COR INQUIETUM | 2016 3

Dear Readers,We are pleased to present to you the 2016 edition of our Province’s Official Newsletter now titled Cor Inquietum (Restless Heart in English). Cor Inquietum, up course, refers to the Restless Heart of our holy father Saint Augustine. For many years, Cor Inquietum was the header of Fr. Eusebio B. Berdon’s column in the annual publication of our newsletter. He was generous enough to let us use it from now on. Gracias to Fr. Berdon!

2016 was a year of movements and new beginnings for all Members of our Province as the friars eagerly anticipated their new assignments for the term 2016 – 2020. As we thanked the previous Provincial Council for their whole-hearted service to the Province, we also welcomed the new one led by Fr. Andres D. Rivera, Jr., OSA as our new Prior Provincial.

2016 also saw the closing of the three-year celebrations for the 450th Anniversary of Augustinian Presence in the Philippines, 450th Anniversary of the Finding of the Image of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu and 50th Anniversary of the Santo Niño Church in Cebu City as a Basilica Minore. The closing Mass and ceremonies were graced by the presence of the Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, Fr. Alejandro Moral Anton, OSA who also ably presided the celebration of our 9th Ordinary Provincial Chapter held from May 2- 6, 2016 at Santo Niño Spirituality Center in Tolo-tolo, Consolacion, Cebu.

As our Province continues its journey, it is our prayer that all its Members may be guided by our thrust for this term – “FILIPINO AUGUSTINIANS BEYOND 450: RENEWAL OF COMMUNITY LIFE FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION.”

To all the Friends of our Augustinian Province, enjoy reading!

Millions of devotees led by the Augustinian friars celebrated the Feast of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu from its opening salvo on January 7, 2016 to the traditional Hubo on January22. On January 17, the feast day itself, Archbishop Jose Palma, D.D., of Cebu presided the Holy Mass at six in the morning held at the Sto. Niño Pilgrim Center. This year’s Fiesta Theme was: Santo Niño: Wells-spring of Mercy and Compassion. The said theme was in consonance with the Jubilee Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016. A series of Novena-Masses preceded the feast day that were presided by guest priests and bishops from all over the country. Religious Sinulog was held every after the 7:30 PM Mass to the delight of every Sto. Niño devotee. The traditional foot procession was also held around Cebu City on the afternoon of January 16 that was attended by at least 2 million devotees. The celebration of the feast of the Holy Child is a particular feast for the Philippine Church. While the rest of the Catholic world alreadyentered the Ordinary Time by the 3rd week of January, Filipino Catholics extend their already long Christmas Season by the celebration of the Feast of Santo Niño in almost all the parishes in the country but most especially in Cebu, Kalibo, Iloilo and Tondo, Manila.

Fiesta Señor 2016 Augustinians lead chanting in 51st IEC On January 24-31, 2016, the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) was historically and successfully held in Cebu City, Cebu. This is the second time that the country was chosen to host the Congress. First was in Manila in 1937 during the 33rd Congress. The success of the 51st IEC is marked by the highlights of the series of events for the congress. The Congress was formally opened with a mass in Plaza Independencia, which was presided by the Papal Legate, His Eminence Charles Maung Cardinal Bo, SDB, DD. Varios activities such as Parish encounters, catechesis on the Eucharist every day, testimonies of the faithful from different countries, Visita Iglesia, Eucharistic procession, and Statio Orbis or closing mass of the Congress. On January 27, 2016, the fourth day of

the Congress proper, the Augustinians were designated to be the cantors of the morning prayers at 8:30 a.m. and Most Rev. Gilbert Garcera, DD, Bishop of the Diocese of Daet, led the entire prayer that ended at around 9:00 a.m. Thirteen Augustinians, both from the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu and the Province of Australasia joined the singing of the psalms and hymns. Eight were solemn professed friars and three novices from the Cebu Province, and two simple professed friars from the Australasia province. Most of these friars shared the same sentiments of this rare opportunity to be part of the historical success of the Congress. They were happy to lead the people into prayer by singing the psalms and hymns for the morning prayers of the IEC’s fourth day.

President Aquino Leads Turnover of Restored Historical Sites

Last March 3, 2016, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) turned over Cebu’s two top historical sites that were damaged by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 2013 to the Augustinian friars. After about six months of construction work, the restoration of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño’s bell tower and the Magellan’s Cross kiosks were completed. Present in the event were the respective representatives of the national government and the church that was held in front of the centuries-old basilica. The president, His Excellency Benigno Aquino III, NHCP Chairman, Ma. Serna I. Diokno, and Chairman of the National Committee on Archives of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Fr. Harold Ll. Rentoria, OSA, who all represented the government. Meanwhile,

the Archbishop of Cebu, His Excellency Jose S. Palma, Rector of the Basilica, Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA and Prior Provincial, Fr. Eusebio Berdon, OSA received the turnover of the historical sites. The Augustinians had been the caretaker of these two historical sites since they were built during the Spanish era. The Magellan’s cross kiosk is a symbol of the Christianization of the Philippines. The Basilica is the home of the miraculous image of Snr. Santo Niño, which was a gift of Ferdinand Magellan to the newly converted Queen of Cebu, Juana. The government spent P14 million for the restoration of the bell tower and P3 million for the Magellan’s Cross kiosks. According to a local broadsheet, the contractor used cement as foundation of the new bell tower. The concrete walls and

beams were clad with the old coral stones from the original bell tower that collapsed during the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on October 15, 2013. President Aquino said in his message that “These two structures are the most popular sites in Cebu. These are treasures that reflect the rich history of your place. …the government has the responsibility to take care of these heritage zones,” It took two years to complete the restoration of the bell tow-er since NHCP had to undergo thorough engineering and architectural researches, which was said by the rector, Fr. Mejares, in his acceptance message. The Augustinians and the devotees of the Holy Child are extremely joyful and thankful to the national government for its effort and expertise in the restoration of these two historical sites.

IGC 2016 approves New Structure of the Vicariate of West Papua; West Papua Augustiniansnow affiliated to OSA-Cebu Province On the penultimate day of the Order’s Intermediate General Chapter (IGC) in Abuja, Nigeria last September 29, 2016, the chapter delegates approved the change of structure on the dependence of the Vicariate of West Papua from the Province of Holland to the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu – Philippines. The Vicariate of West Papua in Indonesia is now under the dependence of the Filipino Augustinian Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu. The process of the affiliationstarted with an official communication of the newly electedVicar, Rev. Fr. Jan Pieter Fatem,

OSA, who was elected last August 24, 2016. In behalf of the vicariate, he humbly requested that the members be accepted and affiliated to the Province of Cebu, that was sent to the Prior Provincial, Rev. Fr. Andres Rivera, Jr., OSA. With the consent of the Prior General, Rev. Fr. Alejandro Anton Moral, OSA and communicated by the Assistant General to Asia and Pacific, Rev. Fr. Tony Banks, OSA, the new vicar was asked to formally write a letter of request of dependence and membership to the Province of Cebu. The Prior General suggested that a referendum was needed by

the members of the Cebu Province as to whether the brothers are prepared to accept the request of the Vicariate. On September 14, 2016, the office of the Provincial Secretary sent a communication to all members of the province for a referendum regarding the request of the Vicariate. And, on September 26, 2016, the referendum got a majority vote of “yes” from the Filipino Augustinians. Out of 120 solemnly professed friars with active voice in the Province, only 80 friars voted: 67 friars votes YES, 13 friars voted NO. A total of 40 friars

or 1/3 of the total number of friars did not participate in the referendum. On September 29, 2016 inNigeria, there was a presentation of the situation of the Vicariate of West Papua and the Province of Netherlands, given by Bernardus Baru (Vic. PAP) and Joop Smit (HOL). In the Acts of the IGC, the Province of Cebu has voted to assume care of the Vicariate of West Papua, which will no longer be under the care of the Province of Netherlands. The Intermediate General Chapter 2016 supported the process to transfer the dependency of the Vicariate of West Papua from the Province of the Netherlands to the Province of Cebu. Another important decision in the IGC 2016 is also the transfer of dependency of the Vicariate of Bolivia from the Province of the Netherlands to the Province of Cebu. Reasons for the affiliation are the present situation on the Province of Holland whose membership is

diminishing in numbers and most are elderly. The Vicariate had two provinces to choose from for affiliation, either to the Province of Australasia or to the Province of Cebu. The Indonesians chose to be affiliated to the Province of Cebu. Same reasons were also cited by the Vicariate of Bolivia. The Vicariate of Bolivia chose the Province of Chile for their affiliation. After the IGC in Nigeria, thethe Prior Provincial, Fr. Rivera, Jr., came back to the country and bringing with him the decision of the chapter. On October 18, 2016, the Prior Provincial and his Council formed an Ad Hoc Committee that will study and prepare the joining of the Vicariate of West Papua to the Province. The following friars were appointed: Fr. Melchor L. Mirador, OSA as chair, Fr. Armando M. Dayao, OSA, Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, OSA, Fr. Jose Rene C. Delariarte, OSA and Fr. Fernando Cleopas, OSA as members.

Marian Pilgrimage set Foot at the Basilica

On October 8, 2016, Saturday, the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lindogon, Simala, Sibonga, Cebu visited the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu. Reputed as her first official visit from her shrine at Lindogon Hills, the image known to her devotees as “Birhen sa Simala” visited first the IEC Pavilion, Mabolo, Cebu City a day before and stayed there for an overnight vigil and a “Halad” Concert. At around 4:30 pm of Saturday, October 8, the image arrived with thunderous welcome and intense piety of the devotees. It was also the first time that the image of Birhen sa Simalavisited the Basilica in a symbolic interpretation to her devotees that the mother visits her Son in the Temple of the Lord. A Mass was offered at 5:30 pm by Rev. Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA, former Rector of the Basilica and concelebrated by Augustinian priests of the BMSN Community. Another round of vigil in constant praying of the rosary and songs as throng of people was unabated in lining up to venerate the image. On the next day, October 9, 2016, a 10:00 am Sunday Mass was offered by Rev. Fr. Romeo Coronel, OSA, Vice Rector and after which, again, with jam-packed grounds of the Pilgrim Center, devotees witnessed the return of the image to Lindogon Hill, Simala in Sibonga town. For the Augustinian friars in the Basilica, the visit was indeed a great sign of the maternal prayers and assurance of the Blessed Virgin as she prays with and for the people drawing to her love and protection. The Rector of the Basilica, Fr. Pacifico Nohara, Jr., OSA was equally edified by this visit as he attribute blessings of God not only to the devotees but also to the new administration of friars who assumed office earlier this year. The visit also, he said, gave chance to the people from the City of Cebu who have not yet visited Simala, to venerate the image through which God wrought miraculous wonders to the lives of the people.

Fr. Rivera Installed Prior Provincial The new Provincial and his Council were solemnly installed by the Prior General, Fr. Alejandro Moral Anton, OSA during the Opening Mass of the 9th Ordinary ProvincialChapter last May 2, 2016 at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. In the same Mass, Fr. Eusebio B. Berdon, OSA, the outgoing provincial, delivered his speech of gratitude. In his speech, he thanked Señor Santo Niño and all the people who helped him in his two terms as Prior Provincial from 2008-2012 and 2012-2016. In a symbolicgesture, Fr. Berdon handed to Fr. Rivera the Seal of the Province that marked the completion of his office and term

as Prior Provincial and the start of Fr. Rivera’s leadership. After receiving it, Fr. Rivera made his Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity publicly declaring his fidelity to the teachings of the Church. Fr. Moral Anton also confirmed the six (6) new provincial counselors: Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, OSA; Fr. Melchor L. Mirador, OSA; Fr. Nelson G. Zerda, OSA; Fr. Sisinio A. Paderog, OSA; Fr. Leo Mario F. Singco, OSA; Fr. Aladdin P. Luzon, OSA. On the second day of the Chapter, Fr. Jose Rene C. Delariarte, OSA was elected as Provincial Treasurer and Fr. John Paul S. Mabanta, OSA as Provincial Secretary.

Mindful of the great responsibility that this office entails for me, I accepted this not because this is part of my personal vision that I wanted to be a provincial. Most of you know very well that I am

just a silent and low profile religious. During my discernment period, I can’t help but feel the distress of a sacred servant to be slaughtered in the end. Further, I have to redirect my path now to the real GPS (God’s Project of Surprises) because my eyes are blurred by the duty roads of confusion, provincial leadership has never been part of my road maps. Nonetheless, in the midst of the turbulent nights, voice of assurance was heard “trust me and follow me” the Lord said. I accepted this for one reason: It is hard to run away and ignore a call from above.

Let me tell you that a week after I received the results of the provincial election, I went to Tagaytay City to ask for enlightenment from a priest about the dominant question in mind then which was: “What must I do?”He counseled me to pray, discern, and be sensitive with images and dreams that come my way. True enough, in those days, the dream that struck a chord on me was when seemingly I was standing above a six-foot wooden fence with a wide opened gate. In the hilly and vast rocky field outside the fence, I saw countless black sheep of different sizes and features. Some were fat and others were thin, some were just steps away from where I was while others were as far as my eyes could see. All were sickly and troubled. Then I heard a voice saying: go to them and tell them to return inside. Pleaded, “I might scare them the moment I come closer to them.” The voice answered: “No, you have the same color with them anyway.” Then I looked myself and realized and said to myself: “Oo nga maitim din pala ako, at ang dumi ko pala.” The dream was cut when my cellphone vibrated with a text from the office of the exorcist of Manila asking me if I could join them on a pray over session. Brothers and sisters, I know the dream has nothing to do with my involvement to the exorcism ministry. I know there is something deep-er to this particular dream. Now, I am closer to you and this is the perfect moment I will say to you brothers and sisters: let us return inside. I amaddressing this not only to the Augustinian friars, but to all of us both spiritually sick and troubled. Santo Niño is calling us right now to get inside, be transformed, and experience healing and abundant life. God is inviting us to be with him. This invitation is from me but from the God of mercy. Let us once more listen and harden not our hearts. To my fellow friars, we are opening a chapter of our province, first, we have to decide now: to remain outside or be with God and be with the community which for us Augustinians – is a gift from God.

Apparently, I believe this is one metaphorical image of being aprovincial; for me, he is a barker of god. As a provincial, I don’t createprograms, our chapter does. I don’t implement programs; we share and live

by them as a community. So what then will this provincial do? First is, I assure you, I will obey what is mandated of me as a provincial. And secondly, I am calling for TRIM-Faith, anacronym for: Transforming, Reconciling, Integrating andMaturing – Faith. I believe if we all have TRIM-faith, the theme of the 9th Ordinary Provincial Chapter which is “Renewal ofCommunity Life for New Evangelization” is really carried out. Yes, the Scriptures, the Sacred Traditions of the Church, the code of Canon Law, the Rule of St. Augustine, the Traditions of the Order, or the Constitutions of the Order will greatly help facilitate harmony on some of our particular actions as religious, but basically, it is our faith in God that will lead us to the ultimate goal of our hearts.

As a newly installed barker of God – the Prior Provincial, honestly, there is nothing new in my pocket. That is why this message is not strictly an inaugural address or a statement that I am starting something new, rather this will only compel each one of us to recall once more what Jesus has inaugurated more than two thousand years ago, that is the “kingdom of God.” In other words, this leadership will be inviting everyone, especially my fellow Augustinians, that in the next four years we shall continue our personal and communal discernment as we create

“Santo Niño is calling us right now to get inside, be transformed, and experience healing and abundant life.”

and implement programs in this 9th Ordinary Provincial Chapter and in order for us to clearly see our directions andparticipate actively to reach our goal which is just there inside the gate: “the building up of the kingdom of God” (Ephesians 4:12).

Lastly, I humbly ask you to pray for me. As I ask theintercession of Mary, our mother and St. Joseph, our patron, St. Michael, the archangel and all the angels for protection from evil one; St. Augustine and St. Monica for inspiration and counsel, and may the image of Señor Sto. Niño remind us of God’s abiding presence; his abundant blessings and graces which our province received and shared throughout these years. Amen.

His Excellency Most Rev. Arturo Bastes, SVD, DD, Bishop of the Diocese of Sorsogon; Very Rev. Fr. Eusebio Berdon, Prior Provincial; Rev. Fr. Tony Banks; Rev. Fr. Jonas Mejares, Rector of the Basilica; Rev. Fr. Harold Rentoria, Executive Director of Kaplag Celebrations;

Dear Sisters and Brothers: We celebrate the closing, not the end, of a year that has a special significance in the life of each one of us, in the life of the Province and of the Order and in the life of the people of these marvelous islands. This is because both the 450 years since the discovery of the Santo Niño are an essential part of our lives. I think this year has been focused on three major objectives; to remember with a grateful memory the past history of our Province, to embrace the future with hope, and to live the present moment with passion. Thankfulness for the past, hope for the future and passion in the present, three basic attitudes-gratitude, hope, and passion-that constitute the moving force of life. In the Augustinian version of this, we can say: to give thanks to God who is the giver of all good things (Rule VIII, 49), to take on the future as people who are blessed and happy in hope (The City of God, XIX, 4, 5), and to live in the present time with passion and with openness to the Spirit, “holding on to love, loving truth, desiring unity” (Sermon 267, 4). But my question today is twofold: What can we discover today in the Santo Niño and in Saint Augustine that can help us live in the fullness of

life, of joy, of happiness with God? And the second question is: What can we, Augustinians, give today to the people of Cebu and of the Philippines, as we look to the Santo Niño? Let us turn to the Word of God that was proclaimed in this Eucharist because we know that the Word of God always gives us light, illumines our mind, and fills our hearts with the love of God. The first reading today says: “God who reads the hearts of men… showed his approval by granting the Holy Spirit to them just as He did to us”. God is Father of all; in Him all of us are equal. He is Father of the children, of the infirm and of the elderly. God sees our hearts always and as a Father he blesses all. But God asks us to be like children. The Santo Niño shows us that children are innocent, fragile, transparent, very loving. The Lord asks us to be transparent as God is. Let us give ourselves to Him as children give themselves to their fathers. This is what God asks of us, the God who sent his Spirit to those who call upon him and who receive him with humility. In the year of mercy, Pope Francis strongly reminds that Jesus, the Son of God is the face of God’s mercy. The Gospel today points out; “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you”. The Son has loved us as the Father has loved him. This is the Love that we can encounter in God when we turn ourselves to him and we let ourselves be enlightened by him through our dear Lord, Jesus Christ. How do we continue to create our future

SPECIAL FEATUREand that of believers in order to live with joy as believers in the Son of God? We can create our future as believers, living in joy through our encounter with the Word of God and encounter with the personal experience of the great Bishop of Hippo. In fact, the two great loves of Saint Augustine were God and the Scriptures, where he was able to know God and to encounter himself to be most profoundly with God. This encounter of Augustine with the Scripture is made known to us in a very deep way during Easter time. Holy Week and Easter time have put us before Christ, the Eternal High Priest, exalted to the glory of the Father after having offered himself as the one and perfect sacrifice of the New Covenant, in which the work of Redemption is completed. On this great mystery Saint Augustine has fixed his gaze and found the joy of conversion in the passion and resurrection of Christ, in whom he found the Truth he was always searching. Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, the Lamb sacrificed and now risen, is the revelation of the face of God, Love for every human being who walks on the paths of time toward eternity. The Apostle John writes; “In this is love; it is not we who have loved God, but it is he who has loved us and sent his Son as victim for the expiation of our sins” (1 John 4, 10). Here is the heart of the Gospel, the central nucleus of Christianity. The light of this loved opened the eyes of Augustine, made him encounter the “beauty ever ancient and ever new” (Conf. X, 27), only in which the human heart finds peace. Humanity needs the message of God made flesh in Christ Jesus: God is Love. Everything has to

begin from this and all must lead back to this: every pastoral action, every theological treatise. As Saint Paul says: ‘If I do not have love, then I mean nothing’ (cfr. 1 Cor. 13, 3). Jesus came to speak of this love of God, of his Kingdom, which resides in his mercy, in his compassion. “Jesus, the face of the mercy of God, has constructed his most delicate words, his most beautiful words when he spoke of his mercy, of his compassion”. And his message comes to us still through our Lord, the Santo Niño of Cebu. Here truly is the message that still today Saint Augustine repeats to the whole Church and, in particular, to this community through the Augustinians and through the figure of Santo Niño: Love is the soul of the life of the Church and of its pastoral action. Following in the way of Saint Augustine and of the Santo Niño, may you be also a Church that announces with openness the “good news” of Christ, his plan of life, his message of reconciliation and pardon. Let us go forth from here carrying in our hearts the joy of being disciples of Love. May the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Good Counsel, to whose maternal protection I entrust you and your love ones, always accompany us. Amen. Viva Pit Señor!

P. Alejandro Moral Anton, OSA, Prior GeneralFraternally on this 28 April 2016, Cebu, Philippines.

Red Candles for Santo Niño The Santo Niño Candle House is a factory that primarily provides candles for the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu, the home of the miraculous image of Senor Santo Niño (the Holy Child) at Cebu in the southern Philippines. The candle house somehow sustains the religious piety of the devotees of the Holy Child in keeping their intentions burning with love and devotion. During this time. The candle house was then administered by the friars assigned at the Augustinian Novitiate and Prayer House Community of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). When in 1996 Fr. Armando “Mandy” Dayao, OSA became Prior of the Novitiate Community and the master of the novices he, devised a series of projects in order to give financial assistance to the Novitiate, including hog raising. He also noticed the continual need of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño Community for a supply of the devotees’ traditional “dagkot” candles for the “Señor,” and consulted the Sisters of the Siervas de Nuestra de Señora de la Paz in Tabunok, Talisay, whose apostolate is candle making. The Augustinian Community of the Basilica gave fraternal encouragement and a financial loan to the

Novitiate Community for buying candle-making equipment, and the candle house began in 1997. Members of the Novitiate Community were the pioneer workers in the candle house. Originally this venture was located just in front of the novitiate’s kitchen, and later was transferred at its present site near the entrance gate of the novitiate compound. In less than a year the candle house generated enough income to cover its own operations and to contribute to novitiate funds. Soon afterwards the increasing demand for candles saw the candle house engage lay workers, and thus the candle house became one of the social apostolates of the Novitiate Community that provides employment for the under-privileged and deserving constituents of Brgy. Mohon, Talisay City, Cebu. In 2004-2008, the candle house redefined its system of employment and management under the initiative of Fray Efren Obja-an, OSA. Each year a novice was also assigned to assist the management of the candle house together with the friar-in-charge. The candle house extended its apostolate by supporting

poor and deserving students for their college education. The candle house sponsors the college tuition fees of the “working students” or “scholars.”By March of 2008, the candle house had twenty-five employees: nine full-time workers, ten part-timers, and six university scholars. In that year a new set of friars was assigned to the novitiate community, and Fr. Dominador “Doming” Besares, OSA became the manager of the candle house. In 2010, a total building renovation was made. The ceiling was raised by five feet (1.50 metres) and exhaust fans and tubes were installed above the wax cooking area. In 2014, the candle house expanded its range of products to include additional styles of candles, and no longer only produced the round small-marooned candles or red candles used in the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño. Whereas before 2014 the Basilica had been the only client of the candle house, the latter now also assists the neighbouring parishes for their various candle needs. The Candle house has a website: http://www.santoninocandlehouse.org The website states the mission of the candle house in the following words: To provide quality and affordable candles inspired from a holistic approach through Augustinian and Christian values. During this current term, the candle house has become directly under the apostolate of the Provicialate community. The Prior Provincial appointed Fr. Fred Jubac, OSA as its friar-manager. Fr. Fred stays in Santo Niño Friary in Mohon, Talisay City and is a member of the Sto. Niño de Cebu Parish community.

The Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in the municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte celebrated its 30th anniversary of its establishment as a parish. The team of pastors together with the pastoral and financial councils endeavored to make the event meaning-ful and memorable. Communal activities like Motorcade, Youth Camp, Tree Planting, Fund Raising, Fun Run, Recognition and Parish Night were organized to highlight the 30 years of faith in action of the parish in Bucas Grande Island. Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish is a young parish and still has a long way to go in its mission of evangelization.

AUGUSTINIAN MISSION

Socorro is the only municipality located in the island of Bucas Grande. This island is a part of the Siargao Islands. Before 1960, there was no Catholic chapel in Socorro, which was still a barrio during that time. Although, there were many Roman Catholics living in the poblacion, there was no Catholic Chapel because of the absence of a leader to motivate the members. Before 1961, the Roman Catholics in Socorro joined the Philippine Independent Church because there was no Catholic Church yet in the locality. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Socorro began only in 1961 when a cooperative movement called “Unitary” was launched. Restoration of the Catholic Church was one of the agenda of the movement so the faithful constructed a Catholic chapel right in the poblacion in a borrowed lot at Virgen del Socorro Street. Fr. Jose vanAsperen, MSC, was the one who blessed the chapel since he was the parish priest of Dapa at that time; and Socorro was still under the jurisdiction of a Parish in Dapa. By virtue of Executive Order No. 419, which Pres. Carlos P. Garcia signed on February 22, 1961, Socorro became a town. Socorro was then a visita of Sto. Niño Parish, Dapa, Surigao del Norte. The parish priest of Dapa periodically held mass in Socorro usually during Sundays, fiesta and other special occasions. On November 19, 1964, the Catholic chapel was destroyed by superthyphoon “Louis.” So, by 1965, a new chapel was constructed right on the spot where the old Catholic Church now stands. During this time, Sunday services were handled by a lay-liturgist, since the parish priest of Dapa could only visit once a month. Sometime in 1979, the old Catholic Church (now Saint Augustine Pastoral Center-SAPC) was constructedunder the financial sponsorship of Fr. John Rutgers, SVD, the parish priest of Dapa at that time. The financial counterpart of the Catholic community in the locality was very minimal.

The construction was supervised by Mr. Dionisio Ruaya and Mr. Warlito Noguerra. And it was Fr. Eduardo Rocha, SVD, who blessed the newly finished Catholic Church sometime in 1980. In November 1985, the MC Brothers (Missionaries of Charity) of Mother Teresa arrived in Socorro in order to survey the place for a possibility of opening a mission in the island. Bro. Francis Montalbo, MC and Bro. Jose MariaSadullosa, MC, started the pioneering works of the MC’s in Bucas Grande Island. It was only on February 5, 1986 that Fr. Alejandrino Plaza, Jr., SVD arrived in Socorro to be its first staying priest. By June 19, 1986, on the occasion of its town fiesta, the parish was officially established by Msgr. Miguel C. Cinches, SVD, DD, the Bishop of Surigao, and he officially confirmed the appointment of Fr. Plaza, SVD, as the parish priest. Fr. Plaza and the MC Brothers stayed in the house of Mrs. Lagapa for a year before they were able to purchase a house and lot just right in the vicinity of the town. After several months of repair and remodeling, the house was finally blessed on February 2, 1987 by Msgr. Vicente Uy, SVD, the Episcopal Vicar of Siargao Island, and it became the rectory of the parish priest of the Roman Catholic Church of Socorro. Since then, the number of churchgoers increased from ten, to thirty, sixty, and a hundred. Those Catholic faithful who were dormant for the past years suddenlybecame alive and renewed their spirit thru active involvement in the community. To prove this observation, the inhabitants of Barangay Helen, who were once under the PhilippineIndependent Church expressed their desire to return to the Catholic Church. And in their sincerity, they constructed a chapel made of local materials so that they could have a place of worship every Sunday. The year 2001 marked the

AUGUSTINIAN MISSION

beginning of a new pastoral administration of the parish when the friars of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu-Philippines took the responsibility of shepherding the flock which was started by the SVDs. The first OSA parish priest assigned in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish was Fr. Sisinio A. Paderog, OSA. The first task which the missionaries faced was their reorientation of the faithful from what was called “the used to” perspective to new life frontiers in an isolated island of Bucas Grande. The Augustinian friars though the leadership of Fr. Paderog with the cooperation and material support and donations from the parishioners, a new and beautiful Catholic Church was constructed and finished beside the convent. It was consecrated in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help on June 19, 2004 by the Most Rev. Antonieto D. Cabajog, DD, Bishop of Surigao del Norte. In the later part of 2007 the old convent was demolished and a new three-story convent was constructed under the supervision of Fr. Paderog and it was finished under the residency Fr. Benjamin C. Unabia, Jr., OSA. At present, a new team of Augustinian pastors are administering the parish. In spite of these graces, the Catholics are still a minority in Socorro, but it is growing. Before, it was believed that there are only five barrios where Catholic communities are present. Pamosaingan is the barrio where one can find the biggest Catholic population in the whole Bucas Grande, formerly under Numancia in Siargao Island (now Del Carmen), Sta. Cruz, Nueva Estrella, Lawigan, San Roque and Dona Helene. But at present three localities in Bucas Grande were added: Sitio Sabang, Barangay Salog and Barangay del Pilar. And in each of the barrios the lay-liturgists are ably taking turns in taking care of the Sunday celebrations. Aside

from the lay-liturgists, other organizations are also actively involved in the parish such as CWL, Catechists, Charismatics, CFD, Apostolado, BEC, Sagrado Corazon,Cofradia del Sto. Niño and Parish Youth. The thrust of the parish is in line with the Diocesan thrust, which is to build a Christian community openly and explicitly proclaimingand witnessing to the presence, reign and victory of Jesus in Bucas Grande Island. After 30 years, the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish has grown considerably from its early beginnings and is harvesting fruits from its thirty years of labor. The missionaries who cleared the ground, cultivated the soil and planted the seed of faith thirty years ago would be joyful to see how much the community of faithful has grown not only in quantity but more so in faith. Through the concertedefforts of the parishioners and the previous and present pastors the parish has endured the various storms and challenges it has faced so far. The parish ever on constant mission and journey will see more changes and more challenges as it continues to move forward in witnessing to Christ and the Gospel. The persistent and tenacious faith of the faithful and the pastors combined by prayers, devotions, commitment and dedication will continue to serve the parish and its apostolate. Ultimately, through the protection of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in unity with the Universal Roman Catholic Church, the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish will continue traversing the waves and tides of time 30 years and beyond towards building the Kingdom of God.

OSA International Novitiate Year 2016 marks a milestone in the history of the Augustinians in the Asia-Pacific region with the opening of the inter-circumscriptional novitiate formation program, the Asia-Pacific Augustinian Novitiate (APAC). It is a concrete product of the collaboration among the different OSAAP circumscriptions. Moreover, APAC is another sym-bol of the internationality of the Order. This program also promotes a more united brotherhood within the Order. Twenty-one (21) formands from four circumscriptions, namely Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu-Philippines, Province of Australia, Vicariate of the Orient – Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Philippines and Delegation of Our lady of Grace (India) – Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Philippines are the first to undergo the said program. The APAN was officially opened last July 3, 2016

with the acceptance of the Novices by Very Rev. Fr. Andres D. Rivera, Jr., O.S.A., the Prior Provincial of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu – Philippines. The said event was graced with the presence of Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Banks, O.S.A., Assistant General to the Asia-Pacific, Very Rev. Fr. Dave Austin, O.S.A., Prior Provincial of the Province of Australia, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Casiño, O.S.A., Vicar Superior of the Vicariate of the Orient – Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Philippines. Present also were Rev. Fr. John Paul Mabanta, O.S.A., Provincial Secretary of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu – Philippines, and Rev. Fr. Euse-bio B. Berdon, O.S.A., the former Prior Provincial of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu – Philippines. On that same day, Rev. Fr. Rodolfo A. Bugna, O.S.A. was installed as the Prior of the Community. The set of formators for the APAN are the following: Rev. Fr. Jose Seidel, Jr., O.S.A., of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu (Novice Master and

Chairman), Rev. Fr. Robert Rafael Dael, O.S.A. of the Vicariate of the Orient (Assistant Novice Master), Rev. Fr. Jepser Bermudez, O.S.A. of the Province of Australia (Assistant Novice Master) and Rev. Fr. Rodolfo Bugna, O.S.A. of the Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu (member). The Asia-Pacific Augustinian Novitiate was preceded by a one-month orientation program for the formands at Seminario San Agustin, Intramuros, Manila, the formation house of the Vicariate of the Orient. During that orientation period, different activities were prepared by the formation team to introduce the candidates to the different aspects of the Novitiate formation. The orientation culminated with a three-day retreat at Tahanang Sta. Monica in Tagaytay City, Batangas. In addition to the internal and personal preparation of the candidates, the physical

structure of the community that was chosen to become the Novitiate house, the Augustinian Novitiate and Prayer House in Lower Mohon, Talisay City, Cebu of the Cebu Province, was also prepared to facilitate and accommodate the bigger number of novices. Thus, an extension to the original building was constructed. This extension houses ten new bedrooms for the novices, two bedrooms for the formators, one Individual-Conference room, a more spacious conference room, a sacristy, a storeroom, and a recreation area. The chapel and the basketball court were renovated. All in all, the Asia-Pacific Augustinian Novitiate is a germinating seed of the hope for a stronger brotherhood and camaraderie in the Order, a buddingdream, for a renewed tomorrow in the journey in Deum.
