Dear Students, Faculty and Staff, A monthly update from Thomas A. Cavalieri, DO, FACOI, FACP, AGSF, Dean Volume 8, Number 4 April 2013 As we look ahead to the last few weeks of the academic year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments of this past month. TRANSITION UPDATE In just over 60 days, we will become RowanSOM, and integration activities to ensure a smooth transition for students, patients, faculty, and staff continued in high gear during April. An April 15 th update from UMDNJ President (Interim) Denise V. Rodgers, MD, addressed the employee transition process, and stated: In May, each employee will receive an assignment letter indicating your assigned institution on July 1, 2013. While some obvious changes will occur, many elements of your employment will remain as they are now. On July 1, 2013, your health and dental benefits, obligations of existing collective negotiated agreements, holidays, vacation and sick leave benefits and many other elements will be the same. Rowan University President Dr. Ali Houshmand consistently has extended a warm welcome to us, and has assured the faculty and staff who deliver and support the important mission of SOM and the graduate programs in Stratford that they will become a vital part of Rowan University. We also are focusing on getting out the word about our exciting future as part of Rowan University: updating the Integration Fact Sheet to reflect important developments and progress; augmenting the Rowan website with additional integration FAQ’s as well as a feature story on “MD’s and DO’s,” for which both Dr. Paul Katz, Dean of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, and I were interviewed; moving ahead to implement the signage plan to rebrand Stratford as a Rowan campus, with work beginning in May and continuing in June; and continuing to plan a “Day One” celebration for Monday, July 1 st at 10 am. Another important goal is to have systems support in place. For example, some of you may have been involved as Rowan is standing up various modules of Banner to support SOM after July 1, populating them with data, testing them, and trouble- shooting as necessary. Training for Banner users on the Rowan modules will be scheduled in May and June. Learning management systems are migrating, web resources are being transferred, and planning for a smooth transfer of email from umdnj.edu to rowan.edu is underway. The process of introducing SOM directors and managers to key Rowan personnel, familiarizing our staff with Rowan policies and practices, and answering questions, continued this month, with Christine M. Brasteter, Senior Director of Contracting & Procurement and Jim Lovegrove, Director of Accounts Payable, Rowan University, attending the April Department Operations Meeting (DOM) as guests. Christine and Jim followed their presentation with “office hours,” which they plan to do on a regular basis in the future. Two Rowan vice presidents, Dr. Kenneth Blank, Vice President for Health Sciences and Mr. Robert Zazzali, Vice President for Employee and Labor Relations, Ethics Liaison Officer, and President's Chief of Staff, addressed almost 200 employees at the Dean’s Forum on April 30 th . On April 30 th , we also learned that unfortunately, a capital project submitted by Rowan on behalf of SOM was not funded under the first round of the “Building Our Future” Bond Act. Rowan President Dr. Ali Houshmand has assured us that our project remains a future Rowan priority so that the school can respond to the State’s looming physician shortage.
