THE April 2015 Issue

Publication of the DeBordieu Colony Community Association “DCCA” www.debordieucolony.org

The beach preservation project is really gaining ground (pun intended) and the pollen is mounting up as well. So, it must be nearing springtime in DeBordieu. I certainly hope so because this global cooling stuff is getting old. Spring Fling is drawing close and it will be fun to see many Colonists come out of hibernation. Let’s get ready to celebrate another special time here at DeBordieu.

At the March 14 DCCA Board Meeting we reviewed a number of items which you can access in the minutes archived on our site. Nothing controversial, thank goodness, and a good financial report was made. Wilson Lowery presented the new candidates for Board membership and explained clearly his committee’s approach to soliciting candidates. Thanks much to him and Bill Owen in particular.

An issue which arose during our open discussion period after adjournment concerned safety issues and rules here in DeBordieu. As we continue to grow – there are over

25 houses under construction – and we thus have more traffic, there is a greater chance of accidents. We have numerous signs posted regarding speed limits, hazards, crosswalks and the like. I recently counted over 20 signs on Luvan and DeBordieu on my side of the road alone after I passed Bonnyneck and eventually turned onto Dune Oaks. More signs are not the answer – obedience to the rules – the law – is what is necessary to control or reduce the threat of accidents. This adherence starts with each of us. Chief Grabarz’ crew cannot be everywhere and we do not desire the feel of “John Law” looking over our shoulders all the time. But, we cannot tolerate disrespect for our rules. We have them for a reason and they apply to all. “I’m late” or “It takes so long to get all the way to my house” are not valid reasons to speed.

Common sense, common courtesy – they go a long way.

Springingly,

Dick Rose

Message From the DCCA President

Safety RemindersThe DCCA Community Safety & Security Department has many responsibilities which are designed to foster a sense of wellness within our community. The department’s primary responsibility is to maintain and enhance the safety and security of the common areas and to assist in providing a safe environment for our residents and their guests. We welcome your participation in community safety and ask that you call Security immediately to report any unsafe activity.

Please respect the community stop signs and speed limits. Please take the time to lock your car doors, take the key out of your golf cart when parking it and remove easily taken items from your boat. Each year some vandalism and thefts do occur in the community and are prevalent in the spring and summer months. Many thefts are crimes of opportunity “remove the opportunity and prevent the crime”.

MEET OUR 2015 BOARD NOMINEES

Mark Your CalendarAnnual Members’ Meeting

Saturday, May 2 at 10:00 am

The DCCA Annual Members’ Meeting is Saturday May 2, 2015 at 10 am at the DeBordieu Clubhouse Colony Room. The purpose of the Annual Member’s Meeting is to review the operations of the Association and announce the election of four new members to the Board of Directors for three-year terms. In accordance with the DeBordieu By-laws, the 2015 Nominating Committee included Wilson Lowery and Bill Owen, representing the Board, and Marcy Choate, Jim Lehman and Lee Piepenbring, as at-large members. The Directors’ terms expiring are Glynn Alexander, Wilson Lowery, Bill Owen and Dick Rose. Community members interested in serving on the Board were encouraged to contact DeBordieu Administration; however, no self-nominations were received. Criteria used in the candidate selection decision included:

• Commitment to the overall well-being and interest of the entire community;• Enthusiasm to serve;• Personal commitment to attend board and committee meetings; and• Career experiences and areas of expertise that correspond with those required for the Board and its committees.

Using the stated criteria over twenty-five members were contacted and more than half of those were women. Most of those contacted declined to be a candidate. There were three women who would like to have served but were not able to commit because of family obligations. We also had three members who declined to serve now but would like to serve in the future when they are able to spend more time in DeBordieu. We are fortunate however to have four candidates who had many of the skills the board will need in the future and who demonstrated their enthusiasm to serve our community. The 2015 nominees for the four Director vacancies are: Sandra S. Bethea, Emerson F. Gower, Jr., Douglas C. (Doug) Patton and Michael E. (Mike) Penland.

Get Your New DCCA Navy/White or White/Navy Decals TODAY!As of March 31, All DCCA Turquoise/White and White/ Turquoise Decals Have Expired.

Reminder:

Trash cans:Since its formation, DeBordieu’s Covenants and Restrictions require each home to be equipped with a ‘service yard’ for storing garbage receptacles, fuel tanks, or similar storage receptacles, electric gas meters, air conditioning equipment, clothes lines, and other unsightly objects in order to conceal them from view from the road and adjacent properties.Trash cans are a necessary part of our everyday lives. As a reminder, please store your trash receptacle in the service area. If the convenience of your garage is preferred, arrangements must be made with your refuse provider to return the can to a specified location ‘out of sight from the road.” Mailboxes:Many residents have already begun the spring cleaning of the exterior of your homes -- pressure washing, repainting, etc. Please keep in mind however, that ‘changing’ the exterior color of any element of your home (including doors and shutters) must receive the prior approval of the ARB. Also, please take note of the condition of your mailboxes and their posts. Add a fresh coat of paint (white or an extremely neutral color such as tan or gray) to the mailbox post. Make sure the box is clean and functioning properly. Replace the box if it is rusted or is missing important parts such as a door or a flag. As a reminder, the Postmaster and Emergency Services require reflective house numbers, a minimum 4-inches, placed on BOTH sides of the mailbox or the post.

DeBordieu & Hobcaw S.C.U.T.E. volunteers are ready for warmer temperatures and the return of nesting loggerhead sea turtles! The season spans from May 15 - Oct. 31 with volunteers walking the beach at sunrise in search of evidence of nesting and hatching sea turtles. DeBordieu & Hobcaw S.C.U.T.E. is one of 30 volunteer turtle projects under the SC Department of Natural Resources.

With the renourishment of the beach at DeBordieu, there will be lots of new habitat and more distance for the turtles to crawl from the tide line to the base of the dunes where they nest. It will be a different kind of season for the turtles and the volunteers adjusting to a different compaction and texture of sand.

We will hold our Spring Turtle Meeting on Sunday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m. on the Blue Heron Deck at the Beach Club. Prospective volunteers will meet earlier on the beach at 3:00 p.m. for a training workshop using simulated turtle nests. Let us know prior to April 26 if you will be attending ([email protected]).
