Dear Church Family, In an issue of Today's Christian Woman, Ramona Cramer Tucker writes: “While at a restaurant after lunch, my friend Michelle and her coworker, Sharon, stopped in the restroom to fix their makeup before returning to their jobs. Their small talk turned to the subject of a woman who drove them crazy. Michelle launched into a two-minute diatribe about their coworker Beth. As Michelle prepared to divulge more, a stall door opened. Out walked Beth, red -faced and angry. Michelle and Beth stared at each other in embar- rassed panic. Michelle knew she couldn't take her words back. In the instant their eyes met, Beth fled out the door. That afternoon, Beth didn't return to work. The next day Michelle heard through the grapevine that Beth had resigned. While other staff members cheered what seemed to be good news, Michelle felt miserable. She wished she had talked to Beth instead of talking about Beth. Although that situation happened five years ago, Michelle's never forgotten it. She tried to reach Beth several times by phone, then wrote her a letter of apology. Beth never responded. Michelle says she learned her lesson about loose lips the hard way.” Proverbs 28:13 tells us that, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mer- cy.” I have come to find that sin is extremely easy to shrug off when no one else knows about it. It is easy to call sin a mistake or a “slip- up” when we are the only ones to be involved. However, Solomon says that in order to prosper we must not only confess our sin, but also renounce our sin. If you are like me it is hard, not to admit you were wrong, but to admit you are in the wrong. It is easy to admit you have sinned; it is hard to admit you are living in sin. Let us heed the words of Solomon and stop carrying the past sins and current sins that we are trying to hide. Instead, let us ask for forgiveness and turn from those sinful ways that are keeping us from being prosper- ous in the eyes of the Lord. I am not saying that it is going to be easy, but the Bible promises that it will be prosperous. COMMANDMENT # 11

During the 17th century, an archbishop traveling through Scotland met theologian Samuel Rutherford but kept his identity secret. Rutherford invited the man to stay with him. When Mrs. Rutherford gathered the servants on Saturday to prepare for worship the next day, the guest

joined in and was asked a basic question: “How many commandments are there?” When the guest replied “11”, Mrs. Rutherford said, “What a shame it is for you, a man with gray hairs, in a Christian country, not to know how many commandments there are!” The next morning, Rev. Rutherford went out in the woods to pray and heard his guest doing likewise. When he discovered the archbishop’s identity, Rutherford invited him to preach that morning. The archbishop’s topic? The 11th commandment, based on Jesus’ words in John 13:34— “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another” (ESV)

GOD’S LOVE

Could we with ink the ocean fill, were the whole sky of parchment made; were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade; to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretch’d from sky to sky. —Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai (adapted modern version)
