Erik Coleman and Adrian Murrell Even when he was still buckling his chinstrap, Erik Coleman always thought of himself as more than a football player. Coleman embraces the role of helping others, serving as a union rep for five years in his career. About a month ago, he joined the NFL Alumni Association as

director of chapter relations.

“I’d like to spread the word to former players about the benefits of joining the NFL Alumni,” he said. “Being part of the organization, I’d like to assist the chapters in being more active in the community, getting younger former players involved. I think that when you first leave the league, it’s tough to engage in football activities because a lot of the time you get fired from playing the job and you don’t want to go back to that area.”

Stationed in Mount Laurel, NJ, the NFL Alumni Association’s mission is to help enrich former players’ lives when their days on the gridiron are over by offering numerous benefits and teaming up with different organizations to raise money for kids throughout different communities. Their motto: Care for the kids and care for our own. “The great thing about the NFL alumni is you can go through one training camp and be a member,” Coleman said. “You can be a former coach or a cheerleader. We even have executive memberships, so if you’re a businessman, a businesswoman or a fan of the game, you can join the NFL Alumni and make a difference in your community and be a part of what we do here.”

Coleman joins Adrian Murrell, who’s been with the NFL Alumni for 10 years and now serves as president of the Carolinas chapter.

“Erik’s role is a little bit different than mine. His is more along the lines of trying to figure out how chapters are doing, making sure they’re healthy,” said Murrell, a Jets tailback for five seasons and the starter from 1995-97. “My goal is to get more members in our community to be active in our Care for Kids program. A big part of that program is a golf tournament that we hold annually. There’s some exciting things that the Alumni Association does offer, but we’re just trying to get the word out to guys in the community and have them participate in the Alumni itself.”

Murrell has revived a once dormant Carolinas chapter, putting together its first golf outing in three years. Moving forward, the chapter will host more tournaments and other events, but Murrell is particularly excited about a barbecue in partnership with the Ada Jenkins Center, which aims to help underprivileged kids and adults.

“My goal is to have this chapter back in the community, giving our guys a purpose to be a part of some our programs because they’re noteworthy programs,” he said. “I want to leave it in better shape than what you found it. I think that guys want to be active, guys want to figure out how they can be more involved with the Alumni, and I think that’s really what my next year’s goal is, to have these two or three tournaments come to fruition and have the kids in the community benefit from what we’re doing.”
