Decade ofExcellence

A big thanks to everyone who entered the World Communication Awards in 2008, the tenth year of the industry’s global awards for telecoms service providers. Providers includes people, and this year’s entries feature individuals and teams strongly among the many categories. They include Yazid Chir at Orange Business Services for his inspirational work in mentoring, Steve Jobs as the acclaimed person of the decade, and the eGRAM team at Bharti Airtel, but we should also recognise the customer care teams at Macquarie and Deutsche Telekom for outstanding efforts, as well as all the staff at Safaricom and Turkcell—the latter is consistently impressive in the WCAs. This year’s big operator trophies have been swept by Orange, Belgacom and Etisalat, but as ever the competition was just as close as could be. France Telecom’s global services arm flexed every muscle in its efforts to impress the judges, and succeeded in conveying a determination to work on behalf of customers and people all over the world. Our congratulations to them, and to all the finalists listed in this brochure who made the judging so difficult.

“Outstanding partner

testimonials”

Sponsored by

TurkcellA closely fought contest saw Turkcell, Turkey’s leading GSM operator by subscribers, beat off other entries. In 2005 it launched ‘gnctrkcll’, a brand that stands for young Turkcell, reflecting the fact that young subscribers do not use vowels in their text messages. “Outstanding testimonials from marketing partners show the depth of commercial consumer impact that Turkcell has achieved,” said one judge, while another pointed to its “success in developing the critical youth brand”. Brands take time to build, but Turkcell now claims over 14 million members to gnctrkcll in just three and a half years. “Over the years Turkcell has demonstrated a strong brand image and brand vision,” said one of the panel. “A good focus on the target market with clever use of co-branding and good testimonials,” said another. A strong mix of metrics and customer endorsement was summed up with: “The entry has been done well and demonstrates the ability to leverage the brand for effective business results.”

Bharti AirtelIn just over a decade since its launch, Airtel has built up a base of 65 million subscribers, and it is still growing fast in India and in international markets. “Airtel remains one of the most outstanding brands globally with constant campaigns to drive its message to its consumers,” said one judge. “Leading market position in India is a testament to the strength of the company’s branding,” said another. Some judges called for better tesimonials, but overall they agreed that this is a “powerful brand”.

Winner

HiGHLY COMMenDeD

MobinilAnother strong entry led one judge to say that Egypt’s Mobinil has “captured the hearts of its customers and sustained their loyalty”, adding that “there are lessons for many to learn from the approach and success of Mobinil.” Another said: “They obviously pride themselves on the company and the brand.” The operator’s CSR programme underpins the whole brand (it has a partnership with Unicef), and the panel consistently pointed to Mobinil’s “strong and original social responsibility programme”.

finALisT

etisalatThe Emirates Telecommunications Corporation operates under the Etisalat brand in the UAE, Egypt, Afghanistan and Nigeria. “Etisalat is an extremely well-known brand globally,” said one judge. “International expansion has helped impressive brand development despite a tiny home market,” said another, a point picked up by a third member of the panel: “An entry that shows how the company has understood the importance of international branding in helping growth plans for the operating division.”

finALisT

MTsMobile TeleSystems (MTS) lays claim to being the leading mobile operator in Russia and the CIS with over 89 million subscribers. One judge noted “an impressive entry by the Russian brand into a ranking of the top 100 most powerful brands” in the world. And it had backing from some big names: “Good customer testimony from a company knowing what it means to have a brand name (Coca Cola).” MTS has launched tariffs targeting segments such as students, migrating workers and women.

“Contributes to wider

prosperity”

Bharti Airtel“A very good example of what this award should be for: useful for the community, but also creating a new revenue stream for the carrier,” said one judge of Bharti Airtel’s Farmer Information Dissemination Platform. Others described it as a “well targeted niche application”, “valuable” and “of great use to the rural farming community.” Bharti says 70% of people in India live in rural areas, of which about 65% are involved with agriculture. So it came up with a system to create localised content and deliver it to the relevant consumers on mobile phones. The platform aggregates content from over 38,000 IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertilizer Co-operative Limited) societies and delivers it to consumers who live in the nearby area. “This service stands out because it can so clearly be seen to contribute to wider economic prosperity,” said another judge. “The Indian agricultural sector is huge and important and this service breaks through the problems of distance and poverty to help improve productivity.”

OrangeOrange says its Sport service is the first European television service created specifically for multi-platform broadcasting on TV, Internet and mobile. It was variously described by the judges as “a sophisticated product with great potential”, “very impressive” and an “interesting multi-platform application”. One judge said: “A first here: a multi-platform, targeted TV channel. That’s what TV should be in the future.”

Winner

OmnifoneMusicStation is a subscription-based, unlimited music download service that works on a wide range of mobile phones and that is being rolled out by operators across Europe. “An innovative and groundbreaking service that offers an alternative to pay-as-you-go options and enables mobile phones to challenge the iPod dominance,” said one judge. Others pointed to “good high level testimonies” but a lack of statistics.

finAlist

tata CommunicationsThe Live Darshan service enables people to make a “virtual” visit to religious temples from anywhere in the world, by providing a live video/audio feed accessible by mobile phone, PC or TV. One of the judges scored it highly for “identifying a customer segment which, although obvious, is hardly tapped into yet”, and another for “broadcasting of religious content to everyman in India”.

Peperoni softwareGerman company Peperoni specialises in mobile social networking platforms. Its entry was described by one judge as “a very interactive social networking service”, while another said it is “succeeding in a future growth area”. Peperoni says it provides mobile Web 2.0 solutions to operators including T-Mobile and O2. “Impressive suite of social networking and hosting services,” added another judge.

finAlist

turkcellTurkcell’s hospital reservation service using SMS was described by one judge as a “good practical application of widely available technology”. Another called it “very interesting”. The system has been in use since 2006, and testimonials pointed to savings through reduced management and staff costs. A flexible and reliable service that provides “24/7 customer and technical support” said one doctor.

“A fantastic customer

retention rate”

Sponsored by

Macquarie Telecom“The focus on personal accountability and acceptance of responsibility provides the edge” for Macquarie Telecom among some strong entries, said one of the judges. Another pointed out that “a customer retention rate of 95% is fantastic. A good entry, with good testimonials.” Macquarie, founded in 1992, competes to provide business services with bigger operators in Australia. “Customer service has to be at the core of the proposition for a small player like Macquarie competing in the premier league,” said one judge. “A strong reputation for customer retention against significant odds, mainly because of customer service,” said another. Among other winning factors were the company’s “personal attention” and “no-nonsense programme”.

Deutsche TelekomScored highly due to a “massive and successful investment” in one of Europe’s largest call centres. “A great effort to unify customer services under one roof and take advantage of best practices,” said one judge. “Some good testimonials on how these services have improved the customer perception.” Another pointed to a “real change of culture”. Combining the T-Mobile and T-System helpdesks “is forward looking and it is already generating improvement,” said another. “Joined-up thinking to help the consumer get a better deal.”

Winner

HiGHLY COMMenDeD

BT Global Services“A 90%-plus satisfaction level across a massive customer base is testament to continued high levels of service,” said one judge. One noted that BT produced “a very good entry, with some excellent testimonials from customers and analysts”, while another concluded: “International thinking at last.” In general, the entry “demonstrated the investment and thought given to customer service”, and was described as “bottom-up, process-driven, comprehensive.” But the panel also pointed to a lack of statistics to back up the entry.

finALiST

Cable & Wireless“Great testimonials in support of a very down-to-earth approach to delivering cus-tomer care,” said one of the judges. High-lighting improvements, others described C&W as “a nice turn-around story” and presenting “dramatic improvement fig-ures”. They pointed to “impressive efforts to turn round its customer care” in the past two years and said it “is constantly seeking to raise the bar”. “C&W submit-ted some good testimonials that highlight its improved reputation with customers.”

finALiST

Best Customer Care

roshanAfghanistan’s leading mobile operator Roshan demonstrated “extraordinary devotion to quality service” according to one judge, while another said it was “clearly working hard to provide excellent customer care”. Many pointed to its achievements in the face of “difficult circumstances”. One stand-out factor was its programme to provide walk-in centres to serve customers who would otherwise find it difficult to communicate with the operator using technology.

finALiST

nTT Communications“Customer care is part of the culture and long-term philosophy at NTT Com and not simply an initiative or programme,” said one judge, while another added: “It is clear that customer service is deeply embedded in the culture”. The company was singled out as doing “an excellent job for global corporates”, and it provided very good testimonials. But the judges said some of those testimonials focused more on network reach and quality than on customer service.

“Comprehensive service

portfolio”

Sponsored by

PCCW GlobalManaging infrastructure is a complex, difficult, and often an unpredictable task. PCCW Global proved that it is more than up to that challenge, having provided the judges with “strong references and independent endorsement of its managed service proposi-tion”, as well as “demonstrating double-digit growth, a comprehensive service portfolio and broad geographic coverage”. The judges were impressed by the company’s cus-tomer service philosophy, substantial IT/telecoms experience and expertise, and high-quality project management capabilities. “A lot of great testimonals for a very focused managed service provider,” said one.

Orange Business ServicesOrange’s Business Together with Microsoft is an excellent ex-ample of two industry leaders leveraging their complementary skills and expertise. One judge said the service is “an excellent example of a collaboration between two specialists with some hard revenue expectations for the coming years”. The panel generally agreed that the service helps users to achieve the difficult goal of unified communications. Orange has “made the most progress in offering the UC stack of Microsoft to global customers”, said another judge. Orange says it already serves 150,000 end users with Business Together with Microsoft.

Winner

nTT Communications“The importance of managing security can never be underesti-mated,” said one judge; the panel agreed that NTT Com’s Global Security Operation Services represent a “truly comprehensive service to tackle global security concerns”. “This shows com-prehensive commercial thinking from NTT Com,” said another judge, “providing the customer with protection against leakage of information inside the organisation, not just hacking or oth-er attacks. The entry shows good examples of where this had worked extremely effectively for the buyer.”

Best Managed Service

VirtelaVirtela provides managed services as a hybrid virtual network operator, giving multinational customers the benefits of an asset-based carrier while combining the flexibility of the VNO model. “Virtela has made a big impact in global managed ser-vices this year. It has focus and commitment,” said one judge. Another was impressed by the company’s customer testimoni-als, and “clear demonstrations of success,” but others said the model could prove difficult to sustain.

FinALiST

easynetEasynet posted a strong entry with its managed network service. Its IP-based network solution supporting data, voice, telepres-ence solutions and video is now delivered to 600 international corporate customers with sites in at least three countries. The judges said Easynet’s entry had “some great testimonials for a service that seeks to offer a one-stop shop wherever a customer happens to be based”. As another judge put it, Easynet offers a “service that works, is successful, benefits customers and is evolving”, but others looked for greater differentiators.

“This operator is continuously

innovating”

Sponsored by

OrangeOrange is one of the world’s largest mobile operators, with a mobile footprint that includes Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean. It scooped the winner in this category because, as one judge said, “Orange has been consistently growing revenue and subscribers; entering new markets and achieving number one or number two positions and introducing innovative services.” Another judge remarked that Orange is “not resting on its previous successes; the operator is continuously innovating, be it in the corporate arena (converging solutions), the consumer space (iPhone) or even purely on innovation (NFC, WiMAX).” Overall, the judges agreed that “Orange stands out because of its scale and continued innovation.”

TelstraTelstra is Australia’s leading telecoms and information services company, with one of the best-known brands in the country. The company’s flagship 3GSM 850MHz mobile network, known as Next G, was described by one of the judges as a “deep and feature-rich network in Australia”. The Telstra entry demonstrated “some nice examples of innovative services on this platform,” another judge said. “Next G is a real differentiator and is providing data services across the country in areas where it normally would not be available,” said another.

Winner

HiGHLY COMMenDeD

SK TelecomSK Telecom was South Korea’s first mobile service provider, and is now moving into the US, through its Helio service, and China, through a strategic alliance with China Unicom. SK Telecom is the “performance and innovation leader in South Korea”, said one judge. Another noted that “SKT continues to play a leading role in bringing new products and services to market.” Other judges cited the company’s “innovative services” and the fact that it is often “ahead of the pack with new network developments”. SK Telecom has certainly set “an interesting example for the rest of the world to watch”.

Best Mobile Operator

MTSMobile TeleSystems (MTS) is the largest mobile operator in Russia, one of the world’s most competitive and fastest-growing markets. The judges applauded MTS for its performance “across an enormous geographic region and in dozens of different languages”. The company has been doing an excellent job of growing revenues from voice and data services, and became the first Russian mobile operator to roll out a pan-regional 3G network this year. One judge summed it up by saying: “MTS is solid as a rock and the brand of choice for Russians.”

“Outstanding mobile

O2O2’s Bluebook is a free service that enables customers to store data—texts, picture messages, contacts—from their mobile phone. It has been available since 2006 but was relaunched this year. “An improved version of an outstanding mobile service,” said one judge. “Fixed ISPs don’t offer this level of user content security, even in managed email.” Another described it as a “really well targeted product serving an obvious need”. Bluebook uses NewBay’s LifeCache solution to provide network-initiated message backup, blogging features, personalisation tools and integration with the O2 portal address book. Contacts are backed up using SynchML technology. “People always have good intentions about backing up data, but too often risk it, only to regret it later,” concluded another judge. “O2 has recognised this and gives users peace of mind as well as hassle free back-up.”

Bharti AirtelBharti’s mChek service is a mobile payment system for financial transactions, money transfers, bill payment and mobile top-ups. One judge said it is “an important product in places where there is limited fixed access to the Internet. Looks like a great product for India.” According to the operator, mChek on Airtel receives over 40,000 hits and over 12,000 requests for registrations every day. And it claims more than 220,000 transacting customers. “Very good take-up figures for a short period of time,” commented one judge.

3UK3’s launch of a mobile Skypephone brought voice over IP calls into the domain of mobile users. “The Skypephone could change the mobile landscape,” said one judge, while another said it is “certainly unique, and has seen relatively rapid take-up”. 3 says it is seeing well over 100,000 minutes of Skype calls being made across its network on a daily basis “The first mobile operator to really embrace a mobile VoIP-like service with a fully integrated offering, and teaming up with one of the best-known names in the VoIP industry,” said another judge.

turkcellIstePosta is a service launched with Google to provide Turkish companies with a Web site presence and fixed and mobile email services. One judge described it as a “simple alternative to Microsoft Outlook. “High on innovation”

Sponsored by

SafaricomSafaricom, formed in 1997, now lays claim to being Kenya’s leading mobile operator with over 11 million subscribers. Among its recent innovations is the M-Pesa mobile payment solution, aimed at customers without a bank account, that enables simple financial transactions including person-to-person money transfer. It is also the first mobile operator to build a 3G network in Kenya. “High on innovation, high on providing rural communities with access to telecoms,” was how one judge described the operator. Another said: “This is a tough category with many really strong submissions from telcos operating in tough environments. In that context, Safaricom’s M-Pesa product is a leader, really well suited for an under-banked, under-developed market.” Safaricom is now 40% owned by Vodafone, and that could serve it well for future expansion. “The company has gained a strong private, international partner in the form of Vodafone and this should help it spread its wings further in the coming years,” said one judge.

RoshanSince it was founded in 2003, mobile operator Roshan has put its corporate social responsibility programme at the heart of its business in Afghanistan. “Roshan is an excellent example of a carrier that understands and addresses its market’s needs, and goes beyond that to meet its country’s needs,” said one judge. The panel pointed out that among its considerable CSR achievements are programmes to employ women and funding for schools and medical facilities. “Roshan always impresses with its business performance and promotion of laudible social goals,” said one judge. Roshan has 2 million subscribers, covering 56% of the population.

Viettel Corporation“True progress in a genuine developing market,” was how one judge described Vietnam mobile operator Viettel. Since launching in October 2004, Viettel has built up a base of 20 million subscribers, some 50% of the market and around a quarter of the country’s population. Indeed, the panel pointed to the fact that the operator has helped to drive up telecoms penetration, becoming “one of the critical enablers of rapid growth in Vietnam”. “Ultimately a good demonstration of how a new entrant can take market share by offering attractive prices and introducing innovative services that meet local requirements,” said one judge.

iBurst South AfricaWireless broadband Internet service provider iBurst has a simple aim: to provide affordable broadband to a larger proportion of the South African population and to make services available in areas where there is limited or no fixed-line infrastructure. It is the only broadband operator in some townships. “A very good example of the right technology and approach for local market conditions,” said one judge. iBurst has launched a 40 MB package priced at R49 per month (about E4), and government-funded organisations such as schools receive discounted services. “An innovative service solving a real problem in an emerging market,” one judge said.

“A very good and worthy

project”

Bharti AirtelBharti Airtel partnered with the Government of Gujarat in the eGRAM Connectivity Infrastructure Project to provide telecoms services to rural villages. The VSAT-based solution, completed in just six months, provides last mile connectivity to link 13,716 village Panchayats (local government bodies) and Common Service Centres located in the remotest corners of the state. It opens up video, voice and data services in areas such as agriculture, e-governance, health and education. This combination of factors made it the stand-out project for several judges. “The Airtel project has additional di-mensions: political oversight, high public profile and expectations of contributing to the digital divide,” said one. “To complete within timetable and budget on a project such as this is an achievement indeed.” Another described it as “a very good and worthy project.” Bharti says village people helped with the rollout, and the government is in the process of giving an expansion order for another 4,300 sites.

Alcatel-LucentAlcatel-Lucent is migrating Telstra’s voice and broadband access networks to an IP-based infrastructure, while providing a con-solidated service assurance solution, as part of a five-year pro-gramme begun in 2005. “The geography of Australia has made this project an even greater achievement,” said one judge. Another described it as “an impressive project”. The second phase of the project is now in progress, with the ultimate aim of providing customers across Australia with next-generation com-munications and entertainment services.

easynetThe aim of the Low Emission Zone project devised by Transport for London was to improve air quality and to lower pollution risk in the city. Easynet delivered a fully managed MPLS network, providing IP connectivity to Low Emission Zone number plate recognition cameras across London and the Home Counties, connecting them to a fully resilient core network. “Excellent re-sults from an important environmental project,” said one judge. Easynet used its unbundled network to deliver the managed IP services, described by one judge as “a tricky project.”

ComverseComverse migrated 35 million subscrib-ers of Russian operator MTS from nine different systems and four different ven-dors across nine sites—all in the space of just 27 days. “Well that is what I call a project!,” said one judge. The aim was to harmonise IN platforms using Comverse’s Real-Time Billing Solution. “Harmonising existing IT infrastructure, in this case pre-pay systems, is an enormous technical challenge, in this case executed extreme-ly well,” said another judge.

teO ABBaltic Data Center (BDC), owned by TEO AB, is undertaking one of the largest out-sourcing projects in the Baltic States: the implementation of new IT infrastructure for the DnB Nord Banking Group. One judge described it as a “well executed mission critical data centre project”, although still in progress. Five different banking sys-tems in six countries are being replaced with one core system that includes a sin-gle data centre. “A critical and high-profile project,” said another judge.

Orange Business servicesOrange deployed a messaging, Web ser-vices, data centre and fixed and voice infrastructure for Numonyx in just a few months. The infrastructure now connects approximately 7,000 employees across some 20 sites, with major locations in China, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and the US. “Launching Ex-change email services over the weekend without a glitch is a pretty impressive testament to the initial success of this project,” said one judge.

VNLThe judges hailed VNL’s WorldGSM solar-powered base station as an “outstanding” development and a “big breakthrough”. VNL says its system enables operators to build a sustainable business model to provide voice and SMS services to remote rural villages where ARPUs are less than $5 a month. The system is being trialled by opera-tors in India and has caught the attention of the GSMA development fund. “Bringing mobility to rural areas using a green technology is to be saluted,” said the judges.

“Excellent customer

Belgacom International Carrier ServicesMore than 10 years ago incumbent operator Belgacom created a carrier and wholesale business unit with the goal of serving national and international operators. Now its International Carrier Services (ICS) business provides voice, data and value added services to over 500 wireless and fixed operators and service providers. “The wholesale and carrier markets have long been a strong focus for Belgacom, which is reflected in this submission,” said one judge. Belgacom ICS has shown consistent growth in difficult wholesale market conditions. “Innovative services; good stats and growth figures; excellent testimonials,” said another judge. Indeed several pointed to “great customer testimonials”. In recent years it has established a joint-venture agreement with Swisscom and put greater emphasis on mobile and IP services. Others on the panel noted a “well executed” joint venture with Swisscom and a “strong financial performance”.

BT WholesaleBT says it now provides wholesale services to more than 1,000 customers in over 170 countries worldwide, including many of the biggest global operators. “This company is making serious efforts to expand its services area outside of traditional wholesale services and into managed services and outsourcing,” said one judge. Underpinning BT’s strategy is its 21CN global, software-driven network that introduces a new portfolio of next-generation services. “Such a professional and refreshing approach to wholesale,” said another judge.

Tata CommunicationsBringing together the former operations of VSNL, Teleglobe and Cipris, Tata Communications boasts considerable international network infrastructure including strong IP and submarine cable assets. One judge said the group “presents the first new serious threat to existing global wholesalers worldwide”. Another pointed to a “global footprint with formidable strength in India”. Tata continues to strengthen its managed service and data centre offerings. “Strong in the IP access space which is the key wholesale market,” said one of the panel.

TeliaSonera IC has 43,000 route kilometres of optical fibre, majoring on global IP transit, and says it has more than 1,000 service provider/operator customers. Customer retention was 97% in 2007, according to the company. One judge pointed to “good growth” and an “innovative approach to segmentation”.

“Good global credentials”

Sponsored by

Orange Business ServicesOrange Business Services presented an array of impressive statistics and proof points to illustrate its global reach, extensive IP network infrastructure and level of market penetration worldwide, as well as describing accomplishments in emerging markets. One judge said: “In a step-by-step way, Orange Business Services demonstrated how they actually achieved their successes to date. Accomplishments were supported by facts and figures presented along with strong testimonials and case examples. Furthermore, they shared their plans for growth in a clear, concise and measurable manner.” Another judge said: “Impressive service expansions by Orange Business Services into new markets deserves recognition, such as Russia where it is building a whole new network and where it has won its own access codes.” Among the winning aspects that helped capture votes from the judges were its “explicit focus on enterprises” and “good global credentials”. In addition, “clear evidence of how they were able to leverage their core competencies to outpace the market level of growth for ICT was striking.”

BT Global ServicesIlustrating that this was a close contest, one judge summed up BT Global Services as: “An excellent entry: very good testimonials; impressive statistics (revenue growth outside the UK and in the enterprise sector); customer satisfaction ratings; evolving services to meet market needs.” The judges pointed to the division as a “growth motor of BT”, achieving “an increased global footprint and greater emphasis on providing services”. That was achieved through “carefully considered acquisitions and mergers, in line with its strategy for gaining core competencies in IT networked services.” They also highlighted: “outstanding testimonials”, “a hugely global customer base, high satisfaction scores and very strong client comments”. But leaving room for improvement, the judges noted: “Recently some loss of financial momentum.”

HiGHLY COMMenDeD

AT&TAT&T’s list of services and products was described as “colossal” by one judge: “The scale and scope of its global MPLS-based services was well documented and is indeed impressive.” Another commented: “A very comprehensive entry showing good revenue growth, network investment and enhanced reach across the globe; and some excellent customer testimonials.” In fact the company’s scale was singled out by many: “AT&T has unrivalled global scale and innovation in their submission. Particularly well-balanced geographically.” But the judges also noted room for improvement: “The vast product portfolio needed to be condensed to either the truly global offerings or to be connected together to show how these are to be leveraged for strategic advantage globally.” Another said: “I would have liked more customer satisfaction information.”

nTT Communications“Very good testimonials and plenty of information on network coverage and enhancements as well as service evolution and innovation,” said one judge. Another judge said: “Formidable strength in Asia places NTT close to the front of the global super league.” The company’s growing international presence was highlighted: “NTT Com proved its global credentials by providing an impressive and detailed list of European testimonials from non-Japanese multinationals. The programmes in place to achieve the highest standards of service continuity, consistently, across boundaries are ambitious, yet these are backed up by investment, clear strategic direction and leadership. Despite a strong entry overall, some judges concluded that NTT Communications “is not mentioned with sufficient volume” by end user organisations in Europe.

“Comprehensive high-quality services”

Sponsored by

EtisalatEtisalat has grown from its small home market in the United Arab Emirates to a commanding position in the Middle East and Africa region. The judges applauded the group’s service quality and recognised the exceptional growth driven by rapid market share gains in the region’s larger economies like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. One judge pointed to “comprehensive high-quality services”, while another said it was exactly the kind of example they were looking for “of an aspiring telecoms operator with international ambitions”. A compound revenue growth of 29% per annum since 2005 places Etisalat amongst the world’s fastest growing network operators. The judges said it is fitting that the most technologically advanced operator in the Middle East is gaining due recognition on the international stage.

Belgacom ICSBelgacom International Carrier Services has made considerable progress in a short period of time, with its initial focus on emerging markets and establishing its first physical presence outside of Europe as recently as 2001. Successful global expansion has enhanced the company’s growth and helped it to diversify away from the competitive carrier wholesale market. The judges were impressed by the excellent and very detailed customer testimonials, and one judge singled out its “formidable global presence” in spite of a small home market.

“A thorough approach to CSR issues”

Sponsored by

BT GroupCorporate Social Responsibility features heavily in BT’s programmes, and judges liked the fact that not only are measurable environmental objectives set at the Group but also that they are delivered on. One judge described its strategy as “a broad, thorough and international approach to environmental and CSR issues.” Since 1996, BT has reduced its UK carbon footprint by 58% and it retains a stretch target of 80% reduction by 2020. BT’s initiatives are not just about numbers, and the judges applauded the company’s aspirations to create the best working environment for its employees and its commitment to a wide range of charitable initiatives. “An excellent entry with plenty of statistics and supporting information,” said one.

TelstraOnce the detail gets down to waterless urinals you know that a company is taking green initiatives seriously. The adoption of a formal company-wide CSR programme in 2003 gave a major impetus to Telstra’s efforts. “Telstra displays strong leadership in the CSR and environmental areas,” commented one judge, while another said: “An excellent entry with plenty of information and statistics.”

TeliaSonera intl. CarrierThe judges were impressed overall by a clear presentation of green credentials by TeliaSonera International Carrier. Between 2001 and 2007, the operator reduced its carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden by over 70%. His vision was that centralised IT infrastructure would provide security, flexibility and cost-effectiveness to enterprises. Chir is also president and founder of Nos Quartiers Ont des Talents (NQT), an organisation dedicated to helping people from disadvantaged areas of Paris to find work suited to their skills. “A motivating account of vision and leadership in action,” one judge said of the project. “Proof that latent talent needs opportunity, belief and perseverance to flourish.” Since it started in 2005, NQT Association has helped 2,000 young college graduates and gathered 500 sponsors (volunteer managers to coach candidates). In 2007, NQT enabled 330 recruitments in five months, and the concept has now been adopted nationally. “A true changemaker not just in telecoms and technology markets, but who has also made use of his knowledge and abilities to help socially disadvantaged people to gain skills in the industry,” said another judge.

Gourav Srivastava / Ayaz SiddiquiThe highly commended spot went to two content and applications managers from Tata Communications: the Live Darshan (Blessings) team of Gourav Srivastava and Ayaz Siddiqui. The judges used words such as “innovative” and “challenging” to describe the project, in which Srivastava and Siddiqui drove the development and installation of live and fully integrated video streams from six of the most important religious sites in India. “Very impressive project management,” said one, while another praised them for “looking at customer segmentation in a new way”.
