has also launched a new sock and un-derwear drive.
“It’s those personal items that we are always looking for, especially when the cold weather comes on,” said pub-lic relations coordinator for Caring Place, Amelia Norrie, adding that it will always take new underwear and socks because they are handed out year-round.
New socks and underwear can be dropped off at The
Caring Place at the corner of 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway.
The Caring Place is also continuously in need for its Adopt-A-Family and Sonia’s Cradle programs.
Last year, the Caring Place helped 51 families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows throughout the Adopt-A-Family program.
For this holiday season, the Caring Place needs of chil-dren’s rubber boots, gently worn or new clothing for chil-dren, children’s warm jackets, new children’s socks, under-
wear and pajamas, baby for-mula, diapers for newborns, and swaddles, as well as dia-per wipes.
Tim Sarsfield, food services manager at the Caring Place, is looking for healthy snacks and luncheon meat, in par-ticular, for the school bagged lunch program.
He is looking for fruit cups, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola bars, cold cuts, juice boxes and large brown lunch bags.
• Contact Amelia Norrie at 604-463-8296 ext. 106 or email her at [email protected].

For its 27th year, Trans-Link staff are collecting new and unwrapped
toys for its employee-driven “Toys for Tots” campaign.
Just before Christmas Day, the hugely popular Rein-deerBus and Community ReindeerShuttle, with their antlers and bright red noses, will the carry the donations, along with Santa and Mrs. Claus and their jolly elves to the Lower Mainland Christ-mas Bureau.
“Toys for Tots” was started in 1985 by a group of driv-ers with then-B.C. Transit out of the Surrey Transit Centre. They wanted to do something for less-fortunate families at Christmastime.
Since then it has grown, with staff from all depots catching the true meaning of Christmas.
“It’s not just about the eight of us on the buses,” says instructor John Stra-chan. “It’s all of us coming together and seeing faces light up.”
The ReindeerBus and Community ReindeerShut-tle have been doing double-duty, operating in regular service on routes chosen
on a daily basis and visiting locations such as Canuck Place, Ronald McDonald House and Simon Fraser Community Living, spread-ing holiday cheer to people who may need it most. Any-one spotting either bus is always welcome to take pic-tures to spread the holiday cheer on social media sites and enter the Buzzer blog contest.
Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 19, the ReindeerBus and Community Rein-deerShuttle will tour all seven transit depots, plus
the TransLink Lost Prop-erty Office, West Vancou-ver Transit, CMBC head office in Surrey, TransLink headquarters at Metrotown, Transit Police and SeaBus. The entire supply will be de-livered to the Lower Main-land Christmas Bureau on Thursday, Dec. 20.
Since the start of “Toys for Tots”, employees have deliv-ered a total of 55,259 toys.
Last year 2,846 toys and $42,000 in cash and gift cards were donated; gen-erosity that has continued year after year.

The 15th annual Christmas Haven will be serving up turkey and family fun again this year.
Everyone is invited to join in the holiday celebration on Dec. 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the ACT, located at 11944 Haney Place.
Christmas Haven brings people together on Christmas Eve to provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie for people who face hard-ship and a lack of support over the holiday season.
It is a free, non-denominational event that will be wheelchair accessible for people of all ages, ethnicity and socio-economic status.
A free hot turkey dinner catered by the Sal-vation Army will be served during an evening filled with musical entertainment, including a Christmas carol sing-a-long.
Performers will include the Maple Ridge Dance Circle, the Maple Ridge Concert Band and singer/songwriter Rory MacRury.
There will be crafts and colouring for chil-dren and face-painting provided by the Em-erald Pig Theatrical Society.
Finally, Santa Claus will pay a special visit to hand out a present to everyone.
Last year more than 250 people attended the event.
“What we really, really need are cash dona-tions or gifts for adults or teenagers,” Christ-mas Haven media and entertainment co-or-dinator Corisa Bell said recently, adding that they already have enough food and volun-teers.
Both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Recreation Centres will be accepting cash do-
nations on behalf of Christmas Haven, and starting Dec. 1, a drop box for donated gifts will be at the Maple Ridge location.
For the first time transportation will be made available for seniors or people living with disabilities to attend the event.
The Christmas Haven is planning to serve around 300 people this year, but that there will be extras just in case more people attend.
Any leftover food will go back to the Salva-tion Army and toys will be kept for next year’s Christmas Haven, Bell added.
Since the Salvation Army will be providing the food this year, Bell says instead of turkey donations, the Haven is looking for cash do-nations and donations of presents for teenag-ers and adults, who are often overlooked.
Bell suggests gift cards since teens and adults are hard to buy for, but the Haven will accept any donation.
From Dec. 1-31, cash donations will be accepted at both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Leisure Centres, and donation box-es for toys and presents will be located at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and at Curves in Maple Ridge at 22335 Lougheed Highway.
More volunteers will also be needed this year, says Bell.
And the sooner the better because every volunteer needs a criminal record check.
To volunteer• For more information about volunteer-
ing, or to register for transportation, contact Bell at 778-861-9477 or e-mail at [email protected].

Hockey players help food bankTeams in the Ridge Meadows Minor Hock-
ey Association are doing their part to ensure everyone in the area has a merry
Christmas.Recently, two rep teams, the peewee A2 and
bantam A3 Rustlers, stood out front of a local grocery store, selling bags of groceries for $5 each to help fill the shelves at the Pitt Meadows Food Bank.
The players sold 389 bags, raising $1,945.
Every team in the association is now encour-aged to bring a basket to fill with food to one home game before Christmas.
They are also asked to go out on their own and seek support from friends, family, neighbours and businesses to make sure the basket gets filled.
“It’s a great way to finish up hockey for the holi-day break, knowing you helped feed your com-munity, said Kyla MacEwen, in charge of fundrais-ing for the association.

With holiday festivities in full swing, B.C. Ambulance Service and B.C. Children’s Hospital have some
helpful tips to keep your kids safe.• Toys: Choose toys with an appropriate
age recommendation for safety hazards, not only skill level. Small pieces which can eas-ily come off, and small batteries and magnets can cause choking and severe internal inju-ries.
Toys with strings long enough to wrap around a baby or toddler’s neck could stran-gle them. Keep older children’s toys out of the reach of younger kids.
• Electric lights: Strings of Christmas tree lights are hazardous because they are at-tractive to young children who risk being strangled, burned or electrocuted if they get wrapped up in the wires or put lights in their mouths. Use LED lights which may emit less heat energy. Keep all electrical cords out of reach and wind up extra cord lengths.
• Fireplaces: The glass of a gas fireplace heats up to 200 degrees C in just six minutes and takes 45 minutes to cool down. The pilot light of a gas fireplace may also heat the glass enough to cause a burn. Stay close to your child when in a room with a fireplace that is on or has recently been turned off.
A child’s skin is four times thinner than an adult’s and can burn four times faster. Block the fireplace with a hearth gate or screen that bolts into or around your fireplace, or put a safety gate in the doorway to the room with the fireplace.
• Tree decorations and gift wrap: Keep tinsel and small or breakable ornaments high
on a tree and out of a child’s reach. Keep an eye on holiday gift-wrap, including bags, paper, ribbons and bows. These items can strangle, suffocate or choke small children.
• Christmas tree: Place yours a good dis-tance from any heat sources such as fireplac-es, radiators or portable heaters. Cut a few inches off the trunk to expose fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption.
• Candles and matches: Keep lit candles well out of reach and off of tablecloths or anything that a child could pull down or knock over. Many stores now carry battery operated candles. Place lit menorahs on a high surface and not too close to the edge of a table.
• Food: It’s common to see more injuries in emergency rooms as a result of children getting large pieces of nuts, carrots or apples stuck in their airways. Cut foods into small pieces and encourage children to sit while eating. Children are less likely to choke if they chew food thoroughly before swallow-ing. Be aware of hard candies and nuts that may be sitting in a candy dish when visiting another home.
• Visiting friends and family: The homes you visit may not be childproofed. Each year, curious toddlers choke or get poisoned by exploring and getting their hands on items not meant for children. These include pills, vitamins, medicines, cosmetics and cleaning products.
It’s always great to spend time with friends and family during the holidays. If you’re driving, remember to leave early, drive for the current conditions and slow down.
Keep kids safe this holiday

Spend your money this holiday season on family, friends and all the great activities you have planned – not on
electricity. B.C. Hydro shares some simple tips to
help save energy:• Switch to LED holiday lights: LED
lights use 90 per cent less electricity than regular lights, allowing you to light your tree for about a penny a day.
To save even more, put your outdoor lights on a timer.
• Turn down the heat and turn up your savings: Reduce your home heating costs by five per cent by turning down the heat by two degrees.
Use a programmable thermostat to au-tomatically turn the temperature down by five degrees each night for eight hours while you sleep and you could see a 10 per cent reduction on your bill.
• Keep your home cozy by maintaining your heating equipment: Your heating equipment needs regular maintenance to increase energy efficiency and cost effec-tiveness, and to ensure the comfort of your family and holiday guests.
• Stop throwing money out the window: Blinds or drapes provide insulation and prevent heat loss.
Heat loss from windows can account for 10 to 25 per cent of your heating bill.
• Draftproof for a quick and inexpensive fix: Use the extra hands around the house during the holidays to help you draftproof your home by sealing the gaps and cracks
with caulking and weather stripping. This can reduce heat loss by up to 10 per
cent.• Give the gift of Energy Star electron-
ics: While shopping for gifts, consider pur-chasing Energy Star electronics like TVs, DVD players and cordless phones.
They use up to 30 per cent less electricity.• Spin that fan: A ceiling fan can affect
indoor temperature by 10 per cent.
Spinning your ceiling fan in the clock-wise direction produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space.
• Keep chestnuts roasting: Close the damper tightly when the fireplace is not in use to dramatically reduce heat loss.
If you only use the fireplace occasionally, install glass doors. They act as a barrier against warm air loss up in the chimney and stop the pull of cold air into the home.
Save energy this Christmas
Use a programmable thermostat to automatically turn the temperature down by five degrees each night for eight hours while you sleep and you could see a 10 per cent reduction on your bill.

Registration is down at the Christmas Hamper Society this year, which is an early Christmas present for soci-
ety chair Lorraine Bates.“So far our numbers are down, which is a
success story in itself. We’ve done 595 fam-ilies. Last year we were 640. At this point we’re down, which is good,” said Bates.
Still, as little as five years ago the Christ-mas Hamper Society helped only 431 fam-ilies.
The Good Neighbour program has 99 sponsored families this year, down from 112 families last year.
Still, for Bates, any dip in the numbers spells success because it means less need in the community.
Saturday was a big day for the Christmas Hamper Society, with five programs taking place.
Registered families went shopping for their Christmas meals and toy bags worth $75 to $100, which were given to each child in the family.
“Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe” was open, pro-viding new and used articles of clothing and toys for families in need.
The “Kids Only Gift Shoppe” allowed children from registered families to pick out a free gift for their parents or caregiv-ers.
The Firefighters For Families Food Drive
took place outside grocery stores in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
They collected $13,024.65 for the Christ-mas Hamper Society.
And the last West Coast Express Santa Train took place, providing a free ride to Waterfront Station in Vancouver and back with a toy donation for the Christmas Hamper Society.
This year the Santa Train raised $261.70 in cash donations and a total of 742 toys.
Toys and cash are still needed, says Bates, because there are still bills to pay.
“We still have some families registering, but whatever isn’t used goes into our start-up inventory for next year.”
Bates added that the start-up inventory is crucial because a lot of gifts only start coming in on the last week, when most families have already shopped.
Bates says the hamper’s success all starts with amazing volunteers.
“Without volunteers, we wouldn’t have the Christmas Hamper Society.”
And no matter what the numbers are, Bates will always find a way to give anyone in need a Christmas.
“As long as all the families are taken care of on Christmas Eve, that’s our goal. And they always will be.”
Donation boxes at Haney Place and Valley Fair Malls will remain there until Christmas Eve.
People can also donate online at mrpm-christmashamper.org by Paypal or credit card.

The Pitt Meadows Food Bank is asking for donations this holiday season.
The small food bank has been in oper-ations since 2007 and is located at the corner of Ford Road and Harris Road in the Pitt Mead-ows United Church hall. It is only open on Sat-urday mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. serv-ing clients who cannot make the regular hours of the Friends In Need Food Bank, which oper-ates out of Grace Community Church.
Pitt Meadows Food bank coordinator Deb-bie Shepherd says volunteers are looking for warm clothes and items such as socks, gloves and blankets.
They are also asking for toiletries.
And Christmas, items like candy canes, nuts and chocolate are nice donations.
“Something that they never ever get, you know? That would be nice, it would be a treat,” said Shepherd.
She would also like to start collecting fresh produce to give to people.
“Our numbers right now go up a little bit. November, December, January, people need that extra help.”
• Anyone wishing to donate can drop off items at Pitt Meadows United at 12109 Harris Road on Saturday during the food bank’s op-erating hours or call Debbie Shepherd at 604-463-0994 to arrange for a pick up.

Rudolph may no longer have the Right Stuff.
Santa Claus stabled his reliable reindeer last week for a flight aboard a sleek and speedy Helijet air ambulance to visit kids at Royal Columbian Hospital.
This was no languid tourist tour to take in the sights.
“We have about 650 horses on there,” said Helijet president and CEO Danny Sitnam, who was on hand to ensure the chopper’s special passenger arrived swiftly and safely.
“We did a lot of checking it twice actually around that aircraft. The aircraft is running good and Santa said, ‘Let’s go.’”
Upon disembarking and making his way along the gantry to the hospital, the big guy himself couldn’t wipe the grin off his face. Then again, that’s his usual demeanor this time of year.
“It’s different from being in the sleigh, but it’s fun,” said Santa. “It’s nice to let some-body else drive for a change.”
Inside the hospital, navigating the twist-ing halls and crowded elevator to the pedi-atric ward, Santa’s smile was infectious as passing patients and staff stopped to wave, offer a handshake, snap a photo.
“Some of the kids here might not be able to be home for Christmas, so I’m glad to stop by and brighten up their day,” said Santa.
That was certainly the case for Adrian Nicholson-Commanda, who was on his way to surgery to correct an issue with
his feet when he plopped down beside the jolly gent. They shared some jokes, Santa’s elf dug out a toy from his expansive bag of goodies and then the Hope teenager was off to pre-op, his jitters soothed.
That’s just what paramedic Fernando Grossling likes to see.
“Hospital stays can be difficult for chil-dren and events like this can help to bright-en spirits,” he said.
And with that, Santa was off to make his own unique version of rounds.
