Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,May is upon us! This month will mark the Festival of Pentecost and the Season after Pentecost. The Church has traditionally celebrated the Festival of Pentecost as the fulfillment and conclusion of the Easter season. The name Pentecost, meaning “the fiftieth day,” originally referred to the Jewish Festival of Weeks, the time of thanksgiving for first-fruits and the gathering of the harvest (Ex. 34:22). The Christian Church kept the name to mark the completion of the 50-day period after Easter, and when the first believers were gathered into the Church.

On Pentecost, Christians commemorate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on to His people. We remember how God used an ordinary man, Peter, who was filled with the Holy Spirit, to confidently preach Jesus Christ crucified and risen from the dead. (Acts 2:14-41). We give thanks that the Spirit, working through the Word, brought a crowd of hearers to faith and repentance. Three thousand people, from all over the world, were baptized and received the gift of the Spirit on that day. Sent by God the Father, and by His Son, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit came to continue the Father’s work on earth.

And the Spirit continues to be active even today. That’s why our celebration of Pentecost is such a joyful one, and so vital for the Church to remember. Through the preaching of the Gospel and the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, the Holy Spirit calls and gathers believers, like you, to Christ and His Church. The Spirit works among people of every tribe and tongue, among all to whom the Church is sent to proclaim the Gospel. For this reason, we pray for the continued outpouring of the Holy Spirit and for the fulfillment of His sanctifying work.

We need the Holy Spirit and what He gives to us, because without Him, we are not able to know Jesus as our Savior. As Scripture tells us, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Cor. 2:14) The Holy Spirit calls us to faith through the Gospel and delivers to us God’s Means of Grace. This is what we celebrate on Pentecost and every day of the year!

In Christ’s Service and Yours,Pastor Krieg

Back To The Basics! A new Adult Information Class will begin on Monday, April 30, at 7:00 PM. It should be particularly interesting for both member and non-member school parents to familiarize you with what your kids are learning in class every day. The class will meet from 7:00 - 8:30 PM, on Monday evenings, and continue for twelve weeks. Babysitting and refreshments will be provided.

Join us on Mondays to go “BACK TO THE BASICS.” You will be glad you did.

To My Church Family:“Thank you” is sometimes hard and sometimes just not enough. For all the love and prayers you have sent my way during my recent illness and hospitalizations, a “thank you” seems inadequate. I want to throw my arms around all of you and hug you well! The cards, letters, flowers, good wishes, and especially the prayers, have meant more to me than you know, and I think they are the reason I came through it so well. I am feeling pretty good and looking forward to seeing everybody again soon.

When it comes to Pastor White, I know a “thank you” is woefully lacking. He has been my spiritual guidance for decades. He has been with me and my family during the illnesses and deaths of my son and my husband. He is the rock that has made Jesus Christ so much more powerful in my life, and that has sustained me in terrible times.

When I think of the difference between a pastor and a preacher, I think of Pastor White. A pastor is more than a preacher; a pastor is a shepherd who guides as well as feeds his flock. A pastor cares, tends, guides, feeds, and watches over. When members of his flock are hurting, there is no hour too early or too late, and no problem too small that he does not come to aid even one of his sheep. Ephesians 4:11 says, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers.” Pastor White is all those things, and I thank God every day for him and for all of you.

Even though it is not adequate: “Thank You” from the bottom of my heart.

Mildred Holeman

Lutheran World Relief Ingathering Report 2018Quilts and Kits are tangible reminders to people around the world that you care. In 2016, Lutheran World Relief delivered more than $13.3 million worth of Quilts and Kits for just $1.5 million in operating costs. A neighbor in need receives $9 worth of items for every $1 given to just the shipping fund.

We thank all of you who helped with donations, organization, packing, transportation, and shipping of all our quilts and kits that we sent to Lutheran World Relief. A very special thank you to Alex Payne and his sons for all their hard work in lifting, carrying, and loading. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Dear OSL Family,Debbie and I would like to thank you for your kindness and generosity towards the repairs of our house due to hurricane damage. Without your support, we wouldn’t have been able to make the necessary repairs. We are blessed to be part of such a caring group of God’s people.

Christ has risen… He has risen indeed! Alleluia!! We pray you had a blessed Easter Sunday. We worshiped with our small congregation in Nairobi and all the student pastors & evangelists from the Lutheran School of Theology (LST) joined us. What a beautiful day it was celebrating our resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, and what He did for us on the cross!

The LST remains a center of busy activity, as the school semester continues. Visiting pastors from Finland, the US, and Australia have been instructing the most recent classes and the focus has been kept on training pastors and evangelists in the Word of God. Jason continues to help with the logistics of every day life at the LST, along with helping coordinate travel for all the visitors and volunteers. At the beginning of April, the LST was the site of the week long Annual General Meeting for LIA & the Lutheran Heritage Foundation - Africa. Many board members were present from various African countries, along with Finland, the US, and Australia.

Construction at the LST continues… Jason has been working on finishing the floors, designing windows, installing doors, etc. at the library, Pastor May’s office and the cottage. We are excited that in the next couple of weeks, we will again have volunteers from Minnesota joining him to help with some of the interior finish work on the buildings.

As some of you already know, we will be moving back to Houston this summer. After lots of prayers, tears, discussion, and more prayers, we feel that it is time for us to go home. We will continue to support and help LIA anyway we can from Texas. Please keep our family in your prayers as we begin to say goodbye to Kenya, Jason’s work, the kids’ school & our friends here and as we transition back to life in the United States.

Thank you for all of your continued love, prayers, & support!! God’s Blessings to you… We love & miss y’all!! —- The Stephens Family
