Term 2 - Week 1 Friday 3 May 2019
Dear Parents/Carers Welcome to the new school term! I hope you were able to share some relaxed and interesting family times over the holiday break. Our whole school ANZAC Day service was held on the first day of Term 2. This service is always an important event at every school as we continue to educate new generations about the service, sacrifices and contributions that the men and women of our various services have and continue to make to protect and improve the way of life we enjoy in Australia and where possible help the development of other countries. It was a real pleasure to have students and staff members from Sydney Tech High School join in our ceremony and their choir and trumpeter added significantly to the occasion. Our captains and prefects also did an excellent job sharing aspects of the ANZAC story. My thanks go to Ms Flowers, Mrs Palmer and our wonderful student leaders for their coordination of the singing and ANZAC Service. Our thanks goes to Sydney Tech for once again providing their lovely singers. During the holidays a number of Maintenance/Construction jobs were continued. A new kitchen was installed in the basement which will be used by Helping Hands, our Out Of School Hours care providers, and available for classes to do cooking activities! This is a great addition to our school. The roofing on A Block and B Block is continuing to be replaced and we expect this job to completed in about 6 weeks. We would appreciate everyone being very aware of safety around these work sites and to stay a reasonable distance away from the fencing. We appreciate that the work is a bit disruptive to our everyday activities but the results will be worthwhile. The school has had to manage a great deal of these maintenance costs so all the fundraising taking place this year helps immensely with our school learning programs and school environment. Four events that occur early in this term are always of importance to students, staff and parents:
1. The Mothers’ Day Stall was conducted yesterday as part of our breakfast. It was a great morning of family fun that
allowed us to celebrate all the great things our mums do for us. The volunteers and Teachers who assisted with the
food and activities made this a wonderful success. Congratulations everyone.
2. NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy & Numeracy) commences on Tuesday 14 May and will be
completed by Friday 24 May. Students in Years Three and Five in all schools across Australia complete tests in Language
Conventions and Writing, Reading and Numeracy. These will be conducted online according to the timetable distributed
to our students in years 3 & 5. Please contact the class teacher if you need another copy of this timetable. Teachers in
Years 3 & 5 will be continuing to make sure our children are prepared for the tests and will also continue to share
information with you about the types of assessments conducted and ways you can support your children to do their
best.
3. OC Applications- Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2020. If you would like your child considered for Year 5
opportunity class entry in 2020, you will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s
email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online are available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/selective-
high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5. The application website closes on Friday 17 May 2019. No late
applications will be accepted. The OC Test date will be on Wednesday 31st July, 2019.
4. The School Development Day session held on Monday this week involved the staff discussing the pedagogy around the
4C’s and how it effects their teaching. See https://www.smh.com.au/opinion/forget-the-3rs-modern-schools-need-to-
embrace-the-4cs-20170306-gurr8h.html to read more about the 4C’s and why they are so important. We also learned
about the new Science and Technology Curriculum and the Code of Conduct. All very useful sessions.

Congratulations to all staff for their wonderful participation and input throughout the day. A special thanks and congratulations to Miss Morrison, Ms Murchie, Mrs Palmer, Mrs Elmir and Miss Newman for their outstanding presentations to staff. We have such a wealth of knowledge within our own teaching staff so we are very lucky.
