PFC CALI 511C Thank you to Wrangler Charolais for purchasingour heifer calf in the National Sale
PFC CHIEF 502C Sample of our bulls selling March 26th in the
Alameda Bull Sale
By the timeyou read this, the fall femalesales will bewrapped up and
with the interest and enthusiasm inthe Charolais industry I am sure wewill look back at a very successful fallseason. The attendance at the fallshows and early sales in EasternCanada was very good with strongdemand for the genetics on offer. Thenumbers at the National Show atAgribition in Regina were way up andit was a great event showcasingCanadian Charolais proudly. Thelarger crowds and enthusiasm in thebarn made for an historic event withthe sale averaging right next to$10,000 with solid interest from acrossthe country. Charolais also did verywell in the interbreed competitionswhich culminated with a Charolaisfemale being named champion in theBeef Supreme Challenge.
Next year our National CharolaisShow will be held in conjunction withthe Royal Agricultural Winter Fair inToronto. There is already somediscussion amongst breeders to take
some cattle from Western Canada toparticipate in the event. With a goodcontingent of breeders and cattleusually attending Agribition fromOntario, it would be nice to see thisreciprocated and also have some fromQuebec and the Maritimes be there, totruly make it a National event.
From November 8th to 16th,Candace and I had the privilege oftouring 33 Norwegian farmers aroundAlberta. It is always enjoyable to showyour country off and to see it throughthe eyes of your International guestsand the questions they ask. Fromranch tour, to feedlot, to auctionmarket, to western movie set therewas lots to see and do including a dayat the large Agri-Trade equipmentshow in Red Deer and a couple ofdays at Farmfair International inEdmonton, including a night at theCFR rodeo.
2016 will be an exciting time in theCharolais business in Canada with theinterest in bull sales already starting. The move is on to more crossbreedingand we are situated very well tocapitalize and help many commercialproducers improve their bottom lines
with Charcross calves. The premiumpaid for the identifiable Charolaiscalves was huge this fall with $100 to$200 a calf more being paid. Tell ourstory and help make the cow-calfproducer more profitable.
Bull sale season is just around thecorner and Craig and I are alreadyworking on our picturing schedulesfor the many ads and catalogues forthe sales that will be happening. Ihope that your bull pen is lookinggood and that you will feed andpromote them to their fullestpotential. We are poised for a greatbull selling season, but you still needto work on staying in touch with pastcustomers and getting the bestpictures for the promotion of them tomaximize your returns.
If you have any questions, or ifCraig Scott or I can be of anyassistance, please don’t hesitate todrop us a line. Wishing each andevery one of you a very MerryChristmas and a Prosperous CharolaisNew Year.
Until next time,Helge

Well as the fallshow season hascome to an end andmost of the sales havewrapped up, it seems
like a good opportunity to look back onthe past year and look ahead to next year.
Most recently on behalf of the NationalBoard I would like to thank WilgenbuschCharolais, Rosso Charolais, PleasantDawn Charolais & Eaton Charolais,Hunter Charolais, and Horseshoe ECharolais for donating semen for theCCYA Semen auction at Agribition thisyear. I would also like to thank Langstaff Charolais, Scott JohnstonCharolais, Char Maine Ranching,Phillips Farms, and Charmill Ranchingfor purchasing these semen packs.Support from both the buyers anddonators is greatly appreciated.
Also looking back at the sales we wantto remind any juniors that purchased aCharolais heifer this fall to make sure totake advantage of the buy and showprogram. Also keep in mind that you willhave the opportunity to get semen for thefemale purchased or one of your other
females through the genetics programthat will open in the New Year. Hopefullyany of the juniors that got semen throughthe genetics program last spring aregetting excited to see the results of thisprogram when their cows calve.
The end of this show season meanslooking ahead to the next one and for methe first one I have on my list is theCCYA Conference that will be held inOlds, Alberta, July, 2016. The rest of theAlberta board and I are very excited to behosting the conference and having a greattime as usual. We have some excitingevents and opportunities planned thatare sure to make it a great time. If youhave any questions about the conferencenow or in the future feel free to contactany Alberta board member or I and wewould gladly help you out.
If I don’t see any of you again this fall,I want to wish you all a Merry Christmasand a Happy New Year and look forwardto seeing everyone again in the spring at bull sales as well as at the conferencein July.

HERD HEALTH
Most calf scourdocuments focuson treatment of calf scoursand methods
involved to eliminate an outbreak. In this article preventative measureswill be discussed highlightingmanagement procedures, which havebeen proven to substantially reduceall scours. Nothing is foolproof but ifcertain measures are followedincidence can be drastically reduced.
There are certain managementprocedures you want to avoid as theymarkedly increase the possibility of ascour outbreak. FOSTERING of calvesis a common procedure with twinsbut purchasing calves for this purposecan be a recipe for disaster. If youabsolutely must purchase a calf do sofrom a BEEF herd, which has a goodmanagement system, and is scoursvaccinated. Keep the pair isolated in aseparate area for two weeks. The beststrategy is NOT to purchase calves forfostering; the risk is not worth it.
The same thing applies topurchasing cow calf pairs or heavilypregnant cows just prior to thecalving season. Two scenarios canresult. Either their calves may startscouring from the cows not beingexposed to organisms on your farm. The opposite can also happen: yourown calves scouring from not beingexposed in the past to the organismsthe new cows have brought in. This iswhere maintaining a closed herd atleast close to calving is a very verygood idea. The key is preventing thefirst case. Once it happens, theorganism is quickly seeded out in theenvironment and if crowding ispresent, all in contact calves becomeat risk. So even if you purchasepurebred heifers, make sure they areon the same management system asyour herd.
Herds with a high percentage offirst calf heifers (>20 %) run a greaterrisk of scours for several reasons.Heifer’s colostrums are never as charged
with as many immunoglobulinsagainst the scours organisms.Mothering with heifers is a bit harderand with more difficult births heifer’scalves are generally more stressed.Always have several litres of goodfrozen colostrum on hand. Someproducers will drench most first calfheifer’s calves with colostrum tosupplement the heifer’s owncolostrum. At least give colostrum toany stressed, slow to rise calves.Drenching with colostrum may taketime now but it could have hugebenefits later in the calf’s life. Try ifpossible to calve heifers separate fromcows. It makes them easier to watchand if any scours do start, it can bemaintained. Heifers mother up a lotbetter in a smaller group. Check thesuckle reflex on newborns calves bysticking a couple of fingers in thecalf’s mouth. If it is a weak sucklereflex after being born 20 minutes, give the calf colostrum.
Scour vaccination should bemandatory in most circumstances andthe ones on the market are all prettygood I believe. Especially in first calfheifers, if there is past history of scoursor in herds where crowding is an issue. We find all herds once they reach 100cows can greatly reduce their scoursproblems by vaccinating. Thishowever is not a panacea for sloppymanagement. Any calf no matter howwell protected can succumb to scoursif exposure is too great. Make sure andgive the scours vaccine at the ideal timebefore calving that is recommended.
The calving area must have beencleaned of manure the year before andpreferably not have cows in it morethan 30 days prior to calving. Themanure allows a buildup of theundesirable organisms and this isexacerbated in the spring thaw whenmelting snow washes through themanure packs. Organisms are thusconcentrated in the water pools. Have the calving area as well drainedas possible.
An isolation area must be planned
for so any sick calves and theirmothers can be immediately removedfrom the group and kept there untilno more diarrhea is evident. Alwaystreat the sick calves last after thecalving herd has been checked. It isimperative to change your coverallsand dip your boots before going backto the main herd. A product calledVirkon is an excellent disinfectantagainst bacteria and viruses and canbe mixed in a boot dip. Farmers canbe the biggest cause of spreadingscours around the farm so be verycognizant of this fact. Esophagealfeeders have also been incriminated. Ihave most large producers have aseparate feeder for giving colostrumand treating scouring calves withelectrolytes. Also disinfect in betweenusages with the virkon disinfectant.
Nutritionally you must keep cowsin a condition score of 2.5 to 3.5 atcalving. This insures good colostrumand strong cows for quick deliveries. With exercise in the winter cows willbe in better shape to calve quickly.
One study compared calf sheltersand wind breaks to barns to nothingat all. Not surprisingly, the calfshelters and wind breaks caused thegreatest reduction in neonatal disease.Even though barns may seem the bestthe higher ambient temperatureallows proliferation of the organisms. The calves are usually quite confinedas well. There is no doubt a barn for obstetrical procedures etc havetheir purpose but calf shelters give astress free environment especially in a snowstorm.
Most scours outbreaks occur frommanagement breakdown and thenallowing the first case to spread. Byfollowing most of the managementprocedures listed above calf scourscan be kept to an absolute minimum.
Have a great Christmas and HappyNew Year with a trouble free calvingseason to all of those in the Charolaisassociation in 2016.

INDUSTRY NEWS
I would like torecognize theefforts of the
exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors, staffand guests in making the 2015 showseason an incredible success. Thecombined efforts at countless showsacross Canada demonstrates why weare recognized for our world classgenetics. By all accounts, cattle entrieswere up over last year, there weremore international visitors than therehave been in several years, and thecattle looked terrific.
As we look forward to 2016 and webegin strategizing for next year, Iencourage you to look at adoptingnew technologies into your operation. This may be a new farm managementsoftware program, an updated pieceof machinery, or look at incorporatingnew science based genetic selectionmethods. The cattle market has seenseveral of its best years in decades as
of late and now is a good time toinvest in moving your farm operationinto the future. In an increasingglobally competitive landscape suchas the beef cattle industry, it isimportant to be efficient and utilize allavailable technologies. If you wait tosee how it works out for yourneighbour or someone from anotherbreed, it may be too late. As a highcost producer, we can compete, butwe will have the greatest chance ofsuccess by utilizing and embracingthe tools available to us in Canada.
The inaugural Canadian BeefIndustry Conference (CBIC) will beheld in Calgary from August 9-12,2016. This event is geared towardproducers as there will be sessionsthat are directly relevant to your farmoperations. It will also be anopportunity to become engaged withindustry organizations and networkwith other breeders, commercial
cattlemen, international guests, researchers and government officials.More information on the conferencewill be available over the course of thecoming months on the websitewww.canadianbeefindustryconference.com. Consider this your invitation toattend and I look forward to seeingyou there.
The CBBC will continue to work onbehalf of purebred producers todevelop markets for Canadiangenetics. We will also work closelywith industry and government toensure that the unique perspective ofpurebred breeders is heard. Also, wewill continue to work closely withbreed associations to create value foryour memberships through accessingfunds for new and existing programsas well as other initiatives. As always,if you have any questions feel free tocontact the CBBC office
