Cascades, Legend and Tradition

We will visit Santo Domingo de Guzmán also called Huitzapan in Nahuat language, name that translates into “River of Thorns”. Located in the department of Sonsonate, its population is characterized by their Nahuat-speaking natives and its production of traditional pottery. The village breathes peace and serenity and it is there where we find the beautiful cascade of El Escuco, linked to the legend that this place was once a ceremonial centre used by the Pipil community. We will bathe by the foot of the waterfall. Back in the village, we visit a pottery workshop where the master craftsman molds vases, urns, cups and other object s of daily use. Once these objects have been molded, the craftsmen finish the process by wood-stove cooking the pottery. We find in this small village a large concentration of people for whom the native language is the Nahuat, which at one point was the official language of El Salvador, called Cuzcatlan prior to the Spanish colonization and changed to El Salvador later on. The Nahuat language is kept alive by a small minority and is rapidly disappearing.
