ISSUE 83 Jan-Mar 2018 Dear All, I said goodbye as Chief in the last newsleer, but you will sll have to bear with me, as I am sll Chair for the next few months, waing for the University to appoint our new Chair. The process has been iniated and we should know in the coming months who will lead us. Please join me in extending congratulaons to Dr. Karen Gulenchyn, who just rered on December 31 st from her posion as Chief of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, aſter 15 years at the helm. Dr. Gulenchyn will keep working part me at HHS and SJH, and I am sure, will sll contribute to Nuclear Medicine and our enre Department. Dr. Gulenchyn was the first recipient of our Academic Radiologist of the Year Award for 2010, for the quality of her teaching to our residents during their nuclear medicine rotaon, and her remarkable contribuon to research. As well as her dedicaon to nuclear medicine and clinical imaging research, she has assumed various leadership roles at HHS, one of her last missions being structuring the new Department of Pediatric Radiology at MUMC. It has been a real pleasure to work with Dr. Gulenchyn all these years and I wish her a well deserved paral rerement. He also completed a Master of Public Health, Clinical Effecveness, at Harvard School of Public Health, in August 2015. Dr. Singnurkar currently serves as a member of the Ontario PET Steering Commiee. He has big shoes to fill and I wish him much success. Each year the RSNA R&E Foundaon recognizes outstanding trainees who have made significant contribuons to radiologic research through the Roentgen Resident/ Fellow Research Award. In 2017, the Foundaon presented the Roentgen award to 17 Canadian residents/fellows. Congratulaons to Patrick Kennedy, who is among the recipients of this presgious award. Dear All, I said goodbye as Chief in the last newsletter, but you will still have to bear with me, as I am still Chair for the next few months, waiting for the University to appoint our new Chair. The process has been initiated and we should know in the coming months who will lead us. This year's event is designed as a forum for all health professionals/educators to showcase their teaching

innovations and network with fellow colleagues in the ‘Spirit of Community & Scholarship’. This year's

theme is "The Next BIG Thing".

RADIOLOGY A C H I E V E M E N T S A N D N E W S

Marilyn Kereliuk is retiring as of May 30th, 2018 after 46 years of service. She received the 45 year recipient long service award. Marilyn has been on

staff since the opening of Diagnostic Imaging at the McMaster site and has been the senior of

general radiography for over thirty years.

A celebration tea will be held in Diagnostic Imaging at the MUMC site on May 11th at noon.

Please join us in celebrating this milestone in Marilyn’s life.

Joanne Tutolo is retiring after 35 years of service with DI at HHS.

She started at MUMC where she worked in all imaging modalities and in 1991 became senior for the CT area. While still working as a CT Technologist she became the

Radiology Technical System Specialist for many years where she was involved in maintaining the Radnet Radiology Information System, troubleshooting &

programming.

When Charge Technologist were introduced to Hamilton Health Sciences in 1997, Joanne was one of the successful candidates and has been a Charge Technologist for

21 years; 18 years at McMaster and the past 3 years at Juravinski Hospital.

In 2008, 2009 and 2011, Joanne received a Certificate of Appreciation from the President and CEO of HHS for her role as a preceptor and her commitment to continued

education.

Thank you Joanne for your many years of dedication and all the best!

HGH NEW CT SCANNER

HGH has anxiously been waiting for delivery of the new

Siemens Flash CT Scanner. The new system arrived Monday February 22nd and was ready for patients

Monday February 26th. The construction team has worked extended hours to shorten the time we had to wait for our

new system.

Staff training has begun with support from St. Catharine’s General Hospital. We look forward to the new technology this system will provide to enhance patient care here at the HGH.

Team Canada broke our own record with the most Olympic metals at a single Winter Games

for our Country.

Team Canada placed 3rd in the overall medal count, behind Germany placing 2nd with a total

of 31 metals, and Norway placing 1st with 39 metals.

Congratulations to all the athletes on an

incredible 2018 Winter Games!

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games (the XXIII Olympic Winter Games) was held in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, South Korea between

February 9th and 25th.

The games featured 102 events in 15 sports, making it the first Winter Olympics to surpass 100

medal events. Six new events were introduced including men’s and ladies’ big air snowboarding,

mixed doubles curling, men’s and ladies’ mass start skating, and mixed team alpine skiing.

92 nations participated with a total of 2,914

athletes.

Canada sent 225 athletes, including 122 men and 103 women, and 87 coaches to the 2018

Winter Olympics.

Figure Skating partners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir led Team Canada into the opening ceremony as Flag Bearers. Kim Boutin, short track speed skater, was Flag Bearer for the

closing ceremony.
