Deadline for Bulletin Items is Tuesday at 3 pm. Dear Padre June 14, 2020 Why have many Christian religions been divided over the question of Christ’s Body and Blood? Today’s Gospel indicates that even before the Last Supper, Jesus’ teaching about His Real Presence was met with skepticism. When Jesus said, “The bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world,” the reaction was, “How can this man give us [His] flesh to eat?” (John 6:51–52). When Jesus continued, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in me and I in him,” his hearers shrugged: “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” (John 6:56, 60). John’s inclusion of this incident in his Gospel indicates that some of his contemporaries also denied Christ’s Real Presence. Since then, some Christians have broken away from the Catholic Church because they could not accept the reality of Christ’s Eucharistic Presence. Some contend that Christ was speaking metaphorically—that the bread and wine merely symbolize the spirit of Jesus. Others say that Christ is present only as a result of the faith of the community and doesn’t remain after the worship service. The Catholic Church teaches that when Jesus pronounced, “This is My body...this is My blood,” He meant exactly what He said. For Jews of Jesus’ time, “body” meant the person, and “blood” was the source of life identifiable with the person. Jesus was saying over the bread and wine, “This is My very self.” Church teaching couldn’t be more clear: in the Eucharist “the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1374). —Fr. The hill is known as Signal Hill. The firing of the gun once served a beautiful purpose. It signaled that a ship, on its way to or from India, had arrived in the harbor with a cargo of goods, and was in need of supplies of food and fresh water. A beautiful exchange resulted. There was receiving and giving. But that was a long time ago. The purpose no longer exists. Yet the gun is still fired dutifully every day. However, the firing is now little more than an empty ritual. Once it had a beautiful meaning. Now the meaning has gone out of it. Most of the local people ignore it. Visitors are told, If you hear a loud bang at mid-day, don't worry. It's only the gun going off. However, the ritual still has one thing going for it. Most people know the story behind it. If that story were to be lost, then the ritual would become poorer still. The Eucharist celebrates a wonderful event - the Gift which Jesus made of his life on our behalf. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we tell that story again. But like anything that is repeated over and over again, there is a danger that it may become just a ritual. On this feast day we remember that Christ loves us – present tense. The rituals we undertake are not just a memorial. Rather, we faithfully believe that Christ is present to us, today, now, always! We are privileged to take part in His giving of himself. And we receive, not just a memorial token, but the real and true Body of Christ. Let us live in His presence, act in love for one another, and know that we receive and represent the Living God in all we do. Dear Padre June 14, 2020

Why have many Christian religions been divided over the question of Christ’s Body and Blood?

Today’s Gospel indicates that even before the Last Supper, Jesus’ teaching about His Real Presence was met with skepticism. When Jesus said, “The bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world,” the reaction was, “How can this man give us [His] flesh to eat?” (John 6:51–52). St. Peter Julian Eymard on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is the most solemn feast of the Church. The Church is the Bride of our Lord in all His risen glory, not of Jesus Christ at His birth or His death; when these last two mysteries took place the Church was not yet in existence. Of course she follows her divine Bridegroom to the Crib and accompanies Him in His sufferings, but of these mysteries she has only the remembrance and grace. But Jesus Christ lives with His Church in His Sacrament. People who have never set foot inside one of her churches think she is widowed. They look upon her as a corpse, and upon her temples as places where only death and suffering are spoken of. But today the very ones who never attend her solemn festivals will see her in all her wealth and beauty, in a natural attractiveness which God, her Bridegroom, will enhance with His presence.

Let us pray to the Lord Who gives Himself in the Eucharist, that this sacrament may

bring us salvation and peace.

Lord Jesus Christ, You gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of Your

suffering and death. May our worship of Your Body and Blood help us to

experience the salvation You won for us and the peace of the Kingdom where You live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
