Dear TAFI’ites

Greetings from Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI)

Look up !

TAFI’s next Convention is once again round the corner.

Packed with knowledge, fun and adventure, the Convention is going to be held in Abu Dhabi from 25th to 28th September, 2018.

The theme of the Convention “Innovate – Transform – Disrupt: Redefining the Offline Travel World” is both unique as well as thought-provoking. Various important issues facing the industry will be discussed in the Business Sessions to be held during the Convention with a view to arrive at logical solutions.

These are very exciting times for the travel industry which is passing through a multitude of challenging phases with a brave face.

Global travel trends indicate that moderate growth is expected for the tourism industry despite the uncertain

global economic outlook. Factors such as rising incomes in emerging markets and disposable income in mature markets are expected to drive the future demand for travel.

We have entered a period of drastic change and the industry is reinventing itself to meet the changing expectations, rapid technological advancements and a shifting world economic environment.

Keeping the global trends and your business schedules aside, we would advise you to take a few days off your hectic lifestyle and start packing to enjoy the breath-taking scenic beauty of natural environment around Abu Dhabi.

On behalf of TAFI, I thank all of you from the core of my heart and assure you that we will break all barriers to make this Convention as the most memorable event of your life.

Wishing all of you a wonderful time full of ecstasy and adventure in Abu Dhabi.

Dear TAFI Delegate,Welcome to the capital of the UAE! We are very happy to be hosting you at this year’s Travel Agents Federation of India convention. As you know, the Indian market is hugely important to us, with latest figures compiled by the Department of Culture and Tourism showing that for 2018, up until July this year, we had more than 227,000 Indian guests from your country. These numbers representing a 17.8% increase from the same period last year. For 2017 in total, we welcomed more than 360,000 of your countrymen, so 2018 is already looking like a record-breaking year for Indian tourists. As this shows, India and Indian guests are a vital component to our plans.

These impressive numbers are in part down to you, your colleagues and all the hard work you are putting in to promote Abu Dhabi as a destination. So I would like to thank you for your efforts on behalf of the Department of Culture and Tourism. Mubarak Al Nuaimi Director of Promotions and Overseas Offices Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi

Dear TAFI delegates, We are honoured by the decision of the Indian Travel Agencies Federation (TAFI), to hold its annual convention this year in Abu Dhabi. This is a further endorsement of the strong cultural, social and economic ties that continue to mark the UAE-India relationship. We are also pleased to welcome our guests to Emirates Palace, one of the capital’s key landmarks. The event is the result of close collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the TAFI team to showcase Abu Dhabi’s unique offerings to Indian travellers. Held under the theme “Innovation – Transform – Disrupt – Redefining the Offline Travel World”, your convention is set to discuss the impact of the digital world on the travel and tourism sectors. The travel ecosystem is constantly evolving and, as such, having these discussions amongst industry leaders is instrumental to ensuring all stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge to navigate these unconventional times. In Abu Dhabi, we realize how technology is shaping the user journey and we have multiplied our efforts to ensure we are catering to travelers’ needs. Today, we stand as the top model smart city across the Middle East and Africa region, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. With apps and online systems in place that support the tourism and business infrastructure of the Emirate, Abu Dhabi can share its experience

in leading the way to a sustainable future for generations to come.As the UAE continues its focus on further boosting its knowledge-based economy, tourism is singled out as one of the leading sectors that guide our vision and strategy for the future. Against this backdrop, we have identified India as one of Abu Dhabi’s top overseas source markets for guests, as it has been recording a

remarkable upward trend over the last few years. As such, we have a clear direction to unlock opportunities that would increase outbound tourism from India. Recognising the market’s great potential, we have made relentless efforts to further expand our promotional activities in India in a bid to attract more tourists to the emirate. We continue to promote awareness of Abu Dhabi's tourism and leisure attractions and authentic cultural heritage, as well as its highly-developed business and convention infrastructure across regional and global platforms. This event adds more impetus to our marketing campaigns and promotions as it enables key Indian travel stakeholders to experience our capital and share it with prospective visitors.I would like to wish all delegates positive and instructive

conversations and a pleasant stay in Abu Dhabi.

Abu DhabiA relatively short time ago, Abu Dhabi Emirate was little more than an empty, albeit beautiful, desert inhabited by nomadic tribes, with a sprinkling of villages around the more fertile oasis areas. The economy was based around pearl diving, fishing and date palm cultivation.

Meaning 'Father of the Gazelle' in Arabic, Abu Dhabi was founded when a young antelope led a wandering tribe to fresh water, on an island with

no more than 300 palm (Barasti) huts, a few coral buildings and the Ruler s fort. This simple island settlement has since been transformed into the modern, cosmopolitan city of Abu Dhabi and the highrise capital of the United Arab Emirates.

The discovery of oil in 1958 brought radical change to the emirate and its population. Oil and gas revenue was wisely invested and led to a complete turnaround in Abu Dhabi s fortunes.

Thanks to this new found wealth and the strong leadership of the late UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the emirate prospered and developed, with an infrastructure built virtually from scratch.

Tourism... With over 200 natural islands, more than 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, tranquil oases, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, modern cityscapes, rocky, mountain-like heights, and awe-inspiring deserts, Abu Dhabi offers a diversity of visitor experiences. It is also preserving and leveraging its rich cultural heritage so that visitors can share in a centuries-old history and its traditions, many of which continue today.

Visitors can tour former palaces, forts, one of the world's largest mosques, renovated oases, desert camps and experience falconry, camel trekking and Arabia s famed hospitality. Abu Dhabi s attractions are equally diverse. The emirate s tourism industry is managed, regulated and promoted by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) which operates a world-class hotel and hotel apartment classification system that ensures visitors´ accommodation expectations

are met. It also certifies and trains tourist guides to deliver memorable and informative guest experiences. Abu Dhabi also hosts many major international events, with a significant number being initiated and organised by ADTA. These range from an international aerobatics show, a PGA golf tournament, a desert rally, a gourmet food festival and a summer-long family carnival.

Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey... Giving visitors a once-in-a-lifetime experience and greater understanding of the Arabian Gulf’s ancient pearling industry, the trips start at the Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa and last up to 90 minutes.

Guests climb aboard Jalboot - a traditional pearling dhow with a maximum capacity of 15 people - and set off on a leisurely cruise along the quiet channel lying between Abu Dhabi and Hudairi Yat islands. Seated on traditional Arabian floor cushions, guests enjoy locally-made Arabic coffee and dates while an Emirati guide explains how the country’s forefathers dedicated their lives to diving for seashells in the hope of finding valuable pearls to trade or manufacture jewelry. Local Arabic snacks are served, while a crew member sings traditional Emirati sea-faring songs.

During this highly interactive experience, guests witness the traditional way of opening a living, natural oyster, and receive a souvenir pearl.

Falcon & Saluki show... The award-winning Qasr Al Sarab (Mirage Palace) Desert Resort by Anantara, which lies amidst the towering dunes of the Liwa Desert at the entrance to the famed Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali), has a variety of guest memorable adventure activities. These include: desert walks, tours to the nearby Liwa Oasis, dawn yoga amid the dunes, camel trekking, desert drives, archery, ‘Fat Biking’ on bicycles which have 4.8 inch width tyres which can be deflated to tackle the enormous dunes which surround the resort, horse riding and a falcon and saluki show.

Proving particularly popular, the twice-daily falconry and saluki show is a edutainment about traditional desert hunting. This cultural experience sees four falcons go through their paces ‘swooping’ for tempting prey and the saluki couple ‘Reesha’ (which means feather) and Raddad (which means Defender) race for bait.

The oldest breed of dog, Salukis historically travelled throughout the Middle East and Silk Route with caravans and nomadic tribes. Known for their hunting prowess and being able to achieve speeds of up to 75 kilometres an hour, Salukis were integral to the survival of the local Bedouin.

Cultural Experiences...Camel racing... This is a spectacular sport and a trip to the races can be one of the most memorable highlights of a visit to Abu Dhabi. Cheer on the camels as they gallop around a specially made track, and marvel at how these seemingly ungainly creatures can reach such high speeds. Races normally take place on weekend mornings, with additional races on public holidays.

For a taste of this sport, head to the Al Wathba Camel Race Track (about 45km east of Abu Dhabi on the Al Ain Road), or to the Al Maqam Track near Al Ain. Try to get to the racetracks as early as possible to soak up the atmosphere.

Horse racing... Horses are of great heritage significance in Abu Dhabi, which has a wealth of equestrian talent. The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club is the home of horse racing in the capital with around 16 race meetings a year, usually held in the afternoons or evenings throughout the cooler season, and admission is free. The race night atmosphere is hard to beat, with six races per evening, starting at 30 minute intervals. There is no betting, but the Tri Cast Competition invites race goers to pick the first three finishers in each race, with prizes for the winners.

Henna painting... Using henna to decorate the skin is very popular with female visitors to Abu Dhabi. Henna is a plant dye that has been used throughout Arabia for centuries. It is used on women's hands, feet and hair. Generally, Arabic henna features large, floral patterns and these ‘tattoos' are painless and wash off in a week. The dye comes from the leaves of the henna tree, which are dried and ground. Water is then added to form a paste. Henna's decorative purpose varies from culture to culture, but its most popular use is as make-up for bridal parties. Visitors to Abu Dhabi can get beautiful henna patterns while visiting the emirate’s heritage villages, or while embarking on an exciting desert safari, organised by one of Abu Dhabi’s tour operators.

The Founder’s Memorial... is a permanent national tribute dedicated to commemorating the life, legacy and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. A place to learn about Sheikh Zayed through art, nature, words, stories and multimedia experiences, The Founder’s Memorial offers visitors a range of personal encounters with the late Sheikh Zayed as a man and a

leader, enabling people to gain a deeper understanding of his vast influence on the UAE and the world.

The centerpiece of The Founder’s Memorial is a monumental public artwork by international artist Ralph Helmick called The Constellation, a dynamic three-dimensional portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed that can be experienced differently from multiple viewing points around the

memorial. At night, the shapes of The Constellation shine like stars, evoking the timelessness of Sheikh Zayed’s vision as a guiding light for the UAE people.

Every visit to The Founder’s Memorial is an immersive journey of discovery, exploring his life and legacy, the principles and causes he championed, and the various facets of his visionary leadership.

Cultural Attractions...

The historic Qasr Al Muwaiji... birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE – has been restored to its former glory and reopened to the public as a museum and permanent exhibition. Located in the centre of Al Ain city, Qasr al Muwaiji is an impressive structure that has watched over the oasis for more than 100 years. Built in the early 20th century, this simple but striking building was originally used as a diwan (a council or seat of governance) and as a place for the community to congregate.

The palace... In 1946, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Father of the Nation, moved to Qasr Al Muwaiji, making the palace his diwan, and his family home. His eldest son, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was born at Qasr al Muwaiji two years later, and spent

much of his youth there, learning from his father. When Sheikh Zayed became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966, both he and his son Sheikh Khalifa moved to Abu Dhabi. At around this time, the palace was abandoned and its buildings’ condition deteriorated over time, and for some years it was used as a date plantation. But a number of phases of restoration, culminating with this regeneration project, have made Qasr Al Muwaiji a thriving place of sharing and learning once again.

The restoration... Since 2008, a project of restoration and archaeological excavation has preserved the fabric of Qasr Al Muwaiji and revealed evidence for the development of the palace through history. The conservation team employed traditional methods and materials in the restoration of Qasr Al Muwaiji’s structure, whilst leaving as much as possible in place,

in order to create a place of learning, appreciation and sharing the knowledge behind the preservation of one of Al Ain’s most significant palaces.

This diverse team of specialists has worked together to create a distinctive exhibition at Qasr Al Muwaiji, respecting its past and safeguarding it for the future.

The exhibition... Qasr Al Muwaiji embraces a remarkable exhibition, which stands today as the realisation of the work and efforts of numerous experts, such as archaeologists, conservators, architects, historians and curators. The exhibition, housed in an elegant glass-walled space within the courtyard of Qasr al Muwaiji, tells the story of the palace and its inhabitants. Beyond the main exhibition space, visitors can also experience the historic buildings and impressive courtyard of Qasr al Muwaiji.

The Empty Quarter... The world's largest uninterrupted sand mass, the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) will blow you away with massive expanses of awesome desert and enormous dunes. It’s a landscape of ever-changing endless dunes made famous by the British explorer Wilfred Thesiger and his Emirati and Omani companions in the 1940s and 50s.

Almost a fairytale from ‘1001 nights’, the magnificent Qasr Al Sarab or Mirage Palace is a luxurious oasis in the midst of the desert. Resembling an old Arabian fortress town nestled in the valley of mountainous dunes, this is actually a five-star resort letting you experience lots of desert activities – dune dawn walks, camel trekking, dune bashing, falconry shows and camp fire barbecues.

Perched at the edge of the majestic Rub Al Khali, Tilal Al Liwa is a stunningly secluded desert hideaway. There are restaurants, a sparkling outdoor pool, and a full range of desert activities.

Considered by many to be the world's tallest sand dune, Tel Moreeb is over 300

metres high and the 50 degree incline to the top makes it a prime destination for motor sports enthusiasts. Every winter, the region's most powerful four wheel drivers and quad bikers compete in the Moreeb Hill Climb event, which is part of the Liwa International Festival.

Arabian Nights Village... Nestled among stunning dunes, Arabian Nights Village harnesses the soul and essence of old Arabia. Conceived to let visitors experience the mythical and timeless beauty of the desert and aspects of traditional Emirati life. The desert journey begins as experienced guides transport guests over towering dunes. As they approach the village – which emerges surprisingly from a gigantic dune valley – guests enter a picturesque courtyard overlooked by two traditional-styled watchtowers - Zakher and Al Manhal - each named after residences of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, The Father of the Nation.

There are four types of accommodation available - Bedouin tents (Bayt Al Shaaer), palm houses (Bayt Al Bahar), desert houses

(Bayt Al Bar), and The Fort Tower (Al Manha), inviting visitors to relaxing Arabian interiors, which transport them to different lifestyles from Abu Dhabi’s past.

With lots of desert activities available for the whole family, guests can ride camels, rev-up quad bikes to surmount towering crescents, get the adrenalin pumping while dune bashing with fully qualified drivers, and sand surf down sheer inclines.

The village also offers morning safari, spectacular camel trekking experience and ‘Fat’ biking with special packages designed for couples looking for a romantic getaway.

Although internet is available for emergencies, there are no TVs on-site, so guests enjoy sheer tranquility.

Serving a mix of Arabic and international Cuisine, the Al Maqam restaurant (meaning ‘The Gathering Place’), is where visitors meet and eat together, while listening to traditional Arabic music. There’s also an idyllic 200m² swimming pool to cool down in.

The Desert...Desert safaris & camping... Experience the breathtaking dunes of Al Khaznah between the UAE capital and our Oasis City of Al Ain or explore the desert expanse outside the Liwa oasis in Al Dhafra. With high dunes and long sand valleys, you'll never get bored of adrenaline fueled dune bashing.

Most desert safaris include a thrill-a-minute spot of dune bashing, sand skiing, quad biking, a visit to a camel farm, camel riding, and a traditional meal under the stars. Overnight stays let you enjoy smoky sunsets and luminous sunrises.

Dune bashing... With high dunes and long sand valleys, you'll never get bored of adrenaline fueled dune bashing in Abu Dhabi. Experience the breath taking dunes between the UAE capital and our Oasis City of Al Ain or explore the desert expanse outside the Liwa oasis in Al Dhafra.

A variety of tour operators offer dune bashing trips. Alternatively, when you can tackle the dunes while you stay at Qasr Al

Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara or Tilal Liwa. A half day or an overnight stay at the Arabian Nights Village also includes a dune basing experience.

Sand boarding & skiing... Skiing takes on a whole new meaning on Abu Dhabi’s desert dunes. Boasting the world’s largest dunes, towering hundreds of metres above the surrounding plains, the Liwa Oasis on the edges of the Rub al-Khali or Empty Quarter is a sand skier’s paradise. So strap on your sand board and sashay down the seemingly endless red sand slopes for an exhilarating experience. For novice skiers, daunted by the 300 metre Liwa dunes, skiing down gentler slopes that stretch across the Abu Dhabi desert may be the place to start this daring adventure.

A word of caution though: desert temperatures will be quite high during the day, so aim for the dunes in the early morning. Wear light clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the strong sun, and don’t forget to use plenty of sunscreen.

Off-road driving... The massive Empty Quarter dunes present an awesome driving challenge. If you're in the country during the cooler months and you like adventure, rent a four wheel drive, find a group of eager drivers (you'll need at least three vehicles; never drive alone in the desert) and set out for the sand. Be sure that your vehicle is insured for off-road use and that you have the proper equipment. If you've never driven off road, you should first learn the ropes with one of the several tour companies in Abu Dhabi.

THINGS TO SEE & DO...

Louvre Abu Dhabi...Born of a collaboration between Abu Dhabi and France, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a universal museum that enables visitors to experience art—and humanity—in a new light. Master works by many of the world’s greatest artists are on display, revealing threads of creativity that connect diverse cultures across thousands of years.

Housed in a magnificent domed structure designed by architect Jean Nouvel in Abu Dhabi’s cultural district on Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi opened to the public in November 2017. In the first decade, hundreds of artworks from its own expanding collection will be on view,

in combination with an equal number of masterpieces borrowed from the Louvre and 12 internationally preeminent French partner museums.

Every year, Louvre Abu Dhabi offers visitors a vibrant programme of exhibitions, performances, cultural and education events, a Children’s Museum, a lounge, restaurant, and a boutique. Today Louvre Abu Dhabi is a place for people to meet, learn, reflect, and find their own stories. It presents a different way of looking at art - a gift from the United Arab Emirates to the world.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque...

Mosque Manners... Mosques hold a religious and sacred position for all Muslims. Visitors to mosques should therefore abide by specific ethics and rules and show their full respect by following the instructions indicated below:

• No transparent (see through) clothing• No shorts and skirts• No sleeveless shirts• No clothing with profanity• No tight clothing, no swim wear and no beachwear

This architectural work of art is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshipers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tonnes. The mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site. Reflective pools surround the mosque, amplifying its beauty. The striking white and gold colours shining in the sun are transformed at night by a unique lightning system which reflects the phases of the moon.As a testament to the vision of its founder, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sits majestically at the entrance to Abu Dhabi City Island, distinctly visible from the three main bridges

connecting the island to the main land, the Maqta, Mussafah and the Sheikh Zayed Bridge. The strategic geographical location of the Mosque is a symbolic expression of the emotional connection the Mosque has in the hearts of all UAE citizens particularly because the burial place of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, first President of the UAE, is located beside the mosque.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is well recognized by its pure color, as it is clad with SIVEC marble from Macedonia. Every artistic design element was carefully considered and fits into the overall vision of the Mosque.

Some key contributions to Islamic art found in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque:

• Combining Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid styles, the design of the minarets fuse the wide and diverse Islamic world into one summation of art and beauty.

• Developing the art of ornamentation thorough using multi-colored marble to create unprecedented artistic forums with the help of natural colors in addition to the development of sophisticated techniques associated with the decoration of crowned columns. The crowns are not located on the top of the columns but at the bottom. This extraordinary technique is innovative to Islamic architecture.

• Giving priority to the art of using colours to create original artistic forms. The colours of the walls, columns and the carpet are harmonized together transforming the entire Mosque into an artistic masterpiece and a symphony of colors and shades.

• Using modern techniques of artistic glass work; mosaic, carved and sand blasted glass displaying traditional Islamic designs of symmetry and repetition.

For adrenaline seekers there are three-metre high waves on Bubble’s Barrel, which has the world’s largest surfable sheet wave for flowboards and bodyboards. The Bandit Bomber, a 550–metre coaster, is the first with onboard water and laser effects. Riders can shoot jets of water at targets, drop water bombs and trigger special effects, while people below can spray them with water as they pass.

Sitting atop Jebel Dana, the towering core of the park’s altitude-defying summit and measuring eight metres in diameter, the park’s gigantic pearl is Yas Island’s newest landmark. The park draws on Abu Dhabi’s heritage and has ‘The Lost Pearl’ as its theme. Visitors follow the story of a young Emirati girl on a quest to find a legendary pearl as they make their way around the attractions, which include a souk and pearl-diving exhibits.

ABU DHABI CORNICHEThe Corniche Road spreads across an impressive eight kilometres of manicured waterfront that includes children’s play areas, separate cycle and pedestrian pathways, cafés and restaurants, and the Corniche Beach - a lifeguarded beach park.

Corniche Beach... This lengthy stretch of beach extends along Corniche Road from near the Hilton Hotel to beyond Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, where you’ll find its main entrance. This pristine Corniche beachfront has been awarded coveted Blue Flag status - the internationally renowned eco-label for beaches and marinas that guarantees clean and safe bathing water.

Some 30,000 to 50,000 visitors flock to the Corniche every month, enjoying three separate sections for families, singles and the general public.

WADI ADVENTUREThe region’s first man-made white water rafting, kayaking and surf facility built in the foothills of the majestic Jebel Hafeet.

The park’s 3.3 metre man-made surf wave is the world’s largest and its 1.7 kilometre kayaking channel network is the world’s longest.

Surfing Magazine has voted Wadi Adventure’s surf pool on to its ‘50 Favourite Surfing Sites’ list. The magazine ranks the pool - the only man-made attraction on the list - as the 41st best surfing beach in the world, even though it has artificially created waves.

Bringing together water and adrenaline-filled adventure, Wadi Adventure makes a great day out for water sports enthusiasts and families. Lessons are provided by certified trainers for all levels of competency; guests can bring their own equipment, rent or buy gear from the resort’s shop.

THINGS TO SEE & DO...

AL AIN ZOOThis 900 hectare park near the base of Jebel Hafeet is where visitors can see a large animal collection in enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats. The Al Ain Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, with at least 30% of its 180 species considered endangered.

Giraffe feeding, camel riding and ‘Elezba’ petting zoo are the latest interactive activities. Designed in the style of a local farm, the ‘Elezba’ petting zoo lets families feed and play with sheep, goats, camels, llamas, chicken and ducks, enjoy camel riding or picnic in a designated area.

However, Al Ain Zoo is so much more than just a zoo. It also houses a number of unique facilities and attractions:

Al Ain Safari...Magnificently positioned against the imposing backdrop of Jebel Hafeet, the Al Ain Safari has been carefully crafted out of the desert environment. At 217 hectares it is one of the world’s largest man-made African Safaris and home to a range of native African animals and 2500 plants.

The overall safari experience is completely unique, primarily because visitors are driven entirely by Emirati tour-guides. This special element elevates the safari experience to a new level and highlights the local tradition of warm, sophisticated hospitality and unrivaled passion for the UAE’s proud heritage.

Some of the animals residing in the safari area are critically endangered or locally extinct, such as the Scimitar Oryx and the

Addax, and the Al Ain Safari plays a leading role in the conservation of these and other key species. The Safari also educates guests about the importance of preserving wild species for future generations.

Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre... Situated in the heart of Al Ain Zoo, the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre (SZDLC) is an important educational facility that combines knowledge and learning through interactive exhibits, multimedia and visual materials that have been specially designed by world-class experts and specialists.

ARABIAN WILDLIFE PARKOn Sir Bani Yas Island, the Arabian Wildlife Park is home to more than 10,000 free roaming animals and takes up more than half of the island.

Visitors can now get up close and personal, at eye-level, with the island’s giraffes from a purpose-built viewing platform made completely from recycled materials.

Alternatively, guests of the Danat Resort Jebel Dhanna can book a three-hour tour. There are many Arabian Oryx, gazelles and giraffes, along with hyenas and cheetahs.

AL AIN OASISIn the heart of the city, the Al Ain Oasis has been opened as the UAE’s first curated UNESCO World Heritage site visitor experience. Spread over 1,200 hectares (nearly 3,000 acres) and containing more than 147,000 date palms of up to 100 different varieties, this impressive oasis is filled with palm plantations, many of which are still working farms.

The cool, shady walkways transport you from the heat and noise of the city to a tranquil haven; all you will hear is birdsong and the rustle of the palm fronds. The site introduces visitors to the delicate oasis eco-system and the importance it has played in the development of the emirate. The oasis landscape of Al Ain is shaped by a complex shared water supply based on both wells and ‘aflaj’, the UAE’s traditional irrigation system. Al Ain Oasis has plenty of working examples of the falaj which have been used for centuries to tap into

underground wells.

THINGS TO SEE & DO... JEBEL HAFEETRising 1,240 metres, Jebel Hafeet is the emirate’s highest peak, and UAE’s second. This towering rocky height, which stands guard over Al Ain and borders Oman, is forged out of craggy limestone that has been weathered over millions of years. Significant fossil discoveries have been made in the area, which are vital pieces in the jigsaw of the city’s ancient history.

Over 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years have been found in the Jebel Hafeet foothills.

You can drive or, if you have the stamina, cycle to the top via a winding highway. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over Al Ain, where you can take a break at the Mercure Jebel Hafeet hotel near the Jebel’s peak.

EMIRATES PARK ZOOWith over 1700 animals, including a majestic pair of white tigers, a 31-year-old, 300kg-plus Siberian bear, lions, cheetahs and dozens of zebras housed in the zoo’s ‘Predators’ and ‘Wild Animals’ enclosures, the Emirates Park Zoo in Al Bahia, a north-east suburb of the UAE capital features a park-wide ‘misting system’ which keeps animals and patrons cool in the summer months.

Connected to the zoo, the Emirates Park Resort features air-conditioned accommodation with balconies overlooking the zoo, cave or garden.

Abu Dhabi has numerous dining options and visitors are often bewildered by the sheer volume and diversity of choice across the emirate. Cuisine from around the world mingles in Abu Dhabi with restaurants offering a vibrant and varied mix of international flavours and impressive culinary standards. Hotel outlets serve alcohol and these are complemented by many superb unlicensed outlets across the emirate. Non-Muslims can consume pork in certain restaurants – any dishes using pork ingredients will be prepared separately from non-pork dishes and are clearly marked on the menu.

Local Cuisine... Essential to any cooking in the Arabian Gulf is the concept of hospitality and generosity. For generations, dining has traditionally been celebrated and shared with a great deal of warmth over the dinner table – in the early days set under cover of Bedouin tents beneath an infinite blanket of stars of the desert sky. Visitors can experience this age-old dining

tradition at a plethora of contemporary restaurants, heritage desert camps, and traditional sailing dhows - as well as an array of exciting streetside cafes and restaurants across Abu Dhabi.

In keeping with an historic trading past, fresh produce is readily available. Rise early to catch a glimpse of the plentiful bounty of the Arabian Gulf at Mina Fish Souk – but ‘choose wisely’ to assist sustainable fishing practices – and the Al Mina Fruit & Vegetable Souk is bursting with colour as each seller arranges his produce outside the shops. Even if you are not buying, this area provides excellent photo opportunities.

Today’s visitor can expect an Arabian inspired dinner using the freshest local produce and an assortment of regional spices. Usually consisting of a platter, dishes are prepared using time-honoured techniques, incorporating lamb or chicken, or both as separate dishes, with aromatic rice accompanied by fresh, occasionally

spiced seasonal vegetables. Often, a platter of mezze – a selection of four or five appetiser dishes to share – is served with dinner, and sweet desserts, such as Baklava round off the dinner with a traditional Arabian coffee.

Take advantage of the opportunity to sample Emirati food - a reflection of the UAE’s trading heritage - infused with spices and ingredients from throughout Asia and the Middle East. Cinnamon, saffron and turmeric, along with nuts, limes and dried fruit heighten the flavour of Emirati dishes, some of the most popular of which are Al Harees, a dish of meat and wheat slow-cooked in a clay oven or pot and served with ghee, and Al Majboos, made by boiling meat in water to which a distinctive blend of spices and dried limes are added. Fish is a mainstay of many local dishes with Al Madrooba, a mix of salted fish, spices and thick sauce being one of the most popular while rice is ever present and is most often served with saffron, nuts and spices.

Food & Wine...

Food on the go... Street-side cafés offer a range of quick and delicious snacks, including the popular and inexpensive shawarma - rolled pita bread filled with lamb or chicken carved from a rotating spit. Shawarma stands usually sell other snacks including falafel, small savoury balls made of mashed chickpeas and sesame seeds which are eaten as they are, or rolled into pita bread with salad. Another popular snack ‘to go’ is manakish, cheese melted between folded pita bread. A variation is the zaatar manakish where the cheese is mixed with zaatar ground herbs (usually thyme, oregano and marjoram), sesame seeds and olive oil.

Coffee & Fruit Juices... The serving of traditional Arabic coffee (ghahwa) is a social ritual. Local coffee comes blended with cardamom and saffron, served in tiny, handle-less cups. Fresh fruit juices are an Abu Dhabi speciality and are made to order from orange, mango, banana, kiwi, strawberry, avocado, melon, pomegranate, and pineapple – or a mix of several of these. Most of the restaurants and cafes will serve a variety of freshly squeezes juices.

Its main draws are now Splash (trendy, inexpensive fashion), Shoe Mart (huge range of shoes), Lifestyle (funky gifts and much more) and The Baby Shop. Other smaller shops include computer suppliers and ladies' fashion outlets.

TRADITIONAL MARKETS & SOUKSSouk is Arabic for 'marketplace.' Historically, dhows from the Far East and India would offload their cargo and the goods would be haggled over in the nearby souks. Over the years the goods on sale have diversified dramatically; today alongside the spices, silks and perfumes you'll find electronic goods, souvenirs, clothing and household items. Abu Dhabi's souks are worth a visit for their bustling atmosphere, eclectic variety of goods, and to observe the traditional way of doing business. Also known as the Central or Old Souk, the Al Ain Souk is a great place to explore, savour the local atmosphere and practise your bargaining skills. The souk itself is a rather ramshackle affair but it is certainly different from many of the modern, air conditioned markets found elsewhere. The two outdoor markets - Souk Al Bawadi & Souk Al Qaws are attached to the huge Bawadi Mall in Al Ain. Souk Al Qaws features

Shopping for souvenirs? Get into traditional mode. Ornate wooden carvings, local art, gold jewellery and carpets reflect the beauty and intrigue of Abu Dhabi's Arabian heritage. From the smallest silver pillbox to a large hand-woven carpet, souvenirs come in all shapes and sizes, and can be bought in Abu Dhabi often at a fraction of the cost elsewhere. The trick is to avoid the tourist trap and know where to find authentic items that you will treasure for a lifetime.Gold jewellery... Gold jewellery is in abundant supply, whatever your taste. Gold is priced according to the international daily gold rate, and is available in 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats. Shopping for gold is a fascinating activity, due to the wide range of styles available, from clean and classic western designs to opulent, ornate Arabian wedding jewellery. You can also buy gold ingots in varying sizes, either for investment or to have moulded into your own design. In addition to the weight price, a small charge is added

for craftsmanship, which varies according to the intricacy of design. The Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre has many jewellers, including some of the Gulf's largest. Apart from the souk, you'll also find some big name jewellers in the shopping malls, such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany & Co. Regional jewellers to look out for include Damas, Pure Gold and Rivoli.Carpets... Buying a carpet can be a fascinating experience; most carpets found in Abu Dhabi originate from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Central Asia, and come in an exquisite array of designs and colours. To ensure you are buying the genuine article at a good price, it is advisable to learn a bit about carpets before making your final decision. Visit a number of shops to get a feel for price, quality and traditional designs. A good starting point is the Carpet Souk at the port end of Mina Road. Mina Souk is similarly well stocked. Most malls also have well-stocked carpet shops.

Arabic perfume... Made from the resin of the agarwood tree, oud was historically a valuable commodity and today is still a sought after luxury item. Various types of oud have different aromas, but all have a strong, deep scent when burned. You can buy oud as blocks or chips, along with a special burner. Oud oil, however is the result of a complex extraction process, and is popular with Emiratis who use it as a distinctive, long lasting perfume. The Emirati-owned Yas Perfumes specialises in oud, oud oils and dukhoons, all of which are traditional regional scents used as perfume and incense, with a selection of French blended perfumes as well. Once you have selected a fragrance, browse through the incredible selection of ornate perfume bottles to store it in. There are numerous branches of Yas Perfumes in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, including Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, Emirates Palace and Al Ain Mall.

SOUVENIRS...Dates, chocolates & sweets... Edible souvenirs include delicious Lebanese sweets (most often made from pastry, honey, ground nuts and dates). Iranian caviar is widely available and good value for money, as it is sold without import duty or any added tax. Chocolate made from camels' milk is a luxurious treat with a smooth texture and a unique flavour that comes from blending camel milk with vanilla, honey and cocoa beans. It’s sold in bars, pralines and as camel shaped figurines, and is available from many souvenir shops, as well as supermarkets such as Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society, Lulu and Emirates General Market.Perhaps the most classic edible souvenir is dates; this distinctive fruit holds an important place in Arabian heritage as a vital source of nutrition. Bateel, the renowned dates delicatessen, has an amazing selection of luxury dates and date produce sparkling date juice, date jams and preserves and even balsamic vinegar from dates.

Sougha... Weaving is a centuries-old tradition in Abu Dhabi with, Emirati women using palm leaves, fronds, animal skins and rudimentary textiles for everything from tents, clothing as well as date and water containers. The Sougha initiative, a Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development programme – is aimed at reviving this art of among people living in Abu Dhabi and the emirate’s rural areas. Sougha – meaning a traveller’s gift in Arabic, lets UAE national women, and their buyers, reconnect with a significant part of the emirate’s heritage with local women actively preserving their culture, while making a living from skills passed down through generations.
