Holiday GreetingsChristmas is a time for families and friends to share the best of the season and for

everyone to think about our fellow man and woman and extend the spirit of peace and goodwill. Luckily, we live in a place with a proud history and experience of making the best of everything. The people of Sooke have a tremendous community spirit and resilience.

Sooke is blessed with talented people in the arts, in business and in the community and volunteer sector. Our residents are kind, hardworking people and our entire community of people deserves the best and we will continue to progress in 2015 and build on our efforts in past years.

In my recent mayoral election speech, I said that while our work as a new Council will be difficult at times, with the support of our staff and community, we will embrace the responsibility with confidence. We will rise to the challenge and celebrate our milestones along the way.

Reflecting this Christmas, as both a member of Council and a resident of Sooke, I have been privileged to see firsthand the contribution of organizations, individuals and volunteers who work hard throughout the year to assist others. This has had the effect of filling me with great hope and pride when I have witnessed the contribution they have made. I have been inspired to continue our important work for Sooke; my sincere thanks go out to each and every one of them on behalf of all the community.

Let this Christmas time be about the celebration of who we are as a town, a nation, and as humankind. Together we can enhance the celebration of this season for everyone and look to 2015 with confidence.

May I express the desire that peace and hope will be more than just aspirations at this time of year, but a way of life for the future.

Wishing you all the very best for a Happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful new year.

Thank you.Mayor Maja Tait

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O Come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!Come and behold Him,born the King of Angels.

Refrain:O come, let us adore Him;O come, let us adore Him;O come let us adore Him,

Christ the Lord.2. Sing, choirs of angels,

sing in exultation,O sing, all ye citizens

of heaven above!Glory to God in the highest.

Refrain:3. Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning,

Jesus to Thee be all glory given;Word of the Father now in

 esh appearing.

O Come,All Ye Faithful

Silent night, Holy night, All is calm, all is bright,

Round yon virgin mother and childHoly infant so tender and mild;

Christ the Saviour is born,Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night, Holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight,

Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluya;Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night, Holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light

Radiant beams from Thy Holy face,With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!

SilentNight

The First NoelThe rst Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor Shepherds

In elds as they lay;In elds where they lay

Keeping their sheep on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the East beyond them far,And to the earth it gave great light,

And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same starThree Wise men came from country far;

To seek for a King was their intent,And to follow the Star wherever it went.

This Star drew nigh to the Northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,

And there it did both stop and stay,Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Then entered in those Wise men three,Full reverently upon their knee,

And offered there, in His presence,Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks,Dressed in holiday style.

In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas,Children laughing, people passing,

Meeting smile after smile,And on every street corner you hear:

CHORUS

Silver bells, silver bells,It’s Christmas time in the city. Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,

Soon it will be Christmas day.

City street lights, even stop lights,Blink a bright red and green,

As the shoppers rush home with their treasures. Hear the snow crunch,

See the kids bunch,This is Santa’s big scene,

And above all this bustle you hear:

CHORUS

Silver BellsDo you hear what I hear?

Said the night wind to the little lamb“Do you see what I see?

Way up in the sky, little lambDo you see what I see?

A star, a star, dancing in the nightWith a tail as big as a kite

With a tail as big as a kite.”

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy“Do you hear what I hear?

Ringing through the sky, shepherd boyDo you hear what I hear?

A song, a song high above the treesWith a voice as big as the the sea

With a voice as big as the the sea.”

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king“Do you know what I know?

In your palace warm, mighty kingDo you know what I know?

A Child, a Child shivers in the coldLet us bring him silver and gold

Let us bring him silver and gold.”

Said the king to the people everywhere“Listen to what I say

Pray for peace, people, everywhereListen to what I say

The Child, the Child sleeping in the nightHe will bring us goodness and light

He will bring us goodness and light.” St. Vincent

AngelsWe HaveHeard on

High

Angels we have heard on high,Sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply,Echoing their joyous strains.

Refrain:Gloria in excelsis Deo;Gloria in excelsis Deo.

2. Shepherds, why this jubilee?Why your joyous strains prolong?

What the glad some tidings beThat inspire your heav’nly song?

Refrain:3. Come to Bethlehem and see

Him whose birth the angels sing;Come, adore on bended knee,

Christ the Lord, the newborn King.Refrain:

Frosty the Snowmanwas a jolly happy soul,

With a corn cob pipe and a button noseAnd two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the Snowman is a fairy tale, they say,He was made of snowbut the children know

How he came to life one day.There must have been some magic

In that old silk hat they found,For when they placed it on his head,

He began to dance around.Oh, Frosty the Snowmanwas alive as he could be.

And the children sayhe could laugh and play

Just the same as you and me.

It Came Upon A Midnight ClearIt came upon a midnight clear, That glorious song of old,

From Angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold.“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men

From heaven’s all gracious King!”The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the Angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled;

And still their heavenly music oats, O’er all the weary world;Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on heavenly wing,

And ever o’er its babel-sounds, The blessed Angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long;Beneath the angel-strain have rolled,

Two thousand years of wrong;And man, at war with man, hears not,

The words of peace they bring:- Oh! Listen now, ye men of strife, And hear the Angels sing!

O Prince of Peace, Thou knowest well This weary world below;Thou seest how men climb the way, With painful steps and slow.

Oh! Still the jarring sounds of earth That round the pathway ring,And bid the toilers rest awhile To hear the Angels sing.

Let It SnowLet It Snow

Oh! the weather outside is frightful,But the re is so delightful,

And since we’ve no place to go,Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

It doesn’t show signs of stopping,But I brought some corn for popping,The lights are turn’d way down low,Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

When we nally kiss goodnight,How I’ll hate going out in the storm!

But if you’ll really hold me tight,All the way home, I’ll be warm.

The re is slowly dying,And, my dear, we’re still good-byeing,

But as long as you love me so,Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Hark!The HeraldAngels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the new born King,Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.

Joyful, all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies;With the angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new born King.

Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord,Late in time behold him come, Offspring of a Virgin’s womb,Veiled in esh the Godhead see! Hail, the incarnate Deity!Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new born King.

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness,Light and life to all he brings,

Risen with healing in his wings, Mild he lays his glory by,Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way;Oh what fun it is to ride, In a one-horse open sleigh.Dashing thru the snow, In a one horse open sleigh;

O’er the  elds we go, Laughing all the way;

Bells on bobtail ring, Making spirits bright;What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight!CHORUS

Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way;Oh what fun it is to ride, In a one-horse open sleigh.

A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride;And soon Miss Fannie Bright, Was seated by my side;

The horse was lean and lank; Misfortune seem’d his lot,He got into a drifted bank, And then we got upshot!

CHORUS

Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young,Take the girls tonight, And sing the sleighing song;

Just get a bobtail’d bay, Two forty for his speed,Then hitch him to an open sleigh,

And crack! you’ll take the lead.

I HeardThe Bells On

Christmas DayI heard the bells on Christmas Day

Their old familiar carols play,And wild and sweet the words repeatOf peace on earth, goodwill to men.

I thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled a long th’ unbroken songOf peace on earth, goodwill to men.

And in despair I bowed my head;“There is no peace on earth,” I said,

“For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, goodwill to men.”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, goodwill to men.”

Till, ringing, singing on its way,The world revolv’d from night to day,

A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!

Away in a MangerAway in a manger, no crib for a bed,

The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,

But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes,I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,

And stay by my side until morning is nigh.Be near me, Lord Jesus,

I ask Thee to stay close by me for ever, and love me, I pray: Bless all the dear children in

Thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there.

Jolly old Saint Nicholas,Lean your ear this way!

Don’t you tell a single soulWhat I’m going to say;

Christmas Eve is coming soon;Now, my dear old man,

Whisper what you’ll bring to me,Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,When I’m fast asleep,

Down the chimney broad and black,With your pack you’ll creep;

All the stockings you will findHanging in a row;

Mine will be the shortest one,You’ll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates;Susy wants a sled;

Nellie wants a picture bookYellow, blue and red;

Now I think I’ll leave to youWhat to give the rest;

Choose for me, dear Santa Claus,You will know the best.

Good King Wenceslas looked out,On the feast of Stephen,

When the snow lay’round about,Deep and crisp and even.

Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel,

When a poor man came in sight,Gath’ring winter fuel.

“Hither, page, and stand by me,If you know’st it telling,

Yonder peasant, who is he,Where and what his dwelling?”

“Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the mountain,

Right against the forest fenceBy Saint Agnes’ fountain.”

“Bring me esh and bring me wine, Bring me pine logs hither,

Thou and I will see him dineWhen we bear them thither.”

Page and Monarch, forth they went, Forth they went together

Through the rude winds’ wild lament And the bitter weather.

Good KingWenceslasSleigh bells ring, are you listening,

in the lane, snow is glisteningA beautiful sight,

we're happy tonight,walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,here to stay is a new bird

He sings a love song,as we go along,

walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snow-man,

Then pretend that he is Parson BrownHe'll say: Are you married?

we'll say: No man,But you can do the jobwhen you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,as we dream by the re

To face unafraid,the plans that we've made,

walking in a winter wonderland.

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,in the lane, snow is glistening

A beautiful sight,we're happy tonight,

walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,here to stay is a new bird

He sings a love song,as we go along,

walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snow-man,

and pretend that he's a circus clownWe'll have lots of fun with mister snow-

man,until the alligators knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,Though your nose gets a chilling

We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,walking in a winter wonderland.

Walking in a winter wonderland,walking in a winter wonderland.
