SINGING SONGS OF SUPPORT

You will all remember the girls from De Ferrers School in Burton-on-Trent who brought their sign-singing choir to DEAFvibe café earlier in the year.

They have used their passion for music and sign language in combination to raise funds for DEAFvibe by holding a fundraising event for DEAFvibe.

Naomi, Gareth and Rowena attended the school in November to collect a cheque for £350 raised by the school.

DEAFvibe would like to express their gratitude for the generosity of the school. It is wonderful to see a group of young people learning sign language and using it to bring songs to life.

IMPORTANT CAFÉ NEWS – UPDATE ON CHANGES TO CAFÉ IN NEW YEAR

From Saturday 17th January, the time of the café will be changing. Rather than having a separate café for Hard of Hearing and BSL users, the café will be combined. The new time for the café will

be 11am – 3pm. It will still be on the second Saturday of the month, with full communication support being provided.

The speakers will be booked from 12pm to 2pm, giving you an hour either side for socialising and

for receiving support / advice from DEAFvibe where needed.

We hope this new format will bring advantages to those that attend the café. We will still be providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for café members.

We welcome your feedback to the café either in person or via email at [email protected]. It is

YOUR café and it is important you let us know what you want from it.

DEAFVIBE ATTENDS SIGNATURE AWARDS

DEAFvibe was thrilled to be nominated for Outstanding Organisational Achievement at the Signature awards in the Bloomsbury Ballroom, London in November. Ali, Rowan and Rowena

attended the ceremony to represent DEAFvibe. DEAFvibe did not win this time but were excited to get so far as a small organisation. Competition was fierce and the Joseph Maitland Robinson Award for Outstanding Contribution went to Dr Margaret Du Feu who has devoted most of her

adult life to improving the life of deaf people who have mental health issues.

RAC AND AA – BREAKDOWN SUPPORT FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE Both the RAC and AA provide a mobile phone number for deaf and hard of hearing customers to report breakdowns via SMS. This service may not be provided by other breakdown services, such as those arranged via your insurance company. If you are a member of either company, make sure you have the contact details so that you can text in an emergency.

SEASONS’ GREETINGS TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS DEAFvibe would like to wish everyone all the best for Christmas and the New Year. We thank each and every one of you for all of your support in 2013 and look forward to working with you in 2014.
