2012 Christmas Carols 5

3470 Highway 16, Smithers • 250-847-4548

Thank youfor another high fl ying year!Have a great Christmas!

O little town of Bethlehem,How still we see thee lie!Above thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go by;Yet in thy dark streets shinethThe everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above,While mortals sleep, the angels keepTheir watch of wond'ring love.O morning stars together,Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King,And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silentlyThe wondrous gift is giv'n!So God imparts to human heartsThe blessings of His heav'n.

No ear may hear His coming,But in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive Him stillThe dear Christ enters in.

Where children pure and happyPray to the blessed Child,Where misery cries out to Thee,Son of the mother mild;Where charity stands watchingAnd faith holds wide the door,The dark night wakes, the glory breaks,And Christmas comes once more.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,Descend to us, we pray;Cast out our sin, and enter in,Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels,The great glad tidings tell;O come to us, abide with us,Our Lord, Emmanuel!

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Wishing you a holiday season

full of love and laughter.

He entered politics in 1918 representing Chislehurst in the British House of Commons for four years. He was knighted in 1919. He passed away at the age of 74 in 1924. Sir Alfred’s family home in Kent, England is now represented by the name Knockholt in use around the Houston area. Lake Kathlyn was named for one of Sir Alfred’s daughters.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in

the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:13-14

Oh the weather outside is frightful But the fire is so delightful And since we’ve no place to go Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn’t show signs of stopping And I’ve bought some corn for popping The lights are turned way down low Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! When we finally kiss goodnight How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight

Good King Wenceslas looked outOn the feast of Stephen,When the snow lay round about,Deep and crisp and even;Brightly shone the moon that night,Though the frost was cruel,When a poor man came in sight,Gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me,If you know it, telling,Yonder peasant, who is he?Where and what his dwelling?""Sire, he lives a good league hence,Underneath the mountain,Right against the forest fence,By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me drink and bring me meat,Bring me pine logs hither,You and I will see him eat,When we bear them thigher."Page and monarch, forth they went,Forth they went together,Through the cold wind's wild lamentAnd the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now,And the wind blows stronger,Fails my heart, I know not how;I can go no longer."

"Mark my footsteps, my good page,Tread now in them boldly,You shall find the winter's rageFreeze thyself less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod,Where the snow lay dented;Heat was in the very sodWhich the saint had printed. Therefore, Christians all be sure,Wealth or rank possessing,You who now will bless the poorShall yourselves find blessing.

Influenza hit the valley late in 1918 with Dr. H.C. Wrinch of Hazelton as the only doctor between Terrace and Vanderhoof. Despite his best efforts the epidemic claimed about a dozen valley residents.

The Smithers Citizens’ Association lobbied Victoria about the sanitation problem in Smithers. The infamous ditches down Main Street could only be solved by amending the Municipal Act to make provision for the incorporation of villages.

The Bulkley Valley District Hospital was run by the Sisters of St. Ann from its opening in 1934 until 1969.

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth!Long lay the world in sin and error pining,Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!O night divine, O night when Christ was born!O night divine, O night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,Here came the wise men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,

In all our trials born to be our Friend; He knows our need, to our weakness is no

stranger. Behold your King, before Him lowly bend!Behold your King, before Him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace;Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother,And in His name all oppression shall cease.Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,Let all within us praise His holy name.Christ is the Lord! O, praise His name forever! His pow'r and glory evermore proclaim! His pow'r and glory evermore proclaim!

O Holy Night!

Oh the weather outside is frightful But the re is so delightful And since we’ve no place to go Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn’t show signs of stopping And I’ve bought some corn for popping The lights are turned way down low Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! When we nally kiss goodnight How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight

All the way home I’ll be warm.

The re is slowly dying And, my dear, we’re still goodbying But as long as you love me so Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Let it Snow

Joseph L. Coyle moved The Interior News to Smithers and journaled the events of the First World War. The war put an abrupt end to rapid growth in Smithers. L.B. Warner took over The Interior News in 1918 and editorialized about the farmers being called to war: “...the labor situation has become so acute that it is absolutely essential that while these men [soldiers] are holding the rst line trench of civilization, we in Smithers and other towns take up their work in the elds...” He then volunteered his entire staff, himself, for the job at hand.

The Smithers Citizens’ Association lobbied Victoria about the sanitation problem in Smithers. The infamous ditches down Main Street could only be solved by amending the Municipal Act to make provision for the incorporation of villages.

ChorusO jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, O what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, O what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.

A day or two ago,I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot, We ran into a drifted bank,And there we got upsot.

Chorus

A day or two ago,

The story I must tell I went out on the snow And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh,He laughed as there I sprawling lay, But quickly drove away.

Chorus

Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight And sing this sleighing song. Just bet a bob-tailed bay, Two-forty as his speed, Hitch him to an open sleighAnd crack! You’ll take the lead.

Chorus

The rst Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in elds as

they lay;In elds where they lay keeping their

sheep,On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

RefrainNoel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east, beyond them far,And to the earth it gave great light,And so it continued both day and night.

Refrain

And by the light of that same starThree wise men came from country far;To seek for a king was their intent,And to follow the star wherever it went.

Refrain

This star drew nigh to the northwest,O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,And there it did both stop and stayRight o'er the place where Jesus lay.

Refrain

Then entered in those wise men threeFull reverently upon their knee,And offered there in his presenceTheir gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Refrain

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heav'nly Lord; That hath made heav'n and earth of

naught,And with His blood mankind hath bought.

The First Noel

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know, Where the treetops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write, May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write, May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white.

Thank you for such a

successful year and

Merry Christmas from all of us.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; Take a look in the ve-and-ten, glistening

once again With candy canes and silver lanes aglow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in ev’ry store, But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that

will be on your own front door.

A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots is the wish of Barney and Ben;

Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk

Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for

school to start again.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the

park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the

carol that you sing right within your heart.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

RefrainGo, tell it on the mountain,Over the hills and ev'rywhere;Go, tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watchingO'er silent ocks by night,Behold, throughout the heavensThere shone a holy light.

Refrain

The shepherds feared and trembled When, lo! Above the earthRang out the angel chorus

That hailed our Saviour's birth.

Refrain

Down in a lowly mangerThe humble Christ was born,And God sent us salvationThat blessed Christmas morn.

Refrain

When I was a seeker, I sought both night and day;I asked the Lord to help me, And He showed me the way.

Go, Tell It on the Mountain

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snowBut the children know,How he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman Was alive as he could be, And the children say He could laugh and play,Just the same as you and me. Thumpety thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go Thumpety thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow.

Frosty the snowman

Knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, "Let’s run And we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away." Down to the village,With a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there All around the square Saying, "Catch me if you can." He led them down the streets of town Right to the traf c cop. And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the snowman Had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye Saying, "Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day." Thumpety thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpety thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow.

There were three possible sites for a divisional point for the railway. Hubert, ten miles east of Telkwa, a location across the river from Telkwa, and seven miles west of Telkwa. Seven miles west seemed the most unlikely but the rm of Aldous and Murray, whose names are borne by streets connecting Railway and Alfred Avenues near the CN Station, was engaged to purchase the necessary land. The year after the acquisition Aldous and Murray had this to say in a promotional brochure for the town: “The selection of the division point was of great importance and was not made lightly. Thorough exploration was rst carried on and complete reports of engineers and traf c men examined. At last an almost level site on the south side of the Bulkley River, 226 miles east of Prince Rupert and 231 miles west of Prince George, in the very heart of the rich Bulkley Valley, was chosen. Some idea of the importance attached to this place by the Railway Company may be gained from the fact that it was named Smithers after its highest of cial, Mr. Alfred Waldron Smithers, Chairman of its Board of Directors.”“The Bulkley Valley is a selection of wonderful natural wealth. It is one of the largest agricultural areas of British Columbia. Vast mineral deposits and valuable forests surround it. Its streams, that have run idly to the sea since the dawn of creation, will supply inexhaustible water-power. They are waiting to do their part in the development that is to come.”“From every standpoint the location of Smithers was a happy one. It combined all the essentials, a wide tributary country with great resources, easily accessible to the railway centre. Its site for town-building and the installation of division point facilities is ideal and there is plenty of room for the expansion of the future city that will be necessary in later years. The railway’s wise choice of its division point shows that its chief consideration was to provide for the development of the country through which it passes and the ready collection and distribution of traf c.”

It Came upon the Midnight ClearIt came upon the midnight clear,That glor'ous song of old,From angels bending near the earthTo touch their harps of gold:"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,From heaven's all gracious King."The world in solemn stillness layTo hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they comeWith peaceful wings unfurled,And still their heav'nly music oatsO'er all the weary world;Above its sad and lowly plainsThey bend on hov'ring wing,And ever o'er its BabelsoundsThe blessed angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strifeThe world has suffered long;Beneath the heav'nly hymn have rolledTwo thousand years of wrong;

And warring humankind bears notThe tidings which they bring;O hush the noise and cease your strifeAnd hear the angels sing!

And ye, beneath life's crushing loadWhose forms are bending low,Who toil along the climbing wayWith painful steps and slow;Look now, for glad and golden hoursCome swiftly on the wing:O rest beside the weary road,And hear the angels sing.

For lo! The days are hast'ning on,By prophets seen of old,When with the evercircling yearsShall come the time foretold,When the new heav'n and earth shall ownThe Prince of Peace their King,And all the world send back the songWhich now the angels sing.

A southern columnist wrote in 1929: “Smithers, away up in Northern B.C., is putting on style. It means to get into the big-time city class along with London, Chicago and Buenos Aires. In the parlance of an earlier day, it is feeling its oats and is about to strut its stuff. The Smithers Board of Trade is changing its name! Henceforth it is to be known as the Chamber of Commerce. So far as I can learn from my Canada Yearbook, Smithers will be the only town in the Dominion boasting a Chamber of Commerce. It may not hold the distinction long, but it will have it for a while anyway. That’s what comes of being progressive, for Smithers has always been that.”

While shepherds watched their ocks by night,

All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down And glory shone around,And glory shone around.

“Fear not,” said he (for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds); “Glad tidings of great joy I bring, To you and all mankind,To you and all mankind."

“To you, in David’s town this day Is born of David’s line, The Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign:And this shall be the sign:"

“The heav'nly Babe you there shall nd To human view displayed All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid,And in a manger laid.”

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song, Addressed their joyful song.

“All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace.Good will to all from highest heav'n Begin and never cease,Begin and never cease!”

Joy to the world! The Lord is come:Let earth receive her King; Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing. Then all the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, you'll go down in history!

Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird, He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown. He’ll say: "Are you married?" We’ll say: "No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town."

Later on we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire,To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown, We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the other kids knock him down. When it snows, ain’t it thrilling,Though your nose gets a chilling, We’ll frolic and play, The Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland, Walking in a winter wonderland, Walking in a winter wonderland.

30 Christmas Carols 2012

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.Away to the window I ew like a ash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowGave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by

name!

“Now Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! On, Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane y,When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.So up to the house-top the coursers they ew,With the sleigh full of toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roofThe prancing and pawing of each little hoof.As I drew in my head, and was turning around,Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and

soot.A bundle of toys he had ung on his back,And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples – how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly,That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,And lled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his nger aside of his nose,And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,And away they all ew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Twas the Night before Christmas

Let Me Come InTwo nights before Christmas I sat on my bed,And more than just sugar plums danced in my head. Our savings depleted; my job quite unstable; My wife wanting clothes and a new kitchen table. The kids were all ghting about who was rstOn Santa's long list. My head nearly burst."Is Santa a fake?" the ten-year-old cried."'Cause I'd hate to think that dear Daddy has lied.""Of course Santa's real," answered mother with glee."When Christmas day comes, just look under the

tree.""Oh, Good!" the kids cried. "'Cause St. Nick at the mallSaid he'd bring not just some of our list ... but all!"My head started pounding; my temples were

throbbing. Then I heard the faint sound of my three-year-old

sobbing."Oh, Daddy, oh, Daddy! How will Santa Claus guessThat me and my doll need the same pink silk dress?"I turned to my wife ... a long pleading look. She put on their jammies, while I found their book.I read them a story, then tucked them in bedWith posters of Mickey and Simba o'erhead. While Mama in her nightshirt and I in my skivviesCollapsed on the bed and turned on the TV.The news was all bad, the economy down. The grimace on my face now distinctly a frown.I shut the thing off and turned out the light. With my wife on the left I rolled to the right.A grunting of sorts was my tender goodnight. Then I screwed shut my eyes to chase cares from

sight. Two minutes? Two hours? I couldn't be sure. When I heard a noise that made my blood stir.I ran to the window, threw open the drape.Well, I saw a sight that made my mouth gape. The moon on the breast of the ve-day old slushMade the yard as appealing as six-day old mush. When what to my dull aching eyes should appearBut a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.Yes, Santa was there, but him I expected. The shock came when all of the rest I detected. The Cratchits, with Scrooge, and young Tiny Tim.King Arthur and Merlin, plus Old Madam Mim.The Whos all from Whoville, the Grinch and ol' Max.Young Dr. Doolittle there with his Yaks. The Muppets there doing their whole Christmas thing. While Alvin and Chipmunks started to sing. And Jack with his beanstalk just starting to grow. The poor little match girl asleep in the snow.Frosty was singing and Rudolph was glowing,The drummer boy drumming. And I had trouble

knowing ...Just what I should do? If I had a choiceI'd go back to bed, but I heard a voice."Let me in," the voice said. What an odd piercing line.I immediately looked for a wolf and three swine. Not the voice of a wolf though, I knew from the start.

But a voice that could best be heard in the heart."Let me in," came again, and the crowd seemed to

hearAnd turned to a manger that lay at the rear.My untidy lawn, how embarrassed was I.That the sod was un nished, I started to cry.But not for the lack of good grass nor from shame,But because that sweet voice had called me by name. The Cratchits, Miss Piggy, the whole motley sceneAll fell to their knees in a manner serene. The girl in the snow awoke from her dreamAnd lit her last match as a lamp for her King.I ventured to walk down the stairs and go out.As I walked through the crowd I started to shout"Oh, help me, please help me. I have bills to pay.My job is in trouble and I've lost my way. We've too many mouths to feed and to dress.I’m just a failure, a wash-out, I guess."I said what I felt. I said it out loud. And I looked for support from the odd-looking crowd.Their faces were lled with contentment, not thought. They had not the depth for the comfort I sought.Nostalgia, some laughs, and some heart-warming

plots,All the magic of childhood ... of this there was lotsIn my friends just behind me. But they don't possessThe power of true love; the power to bless. My friends faded then ... fairy tales all.But the Lord of All Hosts was still at my call.I fell to my knees, folded hands at my chin.I heard the voice say, "Please, let me come in."I awoke in my bed and turned to my wife. Her snoring repose took away all my strife. The day of all days, Christmas Eve came.We sat round the re and called them by name,"On Dasher, On Dancer, On Prancer and Vixen."We sang Jingle bells. The kids got their licks in.The Grinch carved his Beast. Tiny Tim God-Blessed all. Then we looked at the painting I'd hung on the wall.I opened to Luke. We read of His birth. We read of His life, and His works here on earth. We read of our Lord, of our Savior, my friend,Then prayed to the Father and asked that he sendAll the spirit of Christmas; the Spirit of Love; All the blessings be tting us, down from above.Christmas day came, and Santa Claus too.And our own little Whos never cried "boo-hoo."In fact, though their list had been shortened a tadThey whispered together and then asked me, "Dad,Is there someone out there, some girl or some boy,Whom we could help out with a game or a toy?"I did lose my job, then along came a better. And we paid all our bills to the dot and the letter. Our home now abounds not with money, nor fame,But with unfettered love for the Holy of Name.I remember the stress and the fear that has been,But my soul now rejoices, 'cause I let Him in.
