Dear Members and SupportersFor once a clear run on both the A14 and A1 meant that we arrived at Hull Ionians on time. Frothy beer was the order of the day and then as everyone marched off to the dining room, your travelling committee were invited to sit and eat in the corner of the bar. Enough said on that other than we were served Yorkshire Guacamole or mushy peas to the uninitiated.
The game went to form in the first half and CRUFC looked firmly in control. A half time team talk, presumably accompanied by a shot gun saw Hull come out to play for their lives. We were camped defensively for a full 20 minutes and the course of the game started to take on a very different look. An horrendous injury to Cameron Ruddock stopped play for some considerable time followed by another to George Furbank who was assisted from the pitch. We wish both players a speedy recovery. And so the game eventually finished with us 5 points behind and a return to more frothy beer.
Much more rewarding was the 2nd team fixture which took place at the same time back at Volac Park. A strong Cambridge team took
on local rivals Bishops Stortford and won by 40 points to 10. The bar was open and the rugby very entertaining but alas almost no one went to watch. Next season we enter the 2nd team league known as Zoo 1 and we will be playing the likes of Richmond and Blackheath so we need to get behind our boys as this will be rugby at the highest level.
Demolition of the green huts is planned for the end of April and the great building project will commence. We are still looking for support and if your company can assist with discounts and anything associated with the construction we would love to hear from you.
Today we welcome Blaydon who are very welcoming hosts. Earlier this year they invited us to their Christmas lunch, allowed us to win the fixture and me the raffle. We wish them all the best in their struggle to remain in the league but hope that our boys can turn it on today and run in some tries.

Partnering for scientific leadership
What science can do
Circulating tumour DNAAstraZeneca has pioneered the use of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in the diagnosis of cancer. Pieces of DNA break off from a tumour and circulate in the bloodstream where they can be analysed to give genetic information about a patient’s tumour. This allows healthcare professionals to determine the right treatment for the patient using a non-invasive blood test.
At AstraZeneca, we believe in the power of what science can do to transform serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, COPD and asthma.
We also know that breakthrough science doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens through partnership.
Our expertise spans the entire life-cycle of a medicine and we have a rare combination of discovery and development strengths in small molecules and biologics, immunotherapies, protein engineering technologies and devices. These are reinforced by a strong focus on translational science and personalised healthcare.

crufcclubhouse extension appeal
Dear Members, Friends and Supporters,
You may be aware that the club has a planning application approved for the construction of much needed changing room facilities.
We currently have a number of portacabins in a delapidated condition and because of this and an expired temporary planning consent, they need to be removed at the end of this season. These units are where our Mini & Youth children currently have to change which, due to the leaking roofs, broken windows and holes in the floor, is very unsatisfactory.
In addition if we have more than one Senior game on a Saturday there can be as many as 6 teams (120 players) sharing the same facilities which comprises a shower block in need of complete repair & refurbishment.
If we are to make our facility fit for purpose we need to raise £500,000 to carry out the extension & improvements.
A very large sum but one we have already made huge strides towards raising through the following...
• The RFU have confirmed grants and loans of £170,000. • The land fill tax fund have indicated that we can apply for up to £50,000 and our
current application for funds is under consideration.• The City Council have approved £200,000 s106 funds subject to a condition that the
club can raise the balance of the funds required. • We have also had discussions with other possible sources of third party grants and
will make applications in line with their award cycles.
With this improvement, at long last we can commit to be a leading club in girls and womens rugby and increase our Colts and Senior mens teams to ensure all players have a team to play in and there is a pathway from mini to senior rugby. This also gives us an opportunity to expand its use to other clubs and societies in line with the requirements of third party funding.
Without the investment in improved facilities none of this can take place and we will not retain our position as the leading club in East Anglia for all age groups & genders. To achieve our target we need to raise £80,000 and ask that you consider making a donation to ensure we deliver the facility we need. Your support will be recognised and remembered on a proposed supporters board.
Please make a donation to our “Changing Room Fund” via the Cambridge Rugby Union Football Club Community Account. Your money will be held in this account and if for any reason the project does not go ahead your money will be refunded.Account details are: CRUFC Community, Acc No: 83277232 Sort: 20-17-35

match reportvs hull ionians
Vital victory lifts I’s survival hopes...
1st April 2017Hull Ionians did their NL1 hopes a power of good with this five point/five points win over Cambridge. The visitors, inspired by half backs Stef Liebenberg and Jack Green, took an early grip on the game, playing a high tempo style that had the hosts fully occupied with defensive duties and they scored two tries in the opening quarter hour.
The first score came after 9 minutes, with centre James Ayrton running onto a deft grubber kick from Green, following an incursion from the pack and minutes later Liebenberg took a quick tap penalty (one of many) to put Albert Portsmouth into space and he fed the supporting back rower, Jake McCloud to cross, with the Ionians defence opened with consummate ease.
Ionians learned valuable lessons and they reduced the deficit with Callum Irvine and Lewis Minikin combining to cut a hole through the visitor’s defence, Phil Eggleshaw drove on and he popped a pass out to James Sanderson who ran in unmolested.
Eggleshaw was then dispatched to the bin and a revitalised Cambridge pack pushed for the line, allowing Liebenberg to send out a looping pass to Ayrton to cross unopposed.
Restored to a full complement Ionians produced a powerful scrum to escape from close to their line to half way but then breathed a sigh of relief when winger, Mike Ayrton, was brought back for deliberate obstruction after he was allowed to jink his way through and clear up the touchline and Ionians went into the break 7–9 in arrears.
Ionians had an opportunity early in the second half but pressure on the visitors line came to nothing and they had to wait until close to the hour to benefit from plenty of
possession; Greg Lound made the initial break with the pack carrying the ball on before winger Wilson grasped possession and sprinted away. Despite being caught he was able to off load to the supporting Isaac Green and he dotted down under the posts.
As Cambridge came under increasing pressure they had Mike Ayrton yellow carded and from the resulting penalty Ionians won a line-out, after the initial drive from the pack the ball was switched down the blind side to put Sam Wilson over. The Isaac Green conversion gave the hosts the lead for the first time with 15 minutes remaining.
Cambridge responded with a scintillating try involving sublime skills from Jack Green, who’s reverse pass picked out Albert Portsmouth who raced over to snatch back the lead, 21–26.
The removal of Liebenberg severely blunted the visitors cutting edge and the Ionians pack were shading the forward exchanges. The home side botched a scoring opportunity but they were awarded a penalty which was kicked to the corner. A successful catch and drive took them to within 5 yards and Ally Forth popped up and through the middle of the ruck to score. Ionians now held a narrow 2 point lead, 28–26.
Further pressure extended the lead through a Callum Irvine drop goal, not the best option given the referee was signalling a free ball, but Ionians were able to see out the final minutes without presenting a sniff to the opposition and recorded a much needed, and deserved, victory.
Malcolm Knowles(Match report supplied by Hull Ionians)
Destiny is all...
Or, in Viking/Anglo-Saxon speak, wyrd bid ful araed – fate is wholly inexorable. Mathematically, the consensus is one point from safety. And when you think about all the points that have gone begging this season, for whatever reason, it’s an unnecessary drama as we approach the denouement of this term. Or is it? Really? If someone had said prior to the season it’ll still be competitive until the end, and you’ll still be in National One come the end of April, I’m pretty sure there’d be a numberof hands being bitten off in gratitude. The demise of London Welsh may have kept it interesting at the bottom of the table, but it’s not been good for the old ticker, has it?
No one’s faulting the effort, the endeavour, or even the size of the task that lay before the squad and the coaching team ahead of the season back in September, but it has been a squeaky old time. Ten wins, give or take, plus bonuses, ought to have been enough at the start – let’s hope that all those BPs count for something! Have you looked at the table, by the way? Do you know that we’ve got more try bonus points than anyone other than runaway winners Hartpury? That should tell it’s own story as our boys have done us proud, for the most part, in that difficult first year back.
There’s plenty of time to speak about lessons learned, or those that need learning. There’s plenty of time, unfortunately, to speculate as to who will be leaving us, and joining us, over the summer. There’s plenty of time to look
back on some glorious moments since that first kick off back in September at Plymouth. And to wonder why no one bought travel sickness pills for the roller coaster ride that ensued. All that, and more, is possible, but ONLY after safety is secured. So forget everything else and shout the boys on today, because many of those bonus points are down to you, who watch faithfully week in, week out.
Today is all about setting up two games that will shape our approach to next season. Ampthill away after Easter is going to be tough, as is our final fling against Plymouth here at the end of the month. As promotion is out of their hands, they’re probably going to be looking to next term too by the time they get to Grantchester Road. And whilst we’re about the job today, spare a thought for our opponents, Blaydon, who are still in the mix for relegation with Hull Ionians and Esher and ourselves. It’s a brutal environment, especially down near the trap-door.
I hope everyone enjoys today for all the right reasons and we can hold our heads up at the end of it, going into those last couple of fixtures. Because promotion last time out was nowhere near as easy as the table suggested at the end of the season. And we earned it the hard way over three years of rebuilding. So, no pressure.
