QUOTE OF THE WEEK! Life can only be understood looking backward. It must be lived forward.”
― Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button screenplay
Dear Parents,
Schools across Australia have been preparing for the introduction of the National
Curriculum for the past twelve months. In NSW the Board of Studies has worked
closely with teachers and key education stakeholders to develop syllabuses which relate
to the Australian content and further details which clarify learning.
In 2014 all NSW schools will be required to teach the new English syllabus. The new curriculum builds on the
strengths of the current document and includes a number of new features. For the first time, there will be a
requirement that students experience a range of texts including Australian works, Multiculturalism, Aboriginality
and the Australian Identity and Australian Perspectives. There is an increased emphasis on grammar and the
teaching of quality literature. Student reports will in 2014 reflect the new changes to curriculum content.
The teaching of the new Mathematics syllabus will be formally included in the NSW school system in 2015. With
this in mind, next year is viewed as a time of preparation for the changes to the content which will be necessary.
As the staff go about the process of developing management plans for the coming year, decisions around
implementation strategies need to reflect the need of parents. With this in mind, we have included a maths survey
in today’s newsletter for parents to complete. It would be most helpful if you could forward the survey back to
school in the next couple of weeks.
In addition to subject based content, all syllabuses address contemporary themes and general capabilities as
students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century. For parents and community members who
would like more information about the direction and content of the new syllabuses, the Board of Studies website
has the latest details.

Fair News
What a splendid evening was had at the Twilight Fair!
The fantastic feel-good factor was noted by many who attended and the feedback on behaviour, participation and community support made us feel proud to be members of the Kororo School Community. The variety of stalls, the range of food and the standard of entertainment was an example of what can be achieved when a community comes together. The success of such an event is not possible without the help and support of parents, staff and children. This year saw fewer volunteer helpers than ever before, which meant that those who did volunteer needed to work much harder to ensure the Fair was a success. The result of the awesome input from these generous people was a profit of over $20,000, money which directly benefits every child in Kororo School. A huge thank you to all the businesses who gave their assistance through prizes and donations. We ask that you support these generous local businesses where ever possible. Big thanks too, to all those parents who organised or worked on stalls, chased raffle prizes, donated prizes, cooked cakes, potted plants, set up tables, collected ice, set up BBQ’s, the runners and those that helped clean up, counted money, made craft items, hung up posters, etc. We really appreciate the long day some people put in, several having taken the day off work to help. Lastly, thanks to all the teachers, the front office ladies and students for their enormous effort. We would also like to thank all the people who came along and supported our Fair by spending generously. It could not have been the success it was without ALL of you.
Thank you, Kororo Public School P&C
