Dear Parents, Your child has brought home a copy of the Charleston County School District’s Gifted & Talented Artistic Identification Application Instructions, Forms, and Brochure. This document will describe the referral and identification procedures as well as the
opportunities available to those Charleston County students who have been identified as
Artistically Gifted and Talented.
Our nomination period is currently underway and we are accepting
referral/recommendation forms for students in fourth grade and above. If your child has
already been identified as Artistically Gifted and Talented, you do not need to re-
nominate them. If, however, your child has not been identified as Artistically Gifted and
Talented, and you would like for them to be evaluated, please complete a Referral and
Taped Screening Permission Form (this permission form is needed for dance, drama and
music only). Turn these forms into your child’s visual or performing arts teacher. Ask this
teacher to complete a Recommendation Form and taped screening (screenings are for
dance, drama, and music only) for your child. All paperwork, portfolios, and taped
screening forms must be turned in to your child’s Fine Arts Teacher or Principal,
prior to October 12, 2012 in order to be considered. Late or incomplete portfolios and
applications cannot be processed. Make sure you have spoken to your child’s Fine Arts
teacher prior to the October deadline.

Su niño ha llevado a casa una copia del folleto del Distrito Escolar del Condado de
Charleston para el programa de Los Superdotados, Talentosos y Artísticos.
Este documento describe el remite y el procedimiento de identificación como también las

identificados como artísticamente superdotados y talentosos.

tiene que llenar y completar los papeles del remitido y el permiso para una prueba grabada
(Este permiso es solo necesario para baile, drama, y música). Regresen estos formularios a

APPLICATION Deadline October 12, 2012
The application file must be completed before it will be considered. A completed application file includes: 1. A completed Referral Form 2. A completed Arts Teacher Recommendation Form 3. A completed Taped Screening Permission Form (dance, drama, and music only) 4a. A complete taped screening (Fine Arts teachers will record and submit the student performances)
or 4b. A complete digital portfolio (Fine Arts teachers will record and submit the student artwork digitally)
***Late or incomplete submissions will not be processed***
Screenings Dance, drama, and music students will be screened using a digital video taped assessment process. Visual Arts students will be screened using an adjudicated digital portfolio submission.
Dance Screening
Requirements are: Written interview - dance knowledge and skill, attitude and interest Auditions - Student will be evaluated using the following criteria:
o Technical/Physical skills: alignment, flexibility, musicality, ability to learn sequences, ability to make corrections.
o Creative/Improvisation skills: individuality, responding to environment (music, space, other dances, props, etc.), ability to problem solve.
o Artistic/Composition: theme, statement, idea present, development of material. o Throughout the audition: confidence/performance, concentration/energy level.
Drama Screening
Requirements are:
Written interview: drama knowledge and skill, attitude and interest. Audition: Student will be evaluated using the following criteria:
o creativity, movement, originality, articulation, characterization, expression, projection. o Illustrate a mimed interpretation of a particular person/animal going through a specific action for
30 seconds. o A memorized popular monologue.
Drama Screening Suggestions: Ask your drama or language arts teacher to help you prepare monologues to show your ability in drama. Diction, projection and characterization are key parts of your presentation.
Visual Arts Screening Requirements are:
Written interview: knowledge and skill, attitude and interest. Portfolio:
o Student must submit five (5) examples of his/her artwork. o All artwork must be original pieces which demonstrate the student’s best work. Two and three
dimensional media is acceptable.

Pruebas Los estudiantes de baile, drama, y música van a ser aprobados usando una prueba grabada con video digital.
Los estudiantes de artes visuales serán aprobados usando una sumisión del portafolio digital adjunto.
La Prueba de Baile Los requisitos son:
Una entrevista por escrito del conocimiento del baile, la actitud, y el interés Audición: Los estudiantes que sean adicionados serán evaluados usando los siguientes criterios:
o Destreza física y de técnica: alineación, flexibilidad, musicalidad, habilidad de aprender secuencias, y habilidad de hacer correcciones.
o Destreza de Improvisación / creatividad: individualidad, aceptación del ambiente (música, espacio, otros bailes, etc.), habilidad de resolver problemas.
o Composición Artística: tema, declaración, idea presente, desarrollo del material. o Durante la audición: confidencia en la representación, concentración y nivel de energía.
La Prueba de Drama Los requisitos son:
Entrevista por escrito: conocimiento y destreza en el drama, interés y actitud. Audición: creatividad, movimiento, articulación, caracterización, expresión, y proyección.
Ilustrar una interpretación de mímica de una persona o un animal en particular haciendo algo en específico por 30 segundos.
Interpretar de memoria un monólogo popular. Sugerencias de prueba de Drama Pídele a tu maestro de drama o de inglés que te ayude a preparar un monólogo para ver que habilidades tienes. La dicción, proyección, y la caracterización, son partes importantes de tu presentación.
La Prueba de Artes Visuales Los requisitos son:
En la entrevista por escrito: conocimiento y destreza, interés y actitud. Los dibujos del portafolio pueden ser de lo siguiente: lápiz, bolígrafo de dibujo, lápices de colores, o en pasteles.
o Los portafolios de Artes: o Los estudiantes tienen que entregar cinco (5) ejemplos de su trabajo de arte. o Todos los trabajos de arte tienen que ser originales y tienen que demostrar el mejor trabajo de los
estudiantes.. o Los portafolios tienen que tener por lo menos tres (3) diferentes clases de medios. Los medios
aceptados son: dibujo, pintura, fotografía, escultura, imprenta, batik, etc. Se aceptan los siguientes medios de arte en dibujos: lápiz, lápiz de color, o pastel.

Visual Arts Screening Continued o The portfolio must contain at least three (3) different types of media. Acceptable media includes:
drawings, painting, photography, sculpture, printing, batik, etc. Drawings may be in any of the following media: pencil, drawing pen, colored pencil, or pastel.
o No kits (i.e. paint-by-numbers, needlepoint, etc.) accepted. o All work must be properly labeled: name, grade level, school, title, and home phone number. o All two dimensional work is to be contained in a properly labeled portfolio/folder. o All work must be submitted to you child’s visual arts teacher in time to be digitally photographed
by your child’s visual arts teacher and must be turned in to the teacher no later than October 12, 2012. Late or incomplete submissions will not be processed.
Visual Arts Portfolio Suggestions: Two-dimensional artworks should be clean and neat and stored in a portfolio slightly larger than the largest piece of artwork. Two sheets of cardboard or poster board stapled or taped together may serve as a portfolio. Do not roll the artwork. For best results insert a blank sheet of paper between each artwork in the portfolio. Present this work to your child’s visual arts teacher to be digitally photographed and submitted to the Fine Arts Office.
Vocal Music Screening
Requirements are:
Written interview: music knowledge and skill, attitude and interest Audition: technique, intonation, pitches, rhythm, tempo, musicality, originality, tone quality, musical
interpretation, self confidence, potential. o Students will be asked to sing the first verse of “My Country Tis’ of Thee”. o Tonal memory exercises: short patterns will be played or sung and applicant will vocally repeat.
Assessment will be on matched pitch, rhythmic and melodic accuracy. o Tonal improvisation: a short pattern will be played or sung and students will be asked to change a
section and explain how they changed the pattern. o Rhythmic memory; a short pattern will be clapped or played and the student will be asked to
repeat it. Vocal Music Screening Suggestions Ask your chorus teacher to help you; make a tape for accompaniment and to practice tonal memory exercises.
Instrumental Music Screening Choose one: Band or Strings
