Dear Student,
Thanks for your interest in making your college a “KFC-Free Zone.” As KFCcontinues to move onto college campuses, it is essential that students stopKFC in its tracks by not allowing such a cruel company to set up shop.
Inside this pack, you will find all the campaign materials needed to start yourcampaign to ban KFC. The first thing you’ll want to do is speak with yourstudent government representatives about proposing a ban on the companybecause it continues to allow animals to have their sensitive beaks cut offwith a hot blade and be scalded to death in defeathering tanks. Companieswith such disregard for animal welfare have no place on a college campus, and we’re definitely here to help you every step of the way.
Here is what you will find included in this pack:
• Petitions to help you gather support from students for a ban against KFC• Leaflets explaining the KFC campaign, which you can distribute to your
fellow students• Tear-off fliers, which can be photocopied and hung on bulletin boards
and in common areas• Sample letters to the editor (so that you can generate buzz on campus
about the campaign)• A factsheet about KFC and the history of the campaign• A sample bill for the student governent to use as a guideline
Be sure to keep us posted on the status of your campaign so that we can sendyou any additional materials that you may need and can post your campaignupdates in the “Student Spotlight” section of peta2.com/College.
Please feel free to e-mail us at [email protected] if you have any questionsor concerns.
Sincerely,
Ryan HulingCollege Campaign Coordinator, peta2

If KFC abused dogs or cats the way it abuseschickens, the company could be charged withcruelty to animals. More than 850 million chickens aretortured and killed each year for KFC restaurants. Birds arecrammed by the tens of thousands into sheds that reek ofammonia so strongly that if you were to walk inside, youmight pass out. Just imagine living there. Each bird iscrammed into a space smaller than a piece of notebookpaper, not even enough space to spread one wing theirentire lives. They are fed drugs that cause them to grow soquickly that they often become crippled because their legscannot support the weight of their bodies, and their wingsare often broken when they are thrown into crates bycareless workers. Undercover investigators have even caughton videotape slaughterhouse workers who were stompingon chickens and throwing them around like footballs. At theslaughterhouse, the chickens are shackled upside-down, andmany are still conscious when their throats are slit and theyare dunked into tanks of scalding-hot water for featherremoval.
In their natural habitat, chickens roost in treesand develop relationships with each other. Hensare nurturing, protective mothers. They communicate withtheir babies even while the chicks are still in the shell. Whenthe chicks hatch, their moms watch over them carefully. Butthe chickens in Colonel Sanders’ animal factories never getto be around their mothers. These chicks’ lives are horrifyingfrom the moment they enter the world until they areslaughtered to become a bucket of body parts. They are sentto slaughter when they are still babies, not yet 2 months oldout of a natural lifespan of 10 years. To put it simply: If youeat at KFC, you’re eating babies.
You can help stop this! Please ask KFC to eliminate theworst abuses of its chickens. Let the company know that youwon’t spend money at its restaurants until it improvesconditions for its chickens. Write or call:

Dear Editor,
As you may have heard, KFC is moving onto more and more college campuses. But when students find out thatthe company kills more than 850 million chickens every year—and cuts off baby birds’ sensitive beaks and scaldschickens to death in defeathering tanks—most agree that KFC is not the kind of company they want on campus.
Organizations like PETA have done several undercover investigations into KFC’s “Supplier of the Year”slaughterhouses, only to find workers throwing chickens against walls, spitting tobacco into their eyes, andripping their heads off. If this is the best that KFC has to offer, it’s hard to imagine what the worst is.
I am urging the student government to ban KFC from moving onto campus until the company adopts some basicanimal welfare standards to eliminate the worst abuses, as detailed on peta2.com. It’s time for our college to takea stand against cruelty to animals and make sure that companies that deliberately abuse animals don’t set upshop on our watch.
Sincerely,
[Your Name][Your Class Year]
Dear Editor,
As the student government deliberates about banning KFC from campus, it’s important for students tounderstand what kind of company we are dealing with. KFC has a proven track record of cruelty to animals—suppliers’ employees have been documented throwing chickens against walls, spitting tobacco into their eyes, and ripping their heads off. All these undercover investigation videos are available at peta2.com.
Anybody who takes the time to look into this company is horrified to see the standard cruelty involved in thechicken industry. Chickens killed for KFC have their sensitive beaks cut off with a hot blade and often have theirthroats slit while they’re still conscious, and many are even scalded to death in defeathering tanks. If that isn’tcruelty to animals, I don’t know what is.
I urge the student government and the rest of the student body to take a stand against this cruelty by passinglegislation to ban KFC from moving onto campus—before it’s too late. Companies with such complete disregardfor animal welfare have no place on a college campus, and it’s up to us to set the example.
Sincerely,
[Your Name][Your Class Year]
• The more than 850 million chickens killed each year for KFC’s buckets are crammed by the tens of
thousands into excrement-filled sheds that stink of ammonia fumes.
• The chickens’ legs and wings often break because the birds are bred to be top-heavy and because workers
carelessly throw them into transport crates and force their legs into shackles.
• Chickens’ throats are slit and the animals are dunked into tanks of scalding-hot water to remove their
feathers, often while they are still conscious and able to feel pain.
• KFC lets frustrated factory-farm and slaughterhouse workers handle live birds, so many of the animals
end up being sadistically abused. At a KFC “Supplier of the Year” slaughterhouse in West Virginia,
workers were documented tearing the heads off live birds, spitting tobacco into their eyes, spray-painting
their faces, and violently stomping on them. This was discovered more than two years after KFC promised
PETA that it was taking animal welfare seriously.
• KFC hides behind its Animal Welfare Advisory Council, even though five members of the council have
resigned in frustration. One of them, Adele Douglass, told the Chicago Tribune that KFC “never had any
meetings. They never asked any advice, and then they touted to the press that they had this animal-
welfare advisory committee. I felt like I was being used.”
PETA wants KFC to adopt the animal welfare program developed by five members of its own animal welfare
board. These advisors are the world’s top poultry experts; they advise the meat industry in North America and
Europe and believe that KFC can—and should—adopt these measures. KFC has yet to do any of the following:
• Adopt the “Animal Care Standards” program. This would lower the amount of ammonia in the air in
factory farms, improve the living spaces and lighting in chicken sheds, prohibit the intentional starving of
breeding birds, and ensure that birds are provided with mental and physical stimulation.
• Switch to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK). This would prevent live birds in slaughterhouses from
being abused by workers, having their throats slit, or being scalded while they are still conscious. CAK
would also improve conditions for workers and decrease contamination levels in chickens’ flesh.
• Switch to mechanized chicken gathering. This would drastically reduce the number of broken bones and
painful bruising that birds endure when factory-farm workers carelessly throw them into transport crates.
• Breed for health rather than rapid growth, and stop feeding drugs to chickens. This would reduce the
rate at which birds suffer painful, crippling diseases and injuries, such as broken legs, heart attacks, and
lung failures.
• Make all welfare standards transparent and verifiable. This would simply ensure that the animal welfare
program is being adhered to through announced and unannounced independent audits (the results of
which must be made available to the public through KFC’s Web site).
