But being diagnosed with diabetes is no longer as wrenching as it once was, thanks to what doctors and researchers now know about the condition and to the advances in insulin therapy. The majority of those with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which results when the body isn’t able to use insulin correctly. If you have type 2 diabetes, you probably have

insulin resistance. That means that when blood sugar is produced—by eating your favorite mashed potatoes, for instance—it may not speed off to fuel your muscles and tissues as it should, but instead will

build up in the bloodstream and eventually cause damage. The resulting high or erratic glucose levels in the blood can develop into everything from blindness and kidney disease to cardiovascular problems if left untreated. Insulin also plays a key role in type 1 diabetes, where the trouble is caused by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin in the first place. In either case, insulin treatment can be very successful at
