FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 18, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14 Ahaz receives from Isaiah a prophecy that he will be successful in war and is urged to ask for a sign that the prophecy is true. The sign is “The virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7 Paul greets the Romans by pointing out that Jesus is the Christ who was promised to them in Scripture. He, Paul, is the apostle favored with the task of spreading the name of Christ to all. Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24 In a brief, straightforward, simple narrative, Matthew recounts the events leading to Jesus’ birth. He details the appearance of the angel in a dream to Joseph and stresses that “All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophets.” HERE’S WHAT’S COMING UP THIS WEEK DECEMBER 18TH -25TH

CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE

SAINT AEDAN CHURCH CHRISTMAS EVE

4:00 MASS - TWO LOCATIONS

Because of the traditional overcrowding at the early 4:00 P.M. Christmas Eve Mass in the church, and in order to better serve the needs of our parishioners both young and not so young, we will, once again, be offering two different venues this year. 4:00 PM MASS - CHURCH Adult oriented Mass with Christmas organ music, hymns, readings, prayers and adult homily. 4:00 PM FAMILY MASS - GYM Family/children oriented Mass with Pre-Mass Children’s Pageant (3:40 PM), child-friendly prayers, readings and children’s homily and appropriate Christmas music & hymns. *NO 4:30 CONFESSIONS DUE TO THE 4 PM MASS* ____________________________________________ We will, once again, ask Orangetown P. D. to be on scene to assist our drivers with their arrival and departure. (Live locally? Please consider leaving your car in the driveway and walking. Know someone in the neighborhood? Please ask if you can park in their driveway. Family or friends going to the 4 PM, why not arrange to car pool it? _____________________________________________ 6:00 PM MASS – CHURCH Featuring traditional Christmas organ music and hymns. **10:00 PM – CONCELEBRATED MASS – CHURCH** Featuring 9:40 PM Christmas concert with Parish Schola (choir) and Brass Quartet followed by concelebrated Mass with Parish Schola (choir), organ and Brass Quartet accompaniment throughout the Mass. ** This will be a very special Christmas Eve Mass– try to get to this one if you can.*

CHRISTMAS DAY 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM – 12 NOON (Last Mass) All Christmas Day Masses will feature traditional Christmas music and hymns. O Come Let Us Adore Him, Christ the Lord!

RECONCILIATION MONDAY CONFESSIONS DECEMBER 19TH - 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Saint Aedan, along with every Catholic church in the Archdiocese of New York and the dioceses of Brooklyn and Newark will offer an opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance during our holy season of Advent. Please schedule your day so that you set aside some time to receive this beautiful gift of God’s mercy, forgiveness and saving grace. This is the last confession schedule before Christmas as the Saturday, 4PM masses take place during the regular 4 PM confession time. ____________________________________________

ST. AEDAN’S GIVING TREE

FINAL CALL Please take the ornament you selected from the lobby display, decorate the ornament and then place the unwrapped item under the tree and hang the decorated ornament on the tree. This year, we are in need of a lot of household items. We know it’s often more “fun” to buy toys for children, but please keep in mind what our people really “need.” THANK YOU, IN ADVANCE, FOR YOUR TRADITIONAL SUPPORT. A BLESSED CHRISTMAS TO ALL _______________________________________________ YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO SAINT AEDAN

Your Christmas Gift to Saint Aedan is a very important part of our annual income. Please allow your gift to truly reflect your love of God and of our beautiful parish. Your Christmas Gift may be placed in the collection basket on any Sunday between now and the end of the Christmas season, January 9th (Feast of the Baptism of the Lord). Thank you for your traditional generosity to our parish and may God bless you and your loved ones with a happy and holy Christmas. _____________________________________________ The Pearl River Crèche Committee invites you to attend the 10th Annual Procession of bringing the Infant Jesus in procession to the Manger and placing Him in the crèche located in Braunsdorf Park (next to the police booth) Sunday, December 18th at 1:00 P.M. All children present are invited to be in the procession. Live music and Carols will be sung at the event. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served afterwards. ____________________________________________

THANK YOU FROM THE LADIES GUILD We would like to thank everyone who participated in the gifts for the Retired Religious Sisters of St. Dominic, Sparkill, and the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt and the Sisters of Charity in Nanuet. Thank you for the donations and for all those who wrapped the gifts. Your generosity helps reflect some of the true spirit of Christmas . May you and your families have a Blessed Christmas.

FORMED is an innovative online platform through which parishioners can have access to a wide range of top-quality faith formation resources from Bishop Robert Barron, the Augustine Institute, Father Michael Gaitley, Lighthouse Catholic Media, and several others. It is an effective tool that can support the interest of those wishing to get involved with adult faith formation, sacramental preparation, youth ministry, marriage ministry and more. A number of Spanish-language resources are also available on FORMED, and new materials are being added regularly. With a parish subscription, every parishioner will have free access to a wide variety of video programs, movies, audio talks, electronic books, and downloadable workbooks, at any time and on any device with an internet connection between now and September 2017. To access FORMED simply go to <formed.org> and enter the St. Aedan’s access code: R7NKN8 _____________________________________________

BEST CHRISTMAS SONGS EVER LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!

This week, we’re polling everyone in the parish to vote on what, in our opinion, are the FIVE BEST Christmas songs ever. Please rank them from 5 down to 1 (BEST) and email your response to our parish email address [email protected] I already made my list. (It was hard narrowing it down to just five, there are so many nice ones!) Now it’s your turn. Please email your votes a.s.a.p. so we can share the results in our upcoming bulletin. _____________________________________________

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS DONATIONS THIS WEEKEND!

Our parish food pantry, is once again, collecting grocery donations. THIS weekend, December 17th & 18th, we will be collecting your food donations in support of our annual SVDP Christmas food outreach. Please drop off your food donations in the vestibule of the church upon your arrival at mass. Many thanks for your traditional goodness. Remember, if your family eats it, so do our client families. _____________________________________________

PARISH CHRISTMAS TREE Please bring in a family ornament and hang it on our parish Christmas tree the next time you come to mass. We’ll save your ornaments and, from year to year, we’ll make your ornaments a part of our annual parish family Christmas tree display. _____________________________________________ PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM There will be no PREP classes this week on, Wednesday, December 21ST and Thursday, December 22ND. We wish you and your family a Blessed Christmas.

PARISH CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING

& SOCIAL GATHERING Last Saturday evening, following the 5:30 pm Vigil Mass, we gathered around the Parish Christmas Tree and sang a Christmas Carol. After counting down from 10, the lights on the tree came on and the tree looked spectacular. Many thanks to our Hospitality Committee for providing the cookies, soda bread, hot chocolate and coffee so a large crowd of us could socialize for a while over in the parish hall immediately following the tree lighting. _____________________________________________ 2017 ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK IS OPEN

The Mass book for 2017 is now open. You may come to the Parish House, Monday – Friday (9 AM – noon) & (1 – 5 PM) to have your announced masses celebrated for 2017. Please, no reserving over the phone.

PLEASE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS AND HELP OTHERS

TO RECOGNIZE THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. Wish others a Merry or Blessed Christmas. If

we don’t, who will? Exchange religious Christmas cards and, if

possible try to use religious stamps. Have a crèche or nativity scene under your tree

or in a prominent place nearby. Fully light the Advent wreath/ crown , including

the fifth Christ candle on Christmas day. Explain to your children that the nativity is the

real reason we celebrate Christmas. Have religious Christmas displays both inside

and outside of your homes - Mary, Joseph & Baby Jesus, wise men, shepherds, angels.

_____________________________________________ CHRISTMAS MAGNET SALES

BENEFIT CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE IN HAITI Saint Aedan’s parishioners came out in strength to do their part in “Keeping Christ in Christmas” by taking home lots of those red Christmas magnets. They were also extremely generous in their free will donations which amounted to $1,616.00. One hundred percent of the money will go directly to the children. Thank you and may the blessings of the CHRIST child be upon you and your loved ones this Christmas. _____________________________________________ BIRTHRIGHT BABY BOTTLE FUNDRAISER

All of the volunteers at Birthright would like to thank you for your extremely generous response to this year’s Birthright Baby Bottle Drive. Our parish donated well almost $4,500.00 in support of our mothers and their babies. As we get ever closer to the annual March for Life in Washington DC, on January 27th, let us all continue to pray for the enactment of laws which protect all human life from conception until a natural death. Please remember that the monthly county Pro Life mass takes place on the first Monday evening of each month at 7:30 PM at Saint Francis Church, West Nyack. All are welcome to attend.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
