NOTES FROM THE LOFT The Music of Advent

Excerpts from the prophet Isaiah set the theme for the Old

Testament Readings during the Advent season. Last week’s

First Reading portrayed a lost and broken Israel, seeking its

Father, crying for mercy, longing – like Adam – to once again

see the face of God. On this Second Sunday of Advent, the Lord

responds, telling Isaiah, “COMFORT, give comfort to my

PEOPLE!” Tell them to PREPARE for My coming! Fear not! I am

coming to SHEPHERD them!

Handel fans are familiar with his Messiah’s rendition of

“Comfort Ye”. Lesser known might be our missalette’s edition,

COMFORT, COMFORT, O MY PEOPLE #58. The melody,

“Geneva”, dates back to the sixteenth century. Its endurance

over the centuries is a testimony to its timeless appeal. This

composition is the work of the French Renaissance

composer/publisher, Claude Gaudimel (1514-1572) who

became known for his harmonized psalm settings written for the

“Genevan Psalter”. Most of Switzerland had fallen prey to the

errors of Calvinism; Gaudimel as well. It would largely be won

back to the Catholic Faith after Goudimel’s death through the

gentle and tireless efforts of St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622),

Geneva’s most famous bishop.

A YouTube search of Goudimel’s COMFORT, COMFORT

MY PEOPLE yields a variety of renditions, ranging from “tender”

to “rousing”. The latter is more exciting to hear and to perform!

Medieval and Renaissance music was often characterized by

the use of “percussion”, i.e. resonating, metal or wooden

instruments which are shaken or struck by a “beater” – including

the human hand. Percussion instruments include bells, rattles,

dulcimers, glockenspiels, marimbas, xylophones and, of course,

keyboards and drums. Unfortunately, no medieval percussion

scores have survived. Many music scholars contend that drums

were more than “metronomes”; they added “character,

complexity and spice” to composition. (Robert G. Farrell)

The Reading from Isaiah ends with a reference to the coming

of a Divine Shepherd. Handel’s “He Shall Feed His Flock/Come

Unto Me” finds its echo in a simpler, contemporary setting by Fr.

Bob Dufford, SJ: LIKE A SHEPHERD #607. Our Shepherd King

comes to gather and rescue, comfort, heal and pasture. The

First Reading, Psalm, Gospel Acclamation and Gospel send a

consistent message this Second Sunday of Advent: PREPARE

THE WAY! MAKE STRAIGHT HIS PATHS! Choir invites you to

join in the songs. Their lyrics call us to take advantage of next

Saturday’s ADVENT RETREAT.

RESPECT LIFE

The Divine Child’s Birth Advent leads the Church to the Silent Night when God Himself is revealed as one of us. This season leads us to the joy of His birth. If God has joined His nature to ours, how can we ever allow our

nature to be despised? If He has come to bring us Divine Life, and will return to take us to the skies, how can it be all right to throw people in the garbage? May His birth shed protection on all about to be born, and as we work to end abortion, may we "wait in joyful hope for the coming of Our Savior, Jesus Christ." The next Respect Life Holy Hour: Friday, December 22 at 7:00pm.

ADVENT WREATH PRAYER – THE SECOND WEEK “God of power and mercy open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (-William G. Storey)

BEHIND THE SCENES AT ASSUMPTION

It takes many people to see to it that a parish runs smoothly. We focus this week on Anthony “Tony” Quinche, our new Youth Minister:

Hello, my name is

Tony Quinche and I am

honored to say that I am the

new Youth Minister at

Assumption Church. If

anyone would have told

me, ten years ago, that I

would be serving God and

working with children, I

would never have believed them. My life has always

been filled with its ups and downs; I struggled to find

my place within the church. It wasn’t until I had my

personal encounter with Christ that my purpose was

set.

About five years ago I went on a mission to the

Dominican Republic/Haiti and my life was changed

forever. I used to think that my life was perfect. I

thought I had it all. My life was centered around

material possessions and that was good enough for

me. Even though I had, what I thought was everything,

I felt empty inside. I was not truly happy.

During our time in the Dominican Republic, we

would walk through different towns evangelizing and

inviting the community to mass. There was one stop

we made that changed me forever. We stopped at the

home of an elderly couple. They were very poor and

yet were so happy to see and meet us. They offered

us whatever little bit of food and drink they had and I

saw Christ in them. I realized at that moment, as I

witnessed the elderly couple laughing and holding

hands, what was missing in my life, God. They had

nothing and everything at the same time because they

had God in the center of their lives. I knew then that

even though I had “everything” I was poorer than they

were. As we finished our mission, I knew that I wanted

to continue serving God back home. I began working

with the youth of my hometown in Yonkers, NY.

My life has settled down since the mission and

I am following what I believe God has planned for me.

I am lucky and eternally grateful for the love and

support of my wife, Patty, and my three beautiful

children, Riley Hendrix, Tyler Morrison and Charlotte

Marie. I could not do this without their support and

patience.

I am here to serve God and the children of

Assumption Church. I ask for your prayers so that my

love of working with kids never fades, and my fire for

serving Christ never burns out.
