DAY OF PINK – APRIL 11th

Day of Pink, the international day to celebrate diversity and inclusion to work towards ending homophobia, trans-phobia and all forms of bullying and dis-crimination, falls on the second Wednesday of April each year. As this conflicts with a holy day, in order to give all of our students an opportunity to be part of this important inclusion activity, the Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink on April 11 this year.

“Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do”. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.”Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion.

There will be various student lead activities taking place in class throughout the week of April 9th-13th at Fallingbrook to help recognize this important day.

BOOK FAIR!Save the Date!

The Fallingbrook Library is excited to announce it will be hosting its second Scholastic Book Fair of the year! The Book Fair will run from April 27 – May 3.

There will be hundreds of choices – best sellers, new titles and lot of series! Have you heard the chatter?Staff and students can’t stop talking about this year’s Forest of Reading nominations! Grade 6 students are participating in Silver Birch Express and Silver Birch

Fiction while Grade 7 and 8 students have been reading a variety of fiction in the Red Maple category. Students have discussed the books with both student and staff

experts. Those students who successfully read, blog and discuss a minimum of 5 books with a staff expert will earn the opportunity to vote for their favourite book.

Voting Day will take place at Fallingbrook on April 20, 2017 with a Celebratory breakfast where certificates will be handed out and a chance to talk about the winning books. Those who earn the right to vote, will have the

opportunity to attend Peel’s Forest of Reading Celebration Day in May at the Powerade Centre. Ms. Gunter is thrilled with the enthusiasm, dedication and

passion of the 104 participating students!

Create! Collaborate! Share!

Students and staff are thrilled with the new Learning Studio at Fallingbrook Middle School. As part of HP and

Microsoft’s Reinvent the Classroom initiative, the Learning Studio provided Fallingbrook with 10 HP

Laptops, 2 Sprouts and a 3D printer. Staff and students are slowly being trained on all the technology and apps provided, which focus on creative learning activities and

design based projects. Fallingbrook is fortunate to be one of 10 Learning Studios in Canada and looks forward

to collaborating with schools across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

More to come on this exciting initiative!

EDUCATION WEEK

Peel board celebrates public Education during Education Week

April 23 to 27

Peel public schools will host hundreds of special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2018. To give schools plenty of time to hold activities, this celebration of education will be held from April 23 to 27. The theme for this year's focus on education is We Inspire.

In addition to inviting parents and community residents to visit their classrooms during the week, Peel schools are hosting open houses, plays/musicals, storytelling, environmental activities, awards assemblies, talent shows and much more.

One of the highlights of Education Week is the presentation of Awards of Excellence. The award recipients are students, volunteers, staff and community partners who have made outstanding contributions to public education in Peel. The awards will be presented to 33 deserving recipients at the Showcase of Excellence ceremony on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the boardroom, HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St., Mississauga.

More than 1,000 individuals will also behonoured during Education Week with Awards of Distinction for their contributions to their school or workplace.

SAFETY AROUND WATERWAYS

Rising and fast moving water in lakes, ponds and creeks is increasingly likely during spring. Children playing in and around storm sewers and watercourses, entering storm sewers through the outfalls, and entering storm sewers through access covers is dangerous. The following information will help keep children safe:

water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and may change quickly

toxic gases may be present in and around storm sewers and watercourses

access is restricted, making rescue attempts are difficult

tragic falls could take place

Please review this information with your children and let them know how dangerous storms sewers and waterways are.

RAISING RESILIENCE

Resilience is an important part of well-being. It is being able to ‘bounce back’ from difficult times, setbacks, and other significant challenges. It includes being able to deal effectively with pressure, and get through tough times.

Raising Resilience Tip:

Accept children & youth for who they are Children and youth are more likely to be resilient if they feel accepted for who they are. Acceptance means we must resist the temptation to judge and criticize. When people feel validated they feel worthy and valued, which means when they encounter setbacks they will have the confidence to try again.

Letting children know specifically what you love about them or why you are proud of them can bolster resilience.

“I am so proud of how you treat others with respect. The way you encouraged your classmates outside the school this afternoon made them feel so special!”

“You worked so hard at that activity today. I know you didn’t come first, but all that matters is that you tried hard – and it looked to me like you gave it everything you had!”

When we let people know we accept and care for them, and offer them specifics, they feel like they can conquer anything!

ANXIETY AWARENESS FUNDRAISER NEWSThank You Fallingbrook Middle School!

March 27, from Cam’s Kids Foundation

On January 31st 2018, also known as “Bell Let's Talk” day, Fallingbrook Middle School, under the leadership of Giota and Athena Curitti, launched a fundraiser for Cam’s Kids. The fundraiser included a week-long bake sale competition and a movie buyout for Inside Out. Students could purchase tickets to buy out of class, with all proceeds going to Cam’s Kids Foundation.

Last year Cam’s Kids Ambassador Athena Curitti worked hard to raise awareness about the foundation, as well as collect donations. This year Athena, along with her mom Giota Curitti (8A teacher), and the tremendous support of the entire Fallingbrook Middle School, raised a total of $1720.10. Cam’s Kids would like to sincerely thank all who participated in this fund and awareness raiser.

Cam’s Kids is extremely appreciative of communities, schools and individuals that work hard to raise awareness and collect donations. All money raised helps fund community projects such as free yoga, nutrition courses, and other wellness activities.

Many many thanks to Fallingbrook Middle School for your generosity and support!
