A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians, (4:21-5 : 1) Your blessings Father

Brothers and sisters, Tell me, you who desire to be subject to the law, will you notlisten to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman andthe other by a free woman. One, the child of the slave, was born according to the flesh;the other, the child of the free woman, was born through the promise. Now this is anallegory: these women are two covenants. One woman, in fact, is Hagar, from MountSinai, bearing children for slavery. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and correspondsto the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the other womancorresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother. For it iswritten, “Rejoice, you childless one, you who bear no children, burst into song andshout, you who endure no birth pangs; for the children of the desolate woman are morenumerous than the children of the one who is married.” Now you, my friends, arechildren of the promise, like Isaac. But just as at that time the child who was bornaccording to the flesh persecuted the child who was born according to the Spirit, so itis now also. But what does the scripture say? “Drive out the slave and her child; for thechild of the slave will not share the inheritance with the child of the free woman.” Sothen, friends, we are children, not of the slave but of the free woman. For freedomChrist has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke ofslavery. Praise be to God always.

Gospel (Luke 1:57-66)

Now the time came for Elizabeth to gibirth, and she bore a son. Her neighboand relatives heard that the Lord hadshown his great mercy to her, and theyrejoiced with her. On the eighth day thcame to circumcise the child, and they

were going to name him Zechariah afthis father. But his mother said, “No; heis to be called John.” They said to her,“None of your relatives has this name. Then they began motioning to his fathto find out what name he wanted to gihim. He asked for a writing tablet andwrote, “His name is John.” And all ofthem were amazed. Immediately hismouth was opened and his tonguefreed, and he began to speak, praisingGod. Fear came over all their neighborand all these things were talked aboutthroughout the entire hill country ofJudea. All who heard them ponderedthem and said, “What then will this chbecome?” For, indeed, the hand of theLord was with him. This is the truth.Peace be with you.
