Dear People of Saint Timothy’s Church:

Every so often, God drops in our laps an oppor-

tunity to do something that we might not other-

wise have thought to do. In my case, that hap-

pened when, within a couple of days of each oth-

er, I received two reminders, one that it was time

for me to write this article for our church’s news-

letter, “Tidings,” and the other that it was also

time for me to write my article for our school’s

semi-annual publication, St. Timothy’s “Spirit”

magazine. What a fortuitous chance to write to

both groups at the same time, I thought!

The truth is that our church and our school are

both a part of the same parish: St. Timothy’s.

And the need for us to make every effort to work

together and to know each other better is what

motivates this article. Our specific activities may

generally be of different varieties, but our purpose

is the common one of glorifying God in what we

do: worship, education, and service.

I thought of this commonality of purpose and

work when the church’s Men’s Fellowship Group

provided one of parishioner Mike Lewis’ famous

barbeque meals to more than 600 school folks at

the annual back-to-school picnic shortly after this

school term began. There we were: parishion-

ers, Boy Scouts, students, parents, faculty, and

staff, all together, serving and sharing a meal.

Maybe more than anyone else, I see that connec-

tion more often and more clearly. The church

building in which our students worship each week

is the same building in which our parishioners

worship: school chapel on Mondays and Fridays,

church services on Wednesdays and Sundays.

And it is precisely in sharing the same space for

our worship that the very basic bond of our com-

monality is found. The expressions of it will differ

amongst us, but the worship of God will always

unite us. At its heart, that was always the work of

Jesus: to bring us together, to make us one even

as he and the Father are one.

And so all of us will soon, too, have an opportuni-

ty dropped by God in our laps. October 7 is our

annual celebration of Episcopal Schools Sunday,

which we will observe in St. Timothy’s Church

during the 10:30 service that morning. Our head-

master, Mr. Tinnesz, will speak in place of a ser-

mon; school children will assist as readers, aco-

lytes, and ushers; and we will all celebrate to-

gether our common life and our common mission

to know, love, worship, and serve God. Your

presence that morning will serve to remind us all

of our unity, even as we celebrate our diversity.

As always, may God bless you all in your lives

and in all the work you do.

Ever faithfully,

ST. TIMOTHY’S CHURCH September 2018.

DEACON KOPP

Dear People of St. Timothy’s Church:

I witnessed something extraordinary a few weeks

ago that has stuck with me.

With school back in session, it was time for the

annual St. Timothy’s School Barbecue on August

26th.

On the day before members from St. Timothy’s

Church’s Men’s Group started cooking and prepar-

ing food for 600 students, parents, guests, and

teachers.

Throughout the hot humid day and overnight vol-

unteers tended cookers, prepared plates, and or-

ganized logistics. Mike Lewis especially brought

his full talent and genius to bear on their efforts.

By Sunday evening everything was ready. Other

parish volunteers and Boy Scouts from the troop

we sponsor joined with the men to serve plates, fill

drinks, resupply needed items—like cookies!—and

yes, help clean up afterward.

To say the ebullient, hungry throng had a good

time doesn’t capture what was truly extraordinary.

What was happening all around that evening was

the forging of a renewed relationship between St.

Timothy’s School and St. Timothy’s Church.

How did this unfold? To my mind St. Timothy’s

Church provided an extraordinary example of per-

fect service to St. Timothy’s School.

Without drawing overt attention to itself or expect-

ing anything specific in return St. Timothy’s

Church created hospitality, embodied leadership,

and modeled community formed in Christ.

Doing so parishioners enacted one of Jesus’ les-

sons found in Mark’s gospel:

“Whoever wants to be first must be last of

all and servant of all.”

No doubt the St. Timothy’s volunteers were the

last to eat and the primary servants of all on that

extraordinary evening in the Parish Hall.

Just as certainly, though, they were the first—the

vanguard, if you will—in a new movement that will

draw the church and school closer together.

As Chaplain and Assistant to the Rector I have a

foot in both institutions. It is my fondest hope and

intention to do all that I can to assure the two St.

Timothy’s come together as one interconnected

community dedicated to the proposition that serv-

ing God always starts with serving each other first.

Peace,

Deacon Vince

UPCOMING

SPECIAL CHURCH

SCHOOL EVENTS

Rally Day! First Day of

Church School and

Cookout hosted by the

Men’s Fellowship, Sep-

tember 9.

With WIDE OPEN arms and hearts the church school volunteers are prepared to welcome back the many beautiful children of our parish family beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 9, Rally Day 2018! Be sure to register your child(ren) if you have not already. You may register online: http://sttimothyschurch.org/events/church-school-and-youth-group/

There are a few changes you will notice as

we begin our church school year. One of the

biggest changes is that we will now be hold-

ing our children’s chapel in the parlor. The

100+ year old Saint Saviour’s altar has lov-

ingly found a permanent home in the Father

James Parlor. The altar is a precious addition

to this meeting place and has already creat-

ed a more sacred and peaceful environment

for the members of this parish. The children

will enjoy having a quiet place to worship

Sunday mornings and, as we progress

through the year, the parlor chapel will be

the holding place of biblical storytelling and

wondering about God. The children will

learn to understand the meaning of a sacred

place and will gain a new respect for the “Big

Church” with this transition.

Christian Education and Parish Life

Additionally, we will introduce a new curriculum to the Pre-K - 3rd grade classroom, Living the Good News. This curricu-lum will teach our children ways to incorporate the Bible lessons into their daily lives, while following the church lectionary year. You can ex-pect your children to learn from the same Gospel reading you experience in church, inviting family discussion and allowing families to live out the gospel in their daily lives, together. Weaving God’s Promise will be our curriculum for the new classroom arrangements of 4 - 6th grade and 7 - 9th grades. This curriculum will lead the children through a three-year sequence of Biblical stories that are not lectionary based, but will occasionally intersect with the lectionary. Both classroom arrangements will learn from the same stories and with age appropriate les-

sons and activities. Each les-son will include: Holy Scrip-ture, with heavy focus on the teachings and life of Jesus; Christian education, including Episcopal church history, us-ing the Book of Common Prayer, the sacraments, and the liturgical church year; and, finally, a focus on Christian life and service. Our new “High School” class of 10 - 12th graders will expe-rience a variety of faith build-ing activities, including: fo-cused discussion groups sur-rounding topics directly re-quested by the youth; Book of Common Prayer experience, with lessons coming directly from the Catechism; expan-sion on Confirmation Class topics, with classes lead by Fr. Doug or Deacon Kopp; service opportunities with the young-er classrooms; and last but not least, worshipping togeth-er in church for the entirety of a service.

Rally Day, September 9, will

bring us together once again

to celebrate the beginning of

another church school year. I

look forward to this year with

much anticipation. The

growth of our children’s spirit-

uality, in hopes of creating

lifelong Christians, is the ulti-

mate mission of the Church

School, and we look forward

to the challenge, with the

help of the Holy Spirit and all

of God’s Angels supporting us.

Speaking of angels, the Men’s

Fellowship Group will be

providing a delicious meal of

Mike Lewis’ famous pork BBQ

and smoked chicken for Rally

Day. Please join us. We look

forward to seeing our church

family back together again

this fall.

Happy Birthday!

As this brief article is being

written, the choir will be busily

preparing music for the Fall of

the 2018-2019 Choir season in

just a couple of weeks.

I can tell you that it is with

great anticipation of good

things to come that I look for-

ward to meeting with them

again on September 9.

Over the course of the next

few weeks, you will hear be-

loved and time-tested anthems

composed by some of the fin-

est choral masters of sacred

music.

As always … the WELCOME

MAT is out for you!!!

Don’t forget! We still have a

seat for “U” in the choir loft!!

Won’t you please consider

joining us and making our litur-

gies even better? One can’t

spell “ChorUs” without “U”!

Won’t you please join us on

September 9?

John Herrmann

Organist and Choir Director

September has arrived and we

are looking forward to very excit-

ing times at St. Timothy’s this

Fall. The children are back in

school and we are all getting

back into the routines of fresh

starts and planning our activities.

During the month of August, we

hosted Vacation Bible Study for

approximately 40 children and

youth. A special thank you to

Sarah Culton and all the volun-

teers who made this a memora-

ble weekend for the parish.

On Sunday, August 26th, the

Men’s Group cooked for the

school for their back to school

celebration. This required

months of planning by Mike Lew-

is and Duncan Culton to coordi-

nate the event. From Thursday

thru Sunday a large group of the

men shopped, prepped, smoked,

and prepared the food. On Sun-

day afternoon, volunteers from

the church, Boy Scouts, and

school came together to help

serve over 600 students, par-

ents, and staff of St. Timothy’s

School.

Both of these activities are just a

couple of examples of how en-

gaged people have become in

our parish. Summer attendance

is up over previous years, and

more members are volunteering

and participating than I wit-

nessed in past years.

Our Rector vacancy has been

posted and we will be receiving

names through October 7, 2018.

After the closing date, the

Search Committee can access

the candidates and begin the

process of reviewing the names

and their information. Again,

please pray daily for this commit-

tee and the search for our new

Rector. St. Timothy’s has so

much to offer, I am prayerfully

confident this spiritual journey

and process will result in the

calling of a fine priest as our third

Rector.

In October, we will also be kick-

ing off our Every Member Can-

vass. The Standing Stewardship

Committee is working diligently

to finalize the detail of the cam-

paign. More details will be

shared later this month.

Blessings to you all, and thank

you for engaging and lifting up

St. Timothy’s during this year of

transition.

Faithfully,

Cathy Elsea
