ALEXANDER DINSLEY, 14 STUDENT, NEWCASTLE

I won’t lie, I think a lot of what I’m listening to is pretty generic. I like Iggy Azalea, I think she’s pretty cool. Then again, I do listen to

quite a bit of classical music, too.

ROB MCCARR, 60, RETIRED LIL MCCARR, 59, MEDICAL ASSISTANT, NEWCASTLE

Lil: “We listen to a lot of Smooth Radio, so a lot of tunes from the 70s and 80s.” Rob: “I like my Northern Soul

too; the classic soul singers. I tend to listen to a lot of those records.”

RICH HODGSON, 25, ASSISTANT MANAGER, NEWCASTLE

I listen to a lot of tunes for work. Tonight we’ve got a chart bingo night as part of a big run of events, so I am listening to the

tunes from that – it’s a lot of chart stuff but there’s things like Michael Jackson’s Thriller in there too.

TODAY I’M LISTENING TO...

HEN PARTYCoop Chicken House is celebrating its first birthday on January 11 and everyone’s invited.

Coop is all about simple food done well; its tables heaving with chicken fresh from the wood-fired grill and sides including grilled corn, BBQ beans, sweet potato fries, and ‘slaw. Add to that a pint from the excellent Wylam Brewery and away you go. In the meantime, the lunchtime menu is on offer noon-5pm Monday-Friday and the takeaway menu is available until 9pm.Coop Chicken House, Collingwood Street www.coopchicken.co.uk

WANT TO BUILD A SNOWMAN?Disney smash-hit Frozen is bound to be the soundtrack to many families’ Christmas this year, and thanks to Seven Stories everyone can enjoy a special sing-a-long screening of the animated family adventure.

Whether you’re dreaming of saving the world like Princess Anna or you love the cuddly reindeer Sven, the event offers a chance for all the family to sing and dance along. Build an Olaf-shaped snowman - no matter what the weather - and join in with Frozen-themed face painting before the film. Just try to resist singing along to Let It Go, you’ll be belting it out with the rest of them in no time!Seven Stories, December 28-January 4 (except Dec 31, Jan 1), £5 plus admission fee www.sevenstories.org.uk

CHEERS!Two iconic Newcastle pubs are getting major facelifts and new names. The Earl of Pitt Street, formerly The Greyhound, will keep its traditional exterior while the interior will be based on “Vivienne Westwood meets Alfred Hitchcock”, which sounds interesting. Meanwhile, the Vic & Comet, which featured in the iconic film Get Carter and later became ONeill’s, becomes The Victoria Comet and is dedicated to real ales and proper pub food. The Earl of Pitt Street, Pitt Street www.facebook.com/theearlofpittstreetThe Victoria Comet, Neville Street www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk

Tyneside Cinema’s new Gallery space continues to provide food for thought in its programming of insightful installations.

In the new exhibition White Hole, John Smith epitomises the spirit of experimentation and imagination. Smith’s new work documents the artist’s memories of Eastern Europe and questions idealised imaginings of life in other places and subverts the perceived boundaries between documentary and fiction. BANKING ON LAUGHSIt’s too easy at this time of excess to forget the real meaning of Christmas, but thanks to The Stand you can enjoy great comedy and help others.

With nearly 5,000 people accessing the city’s food banks monthly, a charity evening at The Stand aims to provide laughs in return for food, with a star line-up on offer in return for a bag (or more) of shopping featuring Jason Cook, Carl Hutchinson and Hardeep Singh Kohli (pictured). A list of urgently needed food items is on The Stand’s website. The Stand, January 6, 50p plus a bag of shopping, www.thestand.co.uk

I’VE EATEN

JANET PERIGO, 53, TEACHING ASSISTANT, LEEDS

My husband and I ate at the Slug and Lettuce on the Quayside last night and enjoyed it. I had the fish and

chips; while it’s simple food it’s done well.

TIM NICHOLSON, 66, BRIDGE ENGINEER, HIGH WYCOMBE

We’ve come up here for a couple of days and we’ve eaten at a few places; we loved Carluccio’s. We’ve eaten at the one in

London too, the food and drink at the one here is equally as good.

MICHAEL CHADKIRK, 41 HEALTHCARE WORKER WHITLEY BAY

My wife and I recently ate at Za Za Bazaar in the Gate. We liked the selection that was on offer but I thought the best parts were some

of the burgers, and all the desserts were fabulous.

MEET THEM ON THE CORNERAffectionately known as Lindisfarne Mk3, the latest incarnation of the revered Tyneside band will play a series of gigs at the City Hall in December.

Ray Jackson’s Lindisfarne comprises six former members of the band, including Dave Hull-Denholm, Paul Thompson, Charlie Harcourt, Steve Daggett and Ian Thompson. Famous for their iconic folk rock sound, the band will play hits including Lady Eleanor, All Fall Down, Fog On The Tyne, Meet Me On The Corner and many more and these shows will please fans new and old. City Hall, December 20, 22, 23, from £22.50 www.newcastlecityhall.org

SPOOK NIGHTAs the winter nights draw in and the weather howls at the window, there’s nothing like a scary story to set the wintry mood and test the nerves.

The hallowed halls of Newcastle’s independent library, The Lit & Phil, will play host to an evening of supernatural tales told by cultural historian Gail-Nina Anderson, poet Sean O’Brien and award-winning novelist Lesley Glaister.

The Grade II listed building is the perfect location for a chilling night in; just watch out for what lurks behind those old bookshelves. Prepare to be severely spooked! The Lit & Phil, January 6, £5, www.litandphil.org.uk

BEST BRIDESThe North East Wedding Show returns in January, with leading bridal coach Michele Paradise set to share her invaluable advice on everything from feeling calm and confident on your wedding day to walking in fabulous shoes.

The 80-strong exhibitor list includes Debenhams, Moss Bros, Seaham Hall, Accent Original Bridal House, and The Designer Cake Company. Pop Idol finalist Aaron Bayley and his band will entertain visitors throughout the weekend. Metro Radio Arena, January 24-25 www.theukweddingshows.co.uk

CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONEIf you haven’t chosen the location for your big Christmas celebration, The Cluny has just the ticket; its festive event featuring The Great Curve and Behold A Pale Horse. Melodic indie rockers The Great Curve (pictured) bring their epic, infectious and anthemic sound, while Behold A Pale Horse’s psychedelic Krautrock-influenced rock will please fans of Radiohead and CAN. The first 100 people in get a free four-track CD featuring two songs by each band, and organisers promise more surprises on the night. The Cluny, December 21, £5, www.thecluny.com

LAUGHING HYENANewcastle’s longest-established comedy club has a trio of superb live performances over the festive period. Gravel-voiced comic David Hadingham will showcase his inimitable facial contortions and handmade gags alongside the acerbic wit of John Ryan and the self-deprecating comedy musician Kate Lucas (pictured). On New Year’s Eve, Jason Cook is joined by Glaswegian comic Larry Dean and a soon to be announced special guest. Hyena Comedy Club, December 19, 20 and 31 £15, www.thehyena.com

IT IS A WONDERFUL LIFE!There’s nothing like a festive film at Christmas, and if you’ve exhausted your DVD collection the Tyneside Cinema is on hand with several cinematic treats. Along with the usual Christmas favourites like It’s A Wonderful Life, complete with live musical accompaniment; there’s quintessential Christmas film Home Alone; The Muppet Christmas Carol, the finest version of A Christmas Carol ever made (in our opinion); and Yippee-kay-ay! Bruce Willis is back in Die Hard.Tyneside Cinema, December 19-24 www.tynesidecinema.co.uk

BEAT THE SLUMPThe limbo between Christmas and New Year is generally filled with gluttonous guilt and credit card woes, so rejoice that The Stand comedy club is on hand with an alternative to the festive slump.

Five top-notch comedians will provide chuckles aplenty, with an extra special party planned on New Year’s Eve. Ubiquitous Northern comic Gavin Webster (pictured) will be joined by Tyneside funny man Mike Milligan, Lee Ridley - aka Lost Voice Guy - the speechless comedian who performs using software from an iPad - and up and coming stand-up Katherine Tanney. Keep smiling…it’ll soon be next Christmas. The Stand Comedy Club, December 27-31, £15 (except December 31, £25), www.thestand.co.uk

WRITERS UN-BLOCKEDIt’s said that everyone’s got a good book in them, but it’s playwriting skills that Live Theatre is hoping to develop in its next Writers Group course, beginning in January.

The Live Writers Group from January 14-March 18 supports and develops budding writers who are passionate about theatre, helping them through the process of writing a one-act play. The select group of emerging playwrights will be guided through the process of plotting, writing and developing their play by celebrated playwrights and theatre makers. Each participant will also receive a 30-minute one-to-one session after they’ve received their feedback report to help writers work on the next step.Live Theatre, January 14-March 18, £120 www.live.org.uk

THIS IS 2015!

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2015

2015 is going to be action packed from the moment Big Ben chimes in the New Year.

Rugby will hold the city in its thrall - kicking off with the Rugby League Magic Weekend in May, followed by the Rugby World Cup in October, both events to be played at St James’ Park. I’m sure there is a joke about odd shaped balls in there somewhere…

NE1’s regular events will fill up the rest of the calendar. NE1’s Restaurant Week kicks off proceedings in January (19 – 25), and again in August. August will be a busy month, with powerboats returning to the Tyne in NE1’s Zapcat Grand Prix - expect the same amount of thrills and spills as we had in 2014.

NE1’s big screen returns to Grey’s Monument for NE1’s Monument Movies in July for more free film screenings.

Elsewhere in the city, great changes continue apace with a major revamp for intu Eldon Square’s Sidgate as construction begins on creating 20 new restaurants and eateries.

Beyond that, planning is well underway on many new food and drink venues but alas, details are at this time, top secret. One thing’s for sure, 2015 is going to be a good one.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT 2014 IN THE TOON

January The New Year brought with it the seventh NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week, with more than 25,000 vouchers redeemed. February Chinese New Year brought parades, parties, fireworks and the odd dragon to Toon. March The first Newcastle Comic Con saw thousands of people dressed as everything from Daleks to Batman descend on the city, and Jamie’s Italian moved into Monument Mall. April Choreographer Matthew Bourne brought his amazing all-male interpretation of Swan Lake to Newcastle, and boyband McBusted rocked the city. May NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week took place May 9-16, with more than 60 events including a launch party at Bonbar, a catwalk event with Company magazine, another incredible Northumbria University catwalk event at Baltic, local designers taking centre stage at Tiger Tiger, and VIP guests Julien Macdonald and Sophie Ellis Bextor. June We welcomed summer with the return of NE1’s Quayside Seaside for a fourth year, and Vamos! Festival returned. July The second NE1’s Newcastle Cocktail Week took place July

14-20, with more than 40 venues involved. Newcastle Pride took over the city, with the Town Moor stage sponsored by NE1 and a second stage in Times Square. August NE1’s Monument Movies attracted big crowds to the foot of Grey’s Monument. NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week returned for the eighth time; more than 20,000 people redeemed vouchers. NE1’s Newcastle City Marina had a visit from a superyacht, NE1 brought ping pong to the streets, and more than 25,000 people watched NE1’s Zapcat Grand Prix powerboat racing on the Tyne. September The Great North Run saw its one millionth competitor cross the finish line and celebrated the occasion with an Opening Ceremony on the Quayside. OctoberThe first NE1’s Newcastle Music Week took place across the city – with big names joining local musicians and Jamal Edwards, and the RSC popped up too. NovemberWe celebrated four years of Alive After Five, which has brought an extra 7.9m people to the city and £350m to city centre business; while Kylie, Nicole Scherzinger, and Lady Gaga popped in. DecemberMichael Buble, Kasabian and the longest panto run in the UK. It’s a great end to the year!

FREE AT LASTIt’s rare to get something for nothing these days, but up-and-coming rockers Orchard Hill prove the exception to the rule as they embark on a free-ticket tour across the UK.

ROCK ROYALTYUnquestionably one of the most loved and respected bands in British rock history, Brian May and Roger Taylor bring the latest incarnation of Queen to the Metro Radio Arena in January.

Having recruited their new frontman from American Idol, Adam Lambert is proving to be a hit with his skilful vocals and stylish live performances. With critics hailing the newly rejuvenated band a monumental success, the quality of the songwriting and majesty of their performance always shines, and thanks to ramped up production for the new tour, we are promised a visual and aural feast. Metro Radio Arena January 13, £69, www.metroradioarena.co.uk

WELSH ROCKVeterans of the British hardcore scene that spawned a resurgence in the popularity of home-grown rock, Welsh rockers Funeral For A Friend are heading to Toon.

Poised to release their seventh full-length album, Chapter And Verse, on the same day as playing Newcastle’s Riverside, the album sees FFAF in spectacular form, fusing their gruff attitude with melodic choruses. Live, the band are a raw and focused bundle of energy, guaranteed to pack a visceral punch.Riverside, January 19, £18.50 www.riversidenewcastle.co.uk

RIGHT MEDICINESwedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg (AKA First Aid Kit) found fame with their harmony-drenched cover of Fleet Foxes’ Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, which went viral on YouTube in 2008.

Since then, the folk duo have achieved high critical acclaim for their lush country-tinged melodies and folky influences. Having collected many awards including four Swedish Grammis, their latest album, Stay Gold, has been met with critical acclaim and the girls’ image is set to appear as part of a limited edition set of Swedish postage stamps in January, not long before their highly anticipated gig at the City Hall. The unwrapping of an Egyptian mummyYear: 1830 The opening of a sarcophagus at the Lit and Phil in 1930 was a huge coup. Three surgeons opened the well-preserved sycamore case and it took two hours to unwind the cloth protecting the body, which was “in a remarkably perfect state”

The Cross House fireYear: 1919 Flammable celluloid film stored in the premises of The Famous Laskey Film Services caught fire and spread from the basement of Cross House on the corner of Westgate Road and Fenkle Street. Eleven people died, several jumped and others were rescued by firemen.

The fair on the frozen TyneYear: 1814 Between January 15 and February 6, a stretch at the mouth of the Ouseburn became layered with ice 10ins thick, attracting huge crowds who ventured on to the surface and started skating, playing football and riding horses and carriages across.

Earl Grey heads southYear: 1941 A lightning strike on July 25 hit Grey’s Monument with such force that it blasted Earl Grey’s head off. It is reported that the head ended up displayed in the window of a ladies’ outfitters in Grainger Street where it landed, alongside a sign saying ‘Earl Grey Shops Here’.

The execution of Jane Jameson Year: 1829 Her hanging attracted a crowd of 20,000 to the Town Moor gallows. Jane Jameson had murdered her mother Margaret by stabbing her in the heart with a red-hot poker. Her spirit is reputed to haunt the Quayside around the John Wesley Memorial.

The flying donkey of the Castle Keep Year: 1733 A showman drew a huge crowd to the Castle Keep, claiming he was about to fly from the top. He strapped his wings to a donkey for a test flight. It survived, its fall having been broken by landing on an onlooker who died as a result.
