God gives us the courage to do what is right if we trust Him.

The hard times that we go through are part of God’s plan to make us stronger and to prepare us for the future. How do you think David felt when he saw wild animals trying to hurt his sheep? Now imagine how he felt after he killed them! Can you think of some ways that these

experiences helped him get ready to face Goliath?

If you saw a bully being mean to someone, what kinds of things could you do?

Read Philippians 4:13.

Goliath threatened people and defied God. But David had so much faith in how big God was, he hardly thought about how small he seemed compared to the giant! He said, You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty (1 Samuel 17:45).

A SPECIAL GIFT A FIERCE BATTLE AN AMAZING VICTORY

God knows our hearts and gives us special abilities.

What talents has God given you—like drawing, soccer or singing? Chris was really good at playing guitar, so why do you think he quit? What would God tell him?

Read Joshua 1:9.

What does Jesus think about our weakness and fear? Why?

David’s brothers looked down on him for being young—but the prophet Samuel chose him for God’s special purpose.

Read 1 Samuel 16:10-13. God saw something special in David, and He sees something special in you, too.

What do you think is more important—how you look on the outside, or what is inside your heart? Why? 1 Samuel 16:7 says, The Lord doesn’t make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions. When our hearts are filled with faith in God, we have the courage to do amazing things!

When God is on your side, there is nothing you can’t achieve!

What do you think David was feeling as he faced Goliath with no other soldiers on the battlefield? You might think he felt all alone—but he said in 1 Samuel 17:46-47, Today the Lord will conquer you.... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!... It is his battle, not ours. The Lord will give you to us!

What do you think Chris was thinking about while he played his guitar again at school?

Read Psalm 44:7-8.

Can you talk about some hard things that you are facing today? Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.

What are some ways God can help you with these problems? Pray for His wisdom, and praise Him for helping you.

PRAY: Dear God, thank you for my special gifts, and help me remember that what is inside my heart is more important than what I look like on the outside. Amen.

PRAY: Lord Jesus, You chose to do a hard thing by dying on the cross for my sins. Help me to live my life for You each day. Amen.

PRAY: Heavenly Father, I know You are with me all the time. Give me the boldness to do the right thing, even if it’s hard. Amen.
