Dear Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Thessaloniki, Greece, for the “State of the Art Surgical Symposium – The Last Supper” organized by the First Surgical Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Greek Chapter of the International College of Surgeons. During these two days we will hear about and discuss cutting edge topics in both General and Vascular surgery, as this meeting represents the combined efforts of both surgical specialties. This same spirit is representative of the clinical and research work conducted at the First Department of Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. This meeting will provide us with an opportunity to review the current state of General and Vascular Surgery in Greece, as well as identify future challenges and goals. In this effort we will have the valuable contribution of our esteemed international colleagues. Along these lines, I am extending a special welcome to the International College of Surgeons. This meeting will signify the beginning of what I believe will be an academically very productive relationship between Greek surgeons and the International College of Surgeons, as a way to exchange experience, knowledge, and most of all promote the education of the future generations of surgeons.

Once again, welcome to Thessaloniki and I hope that you have the opportunity to enjoy the rich history and beautiful sights of the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

Dimitrios KiskinisHead and Professor of SurgeryFirst Department of SurgeryAristotle University of Thessaloniki

LOCATION OF THE CONFERENCE

ThessalonikiThessaloniki is the second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre in Greece with a population of 1,200,000 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded in about 315 B.C., on a site of old prehistoric settle-ments going back to 2300 B.C., by Cassander, King of Macedonia, and was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander The Great. Since then, Thessaloniki has become the chief city of Macedonia and a major transportation hub for southeastern Europe.Thessaloniki retains several Ottoman and Roman structures as well as a large number of Byzantine architectural monuments. Among them the Rotonda of St. George, the churches of St. Demetrius, Panagia Acheiropoietus, Aghia Sophia and the well-known White Tower. In addition to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, there are numerous institu-tions that contribute to the academic and cultural life of the city. Among them are the University of Macedonia, the Archaeological and Byzantine Museums, the Folklore Museum, the State Conservatory, Theatres and Orchestras, the Society of Macedonian Studies, the Institute of Balkan Studies and other cultural and artistic institutions.
