1 Dear Exeter Teachers, The Professional Development Committee is pleased to offer you this Professional Development Catalogue of offerings for Summer 2011. The committee believes that effective teachers are the best investment in student achievement that a school district can make. Consequently, we are committed to offering quality professional development that will provide knowledge, tools, and strategies for effective instruction, as well as foster collaboration among professionals to increase student learning. This booklet represents a variety of important educational topics that we hope will meet the needs for professional growth of our staff. Many are offered onsite in one of the Exeter schools. Others are offered through our partnership with Berks County Intermediate Unit. There will be three designated flexible inservice dates in the 2011-2012 school calendar. These dates are: November 28, 2011, January 16, 2012, and February 17, 2012. All sessions presented in this booklet are eligible for flex day credit. Members of the professional staff may receive a maximum credit of three (3) flex days for participation in these sessions, as well as Act 48 credit. Members of the professional staff shall take no more than three flex days. All offerings are eligible for Act 48 credit with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Please note that for a session to run, there must be at least (5) five enrollees. You will be notified if a session is canceled due to low enrollment. Although our committee has worked to provide varied offerings to meet the diverse professional needs of our staff, we recognize that there may be some teachers whose needs can be better met through other professional development experience not contained within this booklet. For this reason, teachers also have the option of proposing a professional development experience of their own or with a colleague. In this booklet, we are including a copy of a Proposal for Self-Designed Professional Development (Appendix I). If teachers are requesting flex day credit for a self-designed proposal, they must indicate how this experience will improve student learning in their classrooms. All proposals must be pre-approved by a building administrator and by the Assistant Superintendent. Please do not assume approval until it is confirmed. Registration for sessions in Section I will occur through My Learning Plan. If you would like to register for sessions in Section II, please follow the BCIU directions in Section II to register for IU workshops. You will need to complete Appendix II and submit the completed form to Dr. Mata for BCIU workshops. If you are participating in Section I sessions, you will have the opportunity to indicate your flex day choice on the sign-in sheet at the workshop. Attendance at a session from Section II at the BCIU will be credited toward a flex day upon confirmation of attendance from the BCIU. The Professional Development Committee hopes that teachers find opportunities for growth and reflection within this booklet. If you have any questions regarding the contents, please direct them to Dr. Warren Mata, Administration Building, or Ms. Deborah Jarsocrak, Jacksonwald Elementary.
