TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph
Luke 1:26-‐56; Matthew 1:18-‐24 People had been waiting a long time for Jesus. God hinted at His coming in the garden of Eden when He promised a seed to conquer the serpent. (Gen. 3:15) The prophets told of His coming hundreds of years before His birth. God was working out His plan to reconcile people to Himself.
In the Bible, God often used angels to communicate His message to people. Angels spoke to Abraham in Genesis 18. The Angel of the Lord spoke to Balaam in Numbers 22. Now Mary and Joseph, the earthly parents of Jesus, each received a special visit from an angel to announce the birth of God’s promised Messiah.
The angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary surprised her. God chose Mary to be the mother of His child. The angel’s message revealed much about this promised child.
First, He would be great in both being and nature. He would be the Son of the Most High. Jesus is the Son of God, and the Lord God promised to give Him the throne of His father David. These words fulfilled the prophecy given to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-‐16. He would reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom would have no end.
The news that Jesus was coming into the world was good news because of why He was coming. An angel revealed Jesus’ purpose to Joseph in Matthew 1:21, “He will save His people from their sins.” The gospel is the good news of what God has done for us through Christ.
The announcement of Jesus’ birth is not the beginning of the gospel; God had been planning for this moment since before the beginning of time. (See Eph. 1:3-‐10.) Help the kids you teach understand that God’s plan has always been to save sinners and bring them back to Himself. Jesus, whose name means “Yahweh saves,” is the center of that plan.

THE BIBLE STORY
Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph
Luke 1:26-‐56; Matthew 1:18-‐24 One day God sent an angel named Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth. The angel went to visit a young virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to Joseph, a descendant of King David.
The angel said to Mary, “Rejoice! You have found favor with God. He is with you.” Mary was very afraid and puzzled. Why would God find favor with her? She had done nothing special.
The angel told Mary not to be afraid. He told Mary that she was going to have a very special and unique baby, and they would call the baby Jesus, which means “the Lord saves.” The angel explained that the baby would be great—He would be God’s Son! He would even be a king— the King God had promised would come.
Mary asked the angel, “How can that happen? I am not married yet.”
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come, and a miracle will happen. The baby will be God’s Son.”
The angel Gabriel told Mary, “Nothing will be impossible with God!” He told Mary that her relative Elizabeth was pregnant, even though she was old and did not have any children.
Mary replied, “I belong to God. May everything happen just as you said.” Then the angel left her.
Mary hurried to her relative Elizabeth’s house. When she arrived, the baby inside Elizabeth leaped for joy! The Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and she said, “What an honor, Mary! Your baby will be blessed too!”
Mary was so happy. She praised God with a song about how great God is. Mary knew every family in the future would say she was blessed because God was going to do great things for her through Jesus. God was keeping His promise to bless the whole world through Jesus.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months. Then she went home.
Now Joseph found out Mary was going to have a baby, but Joseph knew it was not his baby—

Mary and Joseph were not married yet!
Joseph decided to break his engagement with Mary so she would not be publicly disgraced.
Soon after Joseph thought these things, an angel appeared to him in a dream.
“Joseph!” the angel said. “Don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the baby she is carrying was put there by the Holy Spirit. Mary is going to have a son; name Him Jesus because He is going to save His people from their sins!”
This happened just like the prophet said it would: “See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel,” which is translated “God with us.”
When Joseph woke up, he did exactly as the angel commanded. He married Mary, and when she had a son, Joseph named Him Jesus.
Christ Connection: “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). The baby Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy, as well as other prophecies of the coming Savior throughout the Old Testament. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus fulfilled God’s plan of redemption that God planned from the beginning of the world.

Invite kids to work individually or in pairs to complete the activity page “Baby Names.” Kids should number the baby names from 1 to 5 based on their popularity, with 1 being most popular. Review the answers together. (From the 2013 census: 1. Noah, 2. Liam, 3. Jacob, 4. Mason, 5. William; 1. Sophia, 2. Emma, 3. Olivia, 4. Isabella, 5. Ava)
Say • Do you know why your parents gave you the name they did? In today’s Bible story, an angel told Mary and Joseph what to name God’s Son.
Session starter (10 minutes)
Option 1: An important message Instruct kids to form a circle and sit on the floor. Invite them to play the telephone game. Begin the game by whispering a lengthy message to the first player. The player will whisper the message to the kid to her right. Kids will continue whispering the message around the circle until the message reaches the last player. Ask the last player to announce what message he heard. Consider these messages:
• Do not be afraid! God is with you, and you are very special to Him. • You will have a baby. Name Him Jesus. He will be a great king who rules forever. • Jesus will be holy, and He will be called God’s Son. • When the baby comes, name Him Jesus. He will save His people from their sins.
Compare the message announced by the last player to the original message. Was the message relayed correctly?
Say • Today we are going to hear a story from the Bible about special messages Mary and Joseph heard. Each message was delivered by an angel.
Option 2: Did you hear that? • jingle bells • boxes or paper bags Prepare several boxes or paper bags by putting varying numbers of jingle bells in each bag. Fold the bags closed. Challenge the kids to arrange the paper bags in order from the least number of bells to the greatest. Kids may not look in the bags; they should shake the bags and listen to the sound of the bells. When kids finish, open the bags to check their work. If time allows, mix up the bags and play again.
Say •You had to listen carefully to figure out which bags had more bells. In today’s Bible story, Mary and Joseph listened carefully to special messages from an angel. These messages were about something that would happen, and it would change everything!

Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes) • Bibles, 1 per kid • Small Group Visual Pack • index cards • marker Form a group of boys and a group of girls. Assign the boys Matthew 1:18-‐24 to find in their Bibles, and assign girls Luke 1:26-‐56 to find.
Review the timeline in the small group visual pack. Retell or review the Bible story in your own words, or use the bolded text of the Bible story script.
Challenge kids to look at their assigned passages to answer the following questions about the Bible story. Lead boys to answer the questions referenced in the Book of Matthew and girls to answer questions referenced in the Book of Luke.
1. To whom was Mary engaged? (Joseph, Matt. 1:18) 2. Which angel came to speak to Mary? (Gabriel, Luke 1:26-‐27) 3. How did an angel appear to Joseph? (in a dream, Matt. 1:20) 4. What did the angel tell Mary to name the baby? (Jesus, Luke 1:31) 5. What did the angel tell Joseph to name the baby? (Jesus, Matt. 1:21) 6. How long did the angel say Jesus’ kingdom would last? (forever, Luke 1:33) 7. What did the angel tell Joseph that Jesus would do? (save His people from their sins, Matt. 1:21) 8. The angel said Jesus would be whose Son? (the Most High, God; Luke 1:32,35) 9. What does the name Immanuel mean? (“God is with us,” Matt. 1:23) 10. Whom did Mary visit? (Elizabeth, Luke 1:40)
If you choose to review with boys and girls how to become a Christian, explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another teacher if they have questions.
• God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; Col. 1:16-‐17)
• We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Rom. 3:23; 6:23)
• God provided. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. (John 3:16; Eph. 2:8-‐9)
• Jesus gives. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so we can be welcomed into God’s family. (Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 3:18)
• We respond. Believe that Jesus alone saves you. Repent. Tell God that your faith is in Jesus. (Rom. 10:9-‐10,13)

Activity choice (10 minutes)
Option 1: Nearly impossible • construction paper
• coins
Position pieces of construction paper in a 4-‐by-‐4 grid on the floor. Use two different colors, such as yellow and red. Give each kid a few coins. Designate one side of each coin as heads, and the other side as tails.
Guide kids to stand around the grid, approximately five feet away. Tell the kids that everyone will toss his coins onto the paper. All the coins that land on yellow paper should be heads up, and all the coins that land on red paper should be tails up.
Signal for kids to begin. When everyone has tossed his coins, pause the game and examine the coins. If any of the coins have not landed as instructed, instruct kids to pick up their coins and play again. Play several rounds as time allows. Kids may get frustrated if the coins do not all land correctly.
Say • Did that game seem impossible to you? The probability of all the coins landing correctly is very low, but it’s not impossible. Today we heard about something God did that was impossible—except for Him. Nothing is impossible for God! All of the Old Testament prophecies about Jesus’ birth were coming true, and God chose Mary and Joseph to be part of His plan to save people from sin.
• What part did Mary and Joseph have in God’s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus.
Option 2: Mosaic squares • “Mosaic Squares”
• crayons or markers
• scissors
• tape
Print and cut apart the 20 mosaic squares. Distribute the mosaic squares so every kid has at least one. If your group is large, print two sets and form two groups of kids. Allow several minutes for kids to color their mosaic pieces.
When kids finish, lead them to tape the squares together in numerical order to form a 4-‐by-‐5 grid and complete the picture. Point out that each person’s mosaic square is unique, but all the pieces came together to form an even greater picture!

Say • From the time sin entered the world, God was working out His plan to send a Savior. All of the pieces were coming together, and God gave Mary and Joseph important roles in His plan.
• What part did Mary and Joseph have in God’s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus.
Journal and prayer (5 minutes) • pencils
• Bibles
• Journal Page, 1 per kid
• “Moms and Dads” activity page, 1 per kid
Distribute journal pages and pencils to the boys and girls.
Say •Write on your journal page a song or poem about Jesus. You can use it as a prayer to God. What do you know to be true about Jesus? Praise God for Him! Invite kids to share prayer requests. Close the group in prayer. Consider reading one of the following Bible passages as a prayer to God: Psalm 63:1-‐8; Psalm 84:10-‐12; Psalm 139:1-‐6; Psalm 145:1-‐2,8-‐10.
As time allows, lead kids to complete the activity page “Moms and Dads.” Kids will match the children with their parents.
Dismiss to parents – Make sure to check security tags when dismissing children.
