2019 La Rabida Annual Report2019 La Rabida Annual Report

Dear Friends,For many of the children served by La Rabida, life’s everyday activities are a challenge. Some are unable to breathe without the support of a ventilator. Many rely on a wheelchair or walker because cerebral palsy impacts their mobility. Others face the lasting impact of traumatic events that make it difficult to get through the day.

By pairing our families with a dedicated team that assists with respiratory needs, nutrition, physical, cognitive and emotional development, and in-home support services, we are able to provide the holistic care our patients and families need.

We teach our families how to care for their child who may be dependent on medical technology, our patients get the physical therapy they need to get stronger and compensate for their disabilities, and we introduce techniques to help our patients deal with their traumatic experiences.

At La Rabida, we have made it our mission to provide comprehensive care to children facing lifelong, complex medical conditions. However, the treatment required is not always covered by insurance – public or private. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to live a happy and healthy life. That is why we provide these services regardless of a family's financial circumstances. Friends like you allow us to do this.

It is because of our FriendsIt is because of our Friends that we are able to provide expert quality care to patients with special healthcare needs, like children who are dependent on medical technology. Through our Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH), we provide "one stop shopping” for children

and families facing these unique obstacles and require the support of a team of specialists.

It is because of our FriendsIt is because of our Friends that we are able to provide the trauma nformed care our kids deserve. Through our Chicago Child Trauma Center (CCTC), we bring trauma-focused assessments and interventions to children who have experienced traumatic stressors such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and community violence. With the positive, strengths-based approach, children are able to overcome and heal from their trauma. As the only trauma-focused outpatient program for children in the area, the CCTC is able to provide the care children need to live happy and healthy lives.

It is also because of our FriendsIt is also because of our Friends that we make therapy enjoyable for our kids. One way we do this is by providing therapy in the pool. By reducing tension and stress on a child’s joints and muscles, aquatic therapy can either assist movement or offer added resistance for patients working to strengthen different muscles. Patients with cerebral palsy, sickle cell disease, arthritis, or children who are in pain after orthopedic surgery all benefit from this type of therapy because it helps to relieve pain and ease movement – all while getting to splash in the pool with their therapist.

Our patients depend on these crucial services to live happy and healthy lives. La Rabida’s care teams help

families set immediate and future goals for their child by offering a number of specialized primary care programs that are tailored to the specific needs of children living with complex medical conditions. Our priority is to help our patients reach their medical, developmental and social-emotional milestones. It is

because of the support from Friends like you that we are able to do so.

La Rabida wouldn’t be the special place that it is without the help and support of our Friends like you. It is because It is because of Friends like you that we of Friends like you that we can make our mission a can make our mission a reality each and every day.reality each and every day.

Gratefully,

Year in Review This year, we have made great advancements across La Rabida. By expanding our services and implementing new programs that increase the access to quality healthcare to patients, we have been able to touch the lives of more families.

Walk-In Clinic

This year, we were able to expand our services by offering a walk-in clinicwalk-in clinic that is available to our children and families.

The walk-in clinic serves as a resource to children who show symptoms of minor illnesses, such as an earache, fever or stomach bug, and are unable to get an immediate appointment to see their pediatrician.

In an effort to reduce trips to the emergency room, the walk-in clinic allows families to receive immediate care. La Rabida’s walk-in clinic services allow us to increase the access to care for our patients.

Integrated Behavioral HealthServices

An area of focus for La Rabida this year has been expanding our integrated behavioral healthintegrated behavioral health services.

Our expert team of trauma clinicians work within our outpatient clinics alongside each patient’s medical team to identify a child’s behavioral health needs at an early stage.

By integrating behavioral health care into a patient’s medical appointment, we are able to directly meet the needs of the children we serve by increasing the access to treatment, reducing the stigma surrounding these services, and provide holistic care to families. We have been successful in reaching more children and identifying behavioral health needs quickly.

Tube Feeding Task Force( TFTF )

La Rabida’s Tube Feeding Task Force (TFTF)Tube Feeding Task Force (TFTF), an interdisciplinary program that was introduced to kids this year, is dedicated to positively transforming the mealtime experience for children who rely on feeding tubes.

The TFTF includes staff from La Rabida’s rehab, child life, nutrition, and other clinical departments and all share the same goal – to promote a positive feeding experience for patients.

To accomplish this, the dedicated task force creates opportunities for socialization during mealtime, provides strategies to reduce discomfort, optimize skills to promote oral feeding experiences, and promotes bonding with caregivers during feeding and mealtime routines.
