Mountain Resort wanted to celebrate a little differently. It’s not everyday you get to welcome your 10 millionth skier visit to the hill. So instead of the traditional party and one-time event, the resort decided to invite everyone to the party.

“The success of Silver Star lies with our returning customers,” says general manager Michael Sherwood. “We have the best, most dedicated season pass holders a ski hill could ask for.”

This year, Sherwood and his sales team decided to celebrate, they would offer their ‘My1Pass’ for the 2012/13 season.

Now all season passes and day tickets include unlimited access to the Nordic trails, snowshoe trails, Tube Town, and ice skating at the resort’s picturesque Brewer’s Pond.

“Were really excited about this season and we think the ne ‘My1Pass’ will let our dedicated customers really take advantage of what we have to offer,” notes Sherwood.

While the resort is known as a world-class destination for ski and snowboard advocates who swear by its 115 runs and its dry, light snow, it’s true allure comes from what it offers after the lifts have closed.

It’s cross country trail system consistently draws the world’s best to train. Silver Star played host to

a number of Olympic teams prior to the 2010 Vancouver games, including the vaunted Norwegians. With more than 55 kilometers of trails, it’s easy to see why.

Perhaps what has most people excited about the new ‘My1Pass’ is the access to Tube Town Adventure Park and Brewer’s Pond.

“That’s been something that families have been asking for,” comments Sherwood.

Quite often, while families may come up to the hill, they don’t always ski together because of different tastes. If mom and the younger kids are cruising the greens and blues while dad is neck deep in Putnam. Meanwhile the teenagers are probably doing laps in Rockstar Park.

“At the end of the day, families can now reconnect at Brewer’s Pond for a game of shinny or a few laps down Tube Town,” says Sherwood. “It’s a nice way to fi nish off a day.”

Still a kid at heart, Sherwood says he loves playing a game of shinny on the pond then going for a spin down the lanes at Tube Town.

“Truthfully, after a hard day of skiing, I love the ride up Tube Town as much as I do going down,” he laughs. “I’m pretty sure people are going to love the ‘My1Pass’. Silver Star’s always been so much more than just skiing.”

Where the world comes to train It’s always the first to arrive and

the last to leave. But unlike your in-laws, this visitor is a welcome site as winter approaches.

Nordic skiing at Silver Star may not get the headlines like its more popular pastime, but as far as its reputation is concerned, there’s few in North America that can stack up.

With more than 55 kilometres of trails cutting through the pristine woods surrounding the ski resort, Silver Star offers Nordic enthusiasts an opportunity unique within the industry.

It’s got a new name and attitude to reflect the growing needs of its clients.

The Snowsports Adventure Centre takes over for Star Kids at Silver Star, as the necessity to change with the growing demand of adolescents and teenagers is simply a part of society.

Norm Kreutz, Snowsport School director at Silver Star, says it’s more than just a name-change. The idea is to create a fun, exciting experience for the guests that reflects the attitude of the resort.

“We want to move away from the idea that the whole facility is simply a day care. While that’s an important part of what we provide, it’s far from all we do. The needs of the younger kids who come here are much different than the pre-teens and teenagers. So I think the name change helps reflect the wide range of services we offer.”

Kreutz says it can be difficult to convince younger skiers for the need to take lessons when their impression of the ski school doesn’t actually reflect what is being offered. Programs like “Little Rippers,” which

Kreutz says is always loved by students, will have more appeal now that it’s not branded with the services offered for Star Kids.

Unfortunately, sometimes the connotation of a word or phrase can cloud people’s judgement,” notes Kreutz.

He said the Snowsport Adventure Centre wants emphasize that coaching and lessons are geared to meet the needs of the customers, not the other way around. He says one of the changes will be more flexibility in when lessons

can be taken. For a customers p u r c h a s i n g something like a four-week Little Rippers package, the Snowsport Adventure Centre will allow students book at their convenience.

“Lessons don’t have to taken c o n s e c u t i v e l y, ” notes Kreutz.

“Families have busy schedules, we understand that. The important part is that they get the best possible experience for their money.

While there is a name change for kids six and up, Star Kids will still be used for the school’s 18-month to five-year-old programs. Kreutz said parents can expect the same great service they’ve always had. Now they hope kids will be more open to the experience.

The latest attraction at Silver Star might just offer the most bang for the buck.

Tucked underneath FireLight Lodge on the side facing Brewer’s Pond, the newest attraction might turn out to one of its most popular.

Pinheads Bowling Alley is set to make its debut this winter and staff on the hill are excited.

“Bowling is so much fun and there’s already been talk of starting a regular league night,” says the perpetually perky ticket’s manager Nicole McGillivray. “I’m looking forward to kicking a little Tube Town butt.”

Pinheads will feature four, 10-pin lanes as well as have a small restaurant that will offer guests casual dining.

Michael Sherwood, general manager for Silver Star, says the

addition of the bowling alley is the perfect compliment to the resort. He said Pinheads, along with Tube Town, Brewer’s Pond and the Mini Snowmobile track, make the area a must-visit stop while at the resort.

“We are a great family resort and adding something as unique as bowling is just another feather in the cap,” notes Sherwood.

“It’s an easy and affordable activity for the family after a day on the slopes.”

As for the possibility of joining a league and squaring off against McGillivray, Sherwood says he’s looking forward to it.

“I’d say I was going to beat her team so bad that I’d wipe the smile right off her face,” jokes Sherwood. “But if you’ve ever met Nicole, you know there’s no chance that would ever happen.”

Silver Star Mountain Resort and Rockstar Energy Drink have entered into what everyone hopes will be a long and refreshing partnership. Rockstar was already the title sponsor of the Snowcross Course in Silver Woods but this fall a deal was inked giving them naming rights to the 20 acres of jumps, rails, funboxes and spines that make up the terrain park at Silver Star. The resort and it’s hard working Terrain Park Crew were awarded fi fth spot in the “Top 5 Terrain Parks in Western Canada” in this year’s SBC Media Resort Guide “It’s amazing what they pull off without any snowmaking!” said Adam Levine of SBC Media. This past summer the resort moved massive amounts of dirt into the jump lane of the park as an ‘instead of snowmaking’ plan. Ski Dazzle puts best foot forward with new upgrades

Skiers and snowboarders looking for the latest and greatest from Burton to Atomic will be in for a pleasant surprise when they head into Ski Dazzle this season.

Silver Star’s premier ski and snowboard retail shop has undergone a major renovation, opening up the shop to create a more customer-friendly experience.

“We have redesigned both the upper and lower floors to create a more open concept,” said Ski Dazzle retail manager Kyle de Hrussoczy-Wirth. “This has given us a much more spacious feeling and has facilitated a smoother shopping experience.”

With the renovations providing a more enjoyable customer experience, Kyle says Ski Dazzle continues to offer the best products to the consumer. He says the advent of online shopping has forced retailers, regardless of location, to be competitive.

“We make sure we have a great selection of the latest products,

whether its clothing from Spyder to the latest snowboard boots from Burton,” he said.

Perhaps one of it’s greatest strengths is it’s staff. Boot fitting has always been a critical component of improving the ski and snowboard experience. Lead by certified Podiatrist Jodene Vannievwehuyze few retail outlets offer the knowledge and service that Ski Dazzle can.

“We’ve invested close to $15,000 in boot fitting technology this season,” comments Jodene . “There’s no question we are one of the preeminent shops for boot fitting in the province.”

She points out that Ski Dazzle is one of only two stores in the Okanagan with the Fisher Vacuum Fit Station. She says the remodelling, combined with its commitment to customer service, is what makes Ski Dazzle one of the best shops in the interior of the Province
