INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Dean’s MessageIt gives me great pleasure to welcome students, faculty and staff to the College of Business Fall 2014 semester at University of New Haven . I am excited to be serving the College at this time when the

University has just achieved national recognition in the form of a top ranking by The Princeton Review . This ranking is both a tribute and a challenge: a tribute to all the hard work over the years that has created a high quality institution; and a challenge to continue to be the best and exceed expectations once again!

Having just begun to learn about the incredible achieve-ments of this community, I am inspired by your talent, vision and energy . I hope to work closely with you all over the next year to spread the word about what wonderful opportunities are here for students to learn, explore and develop their talent . In this edition of “The Edge”, you will find stories from our distinguished faculty, students and alumni showing how we stand out from the crowd in delivering a professional education .

Mentoring Event Explored “Managing the 21st Century Healthcare” OrganizationFive members of the Connecticut chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) visited the University of New Haven in June for a panel discussion and mentoring event titled “Managing the 21st Century Healthcare Organization: People, Policies, and Priorities .” The event focused on the ways in which healthcare managers must be attuned to the rapidly changing healthcare environment and how current students looking to enter the healthcare field should prepare for the future .

The panel discussion, which was open to the public, was attended by more than 60 people . Healthcare executive members participating on the panel were Kevin A . Vest from the Yale School of Medicine, Adam Weinstein from New York Hospital Queens, David C . Wooster from Yale University and Stephen J . Carbery and Pam Scaglarini from the Yale New Haven Health System . Summer Johnson McGee, associate professor of public management at UNH and faculty adviser for the ACHE student chapter at UNH, was the moderator .

“This panel was a great opportunity for students to hear directly from practicing healthcare executives what is happening in healthcare today and how to best put themselves on a course to become the next generation of healthcare leaders,” said Dr . McGee .

Following the panel discussion, 15 graduate students from UNH’s Master of Science in Health-care Administration program participated in the one-on-one mentoring sessions with the ACHE healthcare executives .

“All of the participants provided insightful answers to the questions about the future of the healthcare industry,” said Akash Shetty ’15 M .S ., a candidate in the master’s degree program in Healthcare Administration and president of UNH’s Student Organization for Healthcare Administration .

“I am really glad that I came to this event, as we are able to mentor and inform these incoming healthcare professionals on what the industry holds,” said Wooster . “I wish this was available when I was starting my career .”

The event was co-sponsored by the University of New Haven College of Business, the Depart-ment of Public Management at the University of New Haven and the Student Organization for Healthcare Administration (SOHA), the student Connecticut ACHE chapter at UNH .

TOP STORIES

For the first time, the University of New Haven has been recognized by The Princeton Review in its annual college rankings . UNH is included in the publication’s “Best in the Northeast” list for 2015 .

The list, which includes colleges and universities in 11 states and Washington, D .C ., was developed by The Princeton Review from data it collected directly from several hundred colleges and universities in the region, as well as from staff visits to schools over the years and the opinions provided by college counselors and advisers . View UNH’s “Best in the Northeast” page .

“We developed our ‘Best Colleges: Region by Region’ lists to offer guidance for the growing number of students and parents now seeking colleges closer to home,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s senior vice president and publisher .

“We selected the University of New Haven -- and the other terrific institutions on our ‘regional best’ lists -- primarily for their excellent academic offerings .”

The rankings also incorporate feedback gathered from students as part of an 80-question survey developed by The Princeton Review that asks students about the quality of their professors and facilities and their experiences on campus .

“We ask every question that a prospective applicant might want to ask on

a campus visit,” said Franek . “Only schools that permit us to independently survey their students are eligible to be considered for our regional ‘best’ lists .”

In the UNH profile, students said their professors are “completely supportive and only want the best for their students .” Another response said that “all the students are amicable” and “smiles are seen around campus a lot .”

“I am especially grateful to read the overwhelmingly positive reviews shared by our students,” said President Steve Kaplan .

Collectively, between lists developed for the Northeast, Midwest, West and Southeast regions,

The Princeton Review rankings recognize the top 25 percent of the 2,500 four-year colleges in the United States .

Last month, UNH was – for the fourth year in a row – named a “College of Dis-tinction” by Colleges of Distinction, a national online higher education guide .

“These rankings advance our momentum, increase the visibility of the University and help position us as one of the finest comprehensive universities in the region,” said President Kaplan . “These accolades are made possible by the dedicated efforts of everyone in the campus community who each day exhibit an immense sense of pride in UNH .”

Management of Sports Industries Ranked Top 25 in the World by SportBusiness International

For the third consecutive year, the #1 source of insight and analysis in the business of sport has ranked the University of New Haven’s MS in Management of Sport Industries graduate program in the top 25 programs across the globe .

The UNH College of Business is dedicated to preparing our students for demanding professional positions . The Mentoring Event held on campus is just one example of how our faculty engage with practitioners to provide opportu-nities for students to learn from the real world .

Our second annual Summer Finance Academy run by Dr . Demissew Ejara provided high school students with some exposure to the world of business and finance . They also were introduced to the fundamentals of financial management .

Some exciting upcoming events include the “Women in Leadership” sym-posium on October 28; the Center for Family Business workshop series in October and December . See details below .

I am sure there are many additional newsworthy items going on at UNH College of Business . Please let us know so we can spread the word about the good things happening here . I look forward to meeting everyone on campus sometime this Fall .

STUDENT NEWS

The students of the MBA Finance program (Equity Market Valuation & Analysis) participate annually in investing a pool of funds, called the Charger Portfolio, in the stock market . The fund was established as a gift by UNH alumnus Ralph DellaCamera, Jr ., and students started investing in 2009 . Since then, the fund has outperformed the market every year, with the exception of the 2013 portfolio, which still gained about 18% .

The current value of the portfolio is over $62,000 . It gained approximately $4,000 since the newest investment proposal was implemented on July 10, 2014 . The current portfolio is invested in the following stocks: Apple, Inc .; Darden Restaurants; Honda Motor Co . (ADR); Coca-Cola Co .; Kohl’s Corp .; Lockheed Martin Corp .; McDonald’s Corp .; 3M Co .; Proctor & Gamble Co .; Sony Corp . (ADR); and Verizon Communications, Inc .

The students presented their findings to the Advisory Board Members, including Demissew Ejara (Director of the Samuel S . Bergami Jr . Learning Center for Finance & Technology), Finance faculty members and the Col-lege of Business Dean .

The University of New Haven hosted the 2nd Annual Summer Finance Academy on July 15-16, 2014 . This two-day workshop took place in the Samuel S . Bergami Jr . Learning Center for Finance and Technology and allowed area high school students (from West Haven, Milford, Hamden, Madison and Branford) to focus on the career opportunities that exist in business in general and in the area of finance in particular .

Students discussed the principles of economics and investments from various industries, such as government, financial markets and entrepreneurial busi-nesses . The students had a wonderful learning experience wherein they had the opportunity to perform a hands-on analysis of various financial applications such as mortgages, student loans, car loans, personal financial planning and obtaining and computing data through their mobile devices .

Director Demissew Ejara stated that the program will continue annually, as it is a great opportunity to introduce high school students to college and career opportunities in business . Thank you to all of the faculty members - Charlie Boynton, Gregory Blosick, Tony Carter, Frank Chen and Xinyu Lu - who volunteered their time and effort to teach financial literacy to the high school stu-dents . A raffle drawing was held for an iPad, and Mary Cate Deluca was the winner . Congratulations to her!

BROWN BAG SERIES EVENTS

The UNH College of Business hosted a Networking Event at the Bergami and Pompea Graduate Cen-ter in Orange, featuring keynote speaker Michael Davis, Vice President of Nestle . He is also a UNH alumnus and Executive MBA instructor and career coach . It was a well-attended event, including prospective students, alumni, faculty and staff .

Mr . Davis launched the evening’s discussion with a short and powerful YouTube video called “Dream,” which he used to emphasize the importance of overcoming fear while developing your personal brand, to help you be more effective when working with others . He reminded everyone that if you don’t brand yourself, someone else will . Mr . Davis also provided insight on how Nestle and other companies develop their corporate brands and the importance of credibility . He discussed how we can learn from companies that “repair” their

brands (e .g ., most recently GM) and how you can mimic such activities should your brand take a hit .

Mr . Davis concluded his talk by sharing his “3L” concept of Listen, Learn, and Lead and providing a simple pathway to building a personal brand in new environments:

. Know yourself and what you’re good at

. Create a memorable brand name

. Build a website

. Have social media presence

. Get feedback from people you trust

Michael Davis was invited back in September to speak on “Building Upon the 3L Concept & Branding .” He shared with us what a new hire should do in their first 100 days in a new position or department .

Girl Scouts Award CeremonyOn June 1, 2014 UNH hosted the Girl Scouts Gold Award Ceremony where 62 young women received the Gold Award . The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting . It is an award tied to national standards and acknowledges an individual’s accomplishments, leadership, commitment, creativity and personal effort in trying to make the world a better place . Each Gold Award project solves a community issue and improves lives, while the Gold Award process builds a girl’s personal leadership skills and inspires others to community action . Achieving Gold Award status in the Girl Scouts organization allows the recipient to understand themselves and their values, to care, inspire and lead teams on the local and international lev-els and to take action to make the world a better place by inspiring positive change . The Girl Scouts show-cased their presentations in UNH’s Campus Center, and a lovely reception followed the award ceremony .

Monique Bolt, UNH’s Admission Representative, was there to answer students’ and parents’ questions about the University and its admissions criteria . .

Who Needs a Board Anyway?A Panel Discussion by CFB Members

Why won’t people even consider a board? “We aren’t big enough to have a board .” “I don’t want to share our financial info with a bunch of outsiders .” “We are unique . No outsider is going to be able to come in here and tell me how to run my company .” “I don’t want to give up control of my operation .”

The majority of our Members could benefit from some form of board of directors or advisors . Most family businesses don’t have one, but you might find having one very valuable for your family and your business .

Paul Sessions will lead a discussion aided by CFB Members who have a board of directors or advisors . Among them will be: Lapine Inc ., Lyman Orchards, Bead Industries and Bishops Orchards . They will tell you:

. Why they decided to create a board

. How they selected their board members

. What they expect of their boards and

. The benefits for their companies and their families of having a board

Your peers will tell you first-hand how they manage and use their boards . This will be a very interactive session with a lot of information for you . Dialogue will be encouraged and there will be plenty of time for your questions .

We strongly urge you to invite other members of your family and your company to join you for this important discussion .

Harnessing the Power of Systems Thinking and Mapping to Transform Your CompanyPresented by Joe Laur

Your company is a system of moving parts . There are so many parts that it is sometimes hard to see the big picture . So how do you know if those are the right parts, moving in the right way? Through Systems Thinking & Mapping, you can:

. Gain the ability to see the interdependence of the parts

. Identify patterns that repeat over time

. Uncover beliefs that form resistance to change

Going through the Mapping Process will help you and your organization:

. Learn and make revisions and

. Discover the “leverage points” for taking action and achieving your highest goals

This presentation will include 2 cases from CFB member companies . Our pre-senter, Joe Laur, will help owner/managers map and understand the systems in their companies, and use that process to give them (and you) a greater grasp of the loops, patterns, and leverage points so they can take the necessary actions and achieve their desired results . You will learn to do the same .

Joe Laur is a founding partner of SEED Systems, an international consulting firm that works with individuals, teams and organizations through teaching and coaching to transform organizations and create a sustainable world . Joe has worked with Harley-Davidson, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Nike, Waste Management, and many more, focusing on organizational learning, personal effectiveness skills and sustainable development .

Most large and medium-size companies have a sophisticated information management system . To help our students understand these systems, UNH is a member of the SAP University Alliance, a global affiliation of universities with the German software company SAP . Member universities are able to access the various software applications provided by SAP, such as its Enter-prise Resource Planning (ERP) software, for educational purposes . Most large companies around the world, including Connecticut-based companies such as United Technologies, Pitney Bowes and GE, are using ERP software, and many of them are using SAP’s ERP software . Many of these companies, as well as government entities, such as the state of Pennsylvania, are seeking individuals with experience in using SAP software . There are thousands of good jobs avail-able for students who have SAP experience .

Within the College of Business at UNH, we are building a program to meet this need . Greg Blosick, the faculty coordinator for this program, has been teaching a course on business processes (FINC 4451) that utilizes SAP software to demonstrate how businesses are able to capture and integrate information in real time from orders to fulfillment or from production to fulfillment . We have

also had another business overview course taught by Bill O’Dea, an adjunct from Pitney Bowes with considerable SAP experience . We have added some SAP content to Mary Miller’s Accounting Information Systems course (ACCT 2250) and are looking to add SAP content to other business courses, as well as developing another new advanced business course with SAP content . Towards this end, Dr . Blosick took an SAP ERP configuration class at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee this past July . This and other classes with SAP content utilize a fictional company called “Global Bike” that was developed for educational purposes by University Alliance faculty members and is available to all member schools of the alliance . We will be offering FINC 4451 again next spring .

Providing our students with these valuable computer skills within a business context will help them with internships and, ultimately, jobs as they enter the workforce . Indeed, resumes that include SAP experience have been reported to go to the top of the pile of candidates for positions in companies needing these skill sets . It is also reported that these skill sets command above aver-age salaries .
