PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

For me Thanksgiving was a time to reflect on the important things in my life and to give thanks for the friends and family around me. I had to spend some time in the hospital during this time and spent a few weeks in recovery. I found so many good friends and family around me to help and support me. I am grateful and thankful for each and everyone one of them. I would like to thank Lou Bono and the SWS Board for handling the November member-ship meeting while I was out.

Looking forward, December brings the SWS Holiday Party with lots of fellowship and cheer. I’m excit-ed that we are returning to the original “Painting Swap”. I would like to thank Teta Smith for hosting the party and Connie Koval for heading up party organizing. Connie has done such a good job, please give her your thanks. Jonesy McConnell will greet the party goers with new and classic hu-mor.

The SWS Board initiated at the November meeting a new overhead projection system for the visiting artist demos. This new overhead camera is clearer, more stable, brighter and more true colors than our previous hand held camera and is projected on two large screens, instead of the one screen. This new system allows us to keep the heavy overhead mirror in storage until need. We believe this was a success at the November meeting and we will continue for future membership meetings.

The SWS Board also initiated at the November meeting a new “Painting of the Month” system which we believe gives our beginner and intermediate artist a better opportunity to compete and show their work with confidence. We believe this was a success at the November meeting, and we will continue for future membership meetings. The details are in the Scene and on the website.

The SWS Board is excited about both improvements. We continue to be committed to the SWS membership, systems / operational improvements and to positive growth in all areas.

Past SWS President Walt Davis is heading up “Greet and Introduce Visitors” at the membership meetings. Walt proposed this as an effort to create a more welcoming and friendly environment for our guest. Thank you, Walt, well done. Lets all jump in and greet our guest.

Keep painting and never stop!

ELINA KAY GREGORY-GOODRUM Spotlight on Artist of the Month

I was born in Houston, Texas but spent my growing years in Shawnee, Oklahoma. As a child I was always doing some kind of art and that continued through high school where I participated in art shows and competitions. At my high school reunion my former art teacher was still alive and actually saved a piece of my work- back then it was fashion illustration and he gave it to me…a very special experience.

Some of my major painting influences have come from Native American history and archaeology. My father was an amateur archaeologist and I usually went him to explore the areas where Native Americans had lived previously. There I was fascinated by all the interesting rocks, land patterns, and how both weather and time had left their mark.

I attended the University of Oklahoma and received my BFA in Art Education. I received training in painting, printmaking, sculp-ture, and art history. The degree led to a job here in Dallas teaching Elementary Art at Stonewall Jackson. I also taught Sum-mer School at Hockaday. I decided to further my education and received my MFA from the University of North Texas. The late Rob Erdle, an excellent watercolorist, was one of my advisors. The Master’s degree work was demanding in that you were ex-pected to explore your ideas in depth. I began using collage with watercolor to make relationships between land patterns, rock formations, and Native American mythology more meaningful. Combining collage pieces, both transparent and opaque helped create illusions of color depth. I discovered that collage pieces could add a tactile quality. The Primordial Series contained characteristics of the metamorphosis of forms and shapes. This body of work for the Masters led to a one person exhibition at University of North Texas.

After completing my MFA I was employed by Richland College as an adjunct Professor of Art where I continued to teach Paint-ing, Watercolor, and Art Appreciation for 28 years. I also enjoyed teaching Watercolor at Collin College for 7 years. I have had the privilege of helping many good artists.

Honors include being selected as Outstanding Adjunct Professor for Humanities, Richland College, Texas Art Education Asso-ciation, State Convention Presenter,Who’s Who in American Art, Signature Member of Southwestern Watercolor Society.Signature Member of National Watercolor Society, Signature Member of Watercolor USA.

Wherever you are in your path to watercolor you are never too old to learn.
